Ignored for a Half Hour
Posted by Ftsmith87 on 09/12/2013
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA -- My friend and I went to Applebee's on a Thursday evening around 8:00. The restaurant was pretty much dead, there was one group that had just left as we got there. The hostess sat us near the door and we waited for someone to come over to take our drink order. We saw a server walk by and go clean off the table of the group that just left. While she was doing that another server walked right by us. We sat there for five minutes and no one even acknowledged us. The server finished cleaning off the table and walked by us again without saying a word. Ten minutes has now gone by and we're still sitting there. There are only two other couples eating in the entire restaurant, so we know the servers are not swamped or anything, then I could understand the wait. The wait is now fifteen minutes and there are no servers in sight.

Finally I see a couple of them just wandering around across the restaurant, both of them even look over at us but no one bothers to come over. Our menus are open and we have no drinks and we keep looking around. Twenty minutes has now gone by and we are STILL waiting. We look at our phones and decide that ten more minutes and we're walking out. Servers are still up and walking around, but on the other side of the restaurant still. Finally a full half hour has gone by and not one person has said or word to or even acknowledged us. We finally just get up and walk out and go to another restaurant nearby. We called the store immediately and asked for a manager.

The manager got on the phone and gave the most generic and forced apology I've ever heard in my life. He said that one of the servers said that she saw someone walking out (of course they see us then) and we could come back and he would take care of us personally, but we tell him that we've decided to go somewhere else. Normally we really like coming to this restaurant, but this left a bad taste in both of our mouths. I don't even think of going to Applebee's anymore when I go out to eat somewhere.

I would understand if they were swamped with customers or something, but the place was dead! I am a very patient and understanding customer (I work with the public also, so I try to be as patient and polite as I can when I go somewhere else) but there was no excuse for this whatsoever.

i think you did the right thing. i can understand ten min. but not half an hour
Posted by Buddy01 on 2013-09-13:
You did the right thing walking out. Maybe your situation is why it was dead.
Posted by FoDaddy19 on 2013-09-13:
In most restraunts the servers have designated tables that they serve. If you're in one of those tables, they generally won't address you as it's not their responsibility to serve tables that aren't in their section. It sounds like the server who was assinged to your section either wasn't there or is very, very lazy. You did the right think by leaving, a 30 minute wait when the place is dead is unacceptable.

Late Service, Wrong Everything
Posted by Talat_48 on 07/21/2013
BRANSON, MISSOURI -- I went to this location in Branson MO which I go there ones in a while and sit at the bar since there was a long wait.. I don't really believe it was my fault that they were short handed in the restaurant.. it took 15 minutes for a person to hi to me and maybe 25 minutes for me and my who joined me later to order something to drink..

Finally we got to order some food after asking if we can order the 3rd time to our bartender (which is the reason that we went there to eat not to drink) finally we ordered and my soup had bacon on it which I don't suppose eat bacon at all in my life so is my wife.. I asked the bartender if she could get me one with no bacon...

After all it was over 1 hour later I received a soup which my meal is still on the way I think:) and I tasted the bacon ??? Why did I send that other one if I could be ok with the bacon in my soup? Or couldn't I just mix my soup myself so I can't even see the bacon in my soup? Then I received my food hmmm how do I know what they did to it since I can't get what I want from them 2 times already?

Oh yeah I did eat half of that soup which discussed me and now I m home trying to fix myself to eat after I tried to eat 2 hrs ago from this restaurant... Bad service careless kitchen then ' ll never go back to Branson Applebees again :(

They Try Too Hard for a Good Tip.
Posted by Pmarsh69 on 07/04/2013
The food is good, prices are decent. But what I don't like is how hard they try for a good tip. From the moment you walk in they are almost down your throat the whole time with being overly nice, kissing butt way too much. They just need to relax and be considerate. I would be more likely to give a tip if they would be relaxed and give good service.

Other than being a bit annoying by interrupting you too much, what else was bad about the service?

Are all the servers like this? I would think this might vary greatly from one to the next, and you just drew a short straw.

If this happened to me, I would mention it to the manager, so they could take the server aside later and give them guidance.

Would you rather they be rude and uncaring?

this person may be a new employee. and considering people complain when they do not get this kind of service
Posted by BigAl on 2013-07-05:
This has happened to me a couple of times so I know what the OP is complaining about. Please feel free to use the same method I did. After a few unwanted intrusions asking me various things I simply stated that everything was just fine and that if I needed any further help I would get their attention. Worked every time.

Waitress Actions in Delivering Our Lunch
Posted by Redirishvkkt on 05/23/2013
MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK -- My friend and I went for lunch 5/22/13/first our coffee and water was carried out in the waitress's hands with the water glasses held to her body and both cup's of coffee held in one hand dripping over the side of the cups and flatware. When the lunch arrived my soup was not hot and did not taste right, when the waitress finally came back to ask if everything was okay I told her about the soup her reply was I thought there was something not right with it, in my opinion then she should not have served it.

I had to ask if I could have a small salad instead., at this time we were asked if we would like a refill of coffee, we were finished our lunch at this time. I work in the restaurant and catering business. Trays should always be used when delivering any item to the customer and never should touch any part of the waitress's body.

Spicy Mistake
Posted by Ronniekhoward on 03/22/2013
There were two of us that ordered shrimp. One dish was to be extra spicy one bland due to a health condition. The cook screwed up and put the spice on the wrong shrimp Dish. I got the spice so I told my waitress who ignored my complaint.

We used to way their once a month. Ruined my daughters birthday and made me quite ill.

did you report it to the manager?
Posted by trmn8r on 2013-03-22:
I resolved my issues with food preparation and quality at Applebees by booting their derrieres over the side and not looking back. I had some very poor meals at than chain.
Posted by JAKFK on 2013-03-22:
I have always held the contention that EVERYBODY will make mistakes in life. What separates a good business from a poor one, is how they react to that mistake. Given the chance, if management does nothing, then I would spend my money elsewhere. But I always like to afford them the courtesy of trying to fix the problem first. And it sounds as though you had two problems...A) The incorrect order, and B) the rude server. Hope you have better results next time. Good review!

Don't Get The Riblets!
Posted by Lindajnichols1 on 01/06/2013
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK -- My friend and I were wanting to grab a quick meal. Applebees was near by so we stopped there and wanted to investigate their 2 for $20 deal. We both ordered the Riblet Platter. For an added $2 you get more 'ribs'. I have to admit that this was the worst meal I have ever eaten. I did spend several years cooking at a 4 star restaurant so my taste buds are a bit above average, but I took into account this was a chain restaurant.

The platter came out and the 'ribs' were swimming in sauce, which I had to scrape off to find the 'rib'. The first bite into the rib resulted in having something thin, sharp, and bone like, slicing the roof of my mouth and sticking between my teeth.

Investigating what I had bitten into, I discovered there wasn't a RIB in the ribs. Rather, there were a series of small thin bone plates running horizontally across the thing that had been cut to look like a rib. What I had bitten into is the section of back bone that runs from the last rib down to the hip. These are trimmings that are normally thrown away, or sold to processing plants for animal feed. Not sold for human consumption.

We got french fries as a side and could not eat those either. They had so much salt on them I think the kitchen spilled the box of salt on them and rather than using them to take ice off the road, just served them as non-consumable food.

Complaining to the management did no good and neither did contacting the main office.

The dessert was rather pleasant, a chocolate brownie and molten chocolate cake.

With beverages, the bill came to $40. So much for the 2 for $20 deal, or ever eating at Applebees again.

The best I can say is the waitress was apologetic and pleasant.

I haven't been to Applebee's recently and this sort of thing certainly discourages me from stopping in anytime soon. Maybe a quick comment via http://www.applebees.com/about-us/contact-us would let their corporate office know they have a problem at this franchise location.

Thanks for explaining why the riblets are so bad. I got them several years ago, and they were so gristly, I didn't eat them. I guess they can get past the false representation by calling them "riblets" and not ribs. Great review.
Posted by trmn8r on 2013-01-06:
Applebees is the worst of the mid-priced chains, in my opinion. Once I was given a glimpse by management of certain supply/preparation techniques (during discussions about my complaints), I realized they are rank amateurs from management and distribution down to the kitchen. One example that comes to mind is an item Applebees corporate referred to as "garlic bread" that it shipped to all locations - this was the equivalent of what you find in a frozen meal to be microwaved.

IMO you would be well advised to leave the neighborhood bar and grill behind and ship off to other ports of call.

I used to go to Applbees often back in the day but the past few years the food and service has decline while the prices have increased not a good combination.

And I agree with TRM, the Garlic bread they serve reminds of the same Garlic bread Marie calendar puts in their spaghetti dinners not all that appetizing.

When I originally joined my3cents over four years ago my very first review was about Applebee's. Since then nothing has changed about this bottom feeder chain joint. The food is still horrible, service is bad and management (?) is totally lacking. They employ mostly kids that are inexperienced looking for a big tip. I have given them more chances than they deserve and refuse to return.

I made the grave mistake several years ago to supplement my M-F regular job with a PT weekend job at Applebees. Management was HORRIBLE, my co-workers were indeed mostly kids, but I have to say, they did provide good service overall, despite being obnoxious and immature when not in front of the patrons.

I thought the food was OK, the hamburger meat was angus and always fresh, never frozen. Everything else though was indeed shipped in frozen or pre-made. It is like that at most restaurants though. The kitchen was always spotless and cleaned thoroughly. The worst aspect of the job were the customers. But I digress. Regarding the riblets/ribs, I always tried to discourage customers from ordering them because even management freely admitted they were crap and wish they could drop them from the menu or get better quality from a different supplier. EVERY single time I had a customer order the ribs or riblets, they were returned to the kitchen. EVERY SINGLE TIME! Applebees is NOT the place to go and order ribs/riblets. And yes, I agree the fries are too salty.

Regarding the OP's comment about so much for the 2 for $20 (and ended up with a $40 bill instead), that should not have been surprising. You paid $2 each for extra riblets, the desserts you ordered are about $7 apiece and then there are drinks factored in, tax and tip.

37004 VAN DYKE STERLING HEIGHTS, MI 48312, MICHIGAN -- 7 U.S. Hungry Active Duty Army Recruiters waited 25 minutes for a table! We resorted to the bar where it took her 13 minutes to take our drinks! After getting our drinks another 10 to order our food!!!! I ordered the 7 oz sirloin meal well done and its still moving and moo'ing! We never heard from her for another 30 minutes!!!! When our food came out by a group of people she wiggled her fingers at us for her peers to figure out!!! Just plain unprofessional! I really do have patience but she gave me the urge to punch her in the face!!! I would also like to mention I NEVER had the craving to waste my time on leaving a review!

IMO, Applebees is the bottom of the chain restaurant barrel!!! I lost my patience with the poor food and lousy service, which seemed to be the norm!!! To avoid aggravation I no longer go there!
Posted by ok4now on 2012-12-15:
Here we go again with another scathing Applebee's review. It seems that they are in competition with the Olive Garden for the best bottom feeder chain joint. Eat at your own peril!!
Posted by Dakota1015 on 2012-12-15:
After our last trip to Applebee's, my wife and I decided that was our last trip there. One person seats you, another takes your drink order, that same person may or may not take your food order, and someone else brings your food, but nobody takes responsibility for getting the order right. Things are not so good in the neighborhood. We are done.

Lost my appetite
Posted by Pb54 on 08/27/2012
GENESEO, NEW YORK -- Ate at a local Applebee's and we were seated in a booth near the kitchen. I worked in a restaurant when I was younger and know there can be noise with trying to get business done, so the door opening and shutting I could ignore. What I couldn't ignore was listening to a manager yell at people seated a couple booths down. My wife and I just stopped eating at this point, the guy was all red in the face and hollering and seemed to not notice his behavior. The wait staff surrounding the area looked horrified and then when he got out of sight they tried to fluff it off and say he does that from time to time. I knew they were trying to be polite for our sakes, but we could see the looks on their faces to know they were shaken. We asked to take our food home. It just made for a bad dining experience.

I also lost my appetite after eating at AB's for awhile - I finally realized I was eating slop.

That behavior isn't appropriate, but neither is the product AB's offers.

Ripoff
Posted by Qurest on 07/09/2012
CENTERPOINT, ALABAMA -- I would recommend any one to eat at Center Point Applebees. Once my friend and I got there, we had to wait 20 minutes to get seated and the restaurant was not even busy. Then, the waitress got our orders all wrong and still charged us for the food we didn't order.

I believe she pocketed that money. We didn't notice until the next day and talking to the manager wasn't very helpful either.

If you're not African American then don't go there, you won't get the service you pay for.

In addition to the server stealing the money for the meals that you didn't order, and poor service, there was a racial thing going on as well? Three strikes and you're out, that's what I say.
Posted by ok4now on 2012-07-09:
I have written several posts and made numerous comments about Applebee's. After giving them many chances at different locations the results are the same. They are poorly managed, the food is mediocre at best and the service is poor. They have mostly kids working there who expect a big tip for doing next to nothing. Yes most of the employees are African American and I am white but I don't see this as a racial issue. They don't discriminate, everybody gets lousy food and service.

Here's another example. Prior to moving the closest Red Lobster to me was staffed almost entirely by African Americans as were the customers. I always received excellent service and the food was good, this was all that mattered to me. Again not a racial issue. I got the service that I paid for.
Posted by frak on 2012-07-10:
Regarding race: Sounds to me like the OP made an observation about what he/she experienced/observed. Just because it was racial in nature is no reason to discount it. Sometimes, when such claims are made, they are true.

Just mentioning a race in a complaint is not a reason to assume an OP is a narrow-minded bigot. Sometimes race IS the problem.

Fine review. Some poor comments. (I marked them as such.)
Posted by Comfortably_Numb on 2012-07-10:
what frak said.
Posted by Cwazychicken on 2012-07-10:
Sometimes race can be a problem but there is no hint of race being the problem in this complain except they mention they are african american. Yes we do live in a world where some people will judge people still based on skin color, but not always does it mean that its the problem and some people do like to just mention it for no reason.
Posted by frak on 2012-07-11:
You forget that in regards to THIS complaint, the ONLY info you have is from the OP. And this OP says there is a problem with not being black while trying to go to this restaurant.

Forget all the political slants about race relations. None of those mean anything when it comes to THIS complaint from THIS OP.

If I were not black, I would never go to the Applebees in Centerpoint, Ala., regardless of how esteemed members of my3cents.com try to spin the OP's experience.

Because of the problem this Applebee's has with non blacks, I think I will skip them altogether, unless they want to defend themselves out here.

Until then, I stand with the OP, not random members who inject their own experiences into this OP's complaint.
Posted by Comfortably_Numb on 2012-07-11:
