What to do if you can't find IMO SOUR CREAM
Posted by CJA on 04/15/2009
Hello everyone. I work for Dean Foods. IMO Sour cream is still being made. We ship to large distributors, not individual stores, so it is hard to say what stores exactly will have it. It is best to speak with the Dairy Manager at your local store and let them know you want it.

It is still being made. It HAS NOT been discontinued. It is mostly distributed on the West Coast.

is 'imo' immitation?

i know in the past, our local stores would special order items if requested.

great info!

very helpful.

Mad, yes, IMO is imitation sour cream, but is a thousand percent better. It tastes better, and lasts much much longer than 'real' sour cream. It doesn't separate and turn watery like sour cream does. IMO is what sour cream wishes it was. By the way, it is three letters, I-M-O, not one word as my wife insists on calling it, Imo. Thank you, CJA. The Safeway store in Coolidge, AZ discontinued it, and when I inquired about it, everyone treated me like I had just killed their puppy. They had the attitutde, "How dare you question our decision." Safeway in Lacey, WA has quit carrying IMO suddenly, but we can get it at Albertson's or TOP Food and Drug.

Thank you for the info :0)

IMO Sour Cream Substitute is not just used for sour cream; those of use that can not have dairy products at all use it as substitute for mike in our daily cooking. This is something that is always put in my grocery chart and is very much missed.

Through an internet search I have found out that Albertson’s may still be carrying this product. To be totally honest, I like shopping at Safeway, however if I have to make a special trip to another store for this product, I will more then likely just do my grocery shopping there.

I challenge people to speak up and make your request for this product; maybe if enough people speak up we will be heard. For Safeway shoppers you can go to: http://www.safeway.com/IFL/Grocery/Comments

Don't know offhand if Reiter Dairy in Akron, OH (owned by Dean Foods) makes IMO, or if any stores in NE Ohio carries it, but I would like to try it.

In La Mirada, CA I could find IMO at Stater Bros but last time I went in, they had discontinued carrying it. I use it for special gelatin desserts because it sets firmly. I need it for Thanksgiving. Don't know what to do if I can't find it.
Posted by lactose intolerant on 2013-11-25:
A couple weeks ago Dean Foods emailed me and confirmed that they have discontinued the product. For years IMO has been the only "sour cream" my family and I could have. Up until the early 2000's, IMO was actively advertised and was widely available until Dean Foods took it over. It then became much more difficult to find the product and when I called and personally talked to someone at Dean Foods, he was not very nice and he told me that it was a product that was expensive to produce for it required keeping the product separate from the dairy products and that they really had no interest in growing or marketing the product since they felt that the demand was dwindling (uh, yeah....they had stopped marketing it!). He basically told me that they would be discontinuing it down the line and we should enjoy it while it was still being produced. We did get a few more years than I expected, however, none of our holiday (or regular meals requiring sour cream) will ever be the same. The last email they sent me seemed rather unsympathetic to all the people who need a non-dairy sour cream...who also cannot tolerate or do not like the soy sour cream substitutes. Like Mocha Mix Ice Cream, it is another non-dairy product that we will probably never see again, for the large corporations who make these products find it too expensive to cater to a minority of the population with serious health issues.

Where is the IMO?
Posted by Starlord on 12/14/2007
COOLIDGE, ARIZONA -- I used a sour cream substitute for many, many years. The last manufacturer was Dean Foods, the maker of a lot of dips for chips or veggies.

IMO (I-M-O, not I-Mo) tasted much better than so-called real sour cream, it cost about the same, if not a few cents cheaper than sour cream, did not separate, had a much longer shelf life, and mixed with soup mixes to make dips much more smoothly. In my opinion, if they had IMO on the shelf, as far as I was concerned they could trash the sour cream. The only place I could find IMO was the local Safeway store until it suddenly disappeared from the shelves. Safeway has a form you can fill out requesting a product or making a comment or complaint about Safeway. I filled out one of these forms for IMO, and when someone from Safeway called me, she was very short with me, like what business did I have questioning Safeway. First she tried telling me that IMO was no longer manufactured, then later in the call, let it slipped that Safeway had discontinued it.

I found out that it was still being made, and I have been asking all the local grocery stores to order it for me, so far without results. Safeway personnel still act like they despise me for having the audacity to inquire about IMO. I want IMO, not lies and excuses!

The funny thing about sour cream, how do you tell when it's gone bad?
Posted by Anonymous on 2007-12-14:
good question Pirate.I dont eat the stuff, but my wife loves it on tacos.
Posted by Principissa on 2007-12-14:
Bad sour cream smells like yogurt.

I'm sorry you can't find this product. I'm not a fan of sour cream myself, unless it's in veggie dip, so I can't tell you if they sell this product by me. I will say that it's terrible that they can't at least order it for you.

Call the corporate office and see what you can find out.

I hate when I can't find a product anymore. Several years ago Land o' Lakes had macaroni and cheese, it was much better than Kraft, and Big Y was the only place that carried it. Then they stopped carrying it, and I can't find it anywhere. It makes me so sad.

Sara...Land o' Lakes has the best American cheese you buy at the deli counter too.

DB my kids love the Land o Lakes yellow american.

Sarah, I found the mac and cheese in jersey. My sister sends me some once a month because it's the only boxed mac and cheese my kids will eat.

Valveeta has a good Mac and Cheese...I think I remember seeing the Land O' Lakes, but not sure if I've seen it lately, now that you mention it...I'll have to check it out. The Mac and cheese with white cheese is really good.

I think Kraft makes a shells and white cheddar. Kraft Deluxe I believe. It's great for a quick lunch. Mac and cheese and some broccoli or tomatoes. And if I have left over meat from dinner the night before throw that in too.

Starlord, IM(H)O, IMO sounds like something I'd like. Never heard of it. Living alone, by the time I get to about half a container of sour cream, it's yucky and all separated. Is it in the dairy section or on the grocery shelf? I'm going to keep a lookout for it.

PWP, you can tell when it goes bad if after opening the refrigerator door you gag. :)
Posted by CrystalSword on 2007-12-16:
Ponie, it should be right next to the regular sour cream...it whips up real nice with a fork for dips and stuff...hubby loves the stuff but no one here carries it anymore. Any store that carries other DEAN products should have it.

Raley's has IMO. You also might try looking at Safeway still, but in the organic / whole foods dairy case. It might be next to the vegan cheese. At Raley's the IMO is with the whole foods by the fresh goat milk, LOL, and they also stock it in the regular dairy case next to the regular sour cream. That Safeway employee needs to be reported to Safeway corporate in an email or letter by post. That was inappropriate and juvenile, and downright controlling. It's your body, your kitchen, and you have a right to request they carry whatever foods or ingredients you want. We have the right to vote, too, and we damn well have the right to shop somewhere else. Throw another idea at you, try Trader Joe's grocery, too. They carry alot of organic / whole foods / healthier, tastier alternatives(that's all they carry).

An hour away is Whole Foods Market. Why not give them a call. If they have IMO, take a cooler, put in some ice, and go get your fill to bring back home! 5120 S Rural Rd, Tempe, AZ 85282, (480) 456-1400, wholefoodsmarket.com

Good news, gang!! The Safeway store in Lacey has IMO again!! I asked one of the clerks about it, and he said, "someone raised a fuss, so they decided to bring it back." That is the answer, if you want IMO at your store, have your friends all contact the store again and again, demanding they carry IMO. Tip: concentrate on the idea of lactose intolerance. IMO can be used by people who cannot use sour cream, so work on that. Good luck. M3C scores a victory.

I'm gonna try to check out the Safeway store here in Portland! I miss my IMO!! And good to know that if you request it enough, they bring it back! :)

Good news for those of us on the San Francisco Peninsula. Dehoff's Key Market in Redwood City has responded to my request to resume carrying IMO. Non-fermented soy mimics estrogen and may increase your risk of getting breast cancer. (Men get breast cancer, too.) Safeway rejected my request. I even looked in Southern California. Evidently, IMO doesn't sell well because everyone wants "natural" now. But I'll take a few chemicals any day, over increasing my risk of getting breast cancer.

IMO - Where To Find It
Posted by Al R. on 03/02/2009
PHOENIX, ARIZONA -- I've spend a few DAYS tracking down IMO. Finally, I called Dean Foods @ 1-800-854-3243 and talked to Carrie. As I live in Arizona, she stated the item code was 2125100 and Albertson's had just ordered 16 cases as of Mar. 01, 2009. Sure enough, Albertson's had several on hand at their store. I told the store manager I just 'discontinued' shopping at Safeway and Albertson's just gained a new customer. I would strongly urge ALL OF YOU in search of IMO to do the same, if you want to see IMO remain on the shelves of your local store(s).

Remember - they WANT your business. Tell them what YOU want ...

Al R.

Where is the IMO?
Posted by Ynnig on 01/30/2009
Why has IMO disappeared from the shelves? I can't find it anywhere. I can't tolerate regular sour cream and I've been using IMO for over 20 years.

Why is it gone from all the local grocery stores and when will it be coming back? No one is offering any replacements! Very unhappy without it!

When we moved to Washington from Arizona, I thanked Safeway up here for carrying IMO. Safeway in Coolidge, AZ had quit carrying IMO, and when I inquired about it, the people at Safeway got very nasty to me, like how dare I question them. I called DeanFoods, INc, which makes IMO,and was assured that it was still being made, and that they shipped thousands of 16 ounce containers every week. Well, it seems I thanked them too soon. The lasst two weeks, the Safeway store in Lacey, WA has had no IMO at all. tonight, we were in the TOP Foods store in Lacey, and found one (1) carton of IMO. As ynnig said, it tastes far better than sour cream, does not separate, and lasts much longer than regular sour cream. What is it with IMO? I want IMO for my baked potato, my dip (combine Mrs. Grass Onion Soup with IMO)or any other place one might use sour cream.

You can't even find it on the Internet. Why?

Great Dips
Posted by on 11/21/2011
Dip
Dip
I had a few buddies come over the other day to watch the game. I usually bring out the chips and salsa when they come over. I picked up a bag of ruffles and tortilla chips I wanted to try a different dip this time around.

I made my way over to the dairy aisle to pick up something, and I noticed Deans sold a few varieties of dips, I decided to pick up a french onion dip for the ruffles, and they also had a Guac dip that I picked up for the tortilla chips.

Let me tell you these dips were delicious especially the french onion one they go great with ruffles. And the Guac dip was equally good I'll pick these up again next time I have company over.

I've tried these dips and the onion and ranch are good. I disagree about their guacamole though. I prefer homemade. I make a mean guacamole dip: avocados, cilantro, onions, little tomato, and some lemon and lime juice. YUM!

I make my own pico de gallo, shorty. Wally is spot on about Dean's dips. What is even better, is hard to find, and is also made by Dean's. I refer to IMO (eye-mo), sour cream substitute. It is a fantastic product, but finding it is a bit spotty, considering the lady answering their corporate phone says they make thousands of packages of it daily. Mix 1 sixteen ounce tub of IMO with an envelope of Mrs. Grass' onion soup mix, for the best French onion dip.
Posted by Anonymous on 2011-11-22:
Dry onion soup mix does make great dip when mixed with sour cream. But it's hard to find the onion soup mix now. I've also used it in my stroganoff for extra flavor.

When we find Mrs. Grass soup mixes, we stock up. Neither of us finds Lipton's mix of the quality we look for. Bon Appetit!

Yes, Shorty, that is where we discovered it. they usually have it at WalMart and Safeway, possibly Albertson's, too.

I'll look for it next time I go grocery shopping.
Posted by Old Timer on 2011-11-22:
We pick up I think it's Lowery's French Onion mix and add it in with fresh sour cream. It's not too bad, but Wally's find looks a lot more simple and if its better, that's a bonus.

Hands down, Wally is the current Foodie Guru. At least until Zz wonders back by, then its game on.
Posted by Starlord on 2011-11-22:
Granted, Dean's does make a great onion dip. We juist feel that Mrs. Grass and IMO are an unbeatable combination. We have tried all the brands we could find, but none compare to Mrs. Grass. Shorty, it comes in a box with, IIRC, two envelopes in it.

Try Deans Foods directly (deansfoods.com) and you might find where to buy IMO in Central California. As far as I know, you are in an area where just about any store should carry IMO. I agree totally that Dean's Foods needs to advertise IMO, if for no other reason the ability to be consumed by people who are lactose intolerant. Why not have everyone email Dean's and suggest they start an advertising campaign to get the name of IMO before the public? Increased advertising can only mean more sales of a fine product known about by very few of us.
