Cold Instant Potatoes & Burned Chicken
Posted by Greg397 on 02/15/2013
POCATELLO, IDAHO -- Howdy
Nancy and I have been married over thirty years and eat out a lot. We occasionally remember the two worst restaurant meals ever . . . a Denny's Dinner Meal and a Ruby Tuesday meal where the steak was so bad we threw it away.

Well . . . as of Thursday Evening . . . yes, Valentines Day . . . we now, unfortunately, have a third worst meal ever to remember! Yuck!

Summary:
1- The chicken pieces were dark . . .dark brown crusty . . . near burned.
2- The instant potatoes had nothing on them.
3- The split bisquit was seared on one side . . . near burned . . . and dry. . . dry . . . dry!
4- My wife's talapia had an odd texture and very little sauce with it.
5- My wife's mashed potatoes were served actually cold . . . with nothing on them, of course.

Highlights:
1- The canned corn.
2- Getting out of there.
3- Stopping for a soda to get the bad taste out of my mouth!

I'm not a complainer and I will eat almost anything . . . but that meal was truly awful and brings a bad taste to my mouth thinking about it!

The last time I went to iHop I ordered grits. When our food came out I mentioned to the waitress that she forgot my grits. I watched her go back to the staging area where she proceed to empty the contents of an individual packet of instant grits into a bowl and then dispensed hot water on them. I thought you got to be freaking kidding me.. No self-respecting man, woman or child would ever in good conscience eat much less serve freaking instant grits. I knew right then iHop was not to be trusted and I have not been back since.

iHate iHop and you should too.

Did you bring your bad meal to the attention of management?
Posted by Alain on 2013-02-15:
Instant potatoes in Idaho? That (along with everything else you mentioned) is just NOT right. Clutzy has a good suggestion. If you haven't told them yet, give them a call, Greg397, or go to their website and let them know this franchise location let you down. Instant grits sounds nasty, too, Churro.

Greg, you and Nancy deserve better. Telling management wont help. This is the norm for IHOP. As long as there are millions of sheep like Litteshort, they dont have to change.

Personally, I've given up on expecting a decent meal at any of the establishments that you mentioned. That doesn't mean that you should, but for me the probability of having a good meal at one of these places is under 50-70% depending on chain, which is far too low.
Posted by DebtorBasher on 2013-02-16:
littleshorty with a little 'L' and a short 'S'...but largely loved! LOL!

Did you remember to look at the sleeves on your shirt or coat? You have to wash the jelly slobber off of em. Have never ever been to an IHOP that didn't have jelly syrup slobbered all over the tables. The food? That's yet another story. Yuck!
Posted by JoeKay on 2014-02-20:
Layla, you took the words right out of my mouth! Jelly slobbered all over the place is exactly my experience in those restaurants for years. You have to shower when you get home. The sour rotton ham they served me 15 years ago insured that I would never ever return to one of those pig stys.

Worst Service Ever / Horrible Food
Posted by Kostadi.i on 12/15/2012
BRIGHTON, MASSACHUSETTS -- I went to IHOP a couple of days ago with friends. We all ordered our food after waiting for nearly a half an hour for a waitress to come over. When the food was ready, we could see it. We started taking bets as to how long from when the cooks put out our food, the waitress was going to bring it to us. It took her 15 minutes to bring it to us. She was a little busy laughing and talking with her other waitress friends. She was working real hard obviously.

Anyways, we finally get our food and as expected it was barely even warm. We ate it anyway. The quality of the food however was horrible as well. The pancakes were paper thin, very dry, and you could barely taste the cheesecake inside because there wasn't much. Overall, if you want a good breakfast, save yourself some hassle and cook at home.

I would have sent it back and complained loudly. Excuse me if I sound ticked off but I am tired of being a "victim" in these bottom end chain joints. I spend my hard earned money and get poor service and bad food. Mostly kids working there expecting a big tip for incompetent service. Applebee's, Olive Garden, Chile's etc. expect the same results. They have all lost me as a customer. I get better food and prices from my local restaurants. The owner is there who depends on repeat business. He makes sure to get it right.
Posted by smiley on 2012-12-19:
Kudos to the last comment from ok4now. We are not robots that are programmed to eat at these type of places. There are many many complaints about IHOP on this and other complaint sites,as well as Yelp. Our money speaks louder than any complaining. If we spend it at stores that perpetuate bad food and bad service, than nothing will change. I will never understand the draw of places like IHOP. Whatever folks, keep giving them your hard earned money, and keep up the complaining. But there may be hope, IHOPs same store sales have dropped for 8 quarters straight. So I guess some people are getting it.

go to a local dinner? lol these places usually have REAL food, went to ihop once, just once, could not tell the difference between ihop pancakes and mc donald pancakes their clearly micro waved
Posted by coon rapids minnesota on 2013-09-19:
the worst ever exsperiance at ihop the waitress was very loud and rude rather take time with friends and not customers she lost her tip i wont visit again
Posted by kim g. on 2014-04-12:
To Kostadi.i, I apologize because when I worked at my local IHOP, we had several servers (often, the younger generation) who would be more interested in talking with coworkers or playing on their cellphones than keeping tabs on their customers.
To Czeina, I totally disagree with the comment about the pancakes. Usually we had very good pancakes, and NEVER were they microwaved. Every once in a while, a newer server would be asked to "soften the butter" after the cakes were delivered to the customer. Instead of bringing a serving of slightly nuked butter, the server would take the plate of pancakes and nuke it AND the butter, which definitely impacted the texture of the pancakes.

5929 N.Lincoln, Bad Food, Filthy Restaurant
Posted by Chip.freeman on 11/21/2012
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS -- On Nov. 9th a companion & I went to IHOP at 5929 N. Lincoln Ave. for dinner. My companion ordered an egg dish that was ill prepared. I ordered the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and substituted corn for the broccoli. The meat tasted of old grease, the "mashed potatoes" tasted NOTHING like mashed potatoes and was cold. The next morning we, for some crazy reason, decided to go to the same place for breakfast. We were seated, handed menus and the waiter walked away. I went and ask him for a wet cloth so I could clean the syrup from the table where I was seated. He told me he would get it. He came, he swiped, he missed. My companion ordered pancakes this time and I ordered the stuffed french toast and, not learning from the evening before, eggs. I like my eggs over med but when I order them over medium at IHOP in the past, they come to me over easy. So to compensate I ask for my eggs to be over medium well. As my friend ordered pancakes we pulled the syrup tray closer. OMG, the table and the little short wall the syrup sits next to were filthy. Dried syrup with dirt dried in the syrup. The little short wall even had syrup dried on it. The floor under the table had, a spoon, several empty sugar packets, a couple of crayons and enough food for an appetizer. Our food came. My french toast was cold and the eggs were as hard as an egg can get with both sides brown and crusty. When I paid for this filthy, poor food experience I ask if a manager was on duty. The young woman said," Yes, he's here." So I asked to see him. She ask what could she tell him it was about. I said, the dirty restaurant, I'll be waiting be my table. She comes back several minutes later..."oh, he's not here." She ask if I wanted to leave my name and number so he could call me. OH YES. I did, he didn't. So the next day I fill out there on line form, one for each visit. I called their customer service number and told my complaintsto them. I was told someone would call me. No one has.

An excellent description of my experience at IHOP - heck, for the last 20 years. I declared those places "troughs" years ago and never looked back. Blecch!

Some of them actually have a few people in them; I presume they're blind.

Not unlike some experiences I have had at iHop. I did have a few good ones over the years, but they were few and far between.

Poor Management
Posted by Keithsenior on 08/23/2012
08/19/2012 while at the IHOP in Jacksonville I heard employees using loud profanity in front of the customers. I brought it to the managers attention because there was a family with three small children that had to endure hearing that garbage.

A bother to wait staff
Posted by Lkrout on 06/06/2012
OLATHE, KANSAS -- Upon arrival at Ihop I was ignored for over five minutes by the waitress standing at a service register ten feet from me. I finally said "Could I go ahead and get seated now". I was probably the tenth customer in this restaurant if I exaggerate. The waitress seated me at the first booth she came to and then walked away. The manager noticed me about fifteen minutes later and told the waitress to take my order. The food came quickly and the waitress never came back. Another waitress got my box and I had to go to the front register and have my waitress brought out to pay my bill. I left a quarter tip and informed the second waitress that the first waitress, who had already left before I could sign the receipt, that the service had been deplorable.

If the cops won't do anything it's probably because what you're asking is out of their jurisdiction.

Did you try calling the store before calling the police?
Posted by ketchup or blood - which is life threatening? on 2012-05-20:
remember, police cannot always get involved unless there's an actual law being broken.

Had a woman call 911 on us cos we wouldn't let her exchange her computer 3 months after the return policy expired. abuse of 911 cos it's not an emergency and we'd broken no laws in telling her "no".
Posted by FoDaddy19 on 2012-05-21:
I'm curious as to what kind of complaint against IHOP would warrant calling the police. Twice...
Posted by Mike in FL on 2012-05-23:
Short of an actual crime committed by a customer or staff member, not a doggone thing, FoDaddy19.

Some people have a very stunted perception of just what law enforcement is and what it's supposed to do. Customer service for a restaurant isn't one of them.
Posted by jayne cobb's cunning hat on 2012-05-26:
mike - exactly. that's why many people are being charged with abuse of the emergency system.

not being happy with your service is not a police matter. it's a civil matter.

Horrible service, Apathetic manager
Posted by Hrhslater on 05/09/2012
MANASSAS, VIRGINIA -- On Sunday, May 6th, I visited IHOP #3190 in Manassas, VA with my son and his friend. This is usually one of our favorite places to grab a quick breakfast or lunch when he's home from college. We have always experienced good food and excellent service, which is why this visit was so disappointing and annoying. When we entered, the restaurant was starting to empty out after the post-church rush. We were seated at a booth where the table was cleared but dirty. It took about 5 minutes for the waitress to take our drink orders and then our drinks didn't arrive for another 10 mins. She forgot my water (which I never received) and said she would come back for our food order. We waited another 20 minutes. BTW, the coffee was undrinkable - tasted about 3 days old. Tired of waiting I went to the service station and asked to speak to the manager. He emerged from the kitchen and barely listened to my complaint. He never made eye contact, never apologized, never walked over to our table. I went back to the table and the waitress came over and practically hissed at us as she took our order. She was inexcusably rude. I wanted to leave right then, but my son said we should stay because he was very hungry. We waited another 15 minutes and our food never arrived though the waitress did continue to give us hateful looks every time she walked past. The manager never walked over to check if we'd been served. At that point, I was so furious, I got up and left. There were several waitstaff gathered around the service station doing nothing, so it's not like they were short-staffed. I used to be a regular customer, but I will never ever visit this IHOP again. And, I will be sure to tell others not to go there. BTW, the General Manager's name is [snip] - I picked his card up from the front desk.

I don't know the name of the manager on duty, but he clearly needs to be replaced - he has no sense of customer service and at this rate a popular and busy IHOP will soon go downhill. There are lots of other restaurants in the area for people to go to.

The last one I was in had horrible food, the place was filthy and After leaving my name & number for the manager who at first I was told was there, then when i said I wanted to see him about his dirty restaurant suddenly he wasn't there, he never called. Never IHOP again. There are plenty of places to get pancakes that serve good food on clean tables with fine service.

For All You Complainers!
Posted by Tofu_monkey_poot on 04/24/2012
COLUMBUS, OHIO -- If anyone is complaining about food from ihop other than their breakfast, your an idiot! It's not the international house of shrimp or the international house of milkshakes! It's the international house of freaking pancakes! The mashed potatoes are microwaved! The broccoli is microwaved! The mac and cheese is microwaved! And the freaking oat meal is made from an instant packet right before your food is taken out! Most of the people that come in there to eat expect so much! Don't get me wrong, a customer does deserve great service. But when ya'll start whining about how your "shrimp" from the INTERNATIONAL HOUSE OF PANCAKES sucks, you need to be shown to the door and have that plate of food thrown at the back of your head! Even if the servers there do a great job, they only end up getting $2 or $3 tips on checks that usually average out to be $25! When your busting your [snip] for picky [snip]s and are still able to keep a smile on your face, $3 is NOT worth it. So do us all a favor; STAY HOME AND EAT! Ihop is not a fancy steak house. Get over it!

Which IHOP do you work for? I would like to know cause I don't want to go there and have you wait on me
Posted by The Triplets boy boy girl on 2012-04-24:
Some people do complain just to get free meals you know. Or because they are fussy. Some have real good reasons to complain.
Posted by Cwazychicken on 2012-04-24:
Well, i hope i dont get a server who thinks i deserve a plate thrown at the back of my head when i go to ihop! When i pay for my food, i expect it to be edible. I dont expect it to be 5 star food, but if its burnt or if its not fully cooked, i have a valid complaint. If its not breakfast food, i have the right to complain about it.
Posted by Cwazychicken on 2012-04-24:
Also, with your attitude, i would suggest you tone it down a little bit. Maybe a lot of people don't tip you very well because of that. Just a suggestion though. Even though it may be hard to smile and be friendly all the time, try to suck it up and remember it is a job and you need to do it to earn a living but dont take it out on the customers when you have a bad day and one bad customer spoils it. I know it sounds rather rude of me to suggest this, but if you hate your job, then work somewhere else. I have worked in restaurants and i just sucked it up. As far as tips go, its sad that people expect to be tipped, even if they don't work that hard for it and aren't very friendly, than to actually work for it now a days. I tip yes but if someone is awful, i won't.....I think a tip should be earned. Yes a tip is part of your pay, i understand that. But my money is limited and if i feel a server is just downright rude, then they don't deserve the tip. If a tip just handed to a waiter, like ruby tuesdays gratuity charges, then some people tend to get lazy and get an attitude, or take their sweet time and expect their tip. Which i think is wrong.
Posted by Cwazychicken on 2012-04-24:
Cant edit last post was gonna add this:

I usually leave about a 15 percent tip, more if the service is exceptional to my expectations. Im not rich, i figure 3-5 bucks for a 25 dollar bill is about average. That is what i tip too. If thats lousy to you, then i wonder what a nickel tip would be like to you. My brother worked at dominoes and someone gave him a nickel as a tip!
Posted by Churro on 2012-04-24:
You're preaching to the choir baby. I've been saying for years people should avoid Ihop. Shoot, I'd rather eat from a vending machine on a turnpike rest stop than venture into an Ihop. Outstanding reveiw!!!

PS

By the way you left out that the grits are made from an instant packet as well.
Posted by raven2010 on 2012-04-24:
If Ihop cannot do things other than pancakes to a minimal level of quality perhaps they should stick to pancakes.
Posted by kim g. on 2014-04-12:
To Cwazychicken, $3.00 on a $25 tab is only a 12% tip. I'm on a budget too, but if the service is decent, I still leave a minimum 15% tip, usually more. And if the food isn't good, DON'T BLAME THE WAITRESS AND TAKE IT OUT ON HER. She is only serving the food. The cook who messed up the meal makes at least minimum wage.

And to Churro - I don't know what *our* cooks did to make the grits, but when I worked at IHOP, I do know that it generally took at least 25 minutes before they were ready to go on our line.

Poor service and unimpressive food
Posted by Old fart on 03/17/2012
SAGINAW, MICHIGAN -- My wife and I ordered 2 take out lunches from IHOP today.
When we got into the food at home we found that my cheeseburger was virtually tasteless. barely any condiments, E. G. catsup and mustard, were used and the lettuce was like chewing paper.

My wife's patty melt was equally poorly made
with virtually no cheese, bland meat and raw onions rather than sauteed as should be on a proper sandwich.

The restaurant appears to be run by a bunch of 15 year olds by the looks of the service.

I rate this place as a 'D minus"!

I like the IHOP near my house. I don't eat there often, but it's good when I do.

On our way back from San Diego last year, we stopped at an IHOP in El Centro, CA. The place was packed. There were so many people there celebrating their birthdays. Guess the IHOP is THE place to go in El Centro. How sad

It probably wouldn't have mattered if you took it back. Sounds like they don't know how to make a proper sandwich. You should let them know though. Maybe they'll give you some coupons in case you're willing to try again.
