MILLSBORO, DELAWARE -- Canceled my account for propane after 16 years with a subsidiary of AmeriGas. I was told they (Paradee Gas) would pick up the tank but I would be charged $168. This is for picking up THEIR tank. When the tank was picked up the employee couldn't even find the required serial number to list the tank. This is gouging at its best.

CALHOUN, GEORGIA -- I changed propane providers--from AmeriGas--in November 2013. I call the main office at least 10 times for someone to come and remove that tank from my property. No results yet as of may 27 2014. Would have easier to have sold that tank to me. AmeriGas would not sell it, as of today. Have fun getting it out of the tree.

PINEHURST, TEXAS -- AmeriGas is the worst I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. I called to have my tank refilled on November 11th, 2013 and was told they would be out sometime that week to fill it up. On Thursday the 15th, we called again to make sure they hadn't forgotten (which has happened numerous times before). We were told they would be out on Friday the 16th. Well, no one came to fill our tank. I called again on Monday the 18th and was told that they had no record of us calling on the first time on 11th, but they did have a record of us calling on the 15th. Again, this is not the first time this has happened. They said the would be out sometime on the week of the 15th.

By Wednesday the 20th, we were out of propane, so I called Texas Star Propane and a mere 5 hours later, they had removed the AmeriGas tank, put in their tank, filled it with propane, and lit my pilot light. Texas Star Propane accomplished ALL that in 5 hours -- compare that with AmeriGas which after a week and a half and 3 calls, they still hadn't filled my tank.

But that isn't the end. On November 20th, we called AmeriGas to come pick up their tank, and were told it would be 4-5 weeks before they could come pick it up. All they would tell us is that it is peak season and all of their drivers are busy. It is now January 14th, 4 weeks after we told them to pick up their tank. I just got off the phone with them and now they are saying they won't be able to pick up their tank until sometime in February.

I spoke with the manager of the Pinehurst location, and I asked her for a corporate customer service number. She said the number was nothing more than a complaint hotline, and the complaint would be routed back to her. Basically, I'm getting nowhere with these people. Our homeowners association is complaining about the tank, and if we are fined, I told AmeriGas the bill would be going to them. Do not do business with these people, they are a joke. I highly recommend Texas Star Propane -- they are courteous, prompt, less expensive than AmeriGas, and they know how to run a business.

CLIFTON PARK, NEW YORK -- Call #1: In preparing to move out of my rental at the end of August, I contacted AmeriGas to close my account and get a refund of my security deposit and unused propane. I was advised that the landlord would have to call and either purchase the propane himself or authorize them to lock the tanks. He called them around September 1st to authorize them to lock the tanks.

Call #2: On September 9th I called to check on the status of my refund and learned that they still hadn't locked the tanks. I was told they would issue a work order to lock the tanks, and that my refund would be processed shortly afterward. I said I had already moved to my new house and left a forwarding address; I was assured the refund check would be sent to the new address.

Call #3: September 18th -- still no check. I called and learned that yes, the tanks had been locked, and that my $1000 refund had been processed -- USING MY OLD ADDRESS. I pointed out that I had left a forwarding address in my previous phone call and that it was beyond belief that I was on my third phone call to them and that this matter still wasn't resolved. Customer service representative ** said she would check with accounting; perhaps it still hadn't been mailed out and she could get it sent to the correct address, because their refund checks DO NOT get forwarded by the post office! She said she would call me back on Thursday, September 19th at the latest.

Call #4: It is now 1:00 pm on September 19th and no one has called me, so I decided to call. I was told that ** is at lunch but they assured me she would return my call. Yes, I'm sure she will.

I find that AmeriGas is *extremely* prompt and efficient in sending you a bill or getting your security deposit. That efficiency ends the moment it's time to close your account and issue a refund. FOUR PHONE CALLS and still no information on my refund. Ridiculous. Avoid this company at all costs. Bottom line: Spare yourself the headache and split your own wood before you deal with this company.

Propane Tank Rental Rip Off!
By -

DOVER, PENNSYLVANIA -- Well the endless strings of consumer complaints about this company AmeriGas says it all! The home I purchased 12 years ago already had a buried 500 gallon AmeriGas propane tank so I assumed the contract with AmeriGas from the prior homeowner. Not thinking at the time it would ever be such an unreasonable company to deal with year after year. The original contract was for automatic fills and soon after my first couple of years at the residence I discovered I was not hardly using any propane at all (single person does not need 500 gallons a year). This was realized when I was invoiced for $600 of propane that was never even delivered.

When I questioned them about this charge for propane never delivered, I was advised that they will charge a minimum usage fee each year if no propane was purchased. They then offered to put me on the tank rental program for $100 per year, which I was glad to agree. Each year since then (2008) the rental fee has increased a little and last year (2011) the fee was $121 which I was still OK with. Just got my new invoice for 2012 rental fee $233.20 ABSOLUTELY ridiculous increase. I suppose this increase is because I still needed no propane this past year therefore made no purchases.

It is a crime that I am doing all I can to conserve energy as the rest of the world is trying to do but yet penalized by this company AmeriGas because I don't consume what THEY think I should. If the tank was not buried I would have done away with AmeriGas a long time ago. Tried contacting AmeriGas by phone to discuss this increase but never could get through. Two attempts at 1 hour hold time each, finally my patience expired, became frustrated and hung up. I suppose too many other unhappy AmeriGas customers beat me to it.

Price Gouging Because of Hard Winter
By -

ELDON, MISSOURI -- I had my 500 gal propane tank filled Oct 7, '09 by AmeriGas, 285 gallons for $1.50.9 @ gal ($438.66 w/tax). It ran down and I had to get 390 gallons delivered today, Jan 8, '10. The driver didn't know the cost so I called AmeriGas and (did not catch her name) was told it is $3.30 @ gal before taxes! I owe them $1330.11! I asked how it could be over twice as much and was told the driver made a mistake and had charged me commercial rate in October.

I called Goodrich Gas and they said they charge $2.15 @ gal over 200 gallons. I called the Attorney Gen's office and was told that if AmeriGas owns the tank, it can't be regulated. I called AmeriGas back and talked to ** to see if there was a mistake and she assured me there wasn't. I asked her how much it would cost if I owned the tank and AmeriGas didn't and she said that it wouldn't matter, it would cost the same. I am single, I am unemployed, and this has knocked the wind out of me! I have always had at least 30% of propane left in the spring and I know that it has been cold, but to have such outrageous prices in such a hard time is too much of a shame.

I was given the option to come in and get put on a 6 month payment plan, but I will send in the full amount and find a different supplier next time. I am sure AmeriGas will charge an outrageous fee to pick up the tank as they do when you have to pay for a gas leak check that most suppliers don't charge for. I don't know if I signed a contract with AmeriGas, but I think I had to sign something when Scott's sold out so AmeriGas could charge me $60 or $65 for lease of the tank. I can't stand to think of the hardship for people with children in the home. There are other companies people. Get AmeriGas out of your life.

Not Again!

MIDWEST KY,OH,IN -- Here we go again. Every year that I need to fill my tanks, AmeriGas customer service tries to play me like a fool. First of all I pay for my propane before it is even delivered. I tell AmeriGas that I have 32 percent in one tank and 35 in another. They tell me first of all that I owe them $90.00 balance, like I said that I pay before I can use. I asked "how do I owe money too you?" I guess she thought that I would just go ahead and pay it. I questioned her and she said "someone in the office must have made a mistake." I checked the price for propane online before I called AmeriGas, the price per gallon is $1.89.

After she figured out that I was not paying the $90.00, she told me that my price per gallon would be $2.39 a gallon. I guess she thinks that I am stupid or something. $.50 more cents a gallon is what they are going to charge me?? The last two time that I got my two-hundred gallon filled, that I paid for upfront and was supposed to put me @ 80%, one tank was 72% and the other was 73%. I paid to have them filled to 80%??? They rip people off all the time. This was not the first time that they had done this too me. And when I asked why was my tanks being filled at 60 degrees temp when it was 26 degrees outside, every answers that they give me, not one matches.

If I would you I would save my money and call around to find a better price and a better company. Stop letting companies like this rip you off! I am sick of AmeriGas taking my hard earned money and I am not getting what I pay for. Fuel Recovery Fee $4.03. Hazardous Materials $9.56. Very bad customer service.

AmeriGas Intimidation Tactics
By -

CLINTON, NEW JERSEY -- AmeriGas is a bad company. They own the tank, they force you to buy their gas, they refuse to sell you the tank. They fill the tank also when you ordered only a partial fill (which you do due to your financial limitations), saying this is their policy, and then they charge you dear money for pumping it back out. They lie to you, claiming a partial fill is hazardous, but when you call other Propane suppliers they all say no problem. When you have a problem and want to talk to a manager you only get put to voicemail and never hear back from them.

Now it is May, and they want us to pay $3.20/Gallon while you get it for less than $2 from others, although we already used more than the annual minimum usage (half a tank), i.e. there is no obligation on our end to stick to winter prices. They claim there are contracts in place, but there are not (they tell you to read their terms and conditions online).

Another time they literally said this on the phone: "if you don't like it we'll rip the tank out and whatever we damage on your property is your problem" - what an illegal statement that is. All in all, intimidation tactics, bad attitude. They treat you like they own you, like a money slave. Their business license should be revoked.

The best way to handle it is to part with them. Talked to other suppliers who sell you a tank. They offer a completely seamless transition by removing the evil AmeriGas underground tank and putting in a beautiful new tank that you own. All done in 3-4 hours and you are liberated from hostage and you can be again yourself. AmeriGas deserves to be punished with bankruptcy through a mass exodus of customers.

Automatic Renewal of Contract Without Authorization
By -

LEWISTON, MAINE -- I have had several contracts for propane with Amerigas in Lewiston, Maine but now they have done it. Every year I would go to their office and sign a new contract for automatic delivery with monthly affordable payments. This year they renewed the contract without my knowledge but here is the thing. The monthly payments are almost double. I understand prices are up but the payments are also based on last year's consumption.

So when I received an invoice for the first month's installment I called them to ask what it was all about. I asked to speak with the manager to talk about the payments as they were too high for our budget. I was not allowed to speak with the manager just Chris the CSR. I was told that no matter what if any changes were to be made, I would be charged $150.00 for an early termination fee. I asked how I could be charged an early termination fee when I never agreed to a renewed contract.

Chris the CSR kept referring to the original contract that I signed last year so I pulled it out. I don't think that he was accepting me to have it still. I read line 9 which states both parties must agree to the price per gallon. I never received any notice of what my new per gallon price was for this month. Chris the CSR then stated that I received a letter about my per gallon price along with the notice of the $112.00 fee that is on all contracts. I pulled out this letter as well and read it to him and nowhere on the letter did it state my price per gallon. He stated his copy had the price (basically calling me a liar).

After quite a lengthy argument, which was going nowhere I decided to hang up and seek advice from someone. I called the Attorney General's Office – Kathy Peters Phone: 207-626-8800. After speaking with her, she stated that we have a case as we cannot be forced into a contact. I am filing a formal complaint with the State of Maine. I advise anyone having problems with Amerigas to call the attorney's office in their state. Keep all your documents and write down any conversations you have with anyone at Amerigas along with their name and date.
