Robbed Me Blind...Literally
Posted by Jewlz68 on 03/24/2009
30102, GEORGIA -- I had an in home visit from one of their sales people and it was great. She was helpful and the price was really good. I scheduled the installation and was very excited about getting fresh new carpet for my house. The installers came on time. The crew manager was great, he answered all of my questions and was generally very friendly. He had 2 Hispanic guys working with him. They spoke no English. They finished in 3.5 hours and I was so excited. The carpet looked great. I was thoroughly satisfied. I really thought I would get to go out onto the internet and write a good review of the company. That is, until I started unpacking my stuff that I boxed up to get out of the way.
I unpacked a box and thought that there was some CD's and a DVD missing, but I wasn't sure. That prompted me to check my jewelry box that was in a box under stuff in the bathroom. When I did I was shocked to find 6 rings missing from my jewelry box. One of which was my grandmother's wedding rings (she passed away last Feb and that's all I have left of her). Those rings were on a gold chain. The chain was snapped and the rings gone. I was so upset, I was literally devastated. I immediately called the crew manager that was at my house and told him that I had belongings missing. He was able to stop his crew. One of the men was working with him for the very first day ever. This guy handed over 2 of my rings, but nothing else.
By that time I had contacted the local police and they were at my house. Long story short, what ended up happening was the crew manager and his wife came all the way back here from the warehouse in rush hour traffic to give a statement with me to the police. It was really great of him to do that and he didn't have to do anything.
If that wasn't bad enough, Empire was notified also and they told me that someone would call me in 24hrs. They should have made that a priority. The lady called me the next day got information and said she would call back. She took 4 hours to do so. When she called back (after 2 msgs from me)she gave me the B. S. line of "we are going to cooperate with the police". When I asked what the company was going to do for me, she repeated that line FREAKING PARROT! She wouldn't explain anything.
I spoke with the Installation Manager here in Atlanta and he basically told me that b/c legal is involved they can't discuss it with me. They aren't doing anything to resolve the fact that I paid $1800 to be robbed!
This could happen to anyone with any company. My point is that EMPIRE has no customer service to speak of. I wish I had gone with someone else even if I had to pay more money. Beware of empire.

I'm glad you were able to recover something and the guy admitted to the theft. Any coroporate entity dealing with police and legal issues won't comment much due to legalities. Your way ahead of most people in similar situations. Empire generally hires employees as installers and as such should be bonded and licensced. The sales people aren't employees. Do a google search for Empire today installers for job openings and you can see a list of their requirements. There clearly is liablility on their part.

So sorry I used them
Posted by Apt owner on 12/07/2010
I have an apt building and a professional friend told me how satisfied the owners of a bldg she managed were with a change to Pergo flooring. When I needed to replace carpeting I chose Empire because of the longevity of their product and the knowledge and professionalism of the salesman.
The installation went smoothly and the look was high quality. 14 months later my very-careful tenant noticed 1 plank had bubbling, which looked like it was de-laminating.

I called the sales person, who was informative, but referred me to the general 800 number. I have had 4 calls from them-all non-productive and ignoring whatever I said. The last girl, Esther, called to reiterate wrong information (the 2nd time). I asked for a supervisor and she hung up on me. When I called the 800 number, a nice also-young girl said the minimum "I'm sorry" and tried to get a supervisor to the phone. She said he finally walked up to her but wouldn't pick up the phone. She also couldn't find Esther.

I spent twice as much $ thinking this product would be better quality and would last, and the company had been around for a long time. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE.

You can get all types of laminates. Empire is simply one of the most expensive retailers in the country. Bubbling indicates moisture most of the time. If its confinied to single board then any installer could do a board replacement. Laminate should be way cheaper than carpet from any other dealer.

That's not the fault of empire. That's the issue of the product.
Posted by face it on 2012-01-23:
I can not say 100% for sure where there product is made? I can say with out a doubt that there products have there name (Empire) printed on the boxes. Which leads one to believe they produce there own materials. I can also tell you with 100% accuracy that there material is among the lowest quality I have ever worked with in my 24 years of installing hard surface flooring.

Outrageous Sales Pitch and Bully Tactics
Posted by Idbarton on 11/22/2010
We knew we were in trouble as soon as we all sat down because we were forced to get a history lesson on Empire when all we wanted was a carpet and install quote. We were held prisoner in our own home (unless we wanted to be rude) while he spewed his sales pitch, and spew he did, sending spittle into the air. When the first words out of your mouth are show casing all your awards we became suspicious. Why is this necessary? Doesn't your workmanship speak for itself? We found out later why because he gave us this outrageous quote of $3100 for ~ 350 sq ft of room, next quote was what Empire could provide it for at $2100 but if we signed TONIGHT, we could get it for ~$1300.By producing the first quote you think you are getting the deal of a life time, but the caveat is that you HAVE to sign a contract that night or else the deal is off the table. When we did not fold to his sales pressure he got mad and defensive claiming he would not be back as it costs $350 for him to even come out. He tried to guilt us into signing by saying Empire would not do business with us otherwise. What a awful sales approach. I work for a sales oriented company and our guys cold call all the time. It is the nature of the business and if we ever tried to bully a customer into buying from us we would never get through the front door again. Your deal or no deal tactic will not work in this economy. Bully sales tactics don't work. He also claimed the commercials do not say anything is free "pay for this room and got this room and this room for free" is not what they say. Really? I am complaining here, to them and to Better Business Bureau.

Posted by GoLocalSmallBusiness on 2010-12-21:
I had the same experience. I got the award showcase and the angry, defensive behavior when I told him I wouldn't give him a deposit. I wish I could rally all of my friends to waste this guys time and request estimates all in the same week only to tell him "No" just to really give this guy a reason to be angry and to reconsider who he works for. Although I'd never put my friends through what we went through in dealing with this guy. These are definitely sales tactics that are taught as this is the third post that resembles what we went through.

Worst mistake ever made, Huntersville NC
Posted by Jimmckeeson on 06/14/2010
I fell for the add of 60%off carpet. The salesman was good I will give him that. He played a guy who was having to sell carpet in a down economy. He opened up his books and made us feel that he was selling it to us at the lowest profit margin available 6%. Being naive we decided to go with Empire spending $3500. Then the lies began. They were not able to provide me with the specs on the carpet, found out it was polyester not nylon. They tried to string me along for the 3 days so that I would not be able to cancel. Installed 2 rooms and brought the wrong color for the third. Continued to get run around. Carpet at Lowes and Home Depot much better quality 1/2 the price. I had them take up the carpet as I cancelled in the 3 day period. To do this you have to send copy of paper to Illinois. Not one person gave a crap after I signed the contract. RUN FROM THIS COMPANY. Should have listened to the countless negative reviews all over the internet.

I think that the company has changed since these comments were written. I just had the entire upstairs recarpeted (1,500 sq ft) and the hallway is now wood...they did the entire upstairs in one day and the price was acceptable to me as well. When last year I was shopping for new carpet their price at the big box store was comparable to my price. BUT....never accept their first price because they do have room to deal...I am extremely happy with both the sales rep, manager and installers.

Reduced quote
Posted by Junestwin on 02/23/2011
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA -- We had a sales representative come to our house he was very nice my first negative was when he started to bad mouth Home Depot and lows. I can't stand when a salesman bad mouths another company. Well anyway I let it slide thinking he was proud of empire. He measured and we looked at samples. I was not going to make a decision that day anyway - I just don't make decision that quick. Well when we got our quote it was over $8000 for about 2200 sq feet that was with the buy 1room get the rest free. When I told him my quote from Home Depot was approx. $6000 he immediately dropped his price to $6500 I said I wanted to find my Home Depot quote to be sure he started pressuring me to buy - that he could have it installed on Monday today way Saturday. I told him I still needed to pack up my house - we had 2 floods in our house and it was basically a mess I wanted to go through everything myself to discard what I didn't want anymore. He became upset at that point but was still pleasant. But I was assured when I made my appointment that I would not have to make a decision on the spot. We decided we would call empire back if we wanted to use them. Still have not decided, but I figured the price would be a whole lot better than what they quoted. I don't think they actually give you the deal they advertise on TV. I expected the quote to be at least half of the Home Depot price.

I don't think Empire is known for having low prices. The specials they advertise are nothing more than advertising gimmicks. They try to get you to pay the most you are willing to pay. The more you pay, the more the salesman gets. You should do some checking on the internet. There seems to be a lot of complaints about Empire, their sales tactics and their carpet and installations. You should get an estimate for a local carpet store in your area to see how it compares with the ones you already have. Another thing you should do is check with anyone you know who might have gotten carpet recently for recommendations.
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-02-23:
I would never let an Empire salesman in my house based on the consistent complaints I've seen here. I don't like the way they turn on people and even bully and threaten customers when they won't make a decision on the spot. Even if Empire had the cheapest price, I wouldn't get involved with people like that?
Posted by dan gordon on 2011-02-23:
I worked for Mohawk carpet and have friends that have worked for Empire. One of the highest markups in the industry. What puzzles me is they sucked you in with your buying one room and then, gee, your whole house is free and you actually believed that. So the one room in $8000???? Home Depot marks up their labor and uses subcontractors and is not know to be the lowest. You should try an inependent carpet store to compare. Empire carries a very small variety of carpet compared to most any store. Why do customers believe any of their ads?? Please do a little more homework and you should save $$$
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-02-23:
Dan, I think one of the reasons people tend to believe the ads is because they've been around for such a long time. Also, nothing works better than the word 'free'. Of course, nothing is ever really free, but sometimes just the idea is enough to reel people in. Empire also gives the impression that they are cheaper, but as this OP and others have learned, that is not true.
Posted by ok4now on 2011-02-23:
It's amazing that these people are still in business considering the number of complaints and bad reviews. They advertise heavily and their sales staff are known for their pressure tactics. Sure they want to install the next day, so you don't have time to realize that you are being ripped off.

I recently used a local independent carpet dealer with fantastic results. It took two professional installers over six hours to tear out the old carpet, install new padding & carpet on six steps and the upstairs hallway. No they were not slow. They took their time to do the job right with a lot of custom work. Empire never would have given me this.
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-02-23:
We only use local people with storefronts for major home renovations. If something goes wrong, I want to be able to take care of it face to face and not chase after some elusive television or online entity. That's why I would never be tempted to hire a company like Empire.
Posted by dan gordon on 2011-02-23:
where I live they just started in the last 4 or 5 yrs. When I see their cpt samples at the mall its really basic styles. If you notice they only promote Shaw and some very less know cpt mills. How are they supposed to be cheaper when almost all carpet is pvt labeled so its almost impossible to compare apples and apple.s
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-02-23:
Good point, dan.
Posted by Anonymous on 2011-02-24:
True story: I had Empire in my house last Saturday for an estimate. Not my choice, I am not the homeowner. Straight up told the salesman to measure and give a quote based on one of their most inexpensive styles. He did as told and left. No bullying. No harassment. No threatening. Reading the reviews here, that is not what I expected at all. Yes, the estimate came in high, but, like I said - not my choice.
Posted by dan gordon on 2011-02-24:
since your not the decision maker I'm surprised they made the appt, but pressuring you to make a decision when your not the one buying the carpet is why they came and left so easily.
Posted by Anonymous on 2011-02-24:
Dan, that might be true if they knew that, but, they didn't.
Posted by jktshff1 on 2011-02-24:
As a capital equipment salesman, I run across this often. I never badmouth, just state facts.
I made a $250K sale one time simply because competition dropped their price to $225k. When the customer told me that, I explained that that was my best price, but it seemed that he was overpriced in the first place trying to make more money. He thought a minute, called the other supplier on speaker and explained that if he was willing to drop his pant 25k he was trying to screw him in the 1st place, other salesman was dumbfounded, and I got the order.

Empires hard wood floor is worthless
Posted by Interceptor911 on 07/06/2010
CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA -- Fell for the 3 rooms for the price of 1 sale. I specifically asked the sales person how easy it was to scratch the flooring and pointed out the medium sized dog in the rear yard. Sales guy assured me that it was very tough and that the dog would not damage the floor. My mother just recently had hard wood floors installed from another company and she has a dog and doesn't have a single scratch, so I figured he was being truthful. As soon as the installers leave and I bring my dog in for the night, the floor was scratched. I called the company to have it repaired and they told me that as a courtesy they would repair that area but that damage done by pets wasn't covered and that they wouldn't repair any more. I called the company and explained to them that their sales person assured me that this wouldn't be a problem and they tell me that hard wood floors are extremely easy to scratch. I am constantly having to patch small dents and holes in the floor with wood putty now. I dropped my flipping car keys the other day and it knocked a hole it it. I complained enough that I was able to get them to refund $1000 but that really wasn't enough. Now I'm stuck with a worthless floor that you can't walk across barefoot without damaging. NEVER AGAIN Empire. You will not get a dime of my money ever again.

the company repaired the floor even when it wasn't under warranty?

Posted by Venice09 on 2010-08-22:
But the salesman lied. He told the OP the floor was tough and wouldn't scratch easily. That turned out to be false. Based on this review, I wouldn't trust any representations made by Empire. I'm not impressed with the repair or the refund because the floor is not as represented.
Posted by PepperElf on 2010-08-22:
that's why i phrased it as a question - so the OP could verify the statement

Posted by ok4now on 2010-08-27:
I have heard many horror stories about Empire Carpet. Not a company that I would ever deal with. I'm surprised that they offered to repair a problem that clearly wasn't their fault. Hardwood floors are beautiful but they do scratch easily if abused. Clip the dog's nails.
Posted by Venice09 on 2010-08-28:
It's not just the dog. The OP dropped his keys and they put a whole in the floor. Sorry, but that's very poor quality. Real hardwood floors do not scratch that easily. The OP probably got what he paid for, but I don't think the salesman should have misrepresented the quality of the floor.
Posted by Anonymous on 2010-08-28:
Sounds like there is no finish on the wood, hence the scratches. Some types of wood dent easily and others (like oak) don't. The wood must be a soft one for the keys to have put a dent on the floor. I can easily see this happening with certain types of wood. Most of the engineered wood flooring is also just a thin veneer--and they can't even be refinished. You really have to do your homework when buying hardwood flooring. I do agree with Venice--very poor quality.
Posted by Janine on 2013-05-22:
I want to thank all the reviewers for Empire. We were thinking about calling them to re-carpet our house because of the "next day" installation. We probably wouldn't have used them if our salesperson was anything like the ones I've read here but now at least I won't even be wasting my time.

My Experience With Empire Carpet
Posted by Plumnoddin on 03/13/2009
LONG BEACH -- I just had Empire install some carpet. We are very satisfied with both, the installation and carpet.

However, I would never use them again nor would I recommend them to anyone. The reason I say this is we called because they were offering 60% off. When we picked out the carpet we wanted, the guy gives us the price, and it was way way higher than the other quotes we received. When I asked if the price included the 60% off, he tells me that discount only applies to a few select carpets, and of coarse the one we selected was not one of them. So I said OK thanks for your time but your not even in the ballpark. That's when he calls his manager, and gets special permission to lower the price, by over half. That tells me if I didn't ask about the discount, they would have happily gouged me.

It gets worse from there. After thinking about it, we called him back and say OK, let do it. He comes back to the house and after filling out all the paperwork asks for payment in full. So I say, what do you mean payment in full? You haven't installed the carpet yet. He says that's just how they do it. So I tell him forget it then. I'm not paying you in full before the work is done. I just had $10,000 worth of windows replaced in my house, and they didn't ask for payment in full. I'll give you half now and the other half after it's installed, otherwise, have a nice day. Low and behold, his manager gives special permission to pay half now and the balance after the installation is complete.

The lack of trust was unbelievable. He actually sat in my dinning room calling his office so they could run some kind of check approval, making it very clear to me that they did not trust me to write them a valid check, yet I was supposed to trust them and pay it all in full before the installation.

I think I got lucky. Most of the time if a company wants to be paid in full BEFORE the work is done, they do very very poor quality work, and know they won't get paid after, so they need to get it up front.

Like I said earlier, I do not recommend using Empire for the simple fact that they were not straight up with me from the beginning.

We used Empire a few years back when we were trying to sell our home. They did a good job, and the carpet was OKAY, nothing special. I had no complaints...

I was comforted by the fact that the installers worked for Empires, versus going with Home Depot where the installers are just random contractors...
Posted by Alain on 2009-03-13:
Thought about Empire for some new carpet work. I'll look at others, too. Wouldn't use Home Depot or Lowe's for any flooring (haven't heard anything good about their service).
Posted by Ponie on 2009-03-13:
My Sis had her tri-level completely carpeted by them about three years ago. According to her, they were lower than other carpeting places. She said they were efficient, coming out when promised, finishing when promised. A couple of weeks later she called about a couple picky-picky things she wanted corrected. They came out and fixed them to her satisfaction without question. She's referred a couple of customers to them. It may be a regional thing. The market is very competive in the DC area where she lives.

Seemed like a good idea .... I was wrong
Posted by on 01/31/2011
I'll start by saying that even though I read all the reviews, I just had a morbid sense of humor and wanted to see first hand just how sketchy Empire was.

I filled out the online in-home estimate request and then noticed somewhere that it stated if you weren't spending at least $750.00 that they would not come out so I emailed a cancellation request (only needed 20 sq. yards of carpet). Not only did they send me the cancellation confirmation, but right behind it, they rescheduled my appointment again. When I called, I had to jump through hoops to actually speak to a human being, explained my situation, and the woman stated that no job was too small and that they would be here today, Monday, January 31.

My sales guy called and was super nice, he was close to my home so he was coming an hour early if that was ok. Sure, no problem. Now I have already spoken with Lowes, Home Depot and Molyneaux over the weekend and each provided a rough quote of around $540.00 - $560.00. So I figured hey, Empire says they save you money, why not let them come in for an estimate.

Well, my salesman arrived happy as a child on Christmas morning. I quickly escorted him to the small bedroom and hallway that I wanted to have carpeted and explained what I have explained above. Suddenly, this kind old man became so enraged that he literally turned 4 shades of red and began shaking. He told me that unlike these stores, he only installs quality product. I told him that I was looking at Stainmaster carpet with upgraded pad and I thought that was quality. He then threw his metal briefcase on the floor and fumbled his phone out of his pocket to call "his boss" and told me that I had to tell them I canceled my appointment. When he put me on the phone, I told them that no, I didn't cancel, I was told that 20 sq yards of carpet would be no less than $900.00 and that I was going with another quote, he ripped the phone away from me, hung it up, called me an a$$hole and dropped his phone. At this point, I felt I was under attack. I kicked his phone towards the door, grabbed it, threw it out into the snow and politely told the old man that he was about to meet Jesus unless he left this moment.

I won't make this mistake again, and I hope this helps you avoid it as well. It was good for a Monday laugh, but that's about it.

Thanks all :)

I'm gonna give the OP the benefit of the doubt on this one because I can see this happening. Opps sorry...let me rephrase my last comment.

Wow OP! If I had been treated in such a manner, I would have first called 911, and I would also contact an attorney and consider filing suit against Empire...their representative obviously threatened you and you could have been seriously harmed not just physically, but the language that was used had to have also caused you mental anguish. Best of luck..do let us know if you decide to do anything about this and thank you very much for the warning, I shall never contact Empire when I'm bored and looking for a good laugh.

My favorite quote after a salesman has finished their spiel. "I can't wait to give this quote to the landlord"

Usually followed by a "you are not the homeowner?"

Then followed by a quick exit.
Posted by dan gordon on 2011-01-31:
since you read the prior reviews then you know that Empire will say this was not a salesperson but an independent contractor working for them. For fun I would have asked about the 'free install' or since that wasn't enough carpet could you just pay for one room and get two more free like the tv ad says? It wouldn't have hurt to try..
Posted by Anonymous on 2011-01-31:
Exactly JC. Like my aunt Lillian was fond of saying, "Look before you leap a gift horse drinking water with it's mouth". Now I didn't much 'get it' back then but then again I was just a kid and I still had plenty of growing up to do.
Posted by PepperElf on 2011-01-31:
Wait... you ordered the carpet just to see how they were... and you canceled... but you still agreed to have them look at your home?

Maybe I'm reading this wrong but it sounds like you were leading them on, with the intent of laughing at them over it.

In light of that, I cannot agree with you over the company's quality. Not if you were purposefully screwing with them just to play mind games.
Posted by spiderman2 on 2011-01-31:
Thats how I read it Pepper. I have better things to do with my time that screw around with people for giggles and put myself in a sitaution that could potentially be dangerous, but that is just me (and probably you too!)

I'm not sure this was done just for fun. I got the impression the OP might have purchased the carpet from Empire if the quote was in the range of the other quotes, but it wasn't even close.

I fail to see any humor in this entire scenario. Kicking the phone and throwing it outside was a risky thing to do. Who knows what the salesman was capable of doing in return? Not something I would want to find out. I would have just politely asked him to leave and locked the door behind him.

I am so glad that I decided to look up "Empire complaints" because everytime I see the commercial I think "what a great deal! We should call them." My husband on the other hand has always told me they will rip you off. He was right. Thanks for all the postings we will NOT becalling them today or any other day.

Scammin' salesmen
Posted by Needtoknow on 07/20/2009
We had Empire come for a quote after hearing "buy one room, get two free" 1) the salesmen was seemingly hungover, left his cigarette in our driveway and blew smoke into our non-smoking home 2) he brought in samples of what he thought I should look at, not what I wanted, got huffy and then told me he "would have to go lug in other samples" that what he had was "just as good"! 3) wouldn't give us a written quote unless we signed a sales contract right then and there!! gave us a "general estimate" but wouldn't put it in writing 4) told us he never heard of their "buy one get two ad" which I proceeded to show him online - he said that was an online special, I told him I requested the quote/visit online! 5)he said no one would do a written quote because the industry was so competitive (another company had already given us one!!) This was all such an unprofessional, terrible experience.

I tried to contact a manager after he left to find out if there was in fact such a special, there WAS and someone was supposed to call me back, but no one ever did. I wrote them a tactful letter explaining the problem-no response. Did I mention the salesmen was insulting, talking to us as if we were stupid, smelled like cigarettes so bad we couldn't sit near him AND he had GAS so terrible we had to spray the room twice after he left?!

I hope you went with another company. No written quote? It seems like he thought you would actually believe that.

Buyer Beware!!!!!
Posted by Victoriousliving on 12/15/2010
This company will schedule your free consultation immediately. However, the installer called 5 times to to confirm that he was coming. He came finally 45 mins. late. my scheduled appointment 11-1pm. My husband scheduled an installation for the following week but after reading the reviews and the outrageous pricing!!! I called customer service to cancel I was transferred to 3 Different People with the pressure to keep the appt. They even offered a $100.00 price deduction to help me. (impressive). The sales representative proceeded to tell me that I scheduled the free appt. (i guess this was a guilt trip he wanted me to take) and He was only trying to Help me.

I will never use them. BUYER BEWARE

I couldn't tell if your complaining about the salesman or the installation. It sounded like you ordered carpet from them. If you did then you need to document your cancellation in writing not by phone.

I'm no fan of Empire Carpet but this sounds like buyers remorse. This complaint seems a little sketchy to me. I'm assuming you paid some money to them otherwise they would not schedule an installation. I hope you get your money back without any problem.
