ILLINOIS -- I had a Discover Card. Paid ON TIME and then they DOUBLED my minimum payment. They were "helping" me pay down my balance. I could NOT pay a DOUBLED minimum amount. I was paying the minimum but don't think you are helping me by doubling the amount. I told them since they are asking an amount I can't pay... I would be filing bankruptcy, and I did.

LEVITTOWN, NEW YORK -- I was informed that I was alerted by emails, mail and phone calls. Emails and mail is considered junk mail to me. But a phone call would have alerted me that there was an issue. They would not waive $28.71 late charge, so I paid off my amount and happily closed my credit card account and bid "farewell" to Discover after years of being a consumer. Hope the $28.71 was worth it for them. :)

Pre-Approval is a Scam!!!
By -

Discover just sent out a mass mailing to many prospective clients telling them that they have been "pre-approved" for 12 months of interest free. The mailing sent a certificate of pre-approval and said that you can go online to mydiscover.com for an instant approval. I went, completed the information, and waited to receive my "online response". Instead, the site directed me to sign up for "free trials" for protecting my identity and credit checks. It did NOT give an option to "exit" this information.

I called the number on the response and the agent told me that I was denied credit with Discover. I asked her "why" I received a "pre-approval" and why I didn't get my "online response" as indicated in the letter. She told me that Discover obtain my information from a Major Credit Bureau which indicated I met the criteria Discover was looking for in a customer, however, she said that after running my credit they found that I did "NOT" meet the criteria they were interest in for a customer. I told the representative that I will take my $250,000 household income elsewhere and that I will "never" be interested in an account with Discover since I do not meet their criteria.

My family has a good payment history and we will stick with our CitiBank, American Express, and HSBC cards. I asked her to "remove" my name from any future offers that I do NOT want to ever receive a card from them. I also told her that they need to fix their website to now try to "trick" a "rejected" client from signing up for something an offer they have when that client hasn't even been approved by them. I feel this is VERY SNEAKY on their part and we should have laws against this type of marketing!!!

My two cents: Do not do business with Discover! They are very selective on who they want as a client and try to trick those rejected for credit into signing up for something thinking they have been approved! Have a nice day all!

Discover Card Does Not Honor Commitments They've Made
By -

My wife lost her job and it was becoming difficult for us to make our Discover Card payment. I called them and the customer service representative told me that we qualified for a program where they would close the account and have an agreed upon amount automatically taken from our checking account on a designated date each month. They reduced our annual interest rate to 7.00% annually. The representative enthusiastically told me that as long as we made these payments on time each month, we would continue to qualify for this reduced interest rate.

Money was tight with the loss of my wife's income, but I made sure that this bill was paid on time each month because with the interest rate being so reasonable I could see our balance lower each month. In fact, the Discover Card representative told me that if we stayed on program the balance of our Discover Card in five years. To my surprise, when I received my January 2010 statement it indicated that only a minimum payment was due, which was less than the amount I'd agreed to pay on on the repayment, and the interest rate had increased to 29.99%.

I thought there must be some mistake so I called Discover Card. After being transferred four times to four different people, the only answer I was able to get from Discover Card was that this program was only for 12 months, that their representative was incorrect when he said that I would be eligible for this reduced interest for the next five years. The only suggestion was that I call a credit counseling agency. They made absolutely no effort to live up to the promises they made me when I enrolled with this program.

The U.S. economy is the worst it's been since the Great Depression, millions of American have lost their jobs, house foreclosures and bankruptcies are at record levels, but Discover Card doesn't care about this - they just want to make sure that they collect their "loan shark" interest rates. Credit card companies are "organized crime". I've had a Discover Card for over 25 years. I feel like I've been duped. I will never give them my business and will recommend to everyone I know that they do the same.

Chase Bank and Well Fargo set me up on similar programs to repay our credit card after my wife lost her job.
Guess what? I'm still on these programs, they getting paid a reasonable rate of interest on the credit card balance, and I'm watchin' the balance go down each month. It's too bad that Discover Card is so greedy, that they won't let their customers continue with this program during these trying economic time. Don't do business with Discover Card they have no integrity and don't live up to the agreements they make!

Loyalty Means Nothing to Discover
By -

GLENDALE, CALIFORNIA -- My mother-in-law has been a loyal Discover Card holder for over 23 years and has never been late, not once. Recently, she received a letter that her interest rate got bounced up to 25.99% from 12.99% because of the economical crisis that Discover is experiencing. My mother-in-law is on a very low fixed income from her Social Security and barely gets $800 per month to live on. Also, due to a flood of her living space, many of her papers were destroyed, including her April 2009 Discover statement, so she thought. So immediately Discover charged her a $40 late fee... her balance is less than $1000 and she has a $18,000 limit.

So my wife called Discover on behalf of her mother and pleaded with customer service to reverse the fees and lower the interest rate and they said that if she make the payment by phone for April and May 2009, then they might reverse the late fee only after the payment is processed and then my mother-in-law needs to call to request the reversal herself (she hardly speaks any English), but there is no promises or guarantees. As for the interest rate, there was nothing that Discovery can supposedly do.

So basically, Discover is trying to rectify the money they are losing from the poor economy by charging their perfect to nearly perfect customers more than twice the interest rate, and not showing any loyalty back to their clients that have a perfect record. What kind of Customer Service Oriented Financial Institution is this? It's a Rip off and the CEO David Nelms is responsible for everything that happens with the company and its financial supporters - meaning its customers.

DISCOVER CARD IS A RIP OFF, THE CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS, AND THE CEO IS SCREWING EVERYONE THAT IS A CUSTOMER. This is far from being over and we will pursue justice on behalf of our mother until the CEO David Nelms gives an answer himself!!!

Discover Card: Fraud, Bait and Switch, RICO?

I was solicited by a Discover Card Representative to make a balance transfer. Her come-on was that the balance and related purchases to the offer would be interest free for the life of the balance with a defined % monthly retirement. She had stated that the conversation may be recorded for quality control so my son also recorded and witnessed the conversation. She basically said that she had checked with her supervisor and after my requesting and reconfirming Discover's offer of 0% for the life of the balance and related purchases, I agreed to the transfer conditional on the exact terms and conditions which were offered.

Now as you can guess Discover has refused to honor the terms of the transfer and they are playing the game of misapplying payments to interest charges. Via certified mail I have disputed their interest charges and have sent them a copy of the recording of the transaction with their representative and an affidavit by my adult son, clearly setting the terms and conditions at 0% for the life of the balance and related purchases.

They have ignored the issues of the dispute and are attempting to bully me into accepting their after-the-fact changes to the terms and conditions of the transfer. (No Discover representative has called me who has read the dispute file, listened to the recording, or who has the authority to resolve the matter.) I have discussed this with my attorney and he feels that with the recording and having a witness, if negotiation fails I will have strong grounds on which to sue Discover for Fraud, Breach of Contract, Bait and Switch as well Defamation of Character.

Also I have discussed the matter a Federal agent who thinks that Discover and their officers may have criminal liability under the RICO Act. I just wanted to put this information out to allow other Discover victims to know that there may be future civil and criminal litigation aimed at putting a major dent in Discover's wallet, which seems to be the only thing they care about. (Wouldn't it be nice to ask Discover Card, "what is in your wallet?" and they had to say, "nothing since we lost the law suits".)

SALT LKE CITY, UTAH -- An agreement was reached in a telephone negotiation for debt settlement on the account of myself (the client). In that agreement I (the client) agreed to direct electronic payment which has been in effect for at over a period of years to this point. In addition several additional payments have been made outside of the agreement to assist in a rapid settlement of account.

Upon receiving statements with an interest rate of 28.99%, I (the client) phoned several times to negotiate a no interest applied rate to decrease the payoff time of the debt. I (the client) was informed this would be only possible based on past good faith practices (PRACTICE PROVIDED) and as myself (the client) would be receiving an adjustment to interest on further statements. This was stated in conversation with two separate reps at Discover and presumably approved. This was a proposal offered in original agreement, if good faith payments were applied, a no interest payment plan would be considered.

I (the client) find these practices to be unclear to either your staff or organizational levels of understanding as to authority, to grant conditions or modifications of agreements, all while offering assurances to clients actions are duly noted and applied to account. FRAUDULENT and/or IN-APPROPRIATE. For a considerable amount of time I (the client) am receiving an interest rate posted at 28.99%. I (the client) request or demand by clients rights, that the account be researched for participating reps, recorded conversations, call communication logs, notations to account, etc. seeking proof of conversations and actions as promised.

It is expected this matter will be researched and resolved immediately. I (the client) await your immediate findings as I (the client) believe Finance Center reps have violated the truth, of individual authority to negotiate, approve, rectify or modify agreements on these matters. Letter submitted three times, NO RESPONSES. This letter forwarded to CA State AT&T Gen Offices and FDIC. NO HELP, NO ANSWERS. They only back Banks, not consumers.

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!
By -

Discover Card called my home asking to speak with a person who no longer lives with me and hasn't lived with me for over one year. I do not own a Discover Card, never have owned one and had nothing to do with the call. I was just unlucky enough to answer my own home phone. Then they kept asking for a phone number. The tone of the operator's voice was truly aggressive and truthfully scary. I told them I didn't know how to help them and that I was rushed to get my two very young children to Kindergarten. The operator was sarcastic and scary. That's all I know. I have no idea what the phone call was about and it also had nothing to do with me.

I again have no Discover Card, never have, and at this point never will. If their customer service is so rude as to not ever say they are sorry for disturbing me when I've explained how rushed I am with my children, sorry that they are continuing to ask me for information I don't have to give them, then I would be crazy to ever have a Discover Card of my own. They even asked me to give the other person a message which was totally inappropriate. When all you do is answer your own home phone and people like that are on the other end it makes me not want to have a phone at all.

This was none of my business and the minute they heard I wasn't the card owner they should have said they were sorry and hung up. Discover Card according to my own experience with them has terrible, scary and aggressive customer service even to innocent people who don't own their card. The supervisor was just as bad, so all I know is I'm leaving Discover Card alone!

Credit card fraud

I cancel my membership with LA fitness, I was charge a monthly fee using my Discover Card. After I verified my cancellation with LA fitness I cancel my account with Discover and open up a new account with them with identity theft protection, because I had heard from other LA fitness members that even if you cancel your membership LA fitness with still try to bill you. I now have a new account with Discover. On the 15th of December LA fitness billed my old account and Discover transferred the payment to the new account plus they provided LA fitness with my new account number so that they can continue to bill me monthly on a membership they know I cancel.

I even told Discover people that I had cancel my membership with LA fitness before I cancel my old account, because they ask me if I had any monthly fees with any creditors, they said that any activities to my old account will not affect my new account because the old account is now close. When I received my protection report of any activities happening on my credit report, there was no reports of LA fitness making any attempts to charge my account. When I thought that everything was safe I call Discover to have the identity theft protection remove, and to let me know what my balance was on my account.

My balance was high even after I made my last payment, I always pay more than the minimal payment. I ask them why was my balance high after I made a payment, and they said that LA fitness charge me for my monthly membership fees, and they transferred everything to my new account. I told them that I cancel my membership with LA fitness, and they said that they will continue to let LA fitness charge my account until I can prove to them that I cancel with LA fitness, so I told them to just cancel my account out all together because this transaction is between me and LA fitness, and not Discover.

People do not do business with Discover Card. They will let creditors charge your account even if you have Identity theft protection, they will lie to you about what's going on on your account just to continue to get money out of you. They said that they will dispute the charges with LA fitness but I am still liable for the monthly payments, by LA fitness until we can get this settle. It's no use, it is best to just cancel out the account all together. I never heard of this - have anybody else had this problem with a credit card company before?

Irresponsible and Deceitful

I have had a Discover Card for over 9 years. In this 9-year time period I had always made my payments on time. My first issue with Discover happened this May when I was notified by letter that my interest rates would increase from 13% to 17%. I called customer service and they basically were defensive about it citing they had to be "competitive" and my response was "yeah you have to be competitive after all you are borrowing money from the FED at a 0% rate and you jack up my rate by 17%". That is exactly what is happening here.

Nevertheless against my better judgment I figured I would simply pay it off every month due to the cash back rewards since I was planning to use this card's benefits when paying wedding planning expenses. The logic behind it was if I was going to have to shell out a lot of money anyway I might as well take advantage of the opportunity to get cash back. Enter an unexpected expense and a trip cross country. For the first time ever I had to schedule an online payment from my new bank. I had scheduled my payment 6 days in advance of the due date and provided a routing number provided in my checkbook.

Discover listed my payment as paid for 4 days, but I noticed the day past the payment date, no funds were withdrawn from my checking account. So I called them up. The representative I talked to on the 9th of August assured me it was just my bank that was late in posting the funds and everything was fine. The very next day they posted that my bank had not paid. They charged me a $35 returned payment fee. They charged me a $19 late payment fee AND jacked up my rate to almost 25%.

I called my bank and asked them why the payment did not go through. My bank said that they had different electronic routing numbers, but that Discover Card should have already had the electronic routing number associated with my checking account in their system. So basically Discover uses any excuse to nickel and dime their customers. Needless to say after this fiasco, I am closing the account for good. There are plenty of other credit cards out there that will not pull this kind of stuff. I caution anyone applying for this card to look elsewhere.
