Unhuman Treatment

PAINTSVILLE, KENTUCKY -- As a consumer from your state, I felt it was my responsibility to bring to your attention the following incident.

Paul B. Hall
Regional Medical Center
Paintsville Ky 41255 This letter is concerning the treatment that my father received while being a patient at this hospital. My father was diag. as terminally ill with lung cancer. He lived in Ohio. He wanted to come visit me here in Ky one last time. On his 2nd day I had to call the ambulance to take him to the hospital he could not rest or catch his breath. They put him in ICU. We had to wait 4 hrs before they put him in his room. They did not give him any thing to help him rest. When he did get to his room they gave him a shot and told him that they gave him pills in the E.R. Wrong they never gave him anything. The nurse in ICU called aback down to Er they said oh yeah we wrote it down but we didn't have any down here. So if I hadn't said anything he would have been charged for it and not got any benefits from it. I left him at 5:30 am and went on to work. When I went to visit him at 12:00 noon they had him tied up they said that he was disoriented. This cancer has caused him to be restless he can't be still so instead of giving him something to relax him they tied him up. He was telling me that he wanted to speak to the supervisor. He knew exactly what he was doing. I told them he had to have something to relax him. They said he was out of his head. They told me they were giving him morophine. Then in the evening they said that the dr didn't want to sedate him but yet they tied him up. My mother came in from Ohio and went to see him with my nephew. He was laying in his own waste. The nurse was a smart ass saying she just give him a bath and he would have to wait until visiting time was over. At that time I told her to at least fix his IV it was dripping blood all over his bed. She made the comment that she just didn't know what she was going to do with him. She grabbed his hand really rough. I told her that if it was too much trouble to take care of him I would have him moved to another hospital. I contacted the dr in Ohio to start the transfer process. My father was getting worse. When my newphew and mother visited they had to plug back in the nurses call button. They had disconnected it not once but twice. They did this so they wouldn't have to deal with him. He begged and pleaded with me to take him out of there they were treating him worse than dogs he told me. I did take him out of their on that Friday against doctors orders. The trip took 6 hours which is usually a 4 hour drive. They wanted 1200.00 cash to transport him. We drove him in his van. They admitted him once we got to Mt.Carmel Hospital. They gave him medication to relax him so he could finally rest. He also had liver cancer among other things. They put him in the cancer wing and made him comfortable. My father died on that following Tuesday June the 15th. It was a discrace the way they treated him. That Sunday before he died he told me that He wanted me to sue them for the way they treated him.

As a resolution, I would like the following:

My father is not the first person they have treated that way. If I had not moved him they would have let him die while being tied up. I would like for them to admit they were wrong to tie him up. He was not disoriented they just didn't want to fool with him. When I went to pick him up there was only one nurse in the entire ICU unit. We had to wait about 15 minutes until another one came in. Tell me what would have happened if more that one critical care patient coded at the same time. Who would she have chose to try to save? I want them to pay for their inhuman treatment of my father.

Please contact me if you need more details regarding this incident.

That sounds truly AWFUL! No excuse for being treated that way at all.
LauraW on 2004-07-13:
This kind of treatment is happening more and more often. I have recently read several articles on the problems with staffing because of a shortage of nurses and hospitals trying to cut expenses. It's scary because this could happen to any one of us.

My thoughts and prayers extend to you and your family. I lost my Grandmother a year ago to Calciphylaxis...very rare and painful disease due to End Stage Renal Disease. No one should be treated the way your family member was treated. I would have been frigin irate!

I wish you all the luck in suing this hospital. Last year my grandfather passed away in a local hospital after a failed "routine" heart surgery. He had expected to be home in 2 days. I fully believe that the doctor did something wrong, for after my grandfather did not recover he refused to speak with our family and instead sent someone else out each time we asked for him. My grandfather suffered at the hands of the inconsiderate hospital employees, and I wish my mother had had the strength and courage to stand up to the hospital and demand they face what they had done. I pray that God gives you the strength to take care of your situation.

Your post actually brought tears to my eyes. I can not imagine how a hospital could treat their patients that way. I really hope you get a lawyer and sue the hell out of these people. Best of luck to you and your family.
PeskyKittyButt on 2004-07-19:
Hopefully some of our more experienced law experts (MadEye!) will chime in. Definitely consult with an attorney about your potential to sue & what to expect. Maybe you can start by documenting EVERYTHING that occurred while your father was in the hospital there. Every name of every nurse, doctor, etc...
sallys on 2004-08-09:
I did contact the attorney general of the matter of my father's treatment. They didn't deal with these kinds of matters but they turned me on the inspector general. I called them Friday. By the time I got home from work, a caseworker called me to get additional information. She said they would do an investigation on that chop shop. I also wrote a complaint with the CEO of the hospital. She wrote back a very short reply, stating they would investigate. I am going to wait about a week to see what comes up then I am going to contact an attorney in another county who is suing the same hospital for just about the same happenings. Wish me luck! The look in my dying fathers eyes as he pleaded with me to not let them get away with the way they treated him. It only makes me more determined to make them pay for their actions. I know that no matter what they did it would not save my father, I only wanted them to make him comfortable, only they turned it into a torture chamber. If you have a sick loved one I pray they never end up in Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville Ky

Sally, I know it has been 2 years now, has there been any progress with this situation? I hate to hear of how the hospital treated your dad. Something similar happened to me with my Grand dad. Hate to say it but if you don't care then they don't care! Scary because this is there job (taking care of patients).

Very poor health care....

GLASGOW, KENTUCKY -- As a consumer from your state, I felt it was my responsibility to bring to your attention the following incident.

I live in Barren Co. Kentucky. Anyone, young or old, cannot receive proper medication for severe pain relief for any reason. The DEA has somehow taken over the entire area. There have been too many suicides due to untreated pain. I have suffered for two years and have yet to find a doctor to treat and diagnose me, much less provide strong pain relief. I am honest, law abiding, and until two years ago, was healthy; never took anything but an aspirin now and then. My husband and I lived in Texas for about 6 months when my back pain became unbearable. I went to a pain clinic, was told I have 'Failed Back Syndrome' and given a prescription for two medications: 1 non-narcotic, the other narcotic...no problem. When I got home, I went to the Urgent care doctor I always see, Ken Manion. I showed him my records from Texas and my prescription bottles. I merely asked him to continue my treatment. He got lividly angry. Said sorry, he can't see me as a patient anymore and left the room! Next, I went to a new pain specialist, Dr. Jain in Glasgow. He came in the room and said: 'Why are you here, anyway? If you need pain drugs, get out!' This has happened with four doctors so far. My pain is level 9. I cannot even dress myself without the pain medication. What should I do? I cannot survive without something to control the pain whether narcotic or non-narcotic...I don't care as long as the medicine works, but the doctors won't even discuss it. Drug addicts and dealers don't go to doctors with medical records and X-ray reports, so why do they treat us like criminals? We're suffering, our lives are destroyed by pain, and they don't give a fig. One thing I am doing is getting a petition together (1100 so far) with similar complaints. We are writing an editorial together and will send it to every newspaper in KY. Enough...

As a resolution, I would like the following:

I (we) want the doctors in this county to be reminded that they are healers. Supposed ease suffering whatever it takes and treat sick, hurting people with gentleness and kindness; not like stray dogs that don't matter. Living in severe pain is worse than death. An entire community is suffering here: children, adults, the elderly. Something has to be done to help us. The DEA has become the KGB and no one in power seems to care--until they are the victims of pain; oh yes, then something gets done....

Please contact me if you need more details regarding this incident.

I know what you are going through. I had a 4-wheeler crash a month a go. Pulled the muscles in my neck and all the tendons in my knee. The hospital sent me home with crutches and 2 pain pills. I went back to the dr. he looked at the x rays, nothing is broken if it continues to hurt then we can do an ultra sound, here is a script for motrin. Its a shame that because of the drug addicts, and abuse we the people that really are injured has a hell of a time getting some relief. There was a 2 doctors in our town who were arrested for writing 100's of scripts aday. So we can also thank them. Good Luck on trying to find a dr that will take your pain seriously.

I hope whoever wrote the complaint about Dr. K. Manion and Dr. Jain in Glasgow, KY sees my post.
Your words seemed to have been transferred from my mind to yours...I want to sign your petition, join a class action lawsuit for malpractice-neglect-mental cruelty and abuse-breaking several Federal Mandates and legislation (see on the www ACTION ON PAIN. I wanted to write you, but couldn't find your email addy. Here's mine:
ladybug@scrtc.com, 646-3157, home address: 3364 Austin Tracy Rd., Austin KY 42123 [southern Barren Co.] I wish to sign your petition, send it to the news paper, WBKO 13, and all agencies who might help us. I'm so glad I saw your post.
It's 2004 now and the docs are meaner than ever...

a new medication used for drug abuse treatment also works for pain treatment might help you. check it out, it's called suboxone. the doc I work for says its great for that because it is not as strong on the opiate side so that you have far less problem with abuse, but enough so that it handles your pain, check it out. suboxone.com

And on top of that, its the ugliest car on the market today. Seriously though, call around and see if you can find an attorney to take your case. It would seem to me, that if have documented proof that your car has been in 17 times, the case should be an easy one.
