DETROIT, MICHIGAN -- Customer Relations Manager,

As a frequent user of your company, I feel obligated to share with you my experience.

I just want to say how disappointed I am in with the Discover Card. Ever since I received my card, I've had non-stop phone calls harassing me to buy into additional services and features. They call at night, on the weekends... constantly.

To help keep me as a potential future customer, I would like the following:

Stop calling and get better business practices!

At the very least I would like a response from your company regarding this incident.

I totally agree with you, I changed my phone number to stop that kind of harassment. Discover has one of the highest interest rates around, so who can afford any thing else thru them. I am just trying to pay mine off, and get rid of them.

the other night they called me at 10 minutes till 9- i told them I am not interested unless they send me these itnerest rates in writing- i hung up and they actually tried to call back and beg some more. they have the worst rates and will ask what rate your present company gives- then suddenly they can match it? why didnt I gety 1.9 offered in the first place? they have became so sleazy

If you receive any calls... to take an application for a discover card or for any products or services on your current discover card there is 2 ways of going about it... you can call their customer service at 1-800-347-2683 if you are reciving inviatations either by mail or phone calls for a discover card you can call the number above and request to be added to a non-solicitation list... if you have an account currently when you call customer service with the above number you can ask not to receive (special give-aways... checks... or product solicitation) for phone calls i would suggest to contact the credit card company directly... most calls that go out are from telemarketing agencys that creditors employ to sell products or services so you need to go directly to the sorce... i hope this helps.

Discover Charged My Account Without Permission

I had a auto ship set up with a company, that's another complaint, but Discover had my account set up for an auto ship. So I'm having trouble cancelling the auto ship. So, I canceled the card number and have a new acct. number set with Discover. this is at least six before the next $277. Auto ship is to be sent out, all good right, no acct. number no auto ship.

I heard from Discover in about 10 days of getting my new number, with a letter in the mail saying that I will need to contact any companies that I my have automatic payments or companies that I may have an auto ship set up with. It said, so as long as I do not give this company(Visalus) my new account number there will be no more $277 auto ship because they're not going to send it out without being paid first. But Discover let them charge to my new acct. number without my permission.

So, the product comes, Discover charges me, I send this product back the next day un-opened, but after three months of investigation by brilliant people at Discover, they say the shipment was justified and I owe the Visalus company $277.for something that should never have been charged to my acct. Plus, I sent the product back un-opened, and yes I will cancel my Discover card, as much as these people say they care, they really don't.

It Does Not Pay to Deal With Discover

Please be aware of the ill-practices of Discover. They are nothing but crooks disguised as a reputable company. I dealt with breast cancer last year and they put me in a six month program @ 3.99% and I agreed to have the amount taken directly out of my checking account.

What they did not tell me was that it was only a six month program, so when the 7th month came and they money was not taken I called them. They told me my account was past due and my interested rate jumped to about 18%. I have been unable to get any cooperation from them in terms of decreasing my interest rate.

I pay more than my minimal payment every month and I have been unable to make a dent in the balance. They are rude and uncaring. Please do us all a favor and don't do business with them and tell everyone you know the truth about Discover, they are nothing but crooks.

Probably, what Discover did was not crooked and was completely acceptable, according to the terms of your credit card agreement with them.

But that doesn't make it smart because people know what is fair and reasonable. People also have better things to do than read all the fine print in those credit card agreements that they weren't given until after they applied for their cards and got them activated in the first place.

I dropped Discover card because they kept calling me to offer all kinds of balance transfer deals and special rate gimmicks with who knows what kinds of strings attached. But when I had a need for some short-term financing and called them, they couldn't be bothered.

It's not a good company to do business with.

It sounds to me like Discover did you a favor if they only charged you 3.99% for 6 months. Where can you get that? Unfortunately, your situation hasn't allowed you to "get ahead" of your debt. I try to not have any balances carrried over each month. I hate paying anything more than 6%.

Been a member since 1993 - Just informed that rate jumping to 27.9%. Never late. Discover is hateful! Transfer you balance and cut up your cards. Someone tried to warn me, and I didn't listen... big mistake. But I did have $3.57 cashback available. Are you kidding me?

Discover Card - Disgraceful!

After 22 years with Discover Card, NEVER a late payment, they suddenly decided we were a "high risk" and dropped our credit line over eleven thousand dollars. And WHY did they do this? Because we actually began using the card more often due to a temporary zero interest rate offer. Now, get this: Discover crushed our credit line because we actually did what they, and all credit card companies, want their customers to do - WE USED THEIR CARD! But in addition to this cardinal sin, we opted to make minimum payments while the interest was at zero percent, thus freeing up a little money for other things rather than paying off a debt of interest free money. This is a common money management scheme. We thought we were doing the right thing.

So, now the account person we spoke to says we'll have to RE-APPLY for our previous credit amount to be reinstated. That's an insult. What have we done to deserve this disgraceful service? I mean, other than paying Discover Card in full and on time for over two decades. What more do they expect?

It is disgraceful. You're doing everything that a credit card company hates. Yes, they want you to use the card, but they don't want you to pay it off every month. They want you to take advantage of the 0% financing, but they want you to miss a payment or be late with a payment so they can charge you interest anyway, or at least carry over a balance once the 0% period ends.

Good for you for having such a good handle on your finances. Banks and credit cards are doing anything they can to make money these days, at the expense of the customer.

It appears that JusttheFaxx works for the credit cards and banks of America because no matter what the complaint is about, the banks and credit card companies are ALWAYS right in whatever they do. He/she seems to be pushing what ever agenda the banks and credit card companies are doing at any given time. "it's their credit card...they can do whatever they want" is his/her basic statement. Pay with cash and money orders, that's my motto.

Charlie, Justthefaxz does not work for a CC company. If you read other reviews, a lot of people on here are having similar problems with credit card companies. You are not the only one. Don't blame it on Discover, blame it on the economy. Before the recession, banks were loaning aout million and millions of dollars and not even taking a glance at the application. Now banks are realizing all the debt that they have out, and trying to fix it. It means that they are cutting back credit lines on MANY people. Its not just you. Its the sign of the times.

Discover Card is the worst card ever please don't get one

CAROL STREAM, ILLINOIS -- I have a discover card and I have only been late on my payment once this year and they called me at work which is stupid because they charge almost a $40.00 late fee and I really don't know how they acquired my work number. I told them to call my cell phone and take my work number out of their system. They said they have but I don't trust them. Then they tried to make me feel like crap by acting like I was struggling with my payments which isn't the case at all and tried to get me on automatic payments. My credit score is 760 and I am not a credit risk. Now they raised my interest rate to almost 24% and won't lower it unless I make payments automtically for one year and then they will review interest rate. I've had all kinds of credit cards in the last 30 years and Discover is absolutly the worst. They call and hound you at work; home anywhere and basically treat you like crap. They won't work with you they just want to put the nails to you. It is all about them and they are selfish.

If you are not having trouble with your payments, why are they hounding you at work and home then? Make the payment, problem solved. Unless you can add to this story, I can't see why we should not get a Discover account based on your information that they call when they aren't paid on time. That's not going to change with any other lender.

I'm with you bcd, Discover has been a great card for me for 20+ years...no problem at all. It does seem very unfair that the OP misses a payment, then goes online to bash Discover because they would like their money.

The way you feel about Discover is how I feel about Capital One. They are SO greedy and won't do anything nice for me and act like they don't appreciate my business.

Try calling Discover between 8am and 5pm and ask to lower your APR. Don't give up after one call. It takes 5-8 calls sometimes before your request gets granted.

About getting called at work..I actually would appreciate getting called if I am late on a payment, even at work, because most likely I don't know it is late. Any reminders that will prevent me from being late a whole 30 days are a good thing in my book.

Discover gives you a contract to read, so you clearly know what will happen if you, either go late, or go over the limit. It shouldn't be a surprise.

Unethical Practices when Cancelling Card

FREMONT, CALIFORNIA -- When I attempted to cancel my Discover Card, the support center handed me over to a special account services where they try to retain you as a customer. They offered me a 40$ gas rebate. I thought it was a great deal. Later I used the card, and found that I really did not get such a credit to stay on board. They told me that they don't provide such deals. In essence, they felt I was a liar. I wanted to give them one last chance, but clearly they wanted me to do a few more charges. I felt completely misled. Discover Card is using fraudulent tactics to keep people on board. A company which is not honest will be their downfall.

If you want to cancel your card, you should be allowed to do it. I have been cancelling cards with other companies with no problem. Discover is the only company with a special division whose focus is to deter consumers from cancelling their cards. Do not listen to those people they lie and swindle their way with false promises to maintain customers. They do not realize that a good service and honesty are the keys to retaining customers. Trust me it be a better world when this company disappears.

I have never had any issues with my Discover card over the years. Although the only contact I ever have with them is when they call me to verify large purchases or potential fraud purchases. This feature I find comforting, knowing they are monitoring such activities. If I ever do cancel, I will be sure to watch out for the phone card credit ploy. Thanks.

Just FYI, ALL credit card companies have a retention department. It's cheaper to throw some $$ at an existing customer (especially a good customer) than it is to find a new one.

I am sorry you feel this way. I am an employee in the department of which you speak of. Infact, I am a supervisor in the Phoenix call center. We do offer the incentive that you were told about ( $40 Cash Back Bonus...not specifically gas) and yes, we do value everysinge one of our cardmembers. Without you, where would we be? Of course we don't want to lose you...right? I will let you know that our goal is not to deter you form doing something that you made your mind up to do... but to educate you on the benefits of our card that make us stand out from the competition. It is our theory that if you knew what we know about the card, that you wouldn't even want to go elsewhere. We understand that that is not always the case, but statistically after speaking with us, our cardmembers use their card's even more than they ever did before. Infact, Discover is the only card in the Industry that can make that claim. Customers of other companies tend to have more negative feelings toward their company after speaking to a rep, even if it's for a simple question. That means that if you are a big wig of one of the other companie...you want to keep your customers from talking to your reps...or train them to be more like Discover Reps. :^) My point here is this: Our NUMBER ONE PRIORITY in the Retention department is to leave the customer with a positive impression of the company period. We thrive on honesty...it's what sets us apart from everyone else! There is nothing fraudulent in what we do... sometimes it might seem too good to be true, but we are just that good! I challenge you to put us to the test. If your account has been closed less than 90 days, you may speak with a rep. in my dept. again. We are available 24/7 ( first company to offer that) and will answer your call within 60 seconds ( only company to gurantee that). You will not be let down. (1-800-Discover...1-800-347-2683)

Beware of Discover Student Loans

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Beware of Discover Bank Student Loans. When you apply for and obtain the loan your loan will almost immediately be sold off to Great Lakes Bank and then the trouble begins. As Great Lakes mishandles your paperwork, in my case sending me documents in mail initially then suddenly, without my knowledge, they start sending docs to a 1997 address. This older address I had never used on any form or given to them. Then, without my knowledge they take a student loan currently in deferment several years before student graduation and put it into repayment mode. Then sending items to the 13 year old address they get no response and then wreak havoc on your credit report. When you finally discover what they did you call them and they blame Discover Bank saying they sent them the wrong address! When you call Discover Bank they blame Great Lakes saying they can't be responsible! Neither will take responsibility and you get nowhere. Horrible service, rude on the phone, avoid, avoid, avoid!

When my husband went back to school to finish his degree 2 years ago, we went through the same bank that held his first set of loans (Citi). After he finished school, the loans from his second go-round in school were sold off to the Dept of education which turned them over for management to GreatLakes. To be perfectly honest, I haven't had any trouble with them, but then I do everything electronically.

Loan shark interest rates

Well Discover card has reached a new low. We have been their customer for over 20 years and always have had a great credit rating and still do. Now because of a payment that was a few days late..our interest rate climbed up to 26%. We called them and have been informed they cannot lower this interest rate until we have 6 months of on time payments which will be next month. These loan sharks have now lost our business for life. You would think they would appreciate paying customers with good credit ratings.

You agreed to the terms that allow them to do this. That rule of going back to the original interest rate after 6 months was a new law signed by President Obama. Remember a few days or a few hours, late is late.

As someone posted in response to a substantially similar post some months ago, credit is a privilege, not a right. Your standing as a good customer is only as good as your last payment, which you admit was late. You agreed to those policies when you signed up, and the Usurper Obama gave you a goodie, that does not absolve you of making late payments. You have six months to restore your credit and redeem yourself as a customer in good standing. I wish you luck. Good credit is more than making your payments, it includes paying them on time, every time.

I agree with the writer of this action by Discover card to not show more flexibility. Yes, they have the right to do it, and the card-holder did agree to the terms....but you either agree to all of the terms or you don't get the card.....and a long-standing card-holder with excellent payment history should have earned a different response than someone who has been a card-holder for years or has a spotty payment history. Credit card companies show no loyalty to customers, so customers should do the same.....shop around at a site like bankrate.com and dump them.

Discover has the flexibility to decide not to alter the terms in the favor of the card-holder, but chose not to.....not a way to build brand-loyalty.....

As to the new law that President Obama signed, remember it was an attempt to prevent some of the more outlandish abuses by the banks, but the lobbyists have done well to limit the damage to the bottom line at the expense of the everyday consumer. They have had time to change/raise the interest rate terms so they can "cut their losses" incurred by the new regulations.

Our Citibank MasterCard just raised the variable rate on our Shell card to over 20%. They have a right to do it and we have agreed to the new terms....but we have responding by finding a new card with a variable rate of about 14% with better cash-back terms. We had used the Shell card extensively on a monthly basis to Citibank's advantage, as they earn a service fee on each transaction even though we paid the card in full on time. Now they will earn nothing. Their action, my response....

I just talked to Discover Card in Delaware. We were 2 days late on our payment last month because they moved our due date from the 10th of the month to the 6th. Now understand, we do not have a large balance, about $500. We were notified that our interest rate has been raised to prime plus 27.99%. We immediately notified them that we would not accept this change and they could cancel the card. We paid off the balance except for a $12 disputed item.

Prime plus 27.99% should be against the law. Everyone I have talked to has agreed to cancel their Discover Card. Any company that would charge anyone that interest rate should be put out of business, that is corporate greed at its worst.

I hope everyone takes a stand and cancels their Discover Card.

Based on responses, you missed the point. I screwed up by not noticing the change in due dates, a given. Any company that would charge anyone prime plus 27.99% is out of control and should be avoided by everyone. To charge that interest rate should be criminal, besides the $39 late fee.

I think most credit card companies are raising the interest rates while they can. When you got your bill either online or via paper--did you not look at the due date? Most companies send the bills way in advance of the due date.

Alot of credit card companies play the "change the due date" game. I think it is an awful practice that does no one any good but the card issuer to extort money.

When you miss the due date, you put yourself in a position to be hurt (although I agree that the earlier date should be highlighted more).

I would suggest you immediately go out and buy something on the card. Once I ordered a magazine on-line (I know, I know) and a problem arose. It was the only thing on this credit card. I disputed and hence did not have to pay it. Yet, each month I received a bill saying there was a minimum due. I didn't have to pay, but over the next 2 months I got repeat billings and late fees. This was finally all cleared up,late fees dropped, etc., but I realized it would have been simpler to buy something else on the card, make the minimum payment due, and when the dispute was settled, pay it off then.

A lot of credit card companies have moved from a model of a fixed due date each month to a model of a payment being due every 'x' number of days. That has a benefit to both parties of being able to budget better, but for the payor it creates the burden of checking ehach month to see what the exact due date is.

You may find that if you consider your due date to be ten days earlier than the old system, it will always give you enough buffer to get your payment there on time. The date is going to creep though, so keep an eye on it.

I do agree that Prime plus 27.99% is ridiculous, and kudos to the OP for paying the card off. Kudos, also, for taking responsibility for the late payment, and not trying to blame it on the credit card company, although the practice of changing due dates is also ridiculous.

Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish....

I too was a loyal Discover Card user until recently. Back in Feb. 2009 I called Discover up and requested a lower interest rate. I cannot remember my original rate but my friend had a lower rate on his Discover Card and I have a good repayment history with them so I thought I would ask. My wish was granted, it was lowered to 13.49%, Not awesome but better than I had before. Then about 6 weeks later I received a letter from Discover that my rate was going to increase to 19.99% and unless I closed my account this was just how it was going to be. Their reason was the current economy and their increases in the cost of doing business. I reviewed my records and thought this must be a mistake, I have never been late or missed a payment and I used my card frequently, so I called them up. I asked the representative how doing this could be good for their business because I will be closing my account and I would imagine chasing the good customers away would not improve their profitability.

I got some canned response and she did not even try and get me to change my mind, or talk to a supervisor to see if they could reconsider, nothing. It was very clear to me that this is not the type of company I care to give my business to so I promptly wrote a letter to them requesting they close my account and I transferred my balance to another credit card.

I realize I may have just hurt my credit score by doing that but I was angry and not willing to put up with their bullying ways. Consumers need to fight back, those of us that still have a home and a decent credit score have to fight even harder today to keep it. I am tired of our government and our creditors trying to force us to pay for the mistakes of others. Spread the word, save your friends and relatives from predatory companies.

Yes, you have probably hurt your credit score. It might have been better to keep the card and charge a few small items and paid it off each month. Do you generally just pay the minimum or do you pay more?

Most credit card companies these days are raising interest rates while they can.

Hi BEJ. I usually pay far more than the minimum and when I can I pay the balance in full. I transferred the balance I had on the Discover card to my Chase credit card and they offered me zero percent for 12 mos. which is more than enough time to pay off the balance so in the short term I'm better off. So far Discover is the only one to do this to me. I have since closing my account, gotten an offer to transfer balances to my Discover Card, I'm wondering if it was actually closed, hmm??

Well I received another statement for interest charges after paying my balance in full early and sending a letter requesting they close my account. I know from reading other comments here that this is something I probably unknowingly agred to. This just doesn't seem right

When did you send the letter? The mail is not immediate you know. Why don't you call and simply ask..."Is my account open or closed?" Its not like they are hard to get a hold of.
