COLUMBIA, MARYLAND -- I went to the ER complaining of fainting spells at 9 pm. I got very little attention from the staff; it was misdiagnosed as a UTI and I was then moved to a short stay room at 3 am with an incontinent, hard of hearing patient. The room smelled of urine and the patient was constantly yelling for help; then staff had to yell so she could hear them. The morning doctor diagnosed my symptoms as dehydration and sent me home. Two days later I ended it in another ER where it was properly diagnosed and I received constant attention.

MARYLAND -- My husband was admitted on a Wednesday night after having 2 episodes of heart flutters, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness. Different tests were given and we were told by the attending doctor, who was an internist that all looked good. There was no cardiologist on call or any effort to get one! My husband's tests were read by a cardiologist electronically. The internist comes back and now has a diagnosis from the cardiologist. The internist could not answer our questions. We were told to see our cardiologist and that he needed to wear a heart monitor. How can a hospital not have a cardiologist around or call one in! We left not understanding much.

My husband was not taken out on a wheelchair, which I have never heard of! When we got home the next day at 5, we discovered there were no doctors notes so we had to go back the next day and get his notes plus much more information that we had not gotten. His nurse never came in just to ask if he needed anything or how are you doing. Not very friendly. I hope no one in my family ever has to be admitted to that hospital!

Surgery Error Has Caused Emergency Surgery for Our Daughter

COLUMBIA, MARYLAND -- Our daughter had laparoscopic surgery a few days ago, and was released from the hospital in excruciating pain, sent home with pain meds and told it would get better in a few days. Pain continued to get worse. She finally had to call 911 and was transported to the ER, after CT scan and blood work it was discovered that the first surgery was botched. She had a severe abscess and her bowel had been perforated during the first surgery.

We are now waiting to hear about the outcome of this correcting surgery, and the same doctor is assisting! When it was discovered that the cyst she had was attached to her bowel during the first surgery, they should have abandoned the laparoscopic surgery and opened her up to do it correctly! Shortcuts lead to nothing but problems for the patient. Now we wait!

Worst Hospital in Our Area

COLUMBIA, MARYLAND -- This is one of the worst hospital in our area. Unfortunately we do not have any other choice. This was my family 4th emergency visit. This time my wife had allergic reaction. They kept her for 10 hrs. Did nothing just IV and one medicine. In 10 hours nurse visited 2-3 times. Doctor did not visit after first visit for 9 hours.

Nurses are not friendly. One male nurse was very rude with my wife. What is the point of having call nurse button on remote. I left my wife for an hour and she had an emergency. She pressed nurse button. Nobody came to see her for 30 minutes sometime for an hour once we pressed button again and again. They did not do anything just wanted to keep her without any issues. They are like money making machines because insurance will pay them. Very very bad experience. If you can avoid this hospital please avoid it.

General Indifference and Incompetence

COLUMBIA, MARYLAND -- Howard County General is the absolute worst. My father was admitted with pneumonia, which was remedied and then the incompetence and indifference became more intense. I was present 49 consecutive days and witnessed so many violations of health and medical practice that the space provided will just not accommodate. My father had a catheter jerked from his neck by a radiologist which caused him to have a stroke. I witnessed a surgeon "dislodge" a stomach peg used for feeding and not report what he had done as if he's a ghost. His colleagues continued to pour ** into the peg which went directly into my father's abdomen ultimately leading to his death.

No apology, no remorse, great cover-up. This place is the inner circle of hell. Don't take your loved ones there. The Hopkins logo on the wall is just that. The level of professional competence from techs to CEO is certainly not Hopkins' quality.

Horrible Experience at HCGH

COLUMBIA, MARYLAND -- The workers in the cafeteria are so rude and clueless. They do not know what food they are serving or their prices. When you ask for help, they look at you like they are lost. I'd be surprised if they were literate. They won't help you.
This is definitely the worse hospital in the state and probably the whole country. Go at your own risk.

Emergency Room Waiting, Waiting, Waiting

COLUMBIA, MARYLAND -- Everyone says if you have chest pains go to an Emergency Room. They must mean somewhere other than Howard County General Hospital Emergency Room. The wait is incredible, about 11 hours before seeing a doctor. Lots of reviews about how long people are waiting there. Hard to believe because years ago it was a great place.

MISDIAGNOSED!!!

COLUMBIA, MARYLAND -- THIS IS THE WORST HOSPITAL IN MARYLAND!! DO NOT GO HERE!!! I went to the ER in severe pain, spent 9 hours to be MISDIAGNOSED and sent home with pain medication. Turns out, I actually had a very serious infection that was causing the pain. Howard County ran no tests or cultures for infection and I was NEVER even examined by a doctor. The only test the ER felt was necessary was an ultrasound to look for cysts. The doctor then sent to nurse in to tell me to go home. On top of being misdiagnosed, the general care while in the hospital was horrendous.

My sister, who was with me the whole time, arrived and was told to have a seat because I was having my blood drawn. That was a lie. I was actually sitting approximately 20 feet away in an internal waiting room and had to get up to go get her myself, thus my sister was now an unidentified visitor with no name tag or record of signing in. I waited hours for Hospital Transport to take me to the ultrasound department. Once my ultrasound was completed, I began waiting for Hospital transport to take me back to my room.

After about 30 minutes of other patients who finished after me being picked up and taken to their rooms, my sister decided she would just take me back herself. You would think an unidentifiable visitor transporting a patient in a wheel chair would alarm the staff, but that is not the case. She wheeled me past multiple employees and straight through the nurse's area without question. In this case, yes the unidentifiable person was my sister, but as a patient, I would like to know that the hospital has some level of standards for addressing visitors (wandering the hospital) that have no identification.

So if you don't mind a hospital that has zero regard for unidentified persons interacting with patients and you would like to be misdiagnosed, Howard County General Hospital is the right hospital for you.

Worst Hospital Ever!

COLUMBIA, MARYLAND -- Worst service ever. We waited for over 3 hours to get past the waiting room. Front desk nurse was rude and had no interest in helping us. Worst service and no concern for patient needs. Time is not an issue to the obese nurse sitting behind the desk because our visit was not a severe situation in her eyes. We will never go back! That's for sure.
