Half Priced Mags is a Ripoff
Posted by Mrhand on 04/06/2006
NEW YORK -- I ordered a magazine subscription (Real Simple magazine) through the website www.halfpricedmags.com. The order was processed on September 5, 2005 and my credit card was charged $16.49 on that date.

I was originally told to expect my first issue in 6-8 weeks. I waited 10 weeks, and contacted the customer service email address (dan@halfpricedmags.com) on December 13th, 2005, telling them of the problem. I was told there was a "processing problem," that was resolved and I could expect my magazine in 4-6 weeks. I then waited another 10 weeks, contacting them again on February 20th to tell them that I had still not received any magazines a full 5 months after the original order. I received a reply telling me that there was another "processing error," and that I could expect my magazine in a few weeks.

It's now 6 weeks later (7 months total), and still I have received nothing, and Half Priced Mags refuses to answer my emails or phone calls.

I have no idea where the company is located since the website does not give a location. The only info I have is their customer service number which is 888-702-6480, and my credit card statement states New York as the location.

I would suggest anyone reading or that has had problems with them to file complaints with the Better Business Bureau, the Dept of Justice, and most importantly, contact Google because they advertise on Google. Use the form below to complain. If Google gets enough complaints, they'll stop accepting ads from them, killing a lot of their business.

I have had the same experience with them.. ordered Inc. and Fast Company back in November 2005.

Received Inc. just fine, but no Fast Company.. despite repeated attempts to contact them, they have not replied with any reason for the problem, or any refund.

I will be doing just as you suggest.. complaint w/ BBB, Google, and DOJ.

You're right, they don't post any contact information about themselves either.

I have the same problem! I ordered in Dec 2005. I still have not received the mag. They said they cancelled it. However, they never told me and they charged me!! They won't refund my credit card b/c they claim that its too old now. They said I had to give them my paypal which I did and still have not received any payment!!! Here's all the contact info I have on them: vpsupport1@softwareprojects.com, holly@halfpricedmags.com
, 'questions@halfpricedmags.com'; 'dan@halfpricedmags.com',cs@my1mag.com. I plan to write to the magazines myself to tell them about this.

Same happened to me! I ordered in April of 2006 & have not received any magazines! HORRIBLE...Stole my $34 too. Did you complain to the actual magazine company - telling what happened?

I am experiencing problems of the same nature. I've ordered Turtle Magazine from this site to be sent to my niece as a present from me. We never got it and I can't really track them. I'll never order again from tis site and I want to warn others not to d this.

I bought over $60 dollars worth of magazines from this website. Not only did they never send my magazines, they snuck 3 extra charges onto my credit card a month after my purchase!!! One was for another 60 dollars, 45 dollars and 9 dollars! I'm currently working with the credit card agency to have these charges removed (side note - Citibank is wonderful). This magazine website operates under my1mags.com on their invoicing - BEWARE!!!! and check your credit card statements!!!

This company is a scam. I ordered magazines in June 2006. Notified that there was a processing error in October after I e-mailed them. February 2007 - still no magazines and company is not responding to my inquiries. They take your money but do not give you a product. BEWARE - DO NOT ORDER FROM THEM.

I wish I had read this web site before I ordered my magazines. I was ripped off. Charged my credit card in Sept. 2006 and it is now Feb 2007 and I have never got the mag.

1/2 price mag is a rip-off just like all the other posters, ordered 2 magazines no shipment, I will try to get the credit card company to reverse the charges. google needs to remove them from their site.

one more that's been scammed! i ordered a subscription in sept '06, by november i had not received a magazine. emailed them since they have no phone # listed on their site. it was even hard to find an email address. i think now they don't even have that. anyway, i was told there was an error on my order & that it'd be placed again & take another 6-8 weeks! i was patient, but still no mag! i then asked for a refund, which i was told would be on my next statement. well, you guessed it, almost 4 months later, i have yet to receive a refund. on my last email from, meagan richards, who supposedly is a customer service manager, told me she was sorry for the problem & forward'd my info to the vice pres of cust service & i'd hear from him in 4 business days. 12 days later, no response. i'm not surprised about this & know that i'll never see that $ again or probably hear from them again. i have contacted the BBB w/ a complaint, as well as google. i'm going to contact the attorney generals office in austin texas & see what i can do. i hope they are shut down, but my guess is that they'll just come back under another name. thank you for the contact info gigi3. i will go there, as well. DO NOT BUY FROM HALFED PRICED MAGS!!!!

I ordered several magazines from this company back in July before I saw all these complaints on my3cents.com. I was expecting the worst & when my magazines did not arrive as stated, I emailed the company twice. I then, believe it or not, received a lovely note apologizing for the delay along with a promise to credit my credit card with the money I had initially spent.
What a surprise to receive my credit card statement & see that this was actually done! So there is some hope for those of you who have not gotten good results. Try again!!! You may be pleasantly surprised. Needless to say, I will never use them again.
Posted by ZenBlue on 2007-11-09:
The above e-mail was probably written by Joel the scumbag owner himself!
Posted by Cecily on 2008-07-04:
I had similar issues. It was a major pain. But if you talk with your credit card company, they can usually help you. Five months after ordering my magazines I received a refund because I worked with my credit card company to get it. When I tried to do it on my own, I was mostly ignored (with an occasional email promising action on the company's part, but no action was forthcoming).

Don't Order from Half Priced Mags it is a scam
Posted by Awbrumle on 03/15/2006
I placed an order for 7 magazines back in November of 05, I was also charged that day for the purchase. Three of the seven subscriptions started in December. The website stated it could take up to 10 weeks for a subscription to start. After waiting 14 weeks I emailed the company since there was no number on the website. I received a response very promptly from a man named Dan Conley. He told me that he checked into my order and he had contacted the publishers to take care of the issue. But that this would take 5 to 10 business days. After 10 days I emailed him again. He responded by stating that he had fixed the problem with the publisher and my magazines should be coming in the next few weeks. He told me that my Lucky subscription had to be cancelled and he would issue me a refund but it would take 7 to 10 business days. Well that was 2 weeks ago.

I have contacted the three magazines that I have not received yet and they have no record of an order nor is half priced mags a registered dealer. As of right now, I don't think I will ever get a refund or the other magazines. I think I have been scammed!!! Don't fall for it. If my situation changes I will post it but I don't find that likely.

Paid for Order Never Received and No Refund
Posted by Dudwalt on 03/20/2006
In early September 2005, I placed a magazine subscription order with Half Priced Mags.com. The company immediately charged my credit card. I was told I had to wait 10-14 weeks for my subscription to arrive. After 14 weeks, I contacted them, as I never received the order. HalfPricedMags.com responded and said there was a mix-up with my order and said it would be processed. After six more weeks of no subscription, I contacted them a again. They responded and said the order still did not go through and they are unable to process my subscription because it was no longer offered to customers --- even though it was still offered on the home page of their website! I was told a refund would be issued and I had to wait 14 business days. After 14 days and no refund, I contacted him again at the end of February and they said the "check" was mailed on a Sunday, Feb. 5! After several more inquiries, they said there seemed to be a problem with my order and he was turning over the matter to the accounting department and a refund would be forthcoming. After seven months of paying for a subscription I never received, I will never see a refund. I demanded a credit to my credit card but they refuse to do this. This group lies about processing refunds, and they lie about the services they offer. They take peoples' money and provide no service. HalfPricedMags should be shut down. There are other complaints posted about this company on this site as well as other consumer protection websites. Now, HalfPricedMags will not even respond to my e-mails. I paid for something that I never received and I will never see a refund as others have discovered too.

I work customer service for a magazine publisher and I strongly recommend calling the magazine before ordering through an outside agency. They can tell you if they have had complaints about them and if they accept orders from them. Also, the magazine itself will have the information regarding the contact of the agency so if you cannot get ahold of them yourself see if the publisher has a different contact or will send a letter through for you. Simple as that. Oh and by the way, the publisher does not choose who sells the magazines. They simply open a percentage to oustide companies and allow them to be purchased at a set price.

Online Mail Fraud - Scummy Scam
Posted by ZenBlue on 10/19/2007
May 2007 I submitted 2 orders for 4 magazines totaling nearly $60 dollars. Like other legitimate magazine services like Delta or BonusMags I expected the 6-12 week wait for them to arrive. September rolls around no magazines.

Series of e-mail complaints to company resulting in generic customer rep names (fake) saying there 'were processing errors' but publishers contacted. 6 weeks later; no magazines. More heated e-mail tickets this time claiming I'd get a refund credit; never came.

Several e-mails of "What's this week's processing excuse?" They stopped responding altogether. I submitted a complaint to BBB in NY. Claimed to send me a refund. Case sent through 2 times. I was FINALLY issued a check for full refund in the mail in October 2007. 6 months after my original order.

In addition to the BBB, I recommend reporting this company to the New York Attorney General Internet Bureau.

http://www.oag.state.ny.us/complaints/pdfs/internet_complaint.pdf

It's a waiting game where he's winning because people give up on getting their money back. You can put the same case # through BBB in NY several times, I did. Just be sure to fill out the status forms that the company DID NOT comply so your case stays open.

This experience really ruined my enjoyment of internet shopping. Now,I have don't have many magazines to read as screwed up my renewals which all lapsed!

In closing, keep at this company. I imagine with 700 complaints he makes money even off the interest of the funds he may eventually have to return. And NY AG why have you not taken this individual to court?!?!?

I also contacted Google several times that Half Price Mags should not be a 'Sponsored Link' and Google Check-Out taking my money. They're co-conspiring his theft. They have dropped him as a Sponsored Link I noticed. If they can't take the time to check out these companies don't falsely endorse them to the public.

Zen... internet shopping always has inherent risks and I stand by the old platitude. Frankly I'm surprised that you got a nickle returned. Here's another one... "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"! Oh and another.. "fool and his money are soon parted"! The point of these old saws is that experience counts for as much as any other form of education.

Zen, if you look in the mirror and repeat what old fart said to you, you might grow up enough to realize we is sharing his wisdom with you then you could learn something.

OF was on a soapbox with tired platitudes and thats why he got the response he did. Like he's immune from making mistakes. Apparantly the linear thinking comes in 'threes'... Can I get some well-thought out comments and not bogus Farmer's Almanac retreads?

Here's another comment straight from the trailer park above. Anyone educated out there?
Posted by DigitalCommando on 2007-11-10:
Hi Zen, I got ripped off by those magazine sellers that used to come door to door years ago, and it's never a good feeling. Knowing who to trust can be a daunting task especially if there is no prior long term history to deal with regarding the company. OF is a good guy, and even though his post appears to be condescending, I know he really didn't mean it to be that way. My first reviews here were met with some sarcasm as well, and now some of those people are on my trust list. Pull up a chair at the m3c table and put your 3 cents in anytime. The key here is to just roll with punches and don't take anything too personally.
Posted by Anonymous on 2007-11-10:
This is one guy who's not gonna get on my trusted list.
Posted by Anonymous on 2007-11-10:
Agree with DC, I was never ripped of by magazine sellers but my daughter paid a guy cash for a mag for me which of course never showed up. Welcome to M3C Zen, don't let a couple of posts get you off on the wrong foot around here. We all take a beating from some good friends and some real trolls from time to time. Just ignore the negative comments and post away, it comes with the territory.
Posted by Anonymous on 2007-11-10:
So your a Zen-retread and you will be the first to NOT make it on PWP's trust list. That makes you the worst person ever on M3C.
I posted something for you because it is better then your review.

Farmers' Almanac is an annual North American periodical that has been in continuous publication since 1818. Published by the Almanac Publishing Company, of Lewiston, Maine, it is famous for its long-range weather predictions and astronomical data, as well as its trademark blend of humor, trivia, and advice on gardening, cooking, fishing, and human-interest crusades. Conservation, sustainable living, and simplicity are core values of the publication and its editors, and these themes are heavily promoted in every edition.

In addition to the popular American version, the Almanac Publishing Company also publishes the Canadian Farmers' Almanac and a promotional version that businesses can personalize and distribute to customers. The total annual distribution of all Farmers' Almanac editions is more than 4 million copies.

Luckily ordering online is not generally a crapshoot if you use a credit card company with some basic consumer protections in place. I had similar problems with not receiving magazines that I ordered. Half Price Mags also told me that there were processing errors (only after I sent several emails and threatened to file a complaint with my credit card company.)

My credit card company told me that as I did not receive the magazines I ordered from Half Price Mags (after FIVE months), I did not have to pay. If they could not get Half Price Mags to refund me, then they would help me to create a fraud report and credit me the amount. This was enough to get the company to issue me a refund.

May be 1/2 priced, but worth ZERO
Posted by Higgs on 12/24/2006
Like others reviews, I had the exact same experience - Ordered on June 06 and STILL no magazines.

I may, however, have good news.

If you check out the BBB site, you will find that you are in the company of many others (62 have filed complaints about them). The good news is that the BBB has been able to get them to pay up in 61 of 62 cases!

If you've been taken by these guys: please do the following to get your issue settled and help protect others from going through the same thing.

1) File an online complaint at https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx
(you'll see that halfpricedmags it certainly known by the BBB)
2) Let Google know! Google seems to be the primary marketing channel for halfpricedmags.com - both natural search and sponsored links. Google wants consumer's opinions and has the power to blacklist these guys! visit http://www.google.com/intl/en/contact/rate_advertiser.html

Hope this helps!

This is a SCAM
Posted by Eli DC on 12/12/2008
I ordered magazines from this company and the never arrived. I contacted customer service by email since they have no phone numbers listed. HalfPricedMags Customer Support responded my email stating that I will received my mags, but that never happened.

I ended contacting the BBB, but they could not help me :(

DO NOT BUY from them!

The website halfpricedmags.com brought me to a blank page. It looks like they have gone under... Did you pay with a credit card, because you might be able to file a claim with your bank. This actually brings up a related question - with several newspapers and magazines calling it quits this year and more expected because people are turning to the internet for news and gossip, I wonder what happens to those thay pay a yearly subscription and only get a couple of copies before the magazine goes bust. I doubt there is a refund if the company is no more.

try halfprice.... without the "d"...
Posted by Ben There on 2008-12-12:
halfpricedmags.com gets many more google hits, which leads me to believe it was a real site at one point. halfpricemags.com without the "d" brings me to one of those fake websites that bottom feeders set up by registering a name close to a real business, the kind that have random links and lots of pop ups.

aaahaaa! Good investigation work Ben. You are so industrious. ;)

I try:) It is years of watching CSI combined with my great skill of misspelling URLs...
Posted by Anonymous on 2008-12-12:
LOL those misspelled URL's can certainly lead you to some interesting websites. Oh wait.. that was intentional. :-X

Ripped off and forced into store credit...
Posted by Wally Anti on 11/15/2007
AUSTIN, TEXAS -- My story is a long one so I'll summarize first and get right into the details after. Suffice it to say that Half Price books unintentionally sold me computer games made by Valve software that can only be used once, by the original purchaser. After that the product key that is unique to the disk is registered to that users account, never to be separated thereafter. I informed two representatives of the lesson I learned the hard way. The first suggested I buy a second copy of the game and gave me a smile that made me think of the down syndrome stricken. The second attendant took the game I was illustrating my point with and tried to ring me up for it while I was speaking. When I returned a few days later with my useless game the manager admitted it was their fault but told me I was only to be given store credit because I was outside of the 7 day return policy.

I explained that I work six days a week and could not make it back in time, but this was in vein. I will never buy from them again and I don't suggest anyone else shop their either.

I looked a Valve's CD reset info. They do not reset the key for software purchased at a used software vendor. In other words you were sold software that is useless. State law may provide a way to get a refund instead of a credit. The store's policy might cover defective software, but the software is not defective because it's written to allow only the original purchaser access.

I agree with PB, but the store return policy is 7 days whether or not you can make it back or not and they did give you a store credit.
Posted by Anonymous on 2007-11-16:
But the OP ought to research state law. Regardless of what a store posts as policy they can't go against the law. Although to protect his he should have at least called them to state that the software was locked.

I agree with you PB

Wow. After that, you get no sympathy from me.

Fraud
Posted by Floridabob on 10/12/2007
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Half Priced Magazines is a complete fraud. They accept payment for magazine subscriptions and never forward orders to the publishers.

It took me almost 5 months to get a credit issued to my account, and that required notification to Fraud department of credit card company and FBI internet fraud division.

This company must be stopped from these actions. If you have been defrauded, please notify agencies.

No Delivery...
Posted by DaveCarrera4 on 08/14/2007
I placed an order on Halfpricedmags.com in April, 2007 and received a confirmation email of the order on May 3, 2007. The charge to my credit card was $4.09 for one magazine (a good value). The confirmation email stated the magazine will arrive within 8 - 10 weeks. After 12 weeks I contacted their "contact us" link. I received a reply on 8/12/07 stating "I located the orders you are referring to and was able to identify the problem with getting your subscriptions processed. The issue has been corrected." Somehow I don't believe them. I have reported them to Google advertising complaint as they advertise on Google.

My next step if they don't reply to my complaint is to contact the better business bureau and my credit card company.

Don't waste your time with the BBB. Better to contact your credit card company. There are many, many complaints about Halfpricedmag and their other fronts never delivering subscriptions or refunding money.
Posted by jktshff1 on 2007-08-14:
PB is right...you only get them 1/2 the time..umm..mabey

What magazine did you order for $4? Most mags cost $4 for one issue.

Scam
Posted by Meme1030 on 08/07/2007
This company is the biggest scam ever. They don't have any contact information on their website. Holly, meghan and a few other selected email names are bogus. This company is ran out of someones apartment in new york city. One of the phone numbers is actually someone's house. They tell you they are not affiliated with mags for less, but you have to wonder.
