Predatory Practices on Rate Changes

Rating: 1/51
PEARLAND, TEXAS -- We had a one year contract and at the end of the year we switched our electricity to another company and we always paid on line and tried to pay our last bill on line but the on line account was shut down. We never received a bill and several months later we received calls from a collection company that we owed a huge amount for our bill and late fees and collection fees. I immediately called Amigo to get them to send us a bill since we could no longer pay on line and that promised they would send but we never received. I finally got a hold of someone at amigo and she said that the late fees and collection was out of their hands and I finally got them to email me a bill and looked at it and for the 2 week overlap we were charged a huge increase and of course late fees and collection fees.

If I know I owe money for an account and have not received a bill you be darn sure I will contact them.

You knew for several months that you owed for the electricity. Yet you did not contact them during all that time. Once an account is closed they stop sending emails, but they could have sent a bill via snail mail. Why they did not is an unknown. Still the onus is on you for not being proactive and contacting them for many months.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- Okay so I saw that someone else had the same damn problem as we did.. I got merged over to Amigo in June of 2008 and never got a bill until today and bam $467 and a rate of over 24 cents when I was also told they couldn't add more than 10%. What a bunch of a-holes.. Then I called to ask why my bill was so much and why did it take so long to get it and they tell me to contact my post office. Not only did I get one bill I got two one from July and the other for Aug.. Then they have the nerve to tell me they emailed me and sent bills..

I'm calling BBB tomorrow morning...

I agree with you! Amigo energy sucks! I had the same deal as you did. Thank god I switch to another provider before they send the "first" billed to us. Still, unbelievable how their rates are just a joke! .2419 KWH is a joke!

Electricity Rate Increases 226% With Out Notice
Posted by on
HOUSTON, TEXAS -- We engaged a 6 month contract with:

Amigo Energy
777 S Post Oak Blvd
Suite 700
Houston TX 77056

In the next billing cycle following the 6 month term, without notice our rate was raised from .107 kwh to .2419 kwh.

Our bill was raised from $292 to $664 due to the delay it takes to change providers our bill next month will increase from about $300 to $750.

I asked for documentation that their costs had increased similarly and nothing was available in writing.

This is pure bait and switch and predatory billing.

If you've been victimized too, contact the Texas State Attorney General, the Better Business Bureau and the Public Utility Commission of Texas. We have done so and await their arbitration.

Yikes! Sure it was not over use? We have a baseline with SCE in the summer, if we go over it each kwh of power keeps going up. It's a penalty system for people that abuse power by running air conditioning 24/7 and stuff.

Welcome to the world of deregulated electricity. Deregulation gives consumers options and lower prices... or at least that's how I heard it pitch 7 or 8 years ago.

Deregulation -- how can we lose?
JLuebke on 01/28/2009:
No penalty for "over-usage" here. Just pure bait and switch and the Public Utility Commission will not do anything to assist. There is no oversite or assistance whatsoever from the State of Texas.

Shortly after screwing us their office was damaged by the Hurricane. I only hope that the hurricane found the owners and managers homes as well.

It was a 6-mo. promo rate. By law, they're required to notify you near the end of the promo rate. If they didn't, then they were wrong. If they did, you should have paid attention. And it does not take more than a few days to switch to a new provider.
An alert consumer simply pushes a few keys and changes providers whenever the initial promo rate expires. It's called taking care of business.

Amigo Energy = scum

Amigo Energy= scum! talked my 80 year old mom into a contract several years ago at. 16 cents per kilowatt hour. I did not know of this, but at the time this was about 6 cents higher that anyone else.. AND STILL IS LESS ANYWHERE!!!

They took advantage of an old lady. As soon as that contract was over I switched her to another company.

Amigo Energy Ripoff

DALLAS -- This company has raised my electric rate in a predatory manner. My rate was increased by 136.53% in only a few months time, without notice and without warning! My payments were never late (Automatically deducted) and my service or credit did not change during this time. I have requested an explanation from Amigo on several occasions using both telephone and email, however, they never responded.

Apparently, this is common practice as there are many identical complaints on public web sites about Amigo Energy.

I believe Amigo Energy has committed a breach of contract and I am the victim of fraud and abusive billing practices.

STAY Away from this company at all costs. Also, if you se Mr Javier Antonio Vega in the Houston area or elswhere, say "Hi" to the POS Amigo CEO, or kudos if you run him over.

I agree Amigo is a ripoff. Avoid this unscrupulous company. They will raise your rates by double or triple with no warning. I am suing them in small claims court in Plano. They are not legitimate.

Amigo Energy Sucks and Worst Customer Service
Posted by on
AUSTIN, TEXAS -- As many of us that had the misfortune of being transfer from NPC to Amigo; we just got screw big time. Not only they were late in sending statement but also increase the rate to .2419 from .129 (NPC Rate). They charging me of 9 days of service a fee for not exceeding the 500 kwh usage. Let me bend over and just @#$$ me. There customer service needs an overhaul. It is a joke. You wait for ever and "if you want to leave a message"; it just put you on hold again.

Please, please don't use Amigo Energy! Go somewhere else!

They sent my bills to the address that I had transferred from. I did not get a bill till it was forwarded through the mail and by then it was the same day that they were going to disconnect service. I called the worst customer service in the industry to explain they were sending my bills to the wrong address. They informed me that the they could not do anything to reverse the disconnect. They told me I had to go to a check cashing place to pay the amount owned. I guess that would have worked out but the place to pay my bill did not open till 10am and my electric was disconnected at 9am!!! It took them 28hrs. to reconnect electric that I had paid for the day before.
I have had this company providing electric since May, it is now Oct. and the only bills I am receiving are disconnect notices. I called to see if I could change the due date by 3 days due to pay schedule and surprise surprise they can not do anything.
This company will not work with you at all. This electric company has got to have the worst and the most unprofessional personnel I have ever dealt with!!!!!

Hello everyone,

I have complained to the PUCT and the BBB regarding Amigo Energy. I have also contacted Amigo in regards to my problem, which are the same as a lot of yours (late billing, price gouging, problems with customer service, etc.). I am getting in touch with a Class Action attorney to see if we have a case any further. Please contact me at if you would like to be included in this class action.

Regards and good luck!

Breach of Contract
Posted by on
HOUSTON, TEXAS -- We were forcibly changed to Amigo Energy from NPC as NPC pulled out of Houston residential electrical service. The contract we have states they cannot raise the rate by more than 10% per month. Amigo would not send a bill or give a rate - when we finally cancelled/transferred we got a double month bill - a rate increase from 0.125 to 0.2469 per kwh. 3 days to pay or an additional late fee of $32.
This seems extremely bad practice and I have filed complaints with PUC and BBB.

Please watch out for this issue - it appears that I am not the only one Amigo Energy is ripping off.

Update: PUCT found in our favor and basically ordered Amigo to honor the NPC contract within 21 days and update the over charged rate from 24.9c to 16.5c per kwh. I recommend that all file a complaint with PUCT.

Amigo Energy Has Hidden Costs

If you decide to use this company, please read your contract carefully. Note your billing cycle. I have found their billing to be sporadic at best.

I will be paying the $150 to go back to TXU it was so bad.
