America's Funniest Home Videos Going Trashy
Posted by Cottondog on 01/18/2009
ABC has gone so seedy that it can't even seem to put on a supposedly wholesome family show without edgy, off-color or subtlety sexual humor. I have been a fan of America's Funniest Home video's for years because of it's wholesome good clean fun. This last season is a tremendous disappointment. 30 clips of "ball"-crushing accidents is one thing, but showing men, women and children in their underwear, bras and a bathing suits popping off, and children innocently doing sexually suggestive stunts is beyond the pale of family programming. For heaven's sake, the host of the show can't even talk to a toddler sucking on his mike without making crude remarks. This show needs to decide if it's for adults or children--it can't be both at once. If for adults, then it should be moved to the adult programming hour, not at 7:00.

If for children, show some restraint, for heaven's sake. You guys have so many edgy shows on, allow us a show or two of good wholesome fun, without the trash please!

I don't know jkt. I too am against the off color, subtly sexual, edgy stuff in today's world. :)

hopefully your using the time to explain each sexual inuendo to your child. Its a wonder opportunity and I'm sure the only reason you complain its for the cheeeeeeeeeeldren.

I have to admit, I've gotten tired of the "Ball Crushing moments" too. They are so predictable.
Posted by D. Aliff on 2009-01-18:
I can remember being little and watching grown men getting their balls crushed, doesn't seem like anything new to me.
Posted by Soaring Consumer on 2009-01-18:
I remember the older seasons and I loved it, I miss the old AFV. The newer one is all about pain, accidents, and stupidity and that is why I stopped watching it.

I think we should all get together and send a petition to ABC.

Posted by sabletaz on 2009-01-19:
Stop watching.....
Posted by Sparticus on 2009-01-19:
This is nothing new. Have you ever watched the Shrek movie(s)? Packed with adult humor. Kids don't get it... so it makes it enjoyable for both young and old.

Most the time it is pretty harmless since kids have no clue what the joke is about...
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-01-19:
The thing about AFV is exactly as soaring consumer said--it's just not funny anymore. People getting hurt is never funny to me and it seems that's all they have on the show now. It probably won't be long before it goes off the air anyway. I don't think kids should be taught that hurting people is funny anyway. Yes, they can change the channel or stop watching--but, I think they were trying to make a valid point.

I won't use the word prude anymore.
Dan, it is a good way to educate the kids.

Why does that 'comment removed' notice stay up on some threads and disappears on others?

Yeah jkt, I believe Carlin had that one on his list. lol!
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-01-19:
Why is the OP a prude? I am confused (again).
Posted by Principissa on 2009-01-19:
Maybe I'm weird, but I've never liked that show. I just don't see the humor in some guy getting kicked in the jewels or watching granny slip on ice and land with her dress over her head. I guess I just don't see an old lady breaking her hip as funny.

I think the point the poster is trying to make (and this is just my opinion) is that the show is not funny anymore and that the off color humor and same boring clips is getting old and tired.

Amen, Princi. See my comment above--no, the one above that. Great minds think alike, lol.

ABC used to be the "edgy" network until FOX came along... If you want to watch dreck, watch FOX...
The same is true of their news division... pure dreck....!
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-01-19:
Best answer, Princi. Such incidents are funny when staged, but I can take find no humor in seeing someone injured and embarrased. The show appeals to some very base instincts.
Posted by jktshff1 on 2009-01-19:
I did not say the op was a prude, I said I would not use that word anymore.
Princi..best answer.
Why can't a show be for adults and children?
I usually try to stay away from complaints about tv shows and celebrities. You can turn it off, switch channels on the first and who cares about the other.

Thanks for your comments and support. Some were helpful, some not. The off-handed response of "just turn the channel" is also a tired one, when every time you turn the channel you get more of the same or worse. I feel that's an excuse to avoid taking responsibility. Using edge as an opportunity to teach your child shows some ignorance as to the psychological make-up of children. As a teacher, I see that young children are pretty black and white about what's "good" and "bad". Since they are taught (rightly) that people getting hurt is not funny, and that we don't show our underwear (!) they tend to get upset and embarrassed when they see things they know they are not supposed to--. They get conflicting messages about stuff.

But my main point is, again, why does the trashy stuff have to seep into every family program, as if the writers can't restrain themselves? Again, can we not have a couple of completely innocent, G-rated, no-worry programs without being told that our views don't matter, just turn the channel? AFC has proven that in the past that it is possible to be funny without trash, so why not do it? If you want trash, it's easy to find all over the place.
Posted by madconsumer on 2009-01-29:
"The off-handed response of "just turn the channel" is also a tired one, when every time you turn the channel you get more of the same or worse."

then your next step is to stop watching the telley all together.
Posted by cottondog on 2009-01-30:
To mad consumer--Actually,I pretty much stopped watching the "telly" years ago--I don't own cable and AFV and a few other programs are all I watch (although I own some very high quality DVDs!). So you can understand my disappointment at having yet another program turn sour. The sad thing is, it's not necessary. As I said AFV has proven in times past that it can make a wonderful family program that both adults and children can enjoy and laugh together with no worries. I feel we are all robbed.
Posted by JonathanPaulX on 2011-10-15:
Just watched AFV tonight on ABC and I was completely disgusted. A catholic priest is conducting confession with an elderly woman when he suddenly strips and starts gyrating in nothing but a codpiece. What if it were a rabbi, or an Iman instead? This one video should be enough by itself to outrage all devout catholics and motivate them to a full scale boycott of ABC. What do you think?
Posted by Thad on 2013-01-01:
AFV is one of the worst concepts ever conceived in the television industry. I agree the show was tamer back in the Saget era, but painfully lame in character. The current host, Tom Bergeron (spelling?) is a boorish man. I never liked him. He appears as someone who's terribly conceited, sly and insecure at the same time. AFV severely became the crude village when Bergeron took over the hosting duties. Why AFV has lasted as long as it has really makes me question society. I'm not going to pick a part the viewers who actually enjoy AFV, but I just can't fathom the desire to waste an hour watching amateur media of people engaging in ruthless, mindless stunts or the plethora of crude material along with all of the staged videos people submit. So be sure to tune into AFV next week to see 5 year old Billy eat Jello through his nose, and watch as his 2 year old brother tinkles inside their daddy's guitar.

exploitation of children in the semi nude. Sexual situations. I'm not hear to complain. I want it stopped! Tom Bergeron is a perv and acts like a pedifile.

I am protesting your new adoption reality show!
Posted by Mjholly on 04/28/2004
I am outraged and furious that you and 20/20 are planning to do an adoption reality show in which 4 pairs of adoptive parents fight for a baby. That will cause adults to think that they can treat children, especially infants, like furniture and garbage. What will that poor infant be thinking? Will that show encourage adults that it is OK to abuse children and get rid of them like garbage? I AM VERY UPSET!!!

Five couples comepte to adopt a baby. Barbara Walters said, on 20/20, that it will come down to "a nerve-racking elimination round." I find this very very distasteful.

In case you didn't know, this is a FREE COUNTRY. There are no restrictions against television producers airing this program, just as there are no restrictions that force you to watch it. Turn off your TV and spend your time doing something else, like organizing your sock drawer.

i agree with all of you (excluding the retarded one, of course)! But paul makes the best, and most sarcastic, point...it IS a FREE COUNTRY where we reside. we have a CHOICE! So if this sick show makes its way to the tv, let abc know about how sick it makes us! This is our CHOICE as outraged Americans that wish to see less garbage on tv! this is just my 3 cents, though!
Posted by Slimjim on 2004-04-28:
Paul and Madcow make legit points, and no, I'll will not be watching it. If the show is as in poor taste as expected, the losers will be 20/20. Their rep will take a hit and we'll see the "worth it" factor in the ratings.
Posted by cableguy on 2004-04-29:
I will grant that it is disgusting but if you don't like it, don't watch it.
Posted by bill on 2004-04-30:
Turns out this isn't a reality show. It was jsut really bad marketing by ABC. The promos and commercials made it look like a reality, competition show but it is just a 20/20 episode about 5 couples going through the adoption process. Shame on ABC for promoting it the way they did.

Inappropriate commercials at 6:00 P.M. viewing time
Posted by Ldb96 on 12/03/2011
My grand kids, 13 and 5, where with us last night so we were watching the Cat in the Hat, The Grinch, etc. on the ABC family chan. when a commercial came on advertising up-coming shows etc. when it began to so women in scantilly clad attire and provocative poses that lasted way to long. I couldn't believe this was on at 6:15 P.M. and on a family TV channel.

I was very upset and concerned about this and ABC should be ashamed.

Posted by GenuineNerd on 2011-12-03:
What product was being advertised by these "scantily clad women"? I know that during dinnertime, many stations do run distasteful commercials, such as for hemorrhoid cream, toenail fungus treatment, jock itch spray, tampons, maxi pads, even the cute Charmin commercial in which the little bear has "dingleberries" (little bits of toilet paper) left on his butt. A friend of mine got upset over the "toenail fungus" commercial, because he was eating while the ad ran. I guess it's both the shock value and the money that causes advertisers to run such commercials during the dinner hour. I find it shocking, to say the least, if I'm sitting down to dinner, and a commercial announcer says "For itching and burning, doctors recommend Preparation H".
Posted by Skye on 2011-12-03:
Well GN, you just about covered everything!

I believe the op is complaining about the Victoria's Secret commercial.
Posted by trp2hevn on 2011-12-03:
I hear PBS is a good channel to watch.
Posted by Anonymous on 2011-12-03:
Cat in the Hat starring Mike Myers on ABC family channel? Is the OP not alarmed at the part of the movie where Mr. Myers unfolds a picture of a woman sideways (an obvious innuendo of a centerfold) and his sagging top hat then straightens up (a 2nd innuendo of a male's genitals).

The Grinch That Stole Christmas? Please say it wasn't Jim Carrey's version. The one that also involves innuendos and a reference to a "key party"...aka...wife-swapping.

Great programming choices on the part of ABC!
Bottom line...I think the commercials are the least of the OP's worries.
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-12-03:
Justice, I don't think the OP was watching those versions.

Nerd, I agree. The distasteful commercials at dinnertime are more bothersome than scantily clad women. I see the OP's point though. Why show those type commercials during children's programming? It seems like a waste of money.
Posted by Anonymous on 2011-12-03:
Venice> I believe it was those versions. And if that wasn't bad enough, the programming on before was "That 70's Show"...the sitcom where marijuana references happen about every other scene. Again...quality programming for a "so-called" family channel.

If there is one thing I can assure you, it is that ABC and the rest of the networks are not and will not ever be ashamed of anything they do as long as it's legal and might make money.
Posted by lexophiliac on 2011-12-03:
So you're saying as far as the networks are concerned there is no shame in their game Alain?

Posted by Alain on 2011-12-03:
That's my feeling about them. The only shame they feel is when the ratings drop. Maybe too cynical, or maybe realistic. **offers a poker hand to J4A & Lex**
Posted by Alain on 2011-12-03:
That came my way a little ways back. Not sure why, but it's okay. I'm not really trying for anything, but I enjoy it here. Anyway, everyone else is equal when it comes to stuff here.
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-12-03:
Justice, if you're right about what they were watching, then I agree. I didn't see either of those movie because they're too creepy. I doubt they're appropriate for 5-year olds for a variety of reasons.

Some of us actually parent our children and are very picky of what we allow in our households.

This is what the OP was watching. "A whimsical cartoon about an audacious cat who visits two bored children and turns their house into a shambles while searching for his family "credenza." Dr Seuss wrote the lyrics for the songs. Voices: Allan Sherman (cat), Dawes Butler (fish),...

The Grinch was also the cartoon, after the cartoons came the adult versions. I'm sure many of us exercised our off button at that time.
Posted by Cwazychicken on 2011-12-04:
I dont know if we have different abc family channels but the movie versions, not the cartoons, were on last night. I did not watch them but i skimmed my dvr showings at around 6 and 8 and saw them on last night.

ABC family shows all kinds of shows, some not so suitable for younger viewers but aimed more for teens. Like pretty little liars (about a "murder" mystery." All i can say is thats what you can expect from cable. Only channels really good for children are pbs, and nick jr. Maybe abc needs a abc JR for just kids.

Amana Washer

After Four years the bottom of the washer is starting to [rust] and they told me there was nothing they could do. The washer cost $373.00 and the repair men said it would cost me $250.00 to fix it. The bad part of this that when I bought the washer I got a 5 year warranty, they told me the warranty did not cover this . HA! HA! how about that!

Cabinet rust rarely is covered by any warranty outside of maybe the full one year. If it is cabinet rust, you could touch that up yourself with some rust paint. Won't look great but will be better than the rust spots. Your unit should have a lot of life left in it otherwise.

On Demand Advertising
Posted by Joebadodoughuts35 on 12/30/2011
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- I hate that when I watch an on demand television program that I can't fast forward. Think about it, if I had interest in the advertisement, I'd watch it, but no, I am forced to watch 45 Muppet Movie commercials. I wouldn't go see that movie if my attendance cured cancer. I've begun to just not watch shows that can't be fast forwarded. ABC/Disney are the absolute worst in that regard. Nearly every on demand show prevents fast forward. Madison Avenue must be severely retarded to recommend this tact to ABC. Personally, I put advertisers that implement this kind of mean-spirited advertising on my "do not support list", i.e. The Muppet Movie. I won't watch the movie in the theater, on cable, DVD, computer, and not I won't let my kids or grandkids ever watch it. I hope ABC/Disney pulls their marketing head out of a specific sphincter muscle.

Posted by lexophiliac on 2011-12-30:
You can use Page Up to skip ahead 5 minutes, which bypasses the commercials, then rewind back if it's too much. You can use PageDn to skip back 5 minutes. Once the networks figure this out they will probably find a way to put the kibosh on that workaround too.

Bad Tree Removal Business

Owner Jerry admits to not completing job and advises that balance of money will be refunded, but it's been 5 weeks, and no refund. Calls and emails to him have gone unanswered. Yes, I should not have paid them in full, but the owner Jerry seemed to be an honest guy, so lesson learned and buyer beware! This will go to litigation, but that's my problem.

No More Reality Shows
Posted by Naseemwaheed98 on 09/25/2011
It is very disturbing that ABC Television does not care what their viewers want rather they are only in for the money, how disgusting. Our economy is tanking and they only care about themselves. No respect for their followers of All My Children for 41 years. I am so disappointed. It was so nice to turn on the television and see familiar faces, and some sense of normalcy in this very harsh economic time. I will not watch the CHEW, nothing against the people in it, but come on, have some respect for your long time viewers.

Soap operas are going the way of game shows on daytime TV as well. Used to be, there were at least 10-12 game shows on daytime TV...now the only ones left are Family Feud and The Price Is Right. I know that Wheel Of Fortune and Jeopardy are on in the evenings, and primetime TV have had their share of game shows as well, but I'm talking daytime. Eventually, all you'll see on daytime TV are endless "court" and "judge" shows, talk shows with lower-class, unrefined people in shouting/shoving/fighting matches, and any talk show host that's desperately trying to be the next Oprah (a tough act to follow.) If you have nothing better to do than watch TV during the day, maybe it's time to abandon the networks and turn to cable.

I don't watch any of those shows on ABC. I think Dancing With the Stars is the dumbest show ever. Never got into the Bachelor or the Bachlorette. The only thing I do like on ABC is What Would You Do

Little - exactly. In my opinion the reality shows cater to the lowest common denominator.

The only current running tv show my bf and I actually care about is TBBT cos it at least is interesting. But even then we still do the DVDs :)

Well OK, I do like house but I haven't watched it this past season - I got busy.

From your complaint, it sounds like the show is what I would expect from a reality show where people hook up. That's why I don't watch it.

I miss "Lost", "Medium", "Monk", "Nip/Tuck" and "ER". Those were my favorite shows. "House" had a decent season but it's starting to wear thin. There are a few shows coming in the Fall that sound interesting, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Nip/Tuck one of my all time favorites.

Thank MTV's 'Real World' for starting this reality craze.....

"Lost" was definitely the best show on ABC. I used to watch "House" but it's not the same show it used to be
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-06-07:
Skye, "Nip/Tuck" was a one of a kind show. I was hooked from the first time I watched it. I'm not surprised that you liked it, too.

"Lost" was the best show EVER! There's a new J.J. Abrams' show coming in the Fall called "Person of Interest" with Michael Emerson. There will never be another "Lost", but seeing Michael Emerson again will be fun.

I don't think "House" is going to do well next season. Cuddy is leaving, and Wilson's appearances will be limited because he is also be doing a Broadway show.

"Cops" was the first reality show

Nah uh... WWF wrestling was the first reality show.
Posted by Anonymous on 2011-06-07:
LOL good one MRM.....I must agree
Posted by Anonymous on 2011-06-07:
Is WWF really "reality"?
Posted by Anonymous on 2011-06-07:
Yes....Wrestling is very real...lol

If you ever saw the documentary narrated by Steve Allen on pro wrestling, you will discover positively that pro wrestling is not real, never has been, never will be. As he asks at the nend of the program, "Would you really want it real?" The ring is sprung and miced to make stomps sound a lot bigger than actual, the wrestlers are entertainers who performalmost 300 days a year. If what you see were not choreographed stunts, the 'wrestlers' would be in hospitals six months of the year. They know they really can't hurt one another, since this is how they make their living, and if they were really as hateful, they might really get 'accidentally' hurt. I can't tell you the number of times in Indianapolis, I would see wrestlers at restaurants having a good old time, just after it looked like they were trying to kill each other in the ring. No pro wrestling is not real, and the WWE is not the only game in the wrestling business. It is entertainment, pure and simple. The stars are actors, and they are athletes who perform fantastic stunts, but they are not really competing, it is all determined ahead of time.

"Would you really want it real?"

Star - the answer must be "Yes"
Otherwise the UFC would never exist.

Well thanks for clearing that up Starlord....
Posted by Starlord on 2011-06-07:
Elf, you are absolutely correct. I was only quoting Steve Allen. I think, however, the active career of a pro wrestler is much longer than a MMA fighter, precisely because they do not take the beatings they appear to. The human body can only take so much punishment. Also, you will never see an MMA fighter blatantly miss a cue and obviously take a punch that is no closer than a foot, LOL.
Posted by PepperElf on 2011-06-07:
O yeah. I agree... that's why Hulk Hogan is still performing when he's what... 900?

I doubt UFC fighters have careers lasting anywhere as long... simply because they take real damage and not fake-damage.

Rose Parade Coverage
Posted by Hammigon on 01/01/2011
I attempted to view the Rose Parade on ABC this morning. I listened to banter, laughter, with a look at a float passing down the street. Camera view showed a group or float behind the featured float, then the camera switched to the announcers, who were chattering about each other. Behind them a band was Marching along. No "Oh yes, back to the parade!" "Ah.... there is a float and lets talk to the people from Days Of Our Life" and the starring actress says "Here's what is going to happen in 2011". Who cares! I want to see the Rose Parade. All of it. I want to know what equestrian group is in the parade. I want to know what is going on in the street behind the blabbing announcers. Advertisements should only be scrolled at the bottom of the screen. I won't buy UNO, I won't buy a Discover card, I won't buy Geico, I don't and won't eat at McDonalds. What happened to the GOOD OLD DAYS. Are you improving? No way. Shirley
