Stay Away From Hughes Net
Posted by Hotairman on 03/30/2009
HARVARD -- Whatever you do, do not used Hughes net for you Internet Service provider. There service horrible from start to finish.

It took their installation business, who is a contractor, 10 days to install the equipment. And then in the end I find out they did a horrible job of installing the equipment. The cable fittings at the dish were loose. When I disconnected the fittings I found one wire was crushed and not assembled correctly and the other wire was corroded or burnt.

Every time I called customer service they were either rude or I was disconnected. I tried for a week to get my service discontinued and finally succeeded to only find out they are going to try and charge me a termination fee of $400 and $300 for the equipment if I don't send the equipment at my expense.

Each time I called technical support the tech would always blame the weather. One time the service became unavailable. So I called tech support and spent 30 minutes to no avail. So the tech transferred me to advanced tech support. After 20 minutes with them they said they would reset my modem from their end. And I should be up and running within 20 minutes. After 30 minutes I tried and was still down. I called back tech support and the different tech said the system for my area was down and had been down for sometime. So I asked for a supervisor and was on hold for 30 minutes and I finally gave up.

There are some restricted websites that I cannot access and asked Hughes net for help in solving this issue. I talked with their tech support to try and resolve this issue. They continued to blame the website. But I can access these restricted website using Charter, AT&T, and Comcast. Hughes Net was not help at all in solving this issue.

I finally spoke with an account manager regarding the cancellation fees and they would not listen to me. I have pictures and all of the documentation regarding their lousy overall service and wanted to talk with someone within customer service to try and resolve these matters and all they could say was they were going to back charge me and refused to see the photos.

All I can say is stay away from Hughes Net. They are horrible.

I paid over $300 for a new satellite dish and modem from Hughes Net in 2008 when my old Hughes modem no longer worked. I pay $73. a month for high speed service. I have called technical support on at least 35 times since installation of the new system complaining about my slow speed service. In the past three months alone, I paid over $600 for another new modem, technical support site visit, a second tech support site visit and replacement of the dish radio transmitter, which was not necessary. The highest level of Hughes technical support, level IV, said the solution to my problem is to buy ANOTHER, upgraded modem. What a wonderfully enlightened technical analysis! I am not convinced that that will solve my problem. When I routinely work one web site that requires working with numbers, Income Tax Returns on the IRS site, it takes up to 75 seconds which is a lifetime when each line on a tax return requires a new number. I was promised a one month refund, whoopee, but did not receive. I would not recommend Hughes to anyone.

Horrible Crooks Stay Away
Posted by Kelbel on 03/01/2009
PELL CITY, ALABAMA -- This system is not what it is led to believe. You are lied to, and the equipment is not up to par. I had the service for less than 24 hours and it would not run. I cancelled the equipment and did not receive a refund after losing 125 installation on having it set, 40 dollars to return equipment, and 170.00 when it was first hooked up.

While calling after equipment was received by Hughesnet they told me I wasn't getting a refund. This is the worst experience ever and I want everyone to know what type of business they provide.

Seems as Hughesnet is getting more and more complaints around here. Wonder if they are getting worse or people are just growing tired of crappy satellite service? Having your provider 25,000 miles away can't be a good thing.

Don't Even Think About It !!
Posted by Sunset1711 on 02/10/2009
I love the rural location I live in, however, the DSL lines stop about a mile from my location. Unfortunately, HughesNet Satellite Internet Service is an option I've had to live with because there is no other viable provider for faster internet access. DO NOT USE HUGHESNET UNLESS YOU ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION. I cannot wait until the day I can fire them. (I considered WildBlue but their Fair Access Policy is worse than HughesNet - 30 day rolling . Should you go over your usage amount you may not have fast access for up to 30 days!!!) Forget tech support at Hughesnet - all the techs sound like they are first cousins of Ghandi but tell you their names are Rachel, Todd, John. Do they really think they are tricking you?

Expect to apologize for not understanding, and, asking them to repeat themselves more times than you thought possible. Both speed and uptime are sketchy - you will be productively frustrated. My rating is thumbs down!

Good review, you bring out some valid points about HughesNet Satellite Internet Service that people never think about like going over in useage etc. I have yet to hear someone ever say they are happy with HughesNet.

Got a buddy of mine that uses Hughes and loves it. Same situation as the op.
Posted by Soaring Consumer on 2009-02-10:
Just curious, doesn't the cable company have an option for you? Or is it also a similar situation due to the rural area?
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-02-10:
That is a good question Soaring. A lot of rural areas do not have cable service. Not even for television. Satellite might be their only option. I'd be curious to know if cable is an option in this rural area since DSL stops only one mile away.

great review. this service is also costly.

can you use a cellular card?

They Advertise Down Loading Movies Yet Half of Your Way Overpriced Time Is From 2am to.8am.
Posted by Juleshastings on 12/28/2013
DOUGLASS, KANSAS -- Hugesnet is misleading and crooked. I have no choice but to stay with them. I feel like I am being robbed every month. It is unbelievable how they advertised so misleads customers.

Half of the $159.00 per month bill goes to the hours of 2am to 8am. On the other half just 4 movies can take you over the limit. So why are they able to steal our money knowing we our a society who relies on the Internet for work, school and day to day life. Someone needs to put a stop to their control over us who have no other choice for internet service.

Late Charge for Equipment
Posted by Jimshipp on 12/17/2013
After paying $90 a month for Hughesnet for 4 years, which went out anytime a leaf fell, we discontinued service when we moved into our new home. We returned all the accessible equipment, but the radio transmitter was up on the roof and we couldn't reach it (nor we we told in advance that we would have to return it). Hughesnet said they would retrieve it for $100. Several months later, they hit my credit card for $210.60 for unreturned equipment. They never even tried to retrieve the transmitter and they charged me for it without prior notification, which overDrew my credit card, and caused several charges to bounce. I have made every possible contact and have been denied satisfaction at every turn. You should never, ever, ever, ever deal with Hughesnet.

Terrible, Awful, and Ultimately Frustrating
Posted by Melbart41 on 11/27/2013
VIRGINIA -- I have ben stuck with Hughesnet internet service for 7 years because I had no other options. As soon as I had another option, I took it and have now canceled my Hughesnet service. During these past 7 years, I have been so incredibly frustrated and angered by the Hughesnet technical support, it has been mind-boggling. During the 7 years, I felt scammed by Hughesnet repeatedly. First of all, if there was any wind, or clouds, or any type of weather other than sunny, clear skies, the internet connection would not work. Oftentimes, even if it was sunny with no clouds, the connection would not work. It was always very slow. Secondly, whenever I came close to the end of my 2 year commitment, my internet connection would mysteriously slow down even more. When I called to find out what was wrong, they told me a new satellite had been installed and that I needed a new modem in order to connect to it, which meant that not only did I have to pay for a new modem, but I also had to sign a new 2 year commitment. This happened more than once.

Aside form the internet connection being terrible and very slow, the customer service and technical support was the absolute worst. The representatives are impossible to understand because they barely speak English. I had an added problem because my computer was working from a router, not directly connected to the modem. The representatives were so frustrating and not at all helpful, and many times I would have to turn to someone else to help me get the problem fixed.

When I went to close my account with Hughesnet recently, they assured me the account was closed, only to continue to charge my credit card until I realized what was happening. Trying to cancel it a second time took about 3+ hours on the phone (cumulatively) with several calls only to be disconnected, transferred to another company altogether when I was put on hold (blatantly fraudulent) and told that supervisors were never available. Then, I was told that someone internally at Hughesnet re-activated my account without my authorization or knowledge.

Today, I am told that my Hughesnet account is closed. While I am guarded, I am also very happy to be rid of them. Caveat Emptor - Hughesnet is a terrible company. Do not give them your money.

Reset Tokens Purchased on Line
Posted by Mooangelose on 11/08/2013
While attempting to purchase reset tokens online I got a message the request could not be processed yet in the end was charged for 3 reset packages. When I saw the extra reset token packages which I still could not use, I called and was told internet purchases are non refundable and it was my mistake even though their system told me I had NOT purchased the reset packages.

Worst Company Ever
Posted by Monicalq1986 on 08/19/2013
Hughes Net is honestly the worst company I have ever dealt with. From the first moment we got installed we had problems. The guy that installed it damaged our gutters by putting a ladder up against them. When we called to complain and get the damages paid for we got the run around. They told us to email pictures to this email address they gave me. So I did about a month later after never hearing anything I called back. They closed the case saying they could not reach us and had called numerous times and that I never sent in the email. After verifying they did have my correct phone number I told the lady no one ever called and had I missed a call I did have voicemail and did not receive any from them. I also told her I could get phone records and had proof in my sent email that I did send them the pictures. Then one day my father in law who works in the cable business came to our house and informed me that they did not ground it outside. So if lightning struck the satelitte it would fry the computers. Which I might add are hospital property BC I work from home but am responsible for the computers. So at this point I was fed up. I called to cancel and the man was very rude he kept saying I signed the installation paper that it was installed properly and I tried to explain to him that the satellite was on the roof and the internet was working I do not do that type of work so I would not know if it was done correctly. I got no where with this guy just kept saying well you signed the paper. So I cancelled with them and they said they was going to charge me for cancelling the contract. I informed him I wasn't paying that we was already out money with our gutters plus I paid an installation fee which was never even installed properly. Well I cancelled anyway. They sent me a prepaid box to send back their equipment which I had no problem sending back. I put the two things that was inside the house in the box and then read that they wanted some kind of piece off the satellite dish on the roof. I called the guy to explain that we did not have a ladder or wire cutters which is what the paper they sent says you need to have to get the piece. He said well they could send some body to get it but I would have to pay for it. I was livid I told him it was their property and not my responsibility to climb on the roof to get some of their equipment. Never got anywhere and he said I would be charged two hundred for the piece if I didn't send it in. I told him I wasn't refusing to send it just had no way to get it and was not paying for them to retrieve their equipment. We did receive a huge bill from them and needless to say we r taking them to civil court. On another note my husband called to get a corporate number so we could talk to someone hire about everything and about going to court they refused to give us any phone numbers. First the guy said there wasn't any phone then he said well there is one but we can't give it to customers. This company is nothing but a joke and I can't wait until our day in court.

Next to Comcrap and DirecTV, HughesNet is fighting hard to become the worst of the worst when it come to providers. Only DirecTV seems to be able to come up with more lies and stories than HughesNet.

Bait And Switch
Posted by Junk_mail1217 on 08/03/2013
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS -- This is the mail I sent to HughesNet and was called back by an individual who did not know anything and continually informed me they could not return my account back to its original status. I started sending them an invoice once a month for 3 months. Current to date there has been no response from them which tells me I can now file the lien against them and take HughesNet property enforced by the local Sheriff. This ANYBODY can do to any major company or corporation for proof of violation which I have. Like most who have posted here I was sold one type of account and 2.5 months later it was changed without my knowledge, hence Cyber Crime, hence FBI investigation because of what they do with customers accounts without permission. I will be filing on them the end of this month.

NOTE what I am doing is PERFECTLY legal, hence your warning of what I am about to do if you do not settle with me. I would appreciate it if un-knowledgeable people would STOP calling me. You cannot offer me a Popsicle and then try to convince me it is a steak dinner. If you cannot have a person call me who can speak fluent ENGLISH and be knowledgeable of your business and US Law concerning the call is wasted and I will terminate contact ! ! ! http://yourbusiness.azcentral.com/place-lien-against-company-2682.html http://www.digtriad.com/news/article/178031/176/Bank-of-America-Gets-Pad-Locked-After-Homeowner-Forecloses-On-It Imagine this information being made public to the proposed 19 million customers you have all across the United States. You have but one more opportunity to settle with me and this is the first information I will make public.
