Harassing Phone Calls
Posted by on
Rating: 1/51
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA -- I have received numerous calls from 24 Hour Fitness gym for the past 2 weeks. I received 9 calls (5 within 2 days) just in the 1st week after missing my $20 monthly dues.

I have asked the collection company to remove my phone number from their call list and I expressed my frustration and the feeling of being harassed over $20. IT"S 20 dollars?! Are you kidding me?
They continued to call even after I had asked them not to call me. For the second time, I requested 24 Hour Fitness collections not to call me. They still are calling me at least once a day. So, now for the 3rd time, I have asked them not to call me. We will see if their harassment continues. This is ridiculous and poor business practice.

Based on 24 HOURS FITNESS's relentless harassment, I will be taking my business elsewhere.

I say give them the 20 dollars in cash (don't give them bank account or cards) and call it a day...pay what you used.

Trying to Be Charged for a Service I Did Not Receive.

Rating: 1/51
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA -- I signed up, total was going to be $80 and put a down payment of $40. They told me that the rest of the money would be due 2 weeks from the signing up date. I canceled after a week and before I canceled, I asked many times if the gym would make any charges to the account since it was not my card and they said no unless I decide to start the membership again (meaning I would have to go in, type my pin number, cell number and scan my index finger). Never did they told me about a 5 day refundable day cancellation or being charged the rest of the money after 2 weeks even if I decided to cancel. Now they keep calling me about the money and I do not wish to pay $40 of a service I did not receive. I restrained the gym form making any further transactions but will this get me in trouble later on? I hate 24 hr fitness they should have been clear with me in the first place. DO NOT RECOMMEND IT.

(By the way I never argued about getting my down payment back, my argument with them was about trying to be charged of a 40 dollar service I did not receive or told me they were going to make charges for. If they would have simply told me the week that I canceled my membership they had to forcefully make that payment, I would have stayed until the end of the month make my money worth it but they told me that no charges were going to be made and now they're trying to get the rest of the money 2 months after I canceled).

What did the contract you signed say about the length of time you had to cancel the agreement? It doesn't matter what the sales person told you - the only thing that matters is what the contract you signed says.

Horrible Treatment by Front Desk and Security Guard
Posted by on
Rating: 1/51
ESCONDIDO, CALIFORNIA -- I went to work out like I have for 10 years. There had been some mixup with the expiration date on the credit card used for the account. I was just there 3 days ago, - no problem. This rude kid at the front desk named JAVI made sure to make a big issue in front of everyone that I was late on payment, and proceed to demand that my daughter MUST appear in person to make it right. I called her and she confirmed that she had given all the updated info to the corporate office. JAVI - and the security guard were laughing their asses off when I got upset at being denied access.

I decided to leave and I have cancelled my membership. I called the manager, and she told me that JAVI and the security guard had accused me of Throwing A Towel at Them, which I told her was a bold-faced lie. She is planning on checking the security footage to see and I hope she gets rid of those little liars!! I simply set the towel on the desk to return it as I was not planning to work out.

Long story short, - I went to LA Fitness and WOW - what a difference. Those creeps at 24 hour did me a favor. I have a BETTER Gym at a CHEAPER price. I hope others follow my lead. It's on El Norte and Center City Parkway = LA Fitness -- no one deserves to be treated the way I was treated today by those two at 24 hour. I will make sure everyone I know hears how rude they are and never goes there.

The Pool Is Always Dirty and Kept Very Cold
Posted by on
Rating: 1/51
PORTLAND, OREGON -- I have been going to mall 24 Hour Fitness for over a year, I use the pool more than anything else in the facility. the pool is very dirty, at times one is unable to see the bottom of the pool it is so unkempt. a huge number of clients that use the pool and spa use the side of the facility to blow their nose and spit openly, some of the clients spit inside the pool. Trying to enjoy the steam room is another adventure as patrons will get water and then spit it into the sensors of the steam room to increase the steam. In the past year Multnomah county has been called a number of times and has forced the club to repair broken tiles (that were beginning to mold) along with replacing the spacers on the flooring that were broken if a person stepped just so one could really hurt an ankle or leg.

Just recently the club has decided it needed to save money so the temperature in the pool has been lowered.

I have talked numerous times to the club and corporate management and nothing has been changed. As soon as my membership is up yes I am finding another gym. Katu recently profiled most of the problems with this location and nothing has changed.

Weights

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA -- Hi from Member # BS 204 278

Club #814 needs 10 pound Iron Grip Weights. Order about quantity 20.

Thanks for your diligence in keeping the club 814 supersport in great shape. I work out early most mornings and use almost every thing in the gym at some point in time and it is all well maintained even with the high usage the gym sees.

I noticed that in the free weight area is can be hard to find a 10 pound Iron Grip weight (which is probably the one you need the most when trying to go up in measurable but small increments). If I do a rough count I notice about 20 or so 10 pound weights and over 100 of the 45 pound Iron Grip weights. You can always find the right weight but you need to scrounge around more and it impacts the efficiency of your work out time.

My recommendation would be to invest in another 2 dozen or so 10 pound Iron Grip weights next time you are up grading or ordering.

Thanks for listening. Call me if you want more detail. 650-400-7752. Ask any trainer there or customer and they will confirm.

Cancellation Nightmare

Rating: 3/51
PARKER, COLORADO -- Call to temporarily stop payments on my daughter's membership. I have been paying for my daughter's membership for several months now but because of her working hours and being a single mom, she has not had time to attend the gym.

My younger sister just passed away a few weeks ago and I had to go out of state for her funeral. I am on a fixed income and money became a huge issue this month. I called the club before the monthly payment was due and asked that my daughter's membership be stopped on a temporary basis. (six months) I explained my situation to Rob and that I would not have the funds available to cover the membership this month. He assured me that "no further payments would be taken out of your account..."

WRONG - I find out that this month's payment was indeed, taken out, causing me to overdraft. Will the club help? Sure, they will MAIL me a check, maybe in THIRTY DAYS. Mind you they will pay for ONLY THE MEMBERSHIP FEES AND NOT THE OVERDRAFT FEE CAUSED BY THEIR MISTAKE.

This caused an additional issue for me, I have high blood pressure, diabetes, gout/athirst, and a thyroid issue and I am out of my meds. Now, because of 24 Hour Fitness' mistake, I cannot afford to get my meds. If the fee had not been taken out I would have had just enough money for my prescriptions after insurance.

Side Note: Insurance pays for my membership --- I loved this club until now.

Failure to Properly Handle Injury Claim.
Posted by on
Rating: 1/51
SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA -- July 2011 Defective exercise machine caused damage to my right hand. After filling out accident report I never heard from 24 Hour Fitness management. It took me 3 months to finally get a phone number where someone would listen. Almost 2 years of back and forth, faxing documents. It was always to what I believed to be their insurance company but Insurance commission informed me that 24 hour is self insured.

I finally went to small claims court in November 2012 and won my case before a judge. Was it over? No sir. As usual never heard from them and finally with some persistence I was contacted by someone who said they needed a release but she would be gone for a week. 24 Hour Fitness has one policy "don't pay anyone even if they win". Their treatment of me is just one of thousands of the same type of cases. Their Risk Management is a joke.

If you have a judgment from small claims court, that they are being hesitant about satisfying, you may want to return to court and request a real esate or bank levy on the company. The court will issue the levy and you will need to pay a fee to the sheriff to serve the paperwork and collect on your debt. If it is a bank levy they will serve the bank and your judgment will be paid from any money currently in the company's account. If you serve a real estate levy on their property they will probably pay as quickly as they can gather the money.

The procedure is similar in most states and normally the court clerk can provide you basic guidance on the paperwork needed.

I am not in the legal profession, so any recommendations I make here are solely that of a layman.
JR in Orlando on 2013-01-30:
Contact an attorney for a consultation. Then an attorney in your state can explain what rights you have to enforce your judgment. If you are allowed to in your state, get the sheriff's office to go out and start seizing their exercise equipment. That will make them respond.

Also, you do not need to sign a release. This is not a settlement. You won and have a judgment. When they pay you, then they can file a satisfaction of judgment.

Also, report them to the credit bureaus. You have an unpaid judgment, which they will not pay. Certainly a reasonable basis to report them.

Inappropriate Customer Service

LARKSPUR, CALIFORNIA -- Today I was in the Larkspur, Ca 24 Hour Fitness Gym speaking with a female fitness counselor about doing a training when I was rudely interrupted by a short manager/personal trainer whom pulled the woman I was talking to away abruptly as if I wasn't there. I consider the act unprofessional, offensive inappropriate and uncalled for. The guy was probably the gal's jealous boyfriend and he was indeed a jerk. The young crew seems to gravitate towards younger people and discriminate against older people. BEWARE-You should go to a club where the management treats it's clients with more respect regardless of age.

It could be more than a jealous boyfriend. It could be that because she is a fitness counselor, she is NOT allowed to give training and they found out that she had previously and warned her about doing it in the future.

Did she tell about the fact that she couldn't train you? Did you press the issue about how you wanted an non-qualified trainer to train you? Because if the manager saw even a little of the conversation (especially if she has been warned about it,)she might have lost her job.
I hate when that happens! on 2012-05-24:

Does this say the girl was doing a training? For all we know she was giving advice on which trainer would be best suited for this customer.
rodney mckay ate a lemon on 2012-05-24:
"for all we know"

Considering that the OP also decided the manager was the employee's boyfriend, the "for all we know" game doesn't work well for this.

Perhaps he should have asked the manager why instead of just jumping into the conclusion pool of assumptions.
copper_works_ on 2012-05-24:
This is a legitimate complaint. Why is it being demeaned?
citrus allergy ack on 2012-05-24:
"Why is it being demeaned?"

Where do you see that? I only see people disagreeing with the OP and pointing out some holes in the story.

And disagreements are still allowed.
jktshff1 on 2012-05-24:
It's not. There is a difference between demeaning and needing more info or an explanation.
Anonymous on 2012-05-24:
jktshff1> I agree. The ensuing comments are simply trying to grasp the facts presented, and asking questions to fill-in any missing blanks. Nothing demeaning, degrading, or disparaging about it in my opinion.
Churro on 2012-05-24:
Good point cooper works. There's nothing in this *valid* complaint that needs explanation.
copper_works_ on 2012-05-24:
Yes it is. The poster never said the person he was talking to was the managers girlfriend. he said "The guy was probably the gal's jealous boyfriend". The whole point of his post is he didn't like being put off like that.

The poster and the counselor were talking about a training, isn't that their job? The manager handled it wrong. The poster is a customer and deserves to be treated that way.

Did I miss something where it says he was being trained by the counselor?

trmn8r on 2012-05-24:
It is a complaint. I don't see it is being "demeaned". It is "legitimate" opinion of the poster. I see questioning as to further details so that others can understand what happened and formulate an opinion.

Perhaps the OP has evidence that older people are being discriminated against as suggested. I hope that they stop back and specify it if they do.
The person who was pulled away could have been for several reasons. Maybe a bomb theat was called in, etc etc. Without further details it isn't possible to know.

CowboyFan on 2012-05-25:
Nothing demeaning in any of the comments, because it is an attempt to figure out the motivation of the fitness people, so that the OP and we can learn more. Sounds to me like the woman the op was talking to was not supposed to be giving training advice, per company policy, and that the manager jerked her away rudely for that reason.

As to the treatment of older people, one of the things I hate as I get older is that I become invisible to young people. If I and a good looking young guy walk up, the young girl clerk is not going to wait on me first - shhh. A fact of life.
Churro on 2012-05-25:
There is absolutely no excuse for the way the OP was treated therefore no more needs to be said by the OP.

If the OP did provide more info it would be picked apart by the chronic 'the customer is always wrong' element on this site.

Honestly, I don't know why anybody would ever post a complaint on this site.
jktshff1 on 2012-05-25:
There is not a "customer is always wrong" element here. There is an element that likes additional information before coming to an ignorant conclusion.
trmn8r on 2012-05-25:
I understand why people post complaints on each of the consumer feedback websites. You just look around, and you can figure it out.
that makes no sense on 2012-05-26:
that makes no sense. according to you we're not allowed to talk about the OP thinking the girl was the manager's boyfriend. but the op is allowed to suggest that the manager was her boyfriend.

O_o
okaaaaaay.

ticia232 on 2012-05-29:
How was I demeaning? Because I pointed out other reasons that the manager might have taken the employee away? I actually shorten my list because I thought that personal reasons for the manager taking her away, would cause people to say don't bring your problems into work.

But, since I have already demeaned this person, I once was pulled away by the manager to inform me to my mother had called. She let me take the call because my grandfather had died. The manager allowed me to leave for the day.

What if it had been something like that Copper and Churro? My manager did get a complaint about it, about how she took me away abruptly, but I guess that she should have gotten all she wanted from her WAGE SLAVE, and not allow me to be a human.

Thieves! Thieves! Tramps and Thieves!

HOLLYWOOD, NEAR ARCLIGHT, CALIFORNIA -- My first visit at 24 Hours Fitness and I was ripped off! Someone broke my lock and took the money that was in my wallet. I am almost certain it's one of your employees. I usually go back to my locker from time to time during my workouts and when I went to my locker previously I noticed that the lock had been tampered with. It looked like someone was trying to snap it off but I figured the employee didn't have time to do it for some reason, so I went back to my work out thinking it would go no further.

I doubt it is a gym guest since they don't stake out lockers or have time to break in to rummage through belongings as employees would. Furthermore, if a guest was to loiter in the locker room it would be easily detected. An employee can easily meander in the locker room and be virtually unnoticed. It is unfortunate that 24 Hour Fitness hires locker room attendants that are dishonest and thieves. Previously I've gone to Bally's for over 15 years, now its L. A. Fitness, and never once have I had a problem with locker room theft.

I have read reviews on the Internet about this kind of locker room theft at 24 Hour Fitness clubs but I thought they were just a few isolated incidents. Now I'm convinced that the locker room attendants in the Male's locker rooms make a living breaking into lockers and taking only the cash, leaving behind cell phones, credit cards, wallets. If it was a guest they would more than likely take everything without regard to the person's angst from being robbed. I rated this company 1 star because the website didn't give me the option of -5 stars.

I hope you notified the police and had a report made. It probably wouldn't help in your case but if everybody who gets ripped off there reports it they might do a full investigation.
employees ? on 2012-04-01:
you're just assuming an employee did it.

you have no proof of that other than your own decision that they *must* have taken it.... while forgetting that other people in the gym also go to the lockers.

Abby on 2012-04-01:
You saw it had been tampered with and "assumed" it would go no further because someone didn't have enough time to get in it? What makes you think they wouldn't come back a second time, to get the needed remaining time to get in your locker as obviously they did if you are missing cash from your wallet? If I saw it had been tampered with, once is all it would have taken with me. I would have been removing my belongings immediately and notifying the management of the tampering, before it became theft and I would not trust them a second time with the chance to actually get into my belongings. My valuables do not get left in a gym locker in the first place however, so no problem there with theft.

Automate Withdraw After Account Canceled

ARNOLD, MISSOURI -- Recently checking my bank statement and I know theses that I have 2 different withdraw from my accounts. My girlfriend is under my account, the only charge with draw should only be her account because I paid a lifetime membership of 40 dollars per years. Sat down n talk to them n they have no clue where that came from. They told me that they give it to the gym manager to investigate n contact me later. The next day they called me back n said they found out that I have another member that was active, and that amount came from it. That member was my girlfriend sister, we sign her up and she only work out there for a few week, then she decided not to go anymore so I ended up cancelling her account. It been over 2 years since I cancel the account n now they told me it was still active. I told them that impossible n doesn't make any sense. Why [snip] would I paid 34.98 a month for a person that doesn't go there. I told them that I came in n talk to one of the enrollment employee to cancel my account. They told me they don't have any record of my cancellation. Then they told me that they can cancel it now n give me a 2 month refund. I said well that y 24hr fitness being sue a lot. I am so piss off. I would [snip] cancel my account if I don't have the lifetime membership. Now am gone to look at my bank statements monthly. If it happening again I'm going to cussing the [snip] out of them.

Because cussing them out will fix the problem? Did they give you written confirmation of the account's cancellation? If not, it's their word against yours.
tnchuck100 on 2012-02-13:
First, NEVER give ANY company direct access to your checking account.

Second, if I read this correctly you have paid over 2 years on a cancelled contract? And did not notice the missing money until now?

It is typical with most companies to only refund 2 or 3 months of billing errors when discovered. Small claims court might extend that time but if you have no written proof of the cancellation that will probably not be successful.
Cwazychicken on 2012-02-13:
If I were you I would cancel whatever account you have left, change banks and never ever give a fitness center your bank information again! These places like to sucker people into joining, then make it hard to cancel.
Skye on 2012-02-13:
Great advice chuck.
CowboyFan on 2012-02-14:
The other thing to do in these situations is to send a confirming letter to the place, certified, return receipt. "This is to confirm I came in on _____ and spoke with bobby joe, your employee, and told him I was cancelling my contract for sisterlou. I hereby cancel the membership for sisterlou. Do not withdraw any more money from my bank account to pay for this membership, I withdraw any authorization previously given by me to do so.

If you need any additional information or paperwork, please contact me. Otherwise, I will presume the membership is cancelled and no further withdrawals will be made from my account for this membership." cordially, xxx

That is really good advice, CowboyFan.
