Disappointment : Mascara.
Posted by on
I am a very loyal customer when it comes to Maybelline. The only makeup I use, is their products. I was overly excited when I saw the new products that were coming out. I was dying to try Falsies Mascara!!! I bought it a few days ago and opened it as soon as I got in the car, but to my disapointment, I was not at all satisfied with this product. It was messy & did not by any means live up to the exspecttations. I love the idea of the brush, but the product itself was horrible!! I love Maybelline 100% but just this product was really a fail.

OP, I am sorry you are disappointed. I have this mascara, and there is definitely a difference. My lashes look darker and longer, but, of course, they don't look like the model's lashes do.

Ksl2008 on 09/17/2010:
I notice a difference with this product but was still disapointed that it wasn't even close to what I thought it would be! =/
Anonymous on 09/17/2010:
Yeah, and you got to be darn quick on that second coat, or it IS a mess!
Ksl2008 on 09/17/2010:
Yeah I noticed that! I mean I love Maybelline!! but this was just not their best work!!
Skye on 09/17/2010:
They need to put a disclaimer on these commercials for mascara. All the models have fake lashes in between their real ones, so you think you will also get the same effect from the mascara, when in reality, you will also need to add false lashes in between your real ones. I only saw one commercial, I believe it was for Loreal mascara, about the models having false lashes in between their real ones.

I prefer the Maybelline mascara with the pink bottom and green top. I like how my lashes come out, and it's contact lens safe.
hacked in texas on 10/19/2010:
I, too, was excited about the new Falsies mascara. I love Maybelline products and that's usually the only brand I purchase. I bought a tube of the Falsies in September and was not overly in love with the results, but I was okay with it. The day after wearing it, my left eye swelled and turned red, but I did not think anything of it. I did not wear any makeup for a few weeks after that, but an event came up that called for wearing it. The day after, my right eye turned bright red and swelled. I still did not connect it to the mascara. However, a couple of weekends ago, I wore it on a Saturday night, removed my makeup as usual before bed, and wore it again on Sunday. On Monday morning, I again had a swollen and very red eye! I did my own little testing after that, and every time I wear this mascara one of my eyes will react! I researched it, and evidently the Kera fiber in the mascara causes an allergic reaction in my eyes! I will not wear it again! I gave it to my daughter, who has had no reaction to it.
NicolePrat on 12/20/2010:
I totally agree with you. I too was VERY dissatisfied with this product. It FLAKES like crazy after only having it on for less than an hour! It gives you the volume your looking for but it flakes like crazy!
patty on 06/07/2013:
My eyes swell every time I wear this mascara! I have never had a problem with allergies to cosmetics before. This mascara is toxic for me. My eye lids swelled like marshmallows and still haven't healed completely. Nightmare.
Kat on 08/23/2013:
Myself and many other people have experienced allergic reactions to this mascara. I have never had a reaction to any mascara until this, and it is the same with most of the complaints I read online. I should also mention this is the waterproof version, I have never tried the regular one. I'd really be interested to know what is in this stuff that is so irritating to so many people.
ashfletch on 10/12/2013:
I bought this mascara a few days ago, the regular one not the waterproof, and when I wore it the first time my eyes were fine but when I came to remove my eye makeup my eye lids and all underneath my eyes started to feel like they were burning and went bright red. I'm very disappointed as I like the way this mascara makes my eyelashes look but I will not be buying this again.

Eyes On Fire
Posted by on
CECILIA, KENTUCKY -- I purchased this mascara product on 11-11-11. About 1-2 hours later, my eyeballs were on fire. It felt like acid was burning them. My right eye continued to swell until finally it swelled shut. The pain was unbearable. I called the Poison Control Center and told them what was going on. They took my name and said I needed to go to the Emergency Room immediately. They asked which hospital I was going to and called ahead to the ER.

When I got to the ER, I didn't have to wait but a few minutes. The doctor came in, examined my eye, left the room and came back with some numbing eye drops to help take care of the pain. He informed me that I had Chemical Conjunctivitis, Blephritis and Pink Eye, all caused by the Maybelline VolumExpress. That was 11(eleven)days ago.

Today, 11-21-11, I saw my Family Doctor. My eyes are still bothering me, especially the right one. It is still draining, still swollen, and crusted together in the mornings. My vision is also blurred. My next step is to get an eye exam to see if I have any permanent eye damage.

There must be some ingredient in the mascara that you're allergic to. I would contact Maybelline and let them know what happened. I hope your eyes get better.
Ruth on 12/05/2011:
I had the same problem not the burning but the conjunctivitis and redness and swelling. The mascara is going in the garbage
Holly on 12/07/2011:
Same problems as Ruth. I am still using ointment for the scars and dermatitis I have from eye problem caused by this mascara!
jewel on 03/21/2012:
I cannot caution others against this product strongly enough. Both my daughter and I had eyelash breakage. My lashes are gone! I have used mascara for 40 years and never experienced this kind of damage.
Betsy on 05/06/2012:
I bought the falsies volume express washable and ended up having eye pain, blurred vision and constant watering eyes with crusting in the morning. After visits to the eye doctor twice, trying eye drops and antibiotic pills I saw no improvement. Finally determined it was caused by this mascara. I have stopped using the mascara but a week later am still having problems. I am very concerned.
Kathaleena on 08/23/2012:
I just googled as every time I wear this mascara, my vision becomes blurry - I can't see to read or type. This should be reported -
Cindi on 02/05/2013:
I have been using this mascara for approx 1 year.
I was diagnosed with blepharitis and because of that have had several stys during this time.
Never considering the connection, today I decided to research this mascara because every time I apply it, minutes later my vision becomes semi blurry and my eyes have a slight to moderate burning sensation. Which I always thought was due to dry eye BUT not anymore after reading this complaint and comments ! Thank you.I mean it's so irritating I could not wait to come home and remove my eye make up! Also my lash line is pinkier than usual and my eyes semi blood shot.
This mascara is IN THE GARBAGE,NOW. TERRIBLE stuff. I will never buy Maybelline anything, ever again.
Nancy on 02/28/2013:
Just used this mascara for the first time. Googled and found this site. Immediately after applying this mascara my eyes became blurry and had trouble reading. now burning and watering . Scared . Will not use again.
Dana on 05/10/2013:
I am having the same problems! My right eye has to be closed as I type this because the light is killing my eyes from the sensitivity from burning all day! I had used the falsies about a year ago but the tube and brush were fatter so I don't know if they changed something or what! Horrible!!
Sue on 05/26/2013:
That is because Phenoxyethanol is used in it and is a known eye irritant. I have stopped using mascara with this ingredient as well as Triethanolamine and the problem stopped after a week.
Tinseltown on 06/07/2013:
SOO happy to read this - I've been trying to figure out what it was. Started to feel it was the Maybelline Colossal Volum Express Mascara, which was new to me a few months ago, and don't use every day, so it was harder to pin down. Symptoms: initially only noticed dryness of eyelids. Upon closer examination, there was a red rash on top eyelids only (I didn't use it on the lower lashes, thank God). Put aloe vera on and omg the burn! but obviously started to heal. Next day, swollen eyelids! Next day, swelling a bit less, still red but only around skin that would touch eyelashes
ishy on 11/19/2013:
I couldn't agree more. I'd purchased the waterproof version, and two days later I was infected by chemical conjuctivis/blurred vision/extreme pains in the eye/rashes. I went on a treatment. Came back to it. This time it was worse. I ended up throwibg out my newly purchased contacts, this mascara and my eye makeup cosmetics. I have now extrene sensitivities to it all because of just one mascara. I'd never had issues with Maybelline or for the record any other mascara(not even the more cheaper ones), but this simply killed it for me. A no-no for anybody!
Alex on 12/16/2013:
Used Falsies mascara for first time this . Took out my brand new contacts at Noon as my eyes were bothering me. At 11 pm I noticed both eyelids are VERY swollen. They didn't hurt so I didn't notice till I looked in mirror. I knew it had to be the Mascara since its the only new cosmetic perfume or hair product in my routine today. Washed my face using mild eye makeup remover and now my eyes are burning, sensitive to light and constantly watering. Never had this happen from mascara no matter how cheap it was! Very displeased!!'

Bring Back White Rubber Eyelash Curler Refills

Please bring back the white rubber refills. The black silicone does not fit. Furthermore the black silicone refills do not curl lashes for myself or anyone that I know.

I agree 100%!!! The black refills are HORRIBLE, don't fit the curler properly, and do a bad job of curling the eyelashes. I'm thinking about buying an eyelash curler from Revlon to see if that'll work better... I've used a Maybelline curler for over 20 years.. I thought I'd never have to change brands!
Donna Lynn on 12/03/2009:
I agree with all of the complaints about the new black Maybelline eyelash curler pads. I have used a Maybelline eyelash curler for at least 30+ years and replace the pads every 3 or 4 months. I recently purchased the new replacement pads and they are terrible. They don't fit, they don't curl my eyelashes, the metal pieces touch each other and miss the pad altogether. Whoever designed this clearly does not use one themselves or they could have seen that the curved surface does not work. I tried another brand of eyelash curler, but it did not work as well. I thankfully found some of the old white pads online and purchased as many as I could. Please bring back the white pads Maybelline!!!! Thanks.
PepperElf on 12/03/2009:
I've never tried replacement pads for mascara before... didn't realize it was an option

tho to be honest some of the nicest mascaras I've used are actually samples.
there was one from almay and one from sephora. the sephora looked the nicest (though it wasn't water-proof or smudge-proof)
Ytropious on 12/03/2009:
I've never used an eyelash curler, and I rarely use mascara. I guess I was just blessed with nice dark long eye lashes by nature ::thumbs up::
Donna Lynn on 12/05/2009:
I called the 1-800 for Maybelline and registered my complaint about the new black replacement pads. They said that they do fit the newer eyelash curlers, but not some of the older models. They last forever, so the 2 curlers that I have are the older models. I did find some of the white discontinued pads online and ordered a bunch of them. The lady that I spoke to at Maybelline, took my name and address and said that she would send me a gift certificate, so that I could buy one of the new eyelash curlers, which was nice of her to do. So hopefully the new one will work.
Uncurled on 05/28/2010:
I wrote to Maybelline New York about this problem. I sent them a link of these complaints. The white eyelash curler pads are no longer available. I told them I would no longer buy their eyelash curler. Apparently, they really don't care...or they would do something about this problem. A good company would address such concerns. I have boycotted Maybelline! See ya 'round!
Elaine on 06/20/2011:
I agree. The new silicon eyelash curler refills don't work at all. I've been nursing along my last old rubber refill, and it is tattered and torn but still works better than the new ones. It won't last much longer, though. Disappointing.
diana on 06/27/2011:
The new curler pads are awful! Please bring back the white ones!

I am so glad to see that there are other ladies who think that the black silicone refills stink. My eyelashes are hard to curl in the first place and now they are harder than ever to curl. No one makes a rubber refill. All of them are the crappy silicone refills. Whoever decided to change them needs their head examined. Must have been a guy.
Bridget on 08/05/2012:

Bring back the white refills!!!! The black ones are worthless!! I too have used Maybelline for over 40 years, and am so disappointed I will have to switch brands!!!
Pamela on 02/23/2013:
I agree 100%. The white rubber refills WORKED!! The black ones are horrible and DON'T WORK! Also, the Maybelline Ultra Big Lash in the white container was great. The mascara now is NOT GREAT! WHY do they discontinue everything that works and replace it with crap!! Switching brands until it happens.
Susan on 06/03/2013:
I agree to bring back white replacements. The black does not last, nor does it work nearly as good as the original ones. They also do not fit snuggly into curler. I have had my eyelash curler for MANY years and have had to replace the black rubber twice already in a very short time.
Frances on 06/05/2013:
I have bought Maybelline's eyelash curler for many years. I for one can not understand why they would change to this black silicone. It does not work at all!!! Especially on straight lashes like I have. The white pad curlers were the BEST!! Didn't have a problem at all when curling my lashes. They curled beautifully until they changed on us. Please Maybelline bring back the white pads instead of those awful black ones you have.
Mary D on 07/01/2013:
The black refills do not work .GET RID OF IT AND BRING THE WHITE ONES BACK!!!!
Ellen M. on 07/06/2013:
In total agreement with above comments - the new black silicone eyelash curler refils DO NOT WORK, I have tried several, they are worthless. Sent an email to Maybelline requesting they make the white ones again. My lashes are very straight and hard to curl, the old white refills worked great. After 30 years, why would they change a good product??
Red on 07/29/2013:
I agree with all the comments..Bring back the white refills, the Black ones are CRAP...Why do you keep taking ALL the good products away??? And, calling it new and improved...
Elizabeth Western on 08/12/2013:
I agree with all of the above!!! White refills need to be brought back and you'd think the companies would listen to us. Black ones are TOTALLY useless!!
Barbara Enright on 08/20/2013:
AMEN! Why oh why do these companies try to fix something that wasn't broken in the first place. I have used Revlon Eyelash Curlers for more years than I want to mention and not only have they changed the white rubber pad to black "whatever" - they've changed the size/shape of the curler and they don't fit the eye socket! Have about 10 different curlers and nothing - nothing works like the originals....AAAARG!!
Donna on 09/05/2013:
I've used the white refills for 40 years. The black ones are too small to give enough cushion to curl my eyelashes. Bring back the white refills. I would have stocked up if I knew they were going to disappear. Help...bring back the white refills.
Linda Herold on 03/03/2014:
Please, I am Begging you ...Maybelline, Revlon, and others, who for some unknown reason ruined a wonderful product, the eyelash curlers, and replaced them with something closer to eyelash destroyers!!! to please bring back the rubbeer filled curlers! My rubber curler fillers are worn out and therefore I purchased the new curler, first Revlon's, then Maybelline's, then some other companie's and now I give up!!! These new curlers pinch the eyelids and pull out the eyelashes...Where did you all ever get the Idea to put Hard "whatever" as a pad in the curlers??? Are you crazy?? Or, are your ideas coming from some man who doesn't know a Damn or Give a Dame about women and is looking to make a profit, bottom line, from cute, cheap to make, colorful, at its best, eyelash curlers...whether they work or not!! Please, bring back the old curlers with the rubber fillers!!! Please!!!!

Eyelash Curler Refills... DON'T FIT!
Posted by on
TROUTVILLE, VIRGINIA -- I've used Maybelline products since I was a young teenager. I am now in my 50's and for the first time have a complaint. When I purchased new refills for my eyelash curler, they didn't fit. Thinking perhaps I needed a new curler, I went back and purchased one of those. Nope, the refills didn't fit it either. Next time I went to the store I purchased new refills thinking it was a fluke that they didn't fit.... NOPE... still didn't fit. I've tried 4 different pkgs of refills. They are the black refills and they are too short and not thick enough for the curler. I stuff them in and after release on the curler, they come out as I release, so each time I compress the curler, I'm having to reset the pad. They also squeeze the lashes funny creating a weird curl! Amazingly, I found that when inserted upside down they "work" better as far as the curl, but they still fall out upon release.

Anyone else having this problem? I called Maybelline, but got nowhere except that they would record the complaint. So, if you are having this problem, please call.

Hopefully the more complaints they have, they will see the need to improve. The phone # is 1-800-944-0730.

I've had my Maybelline eyelash curler FOREVER, and never, until recently, had problems finding refills for it. Then a few months ago, I went to replace them, and found they were selling the black ones instead of white ones. No biggie, they just changed the color, right? WRONG. They're too short and don't curl the lashes correctly. (Although I don't have problems getting the little refills to stay in the curler like you are). I was hoping Maybelline would start selling their old style of refills again, but if not, I guess I'm going to have to buy a Revlon eyelash curler, or some other brand.

Oh, and thanks for the phone number, I'm going to call tomorrow to let them know I'm unhappy with the new style of refill. Like you said, if more people voice their concerns, maybe they'll do something about it.
Excel on 11/12/2008:
I also tried this Maybelline Eyelash Refill. Mine stayed in but DID NOT CURL my eyelashes. I called Maybelline and she said she would report it and send me some coupons. I am still using my old refill (glad I didn't throw it out yet). I'll try the new one upside down. I may have to use a razor to put a slit in the top . . . that seems to be the biggest problem. It has no slit and is a harder rubber material. Please post if you can find some of the old ones.
Infinity on 11/28/2013:
Wow, so it isn't just me. Does this have anything yo do with the new plastuc curler they are making?
T. J. Perez on 01/14/2014:
For years and years I always bought the Maybelline eyelash curler with "rubber" refills.
Then all of a sudden they changed to some kind of acrylic material that just does not do the job.
Where can I find these older eyelash curlers and refills. PLEASE HELP

New Black Eyelash Curler Refills

NEWBURGH, NEW YORK -- I absolutely hate the so-called new and improved black silicone eyelash curler refills. They do not curl my lashes. I saved and cleaned one of my old white rubber refills. Thank goodness I did! Even the old worn-out one worked better than the new ones. Please bring back the white rubber ones. Even at a higher price, it will be worth it.

Slow uncomfortable burn

I have used different mabelline products over the past 30 years this is the first time that one of the products actually I think I may be allergic to. I put on the colossal volume express waterproof mascara and it looked nice to begin with but within about one hour my eye area started to feel warm until it turned into a burning sensation all aound my eye area. I removed tthe mascara within 2 hours and the burning sensation continued on.
I am not allegic to anythng that I am aware of and have used Maybelline products for several years this is the first time I ever had a reaction but ouch it was very uncomfortable. Maybe it was a bad batch? I know it ws themascara because that was the only new product on m face. I hope mabelline products gets this information.

Maybelline is pretty good at responding to problems, at least in my experience (or more specifically, my wife's). They'd want to know about this. Contact them via or, better still, give them a call at 1-877-456-5287.

unfortunately, there is a warning on the package to remove if this occurs. some people have reactions to their new ingredients.

I had a similar experience with Old Spice deodorant. I switch deodorants every few months just for a difference in scent. On one occasion, it started burning my underarms within a few minutes. I showered and it left my skin red and tender. Some time later, I tried the same deodorant again, without any side effects. Perhaps, in your case and mine, it was that one individual package that accidentally received too much of one chemical, or not enough of another? Best of luck in the future!
trmn8r on 09/05/2011:
I'll bet there indeed is something in this product you are allergic to, and it isn't a "bad batch".
Skye on 09/05/2011:
Water proof mascara's are too harsh on the eyes. I use the Maybelline mascara, in the pink and green tube, non-water proof and have never ever had any issues. I prefer this mascara because it's safe for contact lens wearers.

OP, you may need to visit your eye doctor, just to make sure everything is OK.

Why can't I find it any more

What ever happened to the color Charcoal Grey Eye Brow Pencil I used it
for years. It is what matches my hair and skin color. It is just not
right use some thing for years some thing for years and they take it off
the market BOO TO YOU MAYBELLINE THAT JUST SUCKS My mother used that color so what is up I tried to get in contact with Maybelline and got the
run around. Every time I have tried to find it on-line at Maybellines site they keep coming up with this crayon eye pencil. I don't want a crayon
If I did I would use one out of my grand childs Crayola crayon. Maybelline just lost another customer.

Don't you hate when that happens? Try eBay and stock up as much as you can. I did that when my favorite nail polish (Sally Henson Nail Prisms in Turquoise Opal...GORGEOUS) was discontinued. I was recently given a Physisian's Formula concealer that I can't find anywhere anymore so I'm a little sad about that too. There's always something out there that's special to you that gets discontinued, it sucks. I guess they do it because others don't feel the same way. I would try writing to the company (write a letter, not an email) and ask about it. Sometimes they offload some on you for free!

TECUMSEH, OKLAHOMA -- I agree with the comment I read. PLEASE bring back the white rubber curler refills. I don't care if you have to raise the price a bit. The black ones, as the other respondent mentioned, are too short, pinch the eyelid, etc.

Cheap to make is only good for the company, not the consumer!

Just after a few uses the "click twist" does not work and concealer is not being released.

After 2 weeks use, the Mineral Power natural perfecting face foundation jar has cracked and is falling apart. I use it once a day, keep it in a make-up pouch, that never leaves the house and is only accessed by me.

It used to be that make up could be completely used and the containers stood to the end. What is going on?

Your new product Dream Bounce Blush is so inferior to Dream Mousse Blush. Dream Mousse Blush is soft, spreadable and leaves a pretty glow. Dream Bounce is too solid, doesn't spread well, and looks like old fashioned rouge. I'm very disappointed with the way your company changes good products for lousy products.
