Do Not Buy GE Appliances

We paid $6800 for a GE Profile refrigerator in 2006 and have had nothing but problems with the auto-close door. GE repair people have been out numerous times to fix as the hinge was not strong enough to support the door (their analysis). Finally, GE replaced the door but it is too long for the unit (about 1/8th of an inch on top and bottom). We spoke with a supervisor who opened a case file and then called us back and offered to replace the unit with a comparable unit that came out on March 12th. We accepted.

Now, GE is not going to do that unless we pay 40% of the new unit. Not only that but they are saying they have only been here ONCE, in 2009. They are not even showing the replacement door being installed. I told them to call the repair guys, they would remember being here numerous times. Plus, the initial supervisor had ALL of the repair visits listed in her file.

Now they have all disappeared. They just kept saying we were told about the 40% (no way--I would NOT pay a dime more for anything GE) and we were out of warranty and that was that. I am warning all of you--DO NOT BUY GE!! They lied to us about the replacement unit and about their repair visits.

GE Customer Relations Sucks -- Beware of Product Support
By -

My $3300 GE Profile fridge is less than 3 years old and it died. I contacted repair; I have a 3-year service contract on the appliance. The service tech diagnosed the problem and ordered a part. I was told the part would take a day or two to arrive and would be FedEx'd directly to my house. Four days later, I get a call from GE Parts. The part is on back-order and will not be arrive for approximately 1 month!

I called GE Customer Relations (a misnomer if ever I heard one) and complained. I asked that GE either find the part immediately or failing that, reimburse me for the cost of a replacement unit. The customer relations representative politely declined and offered me reimbursement for rental of a dorm fridge! Are they kidding? I am supposed to maintain a family for more than a month with a dorm fridge? I don't think so.

I asked to speak to a manager at GE and was informed that managers don't talk to the public...so here I am with an expensive boat anchor that will take a month or more to fix. How GE could not find a part for a unit that isn't 3 years old is beyond me. I suspect that GE has to go back to China or Mexico for the part (as the original unit was assembled in Mexico). No more GE products for me. I ran to Sears and purchased a Kenmore (actually LG) fridge. GE and its customer service sucks. Don't waste your hard-earned dollars on GE products; they are poorly built and they are not backed up by a reliable company anymore.

Circuit Board an Expensive Fix
By -

SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA -- I've only had my GE Profile french door, bottom freezer refrigerator for a year and a half. I bought the whole line of products (stove, dishwasher and fridge) after remodeling my kitchen. Of course, the one thing that isn't covered under the standard warranty is the one thing that breaks. Sears repair service is the only thing I can think of that is actually worse than the product itself. False promises, nasty customer service reps, total lack of empathy is delivered with an almost $500 bill. Totally lame. Now I wonder what I could have purchased (in the beginning) for $500 more. Probably something a lot more reliable. Totally lame.

GE Sucks
By -

We recently purchased FOUR brand spanking new GE profile appliances, supposedly top of the line, for our recently renovated kitchen. So far we are 4 for 4 for malfunctioning appliances. The dishwasher was beyond repair so they totally replaced. The microwave they now have to replace the computer. The refrigerator shelves broke when we first loaded them up (they sent us an extra shelf for the future-- bodes ill for future repair probability), and the oven is the worst of all. It gets so hot on the outside that it literally melted the knobs on the front of the appliance (and this is the stainless steel version of the gas range/double oven).

They will not replace the unit because they say the 1 year "unlimited" warranty only covers replacement if it's beyond repair. However, they have been unable to get the parts needed to repair it for a month so we continue to be ovenless. In response to these serial problems, they offered to extend the warranty on all the appliances by 6 months. Now I'm worried about the range catching fire, as previously reported on this site. Now the rumor is that GE is selling their appliance division, and I hear more and more problems. I would NOT recommend any GE appliance purchases in the future to anyone.

Ice maker problems
By -

CANTONMENT, FLORIDA -- I am retired and have plenty of time now. So it does not bother me to stand for 25 minutes in front of my new top of the line stainless steel GE Profile reefer to get a glass of ice. The ice machine drops a small chunk of ice out every 42 seconds. The tech that came out said nothing is wrong with it unless you want to blame the engineers that designed an ice bin that tilts up and away from the dispenser chute (sort of like pushing a rope uphill).

Look where our college tax dollars go to. By the way, our new profile smooth top stove has been replaced 5 times in 2 years. 5 times. The computer boards seem to fry. I thought you were supposed to fry chicken on these stoves, nooo. We also have a profile microwave and oven and so far no problem with these but hey, I am looking for these to go out at any time if the other products are an indication of the workmanship.

Exploding Inner Oven Door
By -

We recently purchased all GE Profile Appliances for our new home. I absolutely loved my dual convection gas oven until today. The oven has been in use about six months and after a particularly messy roast chicken from the weekend, I put on the self clean feature today. After it had been on for about an hour, I noticed that the inside glass on the oven looked like it had shattered. Sure enough, once it had completed its cycle and I could open the door, shards of glass fell out all over the kitchen floor. It's three weeks before Christmas and they can't even send out a repair person until next week! I am not impressed at all.

Dissatisfied Customer

HAMILTON, OKLAHOMA -- We own a GE Profile Double Convection oven and starting about 2 months ago we began getting an F7 error on our control panel. We read in the "troubleshooting" portion of our manual and were instructed to turn off the breaker for a short time and turn it back on. This fixed the problem for about 3 days. We continued to do the same thing for several weeks and now the oven won't work at all. We contacted GE 1 month ago and couldn't get a serviceman to our house for 2 weeks because they were so backed up.

The serviceman came to our house (after being instructed to call our cell phone first) and no one was home so we were left a note to reschedule which we did. The soonest appt. was 1 week later which was today. The serviceman came to the house and immediately knew what the problem was but said this never happens in this style of oven therefore he didn't have the part readily available and won't be in until next Thursday and will cost $240.00 to repair.

I have now been without a properly working oven for 2 months and have a house full coming for Mother's Day! GE was more worried about how we would be paying (cash, check or charge) when we made the service call and not as concerned about the problem at hand. I'm not impressed!

VENTURA, CALIFORNIA -- I purchase a new GE Profile range. Upon installation, an inside valve was defective. I called GE consumer relations for help getting a new stove sent out. GE said they couldn't send a new one and that the one that I got had to be repaired! GE called A&E, an authorized repair company. A tech was sent and said it would take a week to get the part for repair.

I called GE customer service to ask for help to expedite shipping the part. They said they would try to have it shipped next day. 7 days later, I called A&E for an update on the part and repair. The part still had not shipped. I called GE consumer relations pleading for help for the next 3 days. 4 days later the part was shipped. The stove was finally repaired more than 2 weeks later after calling GE consumer relations and A&E a GE authorized repair provider! I will never buy another GE product again or use or recommend A&E to repair any products again! Buyer beware.

Horrible Product

VERY DISAPPOINTED in GE for selling this lousy product, in Consumer Reports for listing it as a 'Best Buy' and in myself for not returning it the first time it broke down. 6 months in owning it the 'motherboard' was fried. It's been replaced 3 more times in 4 years - broke down again yesterday and the repairman can't even fix it (fan, compressor and motherboard shot) for an amount that makes sense so it's going to now be used as landfill. DO NOT BUY THIS OR ANY GE product - there is no quality control any longer at this company.

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY -- I purchased a GE "Profile" French door refrigerator for $2,000.00 three and a half years ago. It is now unfixable because the defrost-drainage well is clogged "as the repairman explained" because of GE's design of it. Three times the repairmen have been to my home to replace the appliance but to no avail. Apparently the "well for drainage" is located where it cannot be reached because of the design. Each time it occurs the defrost water is backed up so it falls into the refrigerator and onto my floor.

I made a complaint about it and a case worker named ** was given to this matter: Case **: 1 800 673 5075 ext **. She told me the refrigerator was out of warranty so she could not replace it. The warranty is for one year. I explained no high-end appliance should breakdown in such a short period of time. She said this model is not being made any longer. I understand why.

I asked to speak to her supervisor and I did on June 11th (yesterday). He was rude and abusive to me. He said he would replace the frig for a cost to me of $1,062.25. I explained that I did not have that kind of money. I am 78 years old and widowed. How could a company as large as GE put out such an inferior product on the market, stop making it, and expect the consumer to pay for a replacement because, as GE says - "it's out of warranty." Can you help me?
