Poor Service, Mean Manager
Posted by Youngkao on 11/29/2013
SUPERIOR, COLORADO -- My wife and I were excited to go out to breakfast, however, we encountered the worst waitress and a manager who neglected to understand our situation., Our waitress continuously ignored us and never provided additional services apart from carelessly dropping down the food we ordered. No refills of water, freezing cold syrup for the pancakes (so called international house of pancakes), and a poor attitude throughout our stay. This waitress, however, was extremely delicate and generous to the white men sitting not two booths away. So I guess it's because both my wife and I are of Asian descent? We later confronted the manager about this problem, but she immediately defended the waitress and claimed that such an event was an impossibility. She did not even want to spend her any minute to find out the truth, she gave us a very mean look and walked out. I had no idea that such a nice town housed such racist and unworthy people. If you are a person of justice and enjoy proper treatment regardless of your race then DO NOT go to this restaurant. The manager's supposed to solve the problem, but this crazy manager did not do her job well and even encouraged her waitress to be mean to customer like us.

Online Menu Does Not Match In-Store Menu
Posted by Nworsham48 on 10/24/2013
MODESTO, CALIFORNIA -- So I have a half hour for lunch. I decided to travel a distance to the IHOP in Modesto as I have had good food and service in the past. I googled the menu before I left. Looking forward to the potato soup and sandwich combo as advertised. When I got there I asked the waitress for the soup sand combo and she looked at me as if I was speaking a different language??

I had to show her on the menu where it was located.... So as I'm ordering my potato soup, she interrupts me and to say she didn't think they had that?? She goes to the back to ask and when returns says they only have broccoli cheddar soup... So ok I'm already there and don't have much time left, so I go with the broccoli soup and half sand... It's amazing...smh... They put the soup in a cup with a lid and it's not even full.... A frigging half cup of soup... I won't go back and very disappointed!! I could have gone to a restaurant closer for less money.

Please recheck your menu items... If you advertise it, maybe you should have it in stock.

A lot of places that serve soup seem to not always have all varieties available. The staff should be aware that they have a certain menu item such as soup and sandwich. I found iHop's service and quality to be far too uneven, and gave up going there years ago. I had some really good experiences, and some really bad ones. I have further found that when I have tried returning to a place such as this to see if they improved, almost invariably I have a bad experience and say to myself I should have known better. Good luck.

Seating Problem
Posted by Pinkelephant76 on 09/30/2013
JACKSONVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA -- I went to your IHOP located on yopp rd, put my name on the list, and got called, Deserrie called us up and I told her I could not sit in the middle as
i am handicapped, asked to sit in booth, two were open at the time, she informed me that they were reserved, so my husband and I left. We have
this problem with this hostess every time we go there, she is always very
rude to us like she is doing us a favor as a person that has a handicap
i resent this hostess for drawing attention to us . This has happened a total of 4 times. We were not the only ones that left that Sunday. The people that were waiting behind us also left.

It is neccessary to tell them you are handicapped when you put your name on the list. It does little good to tell them after you are called.

An ADA complaint might be in order.
Posted by clutzycook on 2013-10-01:
Yes. When you put your name on the list, you need to mention that you have a seating preference. If you explain that it's because of your handicap, they may be a little more accomodating.
Posted by Nohandle on 2013-10-01:
A couple of questions here. Did you ever call in advance of your arrival and request a booth due to your handicap? Do you expect preferrential treatment immediately any place you go due to a handicap? No offense intended but it doesn't work that way for anyone to my knowledge. We all wait in line, handicapped or not.
Posted by Bee on 2013-10-03:
Handicap does not automatically mean "seat at a booth" In fact, my father and I are both disabled and we both find it much easier to manoeuvre into seats at a table rather than a booth.

You need to let the hostess know at the time you arrive that you would prefer to be seated in a booth. They aren't psychic and as I said, not everyone who has a disability wants a booth.

Dissatisfied With Prices and Not Honoring Coupon
Posted by Blackda10 on 09/01/2013
TURLOCK, CALIFORNIA -- My daughter and I went to the local IHOP on Countryside Dr in Turlock, CA this morning for breakfast. I had purchased a "Savearound" value book where scores of vendors in the Stanislaus County community join the discount offer and thereby get promotional advertising to offer coupon discounts, such as your coupon that says, "Enjoy a free entrée of your choice with the purchase of an entrée of equal or greater value and Two beverages; up to a $7.00 value." The $7.00 value does not cover the cost of any of the entrees to get a "free" entrée, but my complaint is that the coupon stated in very small print that I did not see that it is "Valid all day Mon-Fri, Sat-Sun after 4:00 p. m." With the purchase of two coffees, two small OJ's and two low calorie breakfasts, both the spinach and mushroom omelet with a side of three pancakes each, the waitress brought the bill that exceeded $30. I presented my coupon and was informed of that small print, making the coupon useless. In addition, the coffee was horrible, and they set the plastic coffee carafe on the table, leaving us to self-serve. How many people eat breakfast after 4:00??? They did not appear apologetic in the slightest at the seemingly misleading advertising --and the only print that was tiny was the "after 4:00 coupon use."

What do people with your coupons get, the leftovers? We will never go to your IHOP restaurant again. It is misleading and and appears to be using that coupon book to further there business in a greedy and ungracious way.

If its printed on the coupon how is it misleading?
Posted by andbran on 2013-09-01:
it is always a good idea these days to fully read coupons. IHOP was not in the wrong because it was stated what hours they take them. i am probably one of the few that can eat breakfast items any time of the day
Posted by CU on 2013-09-01:
I think it is pretty common practice to present the coupon BEFORE you order, not after. You could have avoided this.
Posted by MamaCat on 2013-09-01:
It's your job as a consumer to read the coupon and understand any exceptions or limitations. You didn't say that the coupon was for a breakfast entree, just any entree. If you want to use it for breakfast, go during the week, otherwise, it's valid for dinner. Regardless, I know a lot of people who will eat breakfast foods at non-traditional breakfast times and I believe IHOP serves breakfast 24/7.
Posted by Dennis on 2013-09-02:
We avoid IHOP due to the very high prices.

Posted by olie on 2013-09-02:
1. I'm pretty sure that the coupon booklet tells you to
present the coupon WHEN ORDERING. Then,
at least, your server can point out any "fine print"
before you make the decision to stay.
2. Many restaurants at the IHOP level of price/service
leave carafes of coffee on the tables, so that customers
can serve themselves.
3. The last time we ate at IHOP, less than a year ago and
not by my choice, I ordered "breakfast" at 8 p.m. I'm
eating at a place that specializes in "breakfast". I'm
not going to chance it by ordering a burger or steak.
Posted by BigAl on 2013-09-02:
Your complaint should be with the company or enterprise that sold you the coupon book. They were very aware of any limitations placed upon the coupon and agreed to those terms.
Posted by Chaparrita on 2013-09-02:
I love that IHOP leaves the coffee carafe on the table. That way I don't have to flag down someone for more coffee. Their coffee cups are so small so I have to drink like 5 cups of coffee. Personally, I love breakfast at anytime of the day. And some of their waffles and pancakes come with sweet toppings and its almost like a dessert.
Posted by kim g. on 2014-04-12:
1. When I worked at IHOP, I hated seeing a customer with a coupon at the end of their meal because more often than not, they hadn't read the entire coupon. Nevertheless, I would do what I could to find a way for the store to honor the coupon.
2. Most IHOPS leave the coffee carafe on the table because IHOP is the home of the bottomless cup of coffee.
3. Many people enjoy having breakfast for dinner. About half of my customers meals were breakfast regardless of the time of day.
4. I do agree that IHOP's prices are on the high side for it to be a family-type restaurant. And our store's military discount policy sucked - there was only one day a year when the discount was valid, and even then, the discount wasn't that much and only applied to the servicemember's meal. Fortunately if someone requested the discount on a different day, the manager usually went ahead and gave the discount - to me, it seemed so tacky to NOT give a servicemember/veteran some discount at all times for their service to this country.

Worst Customer Service Ever!!!
Posted by Kdowens71 on 08/01/2013
BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA -- When my family got inside, Rachel sat us down in the corner and told us that she would be our server and asked if she could start us off with a drink. We placed our drink order and Rachel brought those out to us very quickly but did not give us straws or offer any either. She asked if we were ready to order but my son-in-law and I were not ready so Rachel said that she would be back in a minute. Rachel never came back to our table to take our order. We waited for about 15 minutes to have our order taken before leaving. Rachel told the other waitress that she had forgotten about us but I knew that was a lie because two booths down there was a family of a different race and she made sure to wait on them and plus while she was standing by the hand sanitizer she looked right in my face. I watched Rachel take their drink order and bring them their drinks and then come back and take their food order in less than 5 minutes. The manager was told by the other waitress about what was going on but the manager never came out to apologize about what was going on.

We left and I ended up spending the same amount if money that I would have spent there especially since my daughter is pregnant, I spent that $70.00 some where else. I received excellent customer service elsewhere. Just because we are not of he same race did not mean that we did not deserve excellent customer service.

Made to Move and Wasn't My Fault
Posted by Arrington.mary on 07/17/2013
CLARKSVILLE, TENNESSEE -- I had the worst experience at this restaurant, where there was a couple sitting behind me with a child about 10 yrs old. He was spitting on me and I asked that he stop. This turned into an arguement.

The manager came over and basically scolded me, she said are you sure its not the ac vent? I knew it wasn't because I was getting splashed from behind and across my arm, not straight down, however was tired of arguing.

She told me to move, no one even helped me. I was juggling food, drink, keys, wallet, etc. This is a shame because I've eaten at this restaurant for years. Now I don't think I'll ever go back.

What you should have done was to just get up and leave. By the way, where were the parents of this kid?
Posted by madconsumer on 2013-07-17:
with the extremely high humidity in tennessee, it could have been the HVAC vents. a drip of water when hitting a solid surface will spray in all directions.
Posted by trmn8r on 2013-07-17:
The thing to do was get a manager involved first. Getting into an argument with another guest isn't something that will be well received.

That said, my mother an I had a not dissimilar experience in an iHop once. A couple of women with an unruly child were next to us. My mom turned around after having her booth kicked 5 times and said "can't you do something about your child?" to which one of the women reacted sarcastically. Then I got involved. We were not asked to leave or move, but the kid didn't bother us again.

Cold Instant Potatoes & Burned Chicken
Posted by Greg397 on 02/15/2013
Nancy and I have been married over thirty years and eat out a lot. We occasionally remember the two worst restaurant meals ever . . . a Denny's Dinner Meal and a Ruby Tuesday meal where the steak was so bad we threw it away.

Well . . . as of Thursday Evening . . . yes, Valentines Day . . . we now, unfortunately, have a third worst meal ever to remember! Yuck!

1- The chicken pieces were dark . . .dark brown crusty . . . near burned.
2- The instant potatoes had nothing on them.
3- The split bisquit was seared on one side . . . near burned . . . and dry. . . dry . . . dry!
4- My wife's talapia had an odd texture and very little sauce with it.
5- My wife's mashed potatoes were served actually cold . . . with nothing on them, of course.

1- The canned corn.
2- Getting out of there.
3- Stopping for a soda to get the bad taste out of my mouth!

I'm not a complainer and I will eat almost anything . . . but that meal was truly awful and brings a bad taste to my mouth thinking about it!

The last time I went to iHop I ordered grits. When our food came out I mentioned to the waitress that she forgot my grits. I watched her go back to the staging area where she proceed to empty the contents of an individual packet of instant grits into a bowl and then dispensed hot water on them. I thought you got to be freaking kidding me.. No self-respecting man, woman or child would ever in good conscience eat much less serve freaking instant grits. I knew right then iHop was not to be trusted and I have not been back since.

iHate iHop and you should too.

Did you bring your bad meal to the attention of management?
Posted by Alain on 2013-02-15:
Instant potatoes in Idaho? That (along with everything else you mentioned) is just NOT right. Clutzy has a good suggestion. If you haven't told them yet, give them a call, Greg397, or go to their website and let them know this franchise location let you down. Instant grits sounds nasty, too, Churro.

Greg, you and Nancy deserve better. Telling management wont help. This is the norm for IHOP. As long as there are millions of sheep like Litteshort, they dont have to change.
Posted by Wally25 on 2013-02-16:

Posted by trmn8r on 2013-02-16:
Personally, I've given up on expecting a decent meal at any of the establishments that you mentioned. That doesn't mean that you should, but for me the probability of having a good meal at one of these places is under 50-70% depending on chain, which is far too low.
Posted by DebtorBasher on 2013-02-16:
littleshorty with a little 'L' and a short 'S'...but largely loved! LOL!

Did you remember to look at the sleeves on your shirt or coat? You have to wash the jelly slobber off of em. Have never ever been to an IHOP that didn't have jelly syrup slobbered all over the tables. The food? That's yet another story. Yuck!
Posted by JoeKay on 2014-02-20:
Layla, you took the words right out of my mouth! Jelly slobbered all over the place is exactly my experience in those restaurants for years. You have to shower when you get home. The sour rotton ham they served me 15 years ago insured that I would never ever return to one of those pig stys.

Poor Management
Posted by Keithsenior on 08/23/2012
08/19/2012 while at the IHOP in Jacksonville I heard employees using loud profanity in front of the customers. I brought it to the managers attention because there was a family with three small children that had to endure hearing that garbage.

A bother to wait staff
Posted by Lkrout on 06/06/2012
OLATHE, KANSAS -- Upon arrival at Ihop I was ignored for over five minutes by the waitress standing at a service register ten feet from me. I finally said "Could I go ahead and get seated now". I was probably the tenth customer in this restaurant if I exaggerate. The waitress seated me at the first booth she came to and then walked away. The manager noticed me about fifteen minutes later and told the waitress to take my order. The food came quickly and the waitress never came back. Another waitress got my box and I had to go to the front register and have my waitress brought out to pay my bill. I left a quarter tip and informed the second waitress that the first waitress, who had already left before I could sign the receipt, that the service had been deplorable.
