I signed up at the Gold's Gym in North Las Vegas off the 215 in July of 2009. I was laid off within weeks of joining. From August through Dec of 2009 I worked in Arizona for family and in late December 2009, I moved to to Oregon, near Portland. There is no Gold's ANYWHERE near where I live. Before I left Vegas for the last time, I informed them I was moving but was told I had to provide utility bills from my new residence to prove I wasn't going to be in Vegas. How could I? I hadn't moved yet.

I tried contacting them when I got to Oregon but when I called corporate, they said I had to deal directly with the manager of the Gym I joined-in Vegas. I then attempted to call them ( on more than one occasion ) but whenever I would call, the manager was not in. It became such a hassle that it was simpler to move all my recurring debits and bills from my main account to a new account and close the account that Gold's was billing every month. That was finally done in August of 2010. I had paid 32.99 a month from January through August.

Gold's doesn't cancel your membership under the pretense that they don't REALLY know where you live, however, in September, I received a bill in OREGON, NOT FORWARDED, but addressed to my Oregon address, from Golds. They knew exactly where I was and were under no illusions that I still lived in Las Vegas. Soooo, I calculated the months that I paid them 32.99 per and figured that the 263.92 was sufficient to cover not only the one month notice but also the 100.00 cancellation fee. I would not argue with them over the additional money I paid.

I even tried one more time to contact the gym in Vegas but AGAIN, the manager was not available. I decided it wasn't my duty to chase them down. They have a duty as well.

The corporate office called me and informed me that I was past due, I told the gal my situation and when she did the predictable " you signed a contract.." bit, I requested a copy.

It says" If member changes permanent residency to over 25 miles from the Club, and is unable to transfer to a comparable facility, such Member shall be relieved from the obligation of making payment for services other than those received prior to the move, provided Member supplies proof of new residence." -There is no stipulation about when proof is provided and so I am sending them a request for the moneys paid beyond my move.

Meanwhile, I received a call from a collection agency today. Now it's going to get interesting. Anyway, until people quit being paranoid about their credit scores and simply walk away or better yet make monetary demands against Golds, they will continue to abuse consumers. We are paying for A SERVICE. If it isn't provided, they have NO RIGHT TO OUR MONEY. It's in their contract. When they pull this cr@#, ask them to send you the contract you signed. You will see.

Did you try contacting them by mail? If the manager won't come to the phone a registered letter canceling the membership with proof of address change should be sufficient to end the contract. Not doing anything after not being able to contact the manager by phone will result in collections as you have found out.

Scammers Who Want Your Money!!! Must Read!

In April of 2010, I got a flier for a 7 day free trial for Gold's Gym. I decided to do the free trial since I wanted to start working out again. When I arrived at the gym in Culver City, CA and they persistently begged me to join a membership with them. I am a current college student with no job, so I was hesitant about signing up. However, the representative told me that he would lower the price to only $39 a month for 1 whole year. He also informed me that if I get 3 people to sign up with them, I would only be charged $39 for the first 3 months of signing up, and then I would get the rest of the year for free. That seemed like a great deal to me at the time, so I went ahead and signed up. The manager of the store named Jason came into the room and confirmed everything that the representative had said. My best friend was in the room and heard everything that they had said and told me. They told me to sign on the computer, whoever, they didn't verbally tell me what I was signing. All they told me is that this was my "verification paper", printed it out, and immediately put in a folder. They gave me the folder and sent me on my way. I put the folder on my shelf and never thought much of it.

The next day, I got my best friend, mother, aunt, and sister to sign up too, which meant that over three people had joined and the manager, Jason, had told my mother, aunt, and me that I indeed get the pay three month/rest of the year free deal.

After the third month, I was happy because I didn't have to pay anymore. However, a few days ago, I noticed that the gym had charged me for this month, which is August. I was confused because this was supposed to be my first free month. I called the gym and told them about the matter. They then told me that they said that if I get three members to join, I would pay a whole year and get another year free! That was NOT what they said to me!!!! I even have WITNESSES who heard them tell me about the pay three month/rest of year free deal!!!! They them told me to check my "contract".
First of all, when I signed up, they NEVER went over the contract with me. They didn't even take the liberty to inform me that that was a CONTRACT. They just threw a printed out paper and threw it in a Gold's Gym folder and gave it to me.
I looked at the paper and sure enough, in small writing, it said REG MIN: 11. What was that supposed to mean anyway!!!
It makes me FURRIOUS to know that they purposely NEGLECT to talk to you about the contract. It also baffles me how they lie to their customers and how they lact to explain EVERYTHING. They are true scammers and they don't give a damn about their customers. All they care about is money and that's it! I am determined to fight them on this and if anyone wants to join me in this fight, them please contact me. It's time that these FRAUDS pay for devious ways!

You need to send them a letter of cancellation in writing. Mail it certified mail return receipt. You knew from the start you really did not want to join, yet they pressured you into joining. Next time, just walk out, to avoid all this later on. They will tell you ANYTHING to make a sale. For them a sale means commission.

I wanted to add, never let anyone pressure you into signing an agreement you are not comfortable with, especially if you do not have a job. Just say no thank you, and walk away from a deal, rather than end up with a headache for something you cannot pay for.

CEDAR CITY, UTAH -- My mother was approached by the local marketing represenative for a Gold's Gym box in her store; the Flying J on 200 N. The marketing guy named Cody told her she would be eligible for 3 months free membership called the "box membership". She told him that she liked the current gym she went too but I (her daughter) would like to do the box membership. So I went in and told Kelsee that I would like to sign up for the 3 free month box membership and that the box was in my mother’s store. She continued to talk to me about random things such as the daycare program and tanning, but I am currently 8 months pregnant and was 4 months at the time of our meeting. So therefore I did not have a child yet and obviously couldn't go tanning. After a half an hour of random useless chatter she then asked me for my billing info and I once again made myself clear and told her that I did not want a membership I just wanted to do the 3 free months. She told me that in order to get my Gold's card she needed me to sign a contract and receive my billing info but I would not be charged. Which I later found out that she didn't even have me sign the right contract, she had me sign a full contract for 2 years without my knowledge. I had made myself perfectly clear that I did not want to pay any money and that I could not afford to have a gym membership, I just wanted the box membership.
So now 3 months later 27 some odd dollars was taken out of my checking account. I called the billing number that was listed on my bank statement and they looked up my account and told me that I had signed a full 2 year contract. So my husband called the local gym and asked to talk to Kelsee and she refused his phone call and had my husband talk to the receptionist, who was actually very wonderful to us and she is the only one I can say that about. He told her our story and she couldn’t believe it so she told him to have me come down to the gym and to bring my mom. So we went down to talk to them and she told us that Kelsee would not come out of her office to confront me, but that this other man would try to help me. All he did was tell me that he can show me what I signed and that there was nothing he could do and that Kelsee is their number 1 sales representative and would never lie or con someone into a contract. Then he topped off the conversation by lying to me and telling me that Kelsee was not in today but he could go talk to Lindsey. After he left the receptionist told us that Kelsee would not come out of her office and that we should just walk in there if we wanted to talk to her. So he then comes back out of Kelsee's office, not Lindsey's, and tells us that there is nothing “Lindsey” can do about it and that I need to call corporate. So my mom then walked into her office and confronted her while I stayed out and talked to the very unprofessional manager, who continued to tell me I needed to call the main office and that Kelsee was great and that she didn't do anything wrong. After we finally left that ridiculous place I then sat on the phone for 4 hours and left numerous messages on answering machines until I finally got through to someone. All he could tell me was that the good news is that my contract says Box Membership at the top but he needs to have his supervisor overlook it. Crazy enough the supervisor is never there and he has called 2 days in a row now to tell me that she is not in at the moment, and now she will not be in until Monday.
I am completely irate with the way we have been treated by this company. I obviously was way too trusting with this Kelsee girl and I just assumed that after she had heard me say several times that I didn’t want a membership I just wanted the 3 free months that that’s what she would have had me sign up for. Instead she took complete advantage of me and conned me into a 2 year agreement just so that she could make her commission for the day!
My husband and I have tried to be patient and we even called our local gym once more today (6-8-2010) to see if there was anything they could do for us one more time before we were forced to contact the Better Business Borough. The manager was completely rude and didn’t even try to help at all, he continued to stick up for Kelsee and not pay any attention to the things my husband was trying to tell him. He told him he didn’t care if we contacted the Better Business Borough and then got off the phone with us. After seeing your score with the Business Borough I can understand why he didn’t care, it really can’t get much worse than an F.

Abusive treatment by Gold's Gym staff and owner!

SEATTLE -- My complaint with Gold's Gym steams from personal frustration with the behavior of the management of the Gold's Gym in the Rainier Square, downtown Seattle. I am the store manager of the mocha cafe right outside of there doors and not long after the Gold's Gym moved in bag full of their trash was found filling up our personal trash. Not a huge issue, I figured I'd let them know, inform them on the other trash containers they are more than free to dump their trash bags in (not three yards from our own creamer trash can) and ask them if they would stop doing it. However, when faced with this managers from Gold gym straight up denied that it was there trash; that it must be Unico, the trash collectors. So the following time I found a trash bag full of Gold Gym's invoices and sales receipt, I brought it over to the receptionist, showed her the contents, and asked if this would not happen again.
The receptionist replied, "ooooooookkkkaaaaay", as if she had no clue what was going on. The manager Stephanie came over and that there was two things in the rash that were not theirs, that they had an "arrangement" with the other manager to drop off other trash, and that I was rude. I calmly told her that she did not have that arrangement with me and that it was not a little bit of trash, it was the entire trash can full.
Later, I hear slander from my employees (who have witnesses) that their manager, Nick said I was in a screaming match with Stephanie and that I am a raging b****.
I did not figure it was such an emotional issue when their manager Vince approached my employee, Brit with witness, Alex that we need to cut it out putting trash by their desk. He was yelling at brittany when she showed him the trash exclaiming he has no control over his night crew and that Unico probably did it.
I get in Wednesday and there is trash again from their location. I bring it over as promised and Nick comes storming, yelling, charging, at my stand (with customer witness) with his trash exclaiming (very threatening) that this wasn't there trash, I take a piece out and the first thing I grabbed was their trash. He yelled, "this is a free area" and I calmly said "no, sir, actually within the white tiles is our area". He yells, to the point where I am getting physically ill, shaky and physically threatened. "THis needs to stop", he looks at me and throws the trash in my direction into my stand. I tell him he is being irrational but he has already stormed off.
I call the appropriate people, where Mike the owner was informed.
He said he called the managers and fired the cleaning staff. Nick does not approach us to apologize, in fact my employee has to call him over to tell him he is not welcome where he immediately yells and insults my character. I walk up and he asks what he can do to make nice, I ask for an apology. He says he will not apologize if I don't and that "You are wrong and I am right".
THis whole ordeal, I will just say I have made to feel bullied, approached violently, and intimidated. He constantly interjected, not hearing what I have to say. Finally, he comes again. I let him talk, but feel his constant belittlement by saying things like, "I make five times more than you...." and "I wanted to throw that trash at your face..." (I have a witness and written recordings).
I apologize for what he must have seen as insulting by me simply showing him that it was their trash. He Bolts off (literally, runs away).
I contact the owner. Immediately, I get accused for starting it "there is always two instigators..." and "how he could see my managers saying that (that I am a ragging b****) and that you are combative". He refused to listen to my points, saying that "I rambled on... and would not stop to listen". However, I let the man speak his peace even through belittling comments like, "I have been dealing with people, trained thousands of employees..." automatically putting his credentials in my face to intimidate me in order to dismiss my complaint. He would not take responsibility for his employees actions stating, "I trust her (Stephanie) above anyone. I have been emotionally affected these past few weeks. I cannot believe how they are allowed to bully people around without having someone call them out. I felt bullied into apologizing for no fault of my own. I have started on depression remedies, where I am normally the sunshine in the room. I breakdown in tears, affecting my career and school studies. I have to work three yards from their deep intimidation where I am considering quitting if something is not done; losing all my income, possibly going on unemployment in this economic crisis. I do not feel safe at my work, for myself and my coworkers.

It seems like the simple answer would be to contact the garbage hauler and have them install a lock on your dumpster. You would have to remember to have it unlocked on pickup day, but that will keep anyone from using your trash can.

When I worked for a retail drug store chain many years ago, several of the stores I worked at had to lock their dumpsters to keep local residents from saving the cost of home trash pickup and bringing their garbage to the store and dumping it there.

Also Worst Company To Work For

CEDAR PARK, TEXAS -- I can write a book on the management skills or there lack of at Golds Gym. Not to mention how they treat the employees. The ONLY things that management "Had on me" was being late in the morings. In My Defense I HATED getting out of bed knowing that I was going to work another day FOR them. I LOVE My Customers,(still get to see some of them outside work, I go to church with some and clean houses for others, funny how they see & appreciate my strong work ethics) and co-workers and as far as my duties.. No Biggie.... I was housekeeping there and did it with pride. It was the CONSTANT harassment I had to endure from a female manager that felt the need to ride me damn near, throughout the day, EVERYDAY and make it clear that she HAD the TITLE to ride me. It was clear that she had this "Had To Make Clear She Was Superior To Make Her Feel Better". Never once did I let it affect my work performance EVEN Though I was ONLY Making Min. Wage. It was My Customers that made me through the day. UNTIL I Just couldn't anymore and decided to put in my notice this past Friday Jan. 8, 2010. What makes it worst is that I DID bring this to her supervisors attention and NOTHING was Done... I ALSO brought it to Corporates attention and "She was not sure what we can do, but we will talk to her about it". Really, in "her" defense, what COULD she do??? This place was SO Political ... Another instance, I was made fun of by BOTH this harassing super of mine & her boss when I ASKED them a 5th time about my remibersement over an 8 dollar T-shirt I HAD to buy to wear as a uniform that was stolen from their office. NEVER did they Offer or EVEN pay me back after they made me feel like a fool for asking to be reimbursed. Now I KNOW it may sound like a miniscule 8 dollars.. but keep in mind that they ONLY paid me 7.25 an hour, that very 8 dollars, I worked HARD TO EARN. Last thing, Thanksgiving time,..... They had, A SECOND time, made an error in my payroll. (Among other employees).... Having to make it from paycheck to paycheck, they owed me 14!! hours from AUGUST (this was Thankgsgiving when it was discovered) and ANOTHER "teen" hours from that weeks paroll. According to Corporate, "Company policy states that "WE" don't have to pay you those hours until the following payroll unless it is over a "certain amount"".. THIS WAS THANKSGIVING WEEK!!!! Of course I got upset and I told her that IF there was such a thing as Policy, wasn't there such thing as MORAL???!!! After hearing this.. I STILL worked my ASS off that day, UPSET. Once I calmed down some, I then Asked That I see a copy of that "POLICY". Wouldn't you know it, not EVEN 10 Mins. later... "My immediate super, the one who harassed me EVERYDAY, approaches me as though SHE was the one that "made it happen" and I can almost quote her word for word... "YOU BETTER LOVE ME! I TOLD CORP THAT YOU WERE MY BEST WORKER AND THAT I WANTED THEM TO FIND A WAY TO PAY YOU. I HAD THEM MANUALLY/HAND WRITE U A CHECK. SO YOU WILL GET YOUR CHECK HERE SOON". Serious?? I think that once they heard that I was not a dumb housekeeper, maybe they should pay me what I have worked for. GET THIS.... EVEN MORE>>>>>>> Because I was not the only one they screwed my payroll, My Co-house keeper... (A VERY soft spoken lady with CHILDREN too had a shorted check that payroll and am sure she could have used for their Thanksgiving dinner....) I asked the "SUPER HERO" BOSS OF MINE, " What about Terrie??? Are they going to give her what they owe her too?".... Boss said, "Well that was the other thing..... Ur going to have to keep this on the down low. They are not going to pay her until next payroll." THAT MADE ME FEEL HORRIBLE!!!! That was JUST not fair!!! Here it is January.. and that STILL makes me upset... To KNOW THAT No Matter HOW HARD U WORK FOR GOLDS.... They can just use you as a number and not appreciate strong work ethics.... So If your a customer of Golds... chances are if the gym is not up to parr.. It maybe because they treat the house keepers as though they are not worthy of being appreciated. Fortunately, Some of us take pride in our work and don't let it affect our performance. Like I mentioned earlier.. There ARE SEVERAL MORE Underhanded/ Immoral acts they committed... but I would be here all day and really.. I just want to wash my hands and let Karma visit those involved... Just so you know.. IF you decide to work for this company, be prepared to face a manager that evidently has security issues and will let you know that YOU are NO BETTER Than her cause she IS YOUR BOSS. It makes her feel better and helping her feel that IS a part of YOUR Job.

See...here's the problem. You talk a lot about strong work ethics -- and it sounds like you did take a lot of pride in doing a good job -- but you also freely admit you made a big habit of being late to work. The two really don't go together very well. Strong work ethic kind of has to affect all of your performance, or it sounds a bit like the employee is picking and choosing which part of the job to be good at.

Still, it's clear that it wasn't a good fit for you, and you are probably better off out of the environment. Many health clubs I've seen have very young management teams, and they just don't have the experience to be really fantastic at managing people (not an excuse, just an observation). And you are absolutely right -- payroll problems are a mess. You can mess with a lot of things, but don't screw with people's money. It's hard to look past that.

Golds Gym Lies

Late last year, my fiance and I went to sign up for Golds Gym so we could work out together. He is a bike racer, and works out with his team 8-9 months out of the year. We were extremely clear that we wanted a month to month contract because of this. The salesperson said no problem. So we signed up.
When we went to cancel the membership, I still wanted to keep mine. They told us we could not cancel because we were in a 2-year contract. I spoke with a manager, who told me that the salesperson who signed me up was fired for doing things like he did to us. He apologized for it. I told him that I was wanting to keep my part of the membership. We were paying for 2 memberships, but were under one contract. The manager told me this was not possible, that we would have to cancel the entire contract and I would have to sign my own. I asked how to do it.

He said to send the two barcodes, $100, and a cancellation letter to the corporate office and they would cancel the contract. I said great and I signed up for my own contract. I sent in the materials he told me to that evening and received an email from a customer service representative a couple weeks later stating she could not cancel my membership. I called to discuss this and she said there is no way to get out of a contract unless I had moved. I told her the manager told me I could cancel, otherwise I would have never signed an additional contract, that makes no sense. She said she couldn't help me because managers do not deal with cancellations and he shouldn't have told me that.
I said "so you are telling me I am stuck paying for three memberships for only 2 people?" she said yes. She called the manager and he denied every discussing a cancellation. I ask, though, why would I agree to sign another contract when I was already in a contract for the same thing unless I was told the old contract would be cancelled? Now I have two memberships under my name and two contracts for the separate memberships. I then said "so I am stuck in all these contracts because your manager lied to me?" she said yes.

I asked to speak to someone higher up about the situation and she said the only thing was to call their national office but I shouldn't bother because they would tell me to call her. I called the national office and spoke to a manager and told her the situation. She couldn't believe I was signed up for 2 contracts at the same time and she said that was completely against their policy and should have never happened, but she wasn't sure she could do anything since Golds Gym is a franchise. I am still waiting for a response.

I have been reading reviews and customer complaints most of the afternoon and see that I am definitely not alone. I feel as though I cannot stand idle while this company continues to operate unethically and take advantage of people. They will lie to you and then deny it straight to your face. In my opinion, what is stated is an oral contract, and they, in some situations, are breaking that oral agreement.

I suggest that you contact your state's Office of the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division and the Federal Trade Commission. It would be obvious to them that something is definitely wrong because you are one person stuck under two contracts for the same thing at the same time.

Wanted to do a follow up. I have contacted a lawyer who stated that I am not even legally bound to both contracts, and one should be voided out. After informing the company of this, they brushed it off and said to send a letter from the lawyer. I contacted the news yesterday and am waiting for a response. They will be receiving a letter from my attorney. Throughout this all, worst customer service and worst company I have ever dealt with.

Deceitful Tactics

SAINT PETERSBURG -- I joined Gold’s Gym with a Month-to-Month Membership about 6 months ago. I was told at the time of signing up that I could cancel at any time and that there would be no penalty or fees. I was also told that I would be billed for the remainder of the month I canceled. I remember reading in the contract that I would have to write a letter to cancel my membership, which I thought was not customer service oriented and I even mentioned that to the sales person.

So, times are tight and I decided that I need to cancel my Month-to-Month Membership and I called them up to do so. I asked them what I needed to do and I was told to write a letter to the Billing Department and then my final payment would be in January of 2009! I told the ‘Gentleman' that was unacceptable, I was on a Month-to-Month Membership and he said, “Well, it takes 60 days to process.” It does not take 60 Days to process a cancellation of a Month-to-Month Membership. It only took an hour to process our sign-up. So, not only is that ridiculous, but his math is terrible. 60 days is not 5 months. I was furious.

I told the ‘Gentleman’ that I would just deny their charges or cancel my credit card that is associated with my “Membership”. His reply was, “Go ahead. It’s your credit.” He was implying that if I don’t comply with their charging me for 5 extra months of service, then my credit will be ruined.

It would appear that they train their staff to be deceitful and to be bullies. I will try to work my way up the chain of command and resolve this to a more acceptable outcome. I will update my post with any further information I learn.

Update: I sent an email and never received a response and then had a death in the family so I put off dealing with these lovely individuals for a couple of months. They kept charging my card. I called and spoke with the billing department and they were curt, but I then called and spoke with the owner and explained the situation. He agreed to not make me send in a certified mail letter to cancel my membership and then just pay what I've owed up to that time. So... in the end. I paid for 3 months of membership (for 2 people) that I did not use after I tried to cancel my Month-to-Month membership. Steer clear of these ethically challenged individuals.

That's a sticky situation. You either cancel your membership and wait for the charges to stop, or cancel your card and ruin your credit. If it were me, I'd cancel the card.

Make sure you send that cancellation registered mail, and get a receipt. I am not a lawyer, but I believe your obligation ends when they receive the notice.

UTAH -- This company has the "image" have been a great gym, don't be fooled, READ THE CONTRACT FIRST...!!!!!! DON"T SIGN ANYTHING UNTIL YOU ARE SURE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND ALL THE HIDDEN FEES. "SPECIALLY THE MAINTENANCE FEE"

This company and their staff are carefully trained to hide every single possible fact written information in the contract. all they want is for you to "sign it".

One of the STAFF sales techniques that this company use is this "The sales man will always smile at you and will ask you personal questions in a very friendly way, he/she will fill out the contract for you and than ask you to write your initials and sign it, while the conversation still going..." WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS, KEEP YOU FROM READING THE FINE PRINT OF THE CONTRACT.

JUST ASK THEM BEFORE YOU SIGN THE CONTRACT, THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ IT AT HOME AND THAN BRING IT THE NEXT DAY.

MY EXPERIENCE WAS " THEY WOULDN'T EVEN LET ME TAKE THE CONTRACT OUT OF THE FACILITY".

My experience has been the same in every facility, they act all very polite until you sign the contract, the next day they won't even remember your name.

When you try to transfer services they will also charge you a fee.

IF YOU LOOSE YOUR BARCODE OR IT GETS DAMAGED, THEY WILL CHARGE YOU 5$ TO REPLACE IT....

WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLAINTS OR WANT TO TALK TO A SUPERVISOR ON THE LINE AT THE CORPORATE OFFICES AT THE NUMBER (801) 426-8644 THEY WON'T LET YOU.
JUST TRY IT, THEY EVEN TELL YOU THAT IF YOU CALL AGAIN IT WILL BE THE SAME STORY....

IN THE CORPORATE OFFICES, THEIR STAFF HAVE FALSE NAMES AND THEY WON'T TELL YOU WHERE ARE LOCATED.

THEY WON'T CARE WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO STOP CHARGING PAYMENTS ON YOUR ACCOUNT, THEY WILL KEEP GOING AND GOING UNTIL YOU REALIZE THIS ON YOUR OWN. Than again is time to call them deal with their "well trained" staff and they will take more than 45 Days to return your own money.... ( IT'S IN THE CONTRACT "EXCUSE" )

Yeap! its in the contract, in the area that your salesman filled out for you initially.


THEY CHARGE A MAINTENANCE FEE TO EACH MEMBER AND THE MACHINES TAKE MORE THAN A MONTH TO REPAIR,
THEY THREAT YOU WITH CANCELLING YOUR MEMBERSHIP IF YOU DON'T PUT THE WEIGHTS BACK IN PLACE...."DIDN'T THEY CHARGE YOU FOR MAINTENANCE"

I asked my the gold's gym rep. in if there was any information or anything hidden in the contract, he looked at me and said "No".

You know Mr Gold's Gym's owner with a contract, Utah is a beautiful place, filled with a lot of a variety of people that is increasing day by day, you have created not only a monopoly in the health bussines area, but also your staff is one of the highest turn over rates in Utah. Does this mean something to you?.

Probably is just good business at this point in your life.

Behind the fake gold's gym image of caring for a healthy society and for a healthy economy in your state (Low wages for your staff) there is nothing but a rich man with a contract.

So I'm going to take a shot here and say that you didn't read your contract first. These gym salepeople are lower on the chain than car salespeople I think.

Okay, let me ask you something, you whiney little Nancy-Pants. Did you read the "Terms of Service" when you signed up for my3cents? I have been a member of more gyms than I can count and cannot believe the drivvle that you posted here.
Gyms charge fees. They are cheaper these days than when I started working out in 1980 and they have MUCH better equipment. The maintenance fee you referred to was not a fee that allowed you to not pick up after yourself. I bet you are one of those losers who also doesn't wipe down equipment, close a locker when done using it, talks on his cell phone while on cardio and doesn't flush the urinal.
As for taking a contract out of a business, try that in any business. Whether you are renting an apartment or buying a car, they are not going to let you take an unsigned contract out of the office.
And yes, they charge for lost bar code tags or whatever. Just like if you lose your car keys, your debit card or your drivers license. The better quesion may be why do you lose your stuff?
Here's my suggestion. Don't join! I bet they are less than happpy to see you when you decide to grace their business with your presence.

I was reading reviews on canceling memberships

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA -- Yes I have been reading through the reviews of people canceling their memberships and having trouble and complaining. I have a copy of the contract at my house and I actually read through it. I have once had to cancel my membership and am now back at Golds. The contract states that you can cancel your membership if you move 15 miles from any one Golds gym location provided that you provide a 30 day notice, proof of residence, and send the cancellation letter via registered mail.

Now it seems to me that almost everyone here is complaining about things that are plainly stated in the contract. It has no tiny tiny print with which they are trying to fool you. Everything in stated plainly. Yes there is a lot of writing but that is because some idiots have probably tried to sue over something that they didn't read either, so now the contract must be very long and cover all areas. Every single one of the negative reviews that I have read about billing, canceling, etc; has been the fault of the person writing the review.

If you sign something that you didn't read first then I don't think you should be able to say anything negative at all. It is your own fault. And the fact of the matter is that many of you chose to add that the front desk girls were rude and unhelpful.....well, lets see you are calling and complaining to a person that makes $6/hr to answer the phone, they know nothing about billing and they could be fired for giving out any information for such a thing over the phone. All of these complaints for nothing. Many of these terrible things that you have written about like having to send a certified letter or not getting any help over the phone well those types of things are there to protect you. There are many instances where ex boyfriend/girlfriends/wives or husbands will call and try to have their ex's accounts terminated just for added hassle to them. And lets just say that you were wanting to send a letter to someone to tell them not to take money out of your bank account any longer, why would you not want to send it certified mail??? This protects you because now you have proof that you send them that letter and that they received it.

You people need to stop crying and take some responsibility for your own actions. Take the extra time to read anything before you sign it. There is someone sitting there with you going over the contract when you sign up, now they are not going to read every word to you, they just go over key points but they do know about all cancellation clauses etc, so take it upon yourself to ask. If you have to speak with someone about IMPORTANT account information, then go down there in person, don't call over the phone because they are not going to tell you anything. Also, if you must send any VERY IMPORTANT cancellation letters by mail to any company(not just golds) send it certified mail to protect yourself. I for one have been completely satisfied with Golds but I don't ask for much from the staff because I know all that I need to know. If you are wanting more one on one and having staff be more personal with you then you should consider signing up with a smaller gym. Smaller gyms know that even if they put 20 or 30 thousand into their gyms they will still not be as nice as Golds, so they will use the one thing that Golds doesn't have just because of its mere size. They have less clients so they can give them more attention and lets face it you know that all that any of you want is attention otherwise you wouldn't be wining and crying online. A relationship with a gym is similar to any relationship that you will have and this same reason is probably why you are in the gym in the first place......mid 30's to early 40's single and out of shape you aren't getting the attention you want and desire. Many of you divorced. You cannot seem to understand why the salesperson was so nice to begin with and then once they got your money you didn't get that ATTENTION anymore so you had to Complain another trait with which you are very good, another reason you're single and lonely. I've said all I have to say. Goodbye and I hope you learn something from this.

Ahhh...the other side of the coin. Thanks for giving us your side of the frequent disputes people bring to comments at m3c. I'm always amazed at how many people will sign anything put in front of them and then plead they were taken advantage of when the signed contract bites them in the tukkes.

james, there's only one thing wrong with your post: You make sense. The complainers and whiners don't have a bit of common sense. You're right about the long contracts now necessary because some screwball decided to sue, trying to make up for his lack of understanding. These silly cautionary labels affixed to items we buy are also the result of no-brain consumers. Couple months back I had to buy a new hair dryer. One of the no-nos listed on the label? 'Do not use in shower or bathtub.' Hello? My twisted sense of humor almost prompted me to wrinte the company and ask them what's wrong with using it in the shower if the water isn't running? Maybe I shouldn't give our give me, give me, give me consumers any ideas.

Possibly the worst review and worst comments I've read on this site to-date.

To those who are on the blame-the-consumer-for-not-reading-the-contract brigade. I recommend you join one of those gyms, read the contract 10x thoroughly, then try to cancel. It doesn't matter if the contract states in pt 72 bold letters "cancel for anytime for any reason", these companies can and will continue deduct dollars out of your bank account, just because they can.

Innumerous complaints/lawsuits have been filed and some state attorney general offices have filed consumer fraud lawsuits against those gym outfits--incl Gold's Gym specifically--for their unethical practices, especially concerning membership cancellation. In the meantime, ignorant folks on the internet with no clue on what's occurring are giving crap "advice" and blaming it on the victims, beautiful. I agree America is too sue-happy, but this is not one of those cases.

I have a membership at Gold's, along with 3 of my bestfriends, my brother, and my mom. Both my sister and my father have cancelled their's, hassle free. Along with a few of my friends. You see, when they joined they asked "where on the contract does it state your cancellation policy?" And they read it. Do we all see how simple that was?? For those of you that are illiterate, bring a close friend with you that can read.
Ask questions, learn the policies, read what you sign. Ask them to brief you through the contract, though I recommend you actually read the thing yourself.
I as well, feel this is your own fault. Next, you'll be on here complaining about your phone service, and then it'll be the cable company, because God forbid anyone hold you liable for a CONTRACT YOU SIGNED. Until you take full responsibility as to how you're distributing your money, don't be angry that someone else has rights to it.
Quickstep, you're retarded. One, nearly every nationwide/worldwide company has had lawsuits. Two, many Gold's are franchised, making them of individual owners, individual policies, individual staff, etc. Majority of these people complaining are of no due reason, I would vote about 98% or more. Leaning in the more direction. By the way, if your contract truly states you can cxl at anytime and they refused to accept your cancellation(written cancellation, mind you is a written contract), sue them. Though, I highly doubt that be the case! I'm guessing it was something like cxl at any time after the END OF YOUR TERM. Or if you've got a really good reason, like moving, or medical. I know you feel about 2 inches tall right now because you know you're full of bs, but instead of bashing someone with good advice, learn from this.

Don't Join Gold's Gym

AUBURN, ALABAMA -- I also made the mistake of signing a one year contract with the Gold's Gym in Auburn, AL. My advice to anyone considering it is, DON'T. I was told when I signed up that I would receive a monthly bill in the mail, and that they just needed me to pay the first month by credit card. Several months past and I did not receive a bill. I started carrying my wallet into the gym in case they needed me to make a payment, but it never came up. It wasn't until I found out that my checking account was not balanced correctly that I realized that they had been billing me directly from my checking account- without my consent, and without provided me with any invoice detailing what I was being charged for. I spoke to a girl at the front desk about the matter, and she politely informed me that Gold's Gym does not send out monthly bills and is not required by Alabama state law to provide their clients with an itemized bill. After that I began checking my bank statements very closely, and found that on several occasions I had been billed twice for one month. During the month of January I had been billed three times. I called to ask about the matter and was promptly told that if I had read my contract closely I would have known that Gold's Gym charges their members a $50 equipment fee at different times throughout the year. Apparently, the $50 you pay every month goes to replacing towels....wait they don't provide towels...o.k. so it goes to spray bottles to clean the equipment...wait they don't have those either, I guess sitting in someone else's butt sweat in considered hygienic.

Half way through my contract I closed the account Gold's Gym had been billing me through. I simply had forgot that their monthly fleecing that was still in progress. I also had been traveling quite a bit and hadn't been into the gym for approximately two months. About three months after I closed my bank account I received a notice from Gold's billing company out of Montgomery-the first notice I had ever received from the company- indicating that I owed them for two months membership, plus two $20 late fees, which needed to be paid within one business week or I'd be sent to collections. I called promptly and asked (given that they had both my address and phone number) why no one had bothered to inform after the first month, or for that matter the second the bill did not go through. The reply I received was simply that Gold's Gym was not required to do so by state law, and also did not send out monthly bills.

That was not the end of my troubles with Gold's Gym, but suffice it to say DON'T sign a contract with them. There are other Gym's now in Auburn that do not require a yearly contract. Additionally, the Gold's Gym in Auburn is; too small to handle peak hours; does not provide enough parking; has old and unsanitary equipment, and the men's locker room has only two showers (which appear wooden) and only one toilet. Look for another Gym, but if that fails, start walking....trust me, it's a much healthier and cheaper alternative than joining Gold's Gym.

OK, so as far as you knew - you were not paying for the gym but you were fine with walking in there and using their facility? And then when you discover that they were getting $ from you - AS THEY SHOULD since you were using the gym - you were mad that they took it automatically...uhmmm cmon. $50 + a month and you don't notice? Anywhooo is's your responsibility to balance your checking acct not theirs. You sound like a complaining mooch.

However, call your credit card and or bank and tell them not to accept transactions from Gold's Digger Gym. You might want to keep a file of all correspondence from Gold Digger Gym, as they may come out of the wood work on down the road.
Although I belong to gym a good cheap alternative is to buy good jogging shoes and fast walk for about thirty minutes. Assuming you don't any health problems 1/Do some pushups (4 sets x 100 repetitions) 2/Do some situps (4 x 100) that's what they do in Army basic training, and free! If all else fails dispute your credit card deductions from Golds. Good luck

I had the same problem when my husband and I moved from Utah to Texas. I called the gym company and they gave me the run around. I complained to the Better Business Burea and the company said they were not going to do anything. so I called my prepaid legal lawyer and the lawyer sent them a letter threatening to sue and the gym company refunded my money,apologized and canceled my membership in good standing. I don't know if they'll be able to help me. but I am contacting them. do you know, among other things, gold's gym changed my contract by changing my member id number on my signed contract after handing me my version? and that I was never informed of said change by Gold's Gym itself, I only found out because I called their old financial company (ABC) for help with a double bill and was told where I could see a copy of my contract on ABC's site as well as pay online. Gold's Gym never told me that that site existed, either. They also claim that a box is checked for 'yearly' on my monthly contract. By the way the Better Business Bureau has been known as a joke for years, but contacting them anyway on general principle doesn't hurt because of their reputation among people who still respect the BBB.
