Our Experience at DirectBuy

I feel our experience at DirectBuy was different than the ones posted on some of the reviews.

We went to the open house, were treated with utmost courtesy by everyone that was employed by the Anaheim California DirectBuy facility. We knew going into this that there was going to be a membership fee, but we didn't know how much.
We were not pressured in any way, shape or form.

They asked us what type of purchases we were planning to make. We are updating our kitchen, buying new appliances, wood floors, window coverings, etc. (some major purchases). They allowed us to look at as many books as we wanted, they explained how to read the books, etc. Because we went in without any prior shopping at other places (Home Depot, Lowes, etc)

We didn't really know how much of a savings there would be from DirectBuy. Knowing we had 3 days to cancel the contract (it plainly states in big letters on the back of contract) we signed up and paid for the membership in full ($5800.00) We left there immediately and went to the local appliance store & Home Depot and got prices on the appliances we wanted. We looked at hardwood and priced it. We returned to DirectBuy the next morning and got their prices on the same floor and appliances. Their was an $800.00 savings on the appliances, $3000.00 savings on the wood floors.

The even told us about a $300.00 rebate from GE that we could get. Last night we looked on the internet and saw how so many people (those who didn't join) were so quick to decide that DirectBuy is a scam, we got scared and went over to Direct Buy today and cancelled our contract. We told them we wanted to cancel, NO ONE gave us any problem, they were so kind and nice. We just told them that we didn't think it would benefit us in the long run. Our credit card was immediately refunded the money. The gal said that is their policy for those that cancel within 3 business days.

Sooooo---we hope we haven't made a mistake in cancelling our contract. We just got back from Home Depot and the cabinets we want are double the price of DirectBuy, for THE SAME CABINETS!!!!!!

From what I've heard about DirectBuy is if you're building a home that costs seven figures and up, you can probably save money by becoming a member. But for a schmuck like me, it would be money down the drain. (Yeah--I have a few acquaintances--but not many--who can afford homes in that price range.)

My home is not seven figures, but it was flooded and had to be gutted. I had insurance money, but it wasn't enough to put in top quality stuff. I joined direct buy and was able to install top of the line cabinets, granite countertops, pella windows, wood and tile floors, etc. for less than it would have cost me to do it cheaply retail. Direct Buy was perfect for me and I've continued to use it since finishing my home. It's worth the membership price depending on how you use. And even though I paid for my membership in full when I bought it, they do have options so you can pay over time.

$6,000 to Join and what do you get?

Do your homework. DirectBuy is not the answer. In the late 90's the dues to belong were about 2200.. today, however, they are upwards of $6,000 to join. And yes, then you tack on the 8% handling fee that the franchise owner also pockets.. and you soon realize that this is not anywhere near the savings indicated during the 2 hour presentation.

DirectBuy franchise owners are making oodles of money by getting you to fork over this kind of cash. If you aren't able to pay, you are not allowed to join for 7 years... I do not know how it will ever be possible to have this company banned in all states but someone needs to do this. Put these franchises out of business and make them go look for work.

The only thing obtained by joining a directbuy franchise is that you would be feeding the greed of the franchise owners. Dont.. you can find better deals for the things you want and/or need elsewhere.

This company is like belonging to a club. You join, then you can purchase at the wholesalers prices. It is useless unless you intend to do a lot of shopping. The only benefit I can see is if you used it as a business, not as a regular consumer.

Many people that have come on here said that the well padded, over inflated shipping and handling fee's eat up what ever little savings there may have been in the first place.

Super maybe. But I wonder how much people think it costs to ship a sofa or a tv or a bedroom suit. I once had someone say (when I sold on Ebay) that charging $50 to ship a bass guitar in a hard case was excessive. They paid $40 for the guitar and felt that shipping shouldn't cost more than the item. I explained that I can sell a bowling bar for a dollar but I couldn't ship it for that.

People don't understand the concept of weightxheightxlength plus distance. yea...it can get expensive. Especially since most larger, heavy items have to go freight.

Direct Buy - How to be a Good Consumer

I have read several negative reviews about Direct Buy. All of those reviews have the same thing in common. It appears that the reviewers did not pay attention to the information presented when they purchased their memberships and they also didn't ask pertinent questions before purchasing membership. I am a Direct Buy member. However, I did not become a member when I first learned of this company. Why? Because I don't shop retail, so there was no savings involved in becoming a member. I also did not want to wait several weeks for my items to come in. That was before my home flooded and had to be gutted. Once that happened, I joined Direct Buy because it was the smartest move I could make to save money on my extensive renovations. The Customer Service at Direct Buy is very poor. The ordering system is inconvenient and time consuming. Being forced to drive 30 minutes to the location to check prices and order items is beyond ridiculously inconvenient. However, I saved over $20,000, so it was worth it to me. Of course, I spent many thousands to get that savings. If you aren't going to buy high ticket items that are substantially reduced through Direct Buy, then you probably don't want to join this club. Or if you want to receive items quickly. Or if you don't want the hassle of having to go to one location to check pricing. Direct Buy is very, very good for specific types of purchasing. Pay attention at the presentation. Do the research before you buy a membership. Ask plenty of questions.

By being a good consumer you'll be happy with your Direct Buy membership purchase and you won't be one of the many who write complaints about Direct Buy and wish they could get your money back.

Yea, and they are all lying about the high pressure sales tactics, the lies from the sales people about prices, delivering damaged merchandise, having higher prices than retailers. All these people are lying. Do a search on direct buy complaints, I highly doubt all those people are lying. I call BS on this review, not helpful. But welcome to the site and have a swell day.

I think I mentioned that the customer service is poor. That would encompass the high pressure sales tactics. I certainly didn't indicate that anybody was lying. I simply indicated that being a good consumer would make it easy to avoid problems. Also, there is a reason that you have to buy the membership right away. I mention it in one of my comments on another direct buy complaint. It is a very good reason and is why I had to wait years to purchase my Direct Buy membership once I turned down the initial pitch. I hope this clarification helps, but please feel free to let me know if you need more info.

How about a company not trying to rip people off. Again, all these complaints cannot be wrong. All of these people can not be lying. And any company that will not allow you to do business with them again for a certain time frame for turning them down, is not worth my time. Sorry, again not helpful. I honestly do not want any more information on this company, but thanks for the offer. I'll just be smart and research products and compare prices myself for free.

Wow, Principissa, have you ever used Direct Buy? I don't think all of these people are lying. I think probably all of these people are telling the truth. I just keep pointing out that alot of their problems come from not being good consumers. Some of their problems are from poor customer service, which I agree is rampant at Direct Buy. However, if you want to understand why they won't let you come back, you need to read my other post. There is a valid reason. Anyway I don't understand why you appear to be so angry with Direct Buy if you have never used it, but I hope that you will read my other post. If you don't that is fine with me. everyone should always read the fine print whether its their mortgage papers or their direct buy membership which costs about the same as their mortgage :)

I went for a DirectBuy "open house" and laughed at them once I learned what they were all about and viewed their merchandise. It seemed as if everything I was looking at was more "off brand" merchandise.

just not my thing and I knew it then...I must be a good consumer

Never have, never will. But I'm glad you are happy with them. I don't think they are bad consumer's at all. I think they were ripped off by a dishonest and greedy company. Sadly I must be a bad consumer for not wanting to have to sit through hours of high pressure sales tactics only to be told that if I don't buy now I'll never have a chance again. Like I said, I'm glad you're pleased with them, but I'll spend my mortgage payment on my house. Oh and by the way, my friend went to one of these "open houses" and laughed all the way out the door. She must be a bad consumer like me.

Hubbard53, sounds like you are a good consumer. I too laughed at Direct Buy and turned them down. Then my house flooded. I bought my Pella windows, Starmark cabinets and Warmly Yours heating element for underneath my tile floors from Direct Buy. I saved many thousands. I had to be persistent though. Even my contractor, who is a certified Pella installer, could not beat my window pricing. Thanks for commenting!

I have to agree with some of the things the poster says here. If you're one of the 'upper echelon' consumers, Direct Buy may be just the place for you. In the commercial run most frequently locally, the couple states their 'breakfast set' would cost (I think)$3,500 elsewhere, but they got it for $1,500. Heck! In my previous apartment (1,300 sqft) I had a 'formal' dining room. I paid about $1,000 for my table and six chairs for my dining room, let alone a 'breakfast room' set.

It's for these very same reasons I don't belong to Costco, Sam's Club, etc. On my drive to their locations, I pass KMart, two regular Wal*Mart stores, a SuperCenter WM, and a couple of Meijer stores. By scanning their weekly flyers, I look for the sales of products at close to the same price that these 'clubs' offer. I wouldn't recoup the membership fees. Also, sometimes to get the greatest value at Costco, Sam's Club, etc., you have to buy in quantities larger than what I want. There's just so much storage space in an apartment.

Since I've never joined, I can't knock Direct Buy. It's also for these reasons I can't knock Costco, Sam's Club, etc. I believe they all serve a purpose. They just don't fit mine.

This is a scam. Period. You end up paying a huge upfront money for the membership and then you pay periodically in lieu of the promised savings off the retail price of their world of merchandises.

We were invited to attend their meeting/information session and after elaborate videos and testimonies in an 35 minute performance we were offered of buy their membership that was quite substantial to start with. We were not prepared to spend that kind of money although the concept seemed attractive and asked for time to get back to them. They got aggressive and told us that this would be our last chance to enter in their membership. We of course did not like their under the gun approach and walked. Here is the common sense summary of this scheme. Yes this is a scheme. You pay a substantial money to get locked into their membership. You are restricted to their catalogs and the choice of their products. You are dependent on their view of the discount you are supposed to get. Truth is, if you are thrifty and are a careful shopper, you would not ever want to be in this situation.

One more thing. I noticed that most of the reviews are sell outs and artificial. How can someone say with conviction that I save soooooomuch money with confidence. It can only be a probability. The informercialratings.com and their cousin infomercialscams.com both endorses this product are in business to sell infomercials. So it does not help them or similar sites their cause to print negative reviews and comments.

Just use your head and stay away from Direct Buy. This is an aggressive marketing machine.

Directbuy Very Deceptive Advertising Practices

80031, COLORADO -- Directbuy harvested my info from the Colorado home & garden show when I entered their contest.

They then called me to invite me to their showroom. They even emailed me the info.
After making the appointment with them and driving about an hr away to talk to them and see their showroom, we were greeted by the store manager.

She quietly advised us that we had to attend a presentation on Directbuy. At this time, we would be allowed to look at their catalog prices etc. However, we would then be required to sign up with them ($5000 for a 3 yr membership). If we didn't sign up, we won't be allowed to sign up for another 7 yrs. If we were not sure at that time then we should not take part in the "open house". Very deceptive practices. They could have easily told this to us BEFORE making the appointment instead of wasting our time and gas. Their excuse was that they "ran out of this written info" at the home show.

They conveniently also forgot to tell this to us when they called us to set up the appointment and when they emailed us the map directions. This was the NW Denver branch. Bad sales practices. I won't sign up with such a company.

I hope you didn't shell out the $5000. From what I have seen their prices are 10-25% higher than what you can find on your own from other places. IMO DirectBuy is one of the biggest scams out there. It is for rich, stupid people.

This entity reminds me of wholesale buying groups, except retailers need a variety of products everyday. I doubt many consumers who are members make out with one of these memberships.

We received a call after i went to the website. They sent an invite to the showroom that is over 3 hours from us. We have family that is at 1.5 hours away but cannot afford the gas, to even go and them. I told the rep it would be over a year before we could get there to see what they had to offer, mainly because we do not have the money set aside for getting the home we want. I was still sent an invite and it still sits on my desk but at this point, The invite was not dated and all we have to do when ready is to give them a call and they will "pencil us in."

Thanks for the info, hubby and i will now re-discuss working with them.

DirectBuy was ripping off it's members for years with 300%-400% inflated S&H fee's. Once busted for it now they run add spots saying this item or that item comes with no S&H fee's. It's way to late as the World knows they were ripping off members for S&H fee's.

Chuck...now wait a minute...have you ever even used Direct Buy? My Father-in-law built a house about the same time I did and we compared notes...He used Direct Buy and I did not, and it was interesting the difference in prices/savings...now I realize you have to factor in the $5000 fee (which I think is kind of steep)...but if you have the time and patience to price a lot of items out vs just going to a store/builder and picking from a list, you can save money in the long run using Direct Buy (especially on higher cost items)...And I guarantee you, he is definitely well-off--but is not anywhere near stupid, especially when it comes to being cost-effective. I am not advcating Direct Buy, personally I don't have the time or patience--but it can benefit consumers who do...

I'd think that Direct Buy would be more for people who are into flipping houses. Those that need a large qty of a lot of things at once. But I can't see that after putting in $5k how it would save you much from the day to day things. If you only used it once, that $5000 sofa set would actually be $10K. Not a smart buy if you ask me.

These types of stores need to be shut down, people think that since they are paying a membersip fee, they will save money, but how much stuff do you have to buy before you actually start saving money. The ads are very deceptive, The way the product looks on TV, the people got ripped of, even getting it the "so-called" sale price.

I think the $5,000 can be thought of as similar to a wholesale license.

We have friends that were remodeling and the top dollar windows at Direct Buy were 65% less than at a retail store. If you are remodeling and want high quality items, you can save at Direct Buy, it seems.

The membership fee is good for a lifetime--after 3 years you pay $100/year, so I guess in the long haul it could be okay. Not a member, but I can see doing it if you are doing a big or continual remodel on your own house. It's not just a store you go to buy one or two small items.

I guess you do have to have the resources to invest the original $5,000--so that would make most of the clients pretty well-off. The majority of people with big bank-rolls are not stupid, so I also disagree with that reasoning.

the membership is not good for a lifetime, if you still have to pay money, Lifetime means Lifetime. Did they actually do price checking or just take directbuys word for it, a lot of stores, put retail value, then their price, but you would never find it for the retail price anywhere, except for like stores like Neman Marcus.

The membership fee is good for a lifetime--after 3 years I guess you could call it a maintenance fee. In any event, $100 is a far cry from $5,000.

They did check around for high quality window prices well before joining. They really did their homework. (Because they aren't stupid.) Anyway, they are happy with the quality of everything they have purchased--they remodeled a bath and kitchen too and did save a lot of money. Sure, they could have probably bought cheaper quality stuff at Home Depot, but, again, they were going for quality.

I worked at Directbuy in California for 6 months, if you want the absolute truth here it is. DirectBuy is the worst company on earth to be employed by, associated with, or have a membership with!

Directbuy is a corporation that is franchised, which means that someone owns each center, so they are all run differently. The one I worked for was Directbuy of Burbank California owned by Greg and Gail Ruetz. They are absolute blood suckers! They promised each employee a 401k when the center opened in 2007, not one employee has seen a 401k, any type of retirement plan, or even a christmas bonus!!!! All they care about is YOUR MONEY. They know nothing, not one thing about the products they sell, but you can be assured one of them will greet you with a fake smile as soon as you walk in the door.

From the moment you walk in the door, you will be preyed upon. Its costs $6500 to join this garbage corp for 2 years. They say they dont mark anything up, but there is a 8% handling charge on everything, isnt that a markup? None of the employees are actually trained, I was thrown onto the floor and forced to learn about 800 manufacturers on my own. Then, two weeks later, 75% of our staff was laid off. Wow. All the owners want is more money and more members! To give you an example of the service you will get, our center has 1500 members and 3, yes 3 people that work in the service department!! Unbelievable.

When you walk in the door, everything is set up. From the way the greasy salesman shakes your hand to the "hows your day going so far" questions, its all script. Then you hear the stupid story about Directbuy and they act like your friend with small talk. Then, you watch 3 horrific movies about DB in a presentation that is much like a timeshare presentation. After the ordeal, where they lie to you about many many things, then you are sent off to a high pressure salesman who will tell you to join or never comeback. If you are not smart enough to smell scam at this point, you are simply weak.

Once they have your money, they couldnt care less about you or what you need. The fake smiles go away, and the truth comes out. You will wait from 4 weeks to 16 weeks for your merchandise, and if it comes in damaged, you will wait that long again. Shipping is expensive and in most cases will bring the cost of the merchandise well above what you could have gotten it in the store for.

You will not save money at Directbuy unless you are remodeling a kitchen with $100,000 budget, and even then its not worth the hassle, problems, and the wait!!

I despise this company. They are immoral, they treat their employees like garbage, and they lie about everything.

Bottom line, run away from Directbuy! Thank god I no longer work there. Now I can sleep at night.

To followup, no, I did not give them ANY $. Total scam company. Costco is definitely the way to go. Great service/return policy/easy to deal with and membership only starts at $50 and is refundable!
There are other better, easier ways to get deals at reputable retailers!

DirectBuy "wholesale" membership club

TUCSON, ARIZONA -- I was curious about DirectBuy ads I had seen. I had been a member of "Consumers Plus" which went out of business in 2006. That club charged about $1500 to join (in the 90s), their yearly dues were $45, and their handling fee was 5%. I saved a lot of money furnishing a new home using their services. I have no complaints about them whatsoever, except that they went out of business. The only problem was that anything I ordered through them could not be returned.

Before I attended the DirectBuy presentation on 12/30/2006, I was first disturbed by the lack of ANY information they were willing to give about their business prior to my "Free Pass by Invition Only" visit.

At the "Invitation Only" visit the visitors were told not to ask questions until the end of their prentation; that is how they had determined that the presentation worked the best (they did not say it worked the best to their benefit). Then before we had a change to utter a single question we were escort out of the meeting room, each visitor having a private sales person to talk to. Therefore, visitors were unable to gain additional knowledge from other visitors questions.

I asked about their prices for about a dozen items which I was in the market to purchase. They were able to only provide a price for one item. They are either extremely disorganized due to imcompetence or due to intentially making sure no prices are available to potential members.

I happened to have a big end of year bonus and thought I could save money with my upcoming purchases so I signed up. The sales person never explained to me that my son would not qualify as a member on my account. He only asked if my son was present and I said he was not. According to the contract a dependent child has to be under 23 and a ful time student to be allowed member beneits at the club. The verbal commitment to add my son at a later date was meaningless since the contract voided all verbal promises. So they lied to my about my son being able to have the membership after I passed away was never going to happen.

Since I'm almost 60, I wanted my son to be a member. He is 25, so the huge member fee - about $4600 for 3 years, would not go to waste if I should die in the next few years. But DirectBuy woesnot work that way.

I had alsomade to believe during the presentation that this company had been around for some 30 years. Yes, maybe, but under various names. Also only the local franchise was responsible for providing any member benefits. Nothing like Costco, whre you can travel the country and use your $50/year costco membership to buy items on the shelf.

For DirectBuy it is specificlly stated that if you order an item you vae to pay everything up front" the cost of the time, taxes, their 8% handling fee and the cost of shipping with is often 15% of the cost of the ite,. They never couted actual shipping fees but I was able to figure out the rough cost for freight.

Then as a final insult if I ordered something, they could change the price afterwards at any time and I would have to pay the additional fees within 7 days. There was no one to lend support at DirectBuy if anything went wrong with the item. The buyer would have to deal with the problem alone.

The membership cost in no way guarantees any savings to the club member. No 110 % price guarantee. Nothing. You pay $4600 just for the right to order items using them as the middle man (no DIRECT BUY here - DirectBuy is an oxymoron), paying them $4600 for the right to place orders there during the first 6 months, then $200/year for the next 7 years. After that you could continue at the then current yearly fee which has been increased at each possible turn.

The bottom line is that this is a lucrative business tothe owner - very similar to timeshares.

A consumer ha to take incto acount the risk that they never save any money, that the DBA company goes out of business, and that the $4600 invested wisely would provide a substantial income to offset the cost os buing items at retail. Due to all retail stores having sales 40-70% off and the internet becoming a better low cost supplier for all goods there relly is no need to join this scam operation to make a few people line their pokets with your money and to get his and her Mercedence Benz as a yearly bonus.

I had a feeling this was a sleezy organization due to their red flag tactics but I stll wanted to see for my self.

Now that I cancelled my contract it will take them 15 business days to refund me my money!! How true to their bisuness model. It also looks like they are trying to withhold $25 and not refund me the entire cost of the membership which I paid for. They never explained the contract and never pointed to the important information I should read on the back page. I can only plame my self for not reading that.

But regardless, I enjoy writing a letter of complaint about this company and its deceiving practices to the BBB and the Camber of Commerce.

There is a whole lot more wrong with what they did bu I thik you get the idea.

I've never heard anything good about DirectBuy. Something about having to pay a huge fee just to join then yearly dues and on top of that handling fees really turns me off. Sounds too much like a timeshare.

I am also a member and we had a fire so for our situation it was financially worth it. However it was a huge hassle none of things on the "members" website ever had any prices and fishing through those catalogs is a job all in itself. aside from being extremely convenient LISTEN TO THIS SCAM! We ordered our cabinets through them, then were told granite countertops can be purchased for the same price a corian so we were intersted. they gave us the name of a local company-Palace designs. We called them, booked our own consult, went and picked our own slab, scheduled all the fittings and installations. then Direct buy calls me with a bill- They were trying to charge me over 600.00 in "handling fees/taxes. I said hell no I am not paying a penny more then the quote I got from the company. So because it was unsettled they withheld merchandise fully paid for until the situation was resolved. SCAM ARTISTS ALL THE WAY

Denied Repair Claim

N/A -- This company is truly a fraud!!!! They live off the terms and conditions that states that they will not honor "preexisting" conditions but in no way have no true way of confirming whether or not a condition is/was preexisting-despite the complaints found online and on several sites, (always listen to your inner voice) I purchased a warranty from them anyway-my car is 6 years old and only has 71777 miles on it which is in line with the allotted annual miles-i have kept my car in pristine condition since it was purchased in 2010 and always had "on time" check ups that are documented from the dealership, plus the car was still under factory warranty when I purchased the car because of the low miles -my car was 210 miles passed its next oil change when I noticed that it was leaking anti freeze-i scheduled a oil change & tire rotation and asked that the dealership check the leak-found out that the leak was needing a water pump and some other (covered under warranty) maintenance that added up to about 1200.00-The dealership called Directbuy and "surprise" they said it was a "pre-existing" condition-the same line they seem to give every customer when they don't want to honor a warranty-i asked did they request any documentation from the dealership to come to that perception from a non-tech call center representative and of course they did not because it didn't matter! They also stated that it was only 6 days or so that my warranty was active, which is irrelevant when you have deemed yourselves as honorable! I find that this company is a scam and I am not surprise that they are not even apart of the BBB. I caution anyone wanting to purchase a extended warranty outside of the dealership- I have gladly paid the dealership 1200.00 Plus to fix my car and would gladly pay any repair amount than pay a company not worthy of anyone's business!!!

I immediately cancelled my contract and they can keep the 330.00 Plus dollars I paid toward the deposit and prorated 1st month, apparently that is how they make their money is by your deposits!!!!

In addition, if the contract or insurance tells you that they decline any pre-existing conditions "do not purchase" unless they send someone to check out your car or even your health-they will deny you when they think you need them-but surprise to them I don't need you! I am better than bless!

I thank Direct Buy for learning about SCAM's with them, that's about the only good thing I can say about it. Every story here about saving's not adding up to what they say, poor customer service, is the TRUTH, if you want to learn with @ 5000.00 tag this lesson go ahead, they give you all of that .

Direct Buy Scam

I read only one compliment on Direct Buy so he is obviously on the pay roll. I had a run in with them yesterday where I was followed into the car park being abused by a manager as I was trying to get into my car with my walker. I since researched them and found they are being sued in a class action law suit with 800,000 people. I am going to join this it is time they were shut down. 39 Judges recently refused their settlement of 15 million. They are scam artists you just need to Google Direct Buy complaints to find out all about them. If anyone has any info on Florida lawyers dealing with this please e mail me.
