Meijer Is Clueless About The Concept Of Customer Service

NILES, ILLINOIS -- Twice I had to make a return to Meijer & both times I was told, .."well, this time we will give you a refund but, not next time." Instead of apologizing for my inconvenience, they are basically threatening me. When I talked to a manager about it, he wasn't any better. The story of an employee in MI, who was fired because he helped someone put out a fire is another perfect example of how backwards Meijer's management thinks. Instead of rewarding him for going above & beyond for a customer, they fire the man. The management clearly lacks common sense & is inflexible. That's okay, I will just shop at Walmart that much more. Their prices are better and they always take returns without a hassle.

Maybe that's why their stock prices are always high? Take a lesson Meijer. And btw, I have never seen an uglier looking store front, ghastly yellow. It took me a year, to get past that & go in.

What was the item/intems you were trying to return? And were you within the return policy timeframe or not? Some items aren't returnable. If you were trying to return such items or if you were outside of the stated return policy, then they were actually doing you a favor by allowing you to return the item(s). However without more details, no conclusions can be drawn.

Assistance at Self Service

I needed assistance at the self service check out because there was no number on the tag and was not found on the list. The employee told us that it's self service with an attitude.16 mile at Van Dyke Sterling Heights Michigan Meijer Grocery Store. I've been going to that store for over 20 years. Guess it's time to go to another store.

I don't use self checkouts unless they are the only lines open. If everyone did the same then the stores would get rid of them and hire more real cashiers.

I absolutely despise self service checkouts. If people keep using them some day retail stores will go the way of self serve gas stations. Trust me the prices will not be any cheaper.

We have shopped at Meijer since the early 1980s and I remember when they put these self serve lanes in a manager above the store level promised--promised us that they would always have at least one manned express lane open. Never happened and they still want to force you to use the self serve lanes. We refuse to use them and have left a cart with ice cream, etc in it anywhere in the store when the regular lanes were lined up with no manned express lanes open. The strange thing is that we will see Meijer employees bagging for people in the self serve lanes. Perhaps it hasn't dawned on Meijer that they could have a manned express lane open instead of having two people helping at the self serve aisle. All in all, more problems and frustrations with the self serve lanes. If Meijer wants to emulate the WalMart type of bad service, then they are doing a great job of it. Don't take it out on the employees---except Rick W. who lied to us---as they are doing what they are told to do.

Questionable "Accompanied by Gift Receipt" Return Policy

INDIANAPOLIS METRO AREA, INDIANA -- Thanks to all the people who have shared reviews on Meijer Company. In the spirit of fairness, I would like to add my "cents worth."

This posting is not meant to disparage the name and reputation of the Meijer company, but is rather to call into question a specific corporate policy that I believe demonstrates frank discourtesy toward the customer.

In general, I have been reasonably pleased with the quality of products and level of service provided by the local stores in my area. However, more recently I have noticed a decline in the quality of the apparel they carry, and am not pleased with their Christmas return policy.

My understanding is that when you receive a gift that is accompanied by a store's own original gift receipt, if you return the item with the receipt, the gift receipt has the record of how much the item cost, so that the full dollar amount of the returned item as listed on the receipt would be applied to the item exchanged. Not so at Meijer!

I received a sweater that was purchased at Meijer that needed to be exchanged for the correct size. This was not some frivolous return. I really wanted the item, but as a pre-Christmas sale item, it was out of stock, and would not be in stock. I waited until just a couple of days after Christmas to do the return, because I didn't want to waste so much time standing in line on the day after Christmas just for a single return.

When I brought the item and the receipt to customer service, I was told that it was okay to exchange it for anything else --well and good, so far. Imagine my shock and surprise when brought up something else for the exchange, and the value they credited to the exchange was just barely a couple of bucks! What they didn't immediately know, but I knew at the time was that I had purchased the same sweater for someone else (and during the same sale time as the person who purchased one for me!), so I knew, based on the date of the receipt, how much the item was sold for that week. The gift-giver paid nearly $15 for the item.

When I explained that I knew how much the gift-giver had paid for the item, and that it could be verified by the receipt date, I was told that didn't matter. I was informed that the policy for gift receipts --regardless of the date the item is purchased -- is to give the customer who returns an item the value of the "most recent sale price" on the item. So, when you are talking about something for Christmas, and you return the item after Christmas, you can may expect only a very small fraction of the price paid in return.

What an unjust return policy! Receipts are supposed to not only validate a purchase, but also serve as evidence of price paid! Not so at Meijer. Why even bother to request a gift receipt?

So now when I want to buy something for someone else as a gift at a Meijer store, I really think long and hard, and probably more than just twice. If it's someone I know well, who wouldn't be offended to see a price, I'll give them the regular receipt. Otherwise, I try to buy elsewhere.

In fairness to the company, I haven't purchased a gift for someone else at Meijer in many months. I hope that they have updated their gift receipt return policy so that they are in step with other retailers.

Interesting. The very first line of the Meijer's return policy states that ALL returns are subject to the most recent sales price.

I agree - I would take my business elsewhere. That is ridiculous.

Thats ludacris...and should be illegal. If you have a gift receipt, they have the codes and can pull up the transaction and see EXACTLY how much was paid for said item.....I wonder what happens if the item happens to have INCREASED in price....think Meijers would give you more money back? I HIGHLY DOUBT IT...If I were you Id call corporate and complain to them too. Thats got to be almost illegal.

They give you the "most recent sales price" as a return amount because, especially with apparel, the prices tend to be reduced over time, sometimes rather substantially. There is big profit in clothing and no one need pay the regular price on the tags as it will most likely be on sale and continually reduced over the next few weeks. I buy all my shoes and shirts at Meijer, but have never paid more than $12 for a pair of leather Nunn Bush shoes or $4-5 for a shirt that originally was marked $24 or so. It would be silly to pay regular price for much of anything. Meijer will exchange or refund up to 30 days with a receipt, but with a gift receipt they allow more time. Reasonable, as the item is a gift. Their policy is what it is. I like Meijer and highly recommend them over the rude, crude and inept WalMart.

Don't Trust Them

CALIFORNIA -- So, I go to check my balance on my debit card. Guess what? Somehow Meijer has stolen my whole check, plus others on Social Security here in CA. This is disgusting! How can they sleep at night knowing they took a disabled person's money in which they need to live on? I want this company shut down! This isn't fair. I hope you somehow suffer the way we are.

Oh by the way! Enjoy that nice juicy steak on me J/A.

What you describe sounds like a scam by people posing as customers at Meijers. I found reports of a few such incidents, but without further details it is hard to know if that is what happened in your case.

What makes you think that Meijers itself is involved? That would be very unusual.

all over the country there has been a rash of debit card numbers being stolen. the thief uses some type of device on the card reader that records the card number and sometimes the pin number.

Here in AZ, there was an issue at Bashas similar to this. A lot of people's information was stolen due to the systems being compromised by hackers. Bashas was not aware of the issue at first and I know that they had nothing to do with it. I doubt meijers has anything to do with this either. Unfortunately, this is a common issue nowadays. There are hackers and thieves who will do all they can to steal from innocent people.

I never use a debit card. I always use a credit card and pay off the balance each month. I am better protected and I do not have to worry about keeping track of each transaction.Using your debit card is like handing over your bank account.

Attitude of Meijer Employees

DETROIT, MICHIGAN -- I am an owner operator delivering goods/produce all over America. I have been at the Meijer warehouse for almost 7 hours trying to get unloaded, at 3 hours I asked whats going on why are trucks that came in after me unloaded and leaving before me and the woman receiver said "THATS THE WAY IT IS". I asked again and explained that it cost me money to sit and wait--she stated the same thing again. I then told her I would be leaving in 45 minutes that's 4hrs and taking the trailer back the 34mi to our warehouse and someone else could deliver it. well she hung up the phone as all this is on a phone in the guard shack. It wasn't 5 minutes when she called my cell and told me to back up to door 442 that was 4 hrs ago, and still I'm not unloaded, she did call my corporate office in Canada to complain--which they called my dispatch--who called me. I told them to fire me if I'm wrong--I was nice --I refused to get mad--but I have looked up the corporate officers HOME phone numbers as I am a retired collection agent sitting here in the truck thought I would call them tonight at about 11pm.

If they treat the people who deliver the good/produce this way why would I continue to spend my money at their store---about $250 a week.

You obviously were the victim of some lady promoted above her abilities. This happens with more frequency at Meijer and is part of why Meijer is having problems now.

It is very scary that you looked up the home phone number of someone and intend to harass them. Oh my goodness, to look up someone's home anything is disturbing. Actually it seems to me that you will actually be stalking and harassing them and in Michigan it is illegal. Why would you do such a thing to anyone? Your comments are scary.

NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS -- I was traveling E. on Route59 today, March 28th,2012, going at a normal speed when one of YOUR TRUCKS starts speeding up and was almost in the backseat of my car. We then came to a stoplight and I put on my brakes but noticed YOUR GUY wasn't slowing down, I looked in my side mirror and HE WASN'T PAYING ATTENTION TO THE ROAD AT ALL!!!!!! Two times this jerk almost plowed right into the back of me, I then moved over to another lane and noticed he was doing it to the now next car..... This guy better take a courtesy road test, or else GET OFF THE ROAD.

A very pi$$$ed off woman driver!!!!

Was there a "how's my driving?" sticker on the back of the trailer? I would have tried to get that and called the company. Usually stores like Meijer contract out their deliveries, so you'd be looking to complain to a 3rd party, I think.

Horrible possible shopping experience ever... All their employees seem to hate their job and are anything but nice or polite in any way. Also their employees can even be disrespectful and rude to the point that one abruptly yelled at me out of the blue in an obnoxious way, I even considered calling the cops and/or filing a lawsuit against the retailer.

Are you sure that you weren't in a Kroger? Sounds way more like a Kroger. My Meijer has much friendlier employees except for the guys who stock the shelves at night who are hot looking but very uppity.

MICHIGAN -- I was at the deli counter choosing a cheese and meat for my husband, he is very particular. The woman had an obnoxious tone with me as I made my selections. She then sliced my meat so thin it was falling apart (I asked for thick slices) and my cheese looked like half inch blocks (I asked for thin slices.) She was pricing these items and the bill came to $21, it should have been $11-$12. I asked for the manager. The woman said "You'll have to wait an hour she is on lunch." (Very snotty and rude). I walked about four feet away from the counter to see another woman in a blue shirt. This was the manager. Her name was Kathy and when I asked if she could help me she said "Can't you see I'm on my lunch break, talking to my boyfriend." There was another Meijer manager staning near her and the conversation I interrupted was vulger for a sales floor. As I am not interested in what sex position you prefer. I apologized for interupting but asked saying it would only take a minuteif someone could help. She said "Go find another manager who isn't on lunch and maybe gives a s>>> about your d>>> lunch meat." I was so angry and felt foolish so I left empty handed. Shame on you Kathy for treating a sixty-four year old woman with such disrespect!

Why would you feel foolish? You wanted your product your way and that is the way it should be.

I changed the time I shopped because I didn't like that particular team at my store, I started going earlier and the whole feel of the store is different.

I had a Walmart female employee call me a b**ch one time, it startled me and I giggled. The look on her face was priceless.

So I learned a lesson, and the lesson was they like it when you get upset. Giggling at them not so much, so I giggle a lot now.

Same here, just. I can tell you right now, I wouldn't have walked away. I would have spoken to the store manager on the spot.

I like shopping at night because there's a different atmosphere from daytime. But I don't want to be locked into that either. I might avoid certain cashiers, but I don't want to plan my shopping schedule around employees with attitudes. The store should know about this, as it could be costing them business.

ONLINE - GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN -- I ordered a sew machine for myself and daughter for Christmas. The machine for myself was never delivered some how it was lost by Fed-X. I called and clearly stated to just refund my 231.95, that was about a week before Christmas. Today is 12/30/2011 still no refund. I called again, the gentleman stated that the request was never sent. He stated that he would put the request in, he was politely rude.

This was my first time purchasing items from this company and I will never purchase anything from them again!!!!!!!!!

Working On Christmas Night

EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN -- It's a shame that people have to cancel their holiday plans because Meijer's Department Store is making their employees work on Christmas night. Hubby and I had plans and now have to cancel because he is working on this night. I can imagine that the store director is not working, nor the people in headquarters in Grand Rapids are working, nor any other manager who is not working on overnights.

You people have ruin Christmas for so many - maybe you should work Christmas night and see what it is like.

A lot of employees don't mind working Christmas. I work in a call center that is open 24/7 365 days a year. They ask for volunteers to work holidays. Every year, they get tons of people offering to work. Personally, I don't mind working Christmas. I get paid time and a half.

LS, when I worked in a market I would beg the guys that were married for their holiday time. Back then they paid triple time on holidays. No idea what they pay now. I could make as much in one double shift as I could make in a week and a half of regular pay.

Someone told me TRU is open 24/7 thru midnight Christmas eve? Hope all those workers are being paid something extra.

I do have to question what business is there out on Christmas night that has to be grabbed so bad as to alienate employees and pay the extra holiday time. Thanksgiving I get as the early Black Friday attack, but Christmas day..worse..night!?

That is retail in this day and age. It is a disease that has spread to stores I would have never dreamed of. Then again, back in the day there wouldn't be a store except one pharmacy every 25 miles or so open.

On this subject, I remember my brother seeing a used microwave for sale in the local newspaper, on *Christmas morning*. He called, and they said "come on over!". When we got there, the women visiting the home swooped away and wrapped it with paper and a bow.

That was our first microwave, which was a recent innovation at the time.

True Trm, back in the day the market I worked at was about all you could find open besides maybe a Denny's or a gas station. I worked at a 24 hour small market chain. Their claim to fame was they never closed. And they didn't for any holidays either.

Excuse me, not everyone celebrates christmas - not everyone can celebrate christmas - not everyone has a job - not everyone gets extra pay for holiday or overtime work.
I respect the personal disappointment and frustration, but the organization is serving an entire population, and if it is profitable, they will be open.

I wouldn't think there'd be a whole lot of people shopping on Christmas evening. Yes, you have those who don't celebrate Christmas, but unless they are having a huge sale, I can't see them making much money on that day.

The thing is, the store is closed and employees don't clock in until midnight...which means NO HOLIDAY PAY. We're forced to go in at that time to clearance out all the Christmas crap that didn't sell so when the doors open at 6
