BROWARD, FLORIDA -- I made appt with family doc and when I arrived, he would not see me. I had to have appt with a nurse. But they billed insurance for a doctor, when I told Coventry they ignored my email. I made appt with ophthalmologist and when I arrived, he would not see me. I was forced to see an optometrist. But I still had to pay as a specialist which she was not. When I told Coventry nothing was done. My GP dropped all Coventry patients, but Coventry never told me. I found out when I attempted to make an urgent appt. Then I had to wait a few weeks to get a new doc.
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI -- I've battled Coventry healthcare over medical services provided by a doctor since February of this year. I was covered by them for 5 years and the dates of claims are well within those 5 years. I've had to resubmit the claims 4 times since February and no one has ever followed through. Due to their complete disregard for my account and request, my physician terminated my status as a patient and I've been sent to collections.
I've experienced everything from totally rude to completely clueless. The reps who have been in any way helpful still have no control or any way of actually assisting besides checking my account “notes” and telling me “there's no status change yet”. I would not wish this frustration and complete feeling of helplessness on anyone. If you have Coventry or ever had them, all I can say is good luck and get out while you can and while they don't owe you or your doctor any money. They are useless... I'm starting to wonder if their claims department even exists and if there's anyone actually working there other than random customer service reps who can't do anything to help.
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA -- I inquired about adding one of our doctors to the "First Health Network". One of them is already contracted and we are adding a new physician to our practice so I called First Health and spoke to Teresita. She doesn't have a very pleasant bedside manner and after telling her what I wanted to do, she told me to write a letter with all of the doctor's information and fax it to her. I hung up and did so right away. Three days later, I get my letter faxed back to me stating "First Health is for Medication, Coventry is for Doctors, go to Aetna.com to become a provider."
There was no name, phone#, or fax# on the fax letterhead but I assume it came from Teresita since she told me to fax the letter directly to her attention. When I spoke to her she asked if we were contracted with Aetna. I told her "yes we are". So this makes no sense but anyway this First Health/Coventry is not important to us. We've probably seen 3 patients in 5 years with First Health so I will just forget about them. Maybe they are big in other states, but not so much in Arizona. I would not recommend them to any physician or patient.
OMAHA, NEBRASKA -- I had accidentally signed up without the tax credit, realized right away and re-signed up. I called and Coventry told me not to worry about it because it corrected in time. Then sent me a bill anyways for over $200 I could not pay, then canceled my policy completely. Now this is going to screw me over getting insurance from somewhere else. You can be sure I will never go through them for anything ever again.
COLORADO -- I have worked in insurance verification for two years and this has been one of the most frustrating plans I have ever dealt with. I do NOT recommend this plan to anyone. The customer service reps are lacking training and skill and the automated systems are horrible. DO NOT choose this coverage.
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI -- Coventry is just terrible! They made our family accept sub par care for our mother. They made us drive to a distant facility for rehab even though the doctors recommended the one she had surgery in. They made us accept a lower level rehab than the doctor recommended. They are ruthless. I will CANCEL the minute she is out of this care. I would cancel now if I could but it takes 30 days. I urge anyone considering Coventry NOT to do it!!! Coventry has been a BIG BIG MISTAKE!!
URBANDALE, IOWA -- January of 2009, my employer changed from Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield to Coventry because "The savings was unbelievable". One Month later I found that I had testicular cancer. I went to a specialist and they recommend a procedure to remove the cancer and still be able to possible have more children with my wife.
Coventry got an authorization from the Dr. just one day before the surgery and then called me to tell me that they denied the procedure because it was considered experimental. They said that they had evidence from other specialists across the country that the procedure my first Dr had recommended often times did not effectively treat the cancer and it came back twice as often as it would with other treatments.
I was taken aback at first because "How could a Dr ever recommend something that wasn't the best for me?" Coventry said they would pay for me to have a second or even third opinion but they wanted me to have the best outcome for my health. I then went to the MAYO Clinic for the second opinion and they recommended another procedure because of the same reason that Coventry had told me they denied the first one. I was astonished. Six months later I saw an article in the paper that my first doctor was being sued for malpractice. Almost two years later I am in complete remission and Coventry saved my life by caring enough to deny a procedure that was not in my best interest.
SAGINAW, MICHIGAN -- 3 Month old fever of 99 with a bit of a cry. Found low sugar of around 40ish. Multiply attempts at an IV in arm all fail, IV inserted in temporal vein. This was done to raise sugar. After being a bit of a hard head with the doctor I called the child's main physician. After the office called emergency to get details I got back in contact with them and was told "it is common practice to move from arm to head for IV in young patients". Then was told (mind you they called the hospital for the numbers so to speak) "the steps taken were not necessary they could have placed the child on his back(!!!) Or gIVen a oral dosage of ___?___." Does this sound like professionals to you?
