Vulgar cards on display
Posted by on
I would like to voice a complaint against the American Greetings Card Co. and Walmart. Walmart is letting AG put cards in their stores that are vulgar, use profanity and disgrace God. This is a disgrace and I am very offended to go into my local Walmart and see these cards on display. Children can look at and read these vulgar words and pictures.

I suggest something be done or I will do everything I can to talk American Greetings Cards down.

More info please? What do you mean by vulgar?
old fart on 2011-06-24:
Are they too vulgar to put on this site?

Just asking....
Skye on 2011-06-24:
Details would help us to understand what cards you saw, and how were they vulgar and offensive?

Thanks~

American Greetings makes a BUNCH of cards. Without specifics, I don't see how corrective action can be taken.

The children can't read them if their parents don't let them.

I'm guessing if it's not too "vulgar" to put on display, the it's not too "vulgar" for this site. Vulgar is a subjective term. Some may take offense that religious cards are on display. Or the candles. The image of Christ on the cross is pretty graphic.

If we always worry about someone being offended, everyone's freedom is diminished.

Excellent response, Chuh. This subject is a tough one b/c what offends one may not offend another. You simply cannot cover everyone...so, if something is offensive to me, I deal with it in my way, I don't expect others to cater to my beliefs and morals.
Also for the record, it isn't just Walmart that is carrying these cards...the OP would pretty much have to boycott every store that sells AG cards.

what one person considers vulgar, is not vulgar to another.

what does the poster consider vulgar?

I know a lot of people who work at American Greetings, but honestly I've always liked Hallmark cards better.
If you want your complaint heard you can write to the following:

What was vulgar 10 years ago is normal today on tv. So its hard to point out what exactly is wrong with the cards by just saying vulgar...Things have changed. Some stores do have "graphic" novelty cards (like half naked men and crude jokes) but I have yet to see one that swears badly or has full on nudity....as for the disgracing god ones, I don't know much about that....I choose just to buy normal birthday cards or make my own.
Venice09 on 2011-06-24:
A simple solution would be for family stores to display novelty cards at the top of the display where small children cannot see or reach them. Anyone tall enough to reach the top should be old enough to see the cards.
DebtorBasher on 2011-06-24:
That's true Venice, but we must think about all the LadyYaYas of the world! They are adult but wouldn't be able to reach the 'good ones'.
Venice09 on 2011-06-24:
Haha.. Well, LadyYaYa will just have to ask the closest good looking guy for a boost!

Yaya, I can imagine being 3 feet tall is an issue for you.

American Greetings E-Card Service is Horrible
Posted by on
I signed up on a trial a few years ago and keep getting billed. I called to cancel my membership and found that it is impossible to speak to a live operator. The recorded voice sends you to their website. The website is not set up to make it easy to find out how to cancel. I sent an email and I thought I had canceled, but low and behold, the charge appeared on my credit card. I went online to cancel again and received an email telling me my subscription is canceled for 2010, but I need to pay for 2009. Ridiculous. I have not used the service in two years and can't get a hold of anyone to help me.

I WILL NEVER BUY AN AMERICAN GREETINGS CARD AGAIN. What a shameful way to run a business.

You can't cancel through the web site. Only way to cancel is to call 1-800-711-4474, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. EST and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST on Saturday. If you are unsuccessful try American Greetings Consumer Products Group 800.777.4891. There are numerous complaints online about American Greetings making it next to impossible to cancel.

NEVER, EVER ever subscribe or even choose a trial membership with this company! They make it virtually impossible to cancel your membership, they have an automated phone system that will not let you speak to a live person, and even if you think that you have canceled your membership, you will find out that you were never canceled and have continued to be billed monthly. This company does everything it can to make it impossible to cancel your membership and make life difficult for its customers. This is the most dishonest company that I have ever dealt with. I canceled my membership in December 2010 and I'm still being billed in April of 2011. I did once successfully get a customer service representative on the telephone but was told that I never canceled my membership (I had)and they would not refund for the months that I was automatically billed. They did agree to reverse charges for the month of April and issued a refund for that month to my bank. Next day they charged me again! Their customer service representatives (if you ever speak with one) read off of a script giving you the same scripted answers over and over again, they never actually give you any answers, and than if you continue to ask questions they get very RUDE! I now have a case against them with my states Attorney General and with the Better Business Bureau. If you google "consumer complaints against American Greetings" you will find MANY, many reports against this company. Go to Pissed Off Consumer, the Rip Off Report, Pissed Consumers, and the Better Business Bureau and you will find the many complaints against American Greetings. Do NOT begin a trial subscription or a paid subscription with this company. You will NEVER be allowed to cancel your membership! A complete and total SCAM.

I am having the same experience. Referred to the web site by the telephone number on my credit card. Website said no further action necessary.. I have never purchased even one card from them, but they keep billing me 3.99 per month.
