Card Came 3 Weeks Later,my Refund Got Sent Back

I had my tax refund set up to get deposited onto my Netspend card. The card was ordered online the same day I filed my taxes. About 11 days later I saw on the IRS website that my refund was being direct deposited, before my card even arrived. I checked my account online and my balance was zero. So I called and they told me they had no record of an order. To make a long story short because they messed up by not sending my card out when they should have, my refund got sent back to the irs. So now I have to wait for a paper check. This is after calling Netspend every day for 5 days straight to find out when my refund would post(every time I called they said it post in 2 hours. When I finally called p###ed off on tues. Morning these idiots informed me they rejected the deposit because they couldn't verify my identity w/out a card. Now I received 2 cards from these idiots in the last 2 days.

I cut those suckers up and threw them out. I advise anyone w/ an ounce of common sense to stay as far away from Netspend as you can. There are so many other better debit card companies out there.

Fraudulent Charges on Account. Company Does Nothing to Protect Customers

AUSTIN, TX -- On 1/19 I received a text message stating that my paycheck had been direct deposited into my account an hour later I received a text message saying that my pin number had changed and if I had not requested this change to contact them.

I contacted them within seconds of getting this text message and reported this to the customer service agent who insisted that no changes to my pin had occurred and said to ignore it that it was an obvious error that he was looking at my account and that I had NOTHING to worry about. I was on the phone with this agent for about ten minutes freaking out and questioning why I was getting this message if NO change had occurred. Despite that he was assuring me that everything was fine I requested to change my pin number anyway and was transferred and then the line disconnected. I then checked the balance and learned that it was $1,000 less then what should have been in it and called right back obviously upset since I was just told to not worry about it.. The next representative told me YES there had been a change in my pin number followed by 4 transactions that equaled $1,000 not including the p2p charges and balance inquiry fees. I was left with a little over $30 in my account. I was told that the change to my pin number and fund transfers had occurred through their automated system WHILE I WAS ON THE PHONE with the 1st customer service agent who assured me to IGNORE IT.

My question was why did it not flag the first representative since I was telling him that I had received a text message stating my pin number had changed and reported at that time that someone was obviously accessing my account.

The representative was unhelpful almost reading from a script. I reported the fraudulent transactions within minutes of when they occurred and was given the run around, no one wanted to help me. I requested to have the funds held and stopped and was told repeatedly that there was NOTHING that they could do.. That they had NO WAY of knowing whose account the funds where transferred to.. I kept asking how can you not know who's account they went to if they were transferred through the automated system it went to another Netspend members account.. After an hour and talking to several customer service reps. floor supervisors and even the dispute department they all concluded that they could do NOTHING to help me, that I needed to write a dispute letter and fax it over which I did do.

My question was HOW could they change my pin number without having my security questions and no one would answer me. What I did learn is that going through the automated system to change the pin number it does prompt you to put in your current pin in order to change it HOWEVER if you don't know your pin number you can choose an option stating that you don't know it and it will prompt you to put in your social security number and bingo you can change it and have FULL ACCESS.. Not much security there is there.

I have since filed a report with the police department who tried to contact them and the customer service agents REFUSED to speak to them or transfer them to a supervisor because they wanted me to be there and I had already left the police station.

I called to verify that they received the fax and was informed by the dispute department that it can take up to 4 days to receive it.. yes you read that right FOUR DAYS ???
I have filed a complaint for identity theft and against the company for their practices with the Federal Trade Commission and a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.. At this point I am still being told there is NOTHING that they can do and that even though they can see that the funds went to another net spend members account that they cannot give me any information that its protected out of confidentially to protect the other member.. My response.. That's right protect the THEFT that stole my money while I was on the phone with the representative being told to ignore it that everything is fine.

I have since reported this to several friends that have used Netspend who have ALL closed their accounts for fear that this will happen to them and its obvious that they don't care about their customers otherwise they would be doing something to help retrieve the money that was fraudulently stolen and yet they are doing NOTHING..
I don't recommend this company there is NO security or protection, you have more security carrying large wads of cash in your wallet.

I have to ask. did you get an email that requested you check your account or that something happened to the account, and it had a link in it for your to click on so you can login and verify it? if so, your the one who gave the bad guys the pin number. you may have been phished with a phony email and phony website that looks like your bank but was not. and when you entered your info they captured it. it does not exclude that the bank needs to fix this, just that you need to be careful with emails. always log-in to the web site manually your self, don't rely on links in email.

No I never respond to emails I am always careful of things like that and routinely monitor my account. Who ever did it had access to my ssn and knew when my check would be coming in and took it right after. Whats frustrating is that I was on the phone with customer service stating that I received a text stating the change and was assured that I had nothing to worry about that it was obviously an error... To make matters worse is that the person who did this has a netspend account thats the only way to transfer the money from account to account and they are telling me that they have NO WAY to know who it went to that their system doesnt show them...

Not sure exactly what Netspend is... But they sound like they do business like PayPal. i.e. they're always getting hammered by scammers so their policies have narrowed down to "we'll make sure we don't get screwed, even if you do".

My sympathies to you. I have had my account number stolen three times in the past 2 1/2 years and trying to get compensation from Netspend is a nightmare! You are correct when you said that it seems as if the customer service rep is reading from a script. The last time the account number was taken was this weekend and the card was used in Great Britain! I was told by netspend that I need to contact the merchant ( again in Britain-I live in Texas and I can promise you that I did not take a quick trip to Birmingham in the north of England ) to have the charges removed. I have been left broke until my next paycheck whick will be deposited in a proper bank this time.

This is a copy of my compliant with BBB- Both my checking and savings account have been have been cleaned out!!! I immediately contacted them!!! An unauthorized account transfer often referred to as a P2P was sent to someone named Julie White. To make matters even worse, my savings account was zeroed out as well, with no explanation at all. I asked her how someone could access my access codes and she just said, " it will be reviewed and we will be in touch." That's it, that's all the response I received. I've been with them for 5 years. I've never had a problem ever before!!! I then asked her how long before I receive my funds back, I'm thinking 48 hours max... She response with, " it will be reviewed to see who is at fault," how is this happening to me? I don't understand how I can have $4700 go missing? She gave me a claim number, which she had to repeat to me three times, cause she barely spoke English!!!! I have like $80 to my name, hoping to find answers, I googled the problem and I was SHOCKED to find thousands of complaints about Netspend!!!!! How can the government allow this problem to continue? This isn't just the past 6 months,it's been going in for several years, people have lost everything due to this scam of a company!!! I have two questions 1. Why hasn't this been on national news? 2. Why is the government still allowing them to be in business?? This is a very sad day for me... I'm broke and I have two kids to feed!! Never mind the fact after reading all the overwhelming negative complaints of thousands of Americans that have been robbed of THEIR money... Never to see it again... I'm not very confident that I will ever see MY hard earned money again either... Please whoever reads these complaints... I beg you to stop this company!!!! It's not fair to sit back and allow hard working Americans to be cheated!!! Never mind the fact that thousands of disabled veterans and retirees are being taken advantage of!!! I promise you if I don't have my money back into my account by Wednesday 3/19/14... I will do everything in my power to bring down Netspend. I promise you this, I will have NO problem gaining support from every state in this country. I'm in the process right now of designing flyers to hand out at every tax place in my home town!!! I will dedicate every free minute I have to shutting them down!!!!

Netspend Is A Fraud!

WISCONSIN -- On 4/9/09 I arrived home to find a nice, new NetSpend Prepaid Visa in my mail. This would have been fine except for the fact that I did not apply for this card!

The letter enclosed said that a financial service provider and nationwide websites recommended me for this prepaid card. YEAH RIGHT!!!!!

I called their customer service line and got the runaround for about 20 minutes until I actually got a live person named "Joel" (who could barely speak English to boot) who then asked me for the card number for verification purposes & to close the account. Of course, I did not feel comfortable doing this, so I didn't. I advised her that I did not apply for this card, did not want the card, and was there an address that I could mail the card (cut up) back to the company. The representative then advised me that there was no such address & kept insisting that I give the card number.

I also plan on contacting the credit reporting agencies tomorrow and my Better Business Bureau.

It is illegal for a company to open a credit card in your name without authorization. It is a federal crime and a violation of the Truth In Lending Act. Report this to the Federal Trade Commission at http://www.ftc.gov/

Soaring, I agree with your referring them to the FTC, the only issue I have is you stating that it is illegal for the company to open a credit card without authorization. Netspend has an out as this is not a credit card. It is a prepaid visa card...there is no credit involved. These cards cannot be used until you add money.

To mnola, This is not the first complaint about cards being issued without having applied for it. For good measure even though these cards do not require credit checks, I'd still file a fraud alert with the credit reporting agencies... just to be sure that no other activity is initiated without you knowing about it. This company also claims to be a member of the Better Business Bureau. I'd file a complaint with them and see what the company's response to your inquiry will be.

The giving of a prepaid debit card that needs to be activated and has zero value unless you add money to it is probably not going to be considered fraud. Even if it was not requested, it is simply an advertising gimick. My son had a debit card issued by the college he attends, not requested, and that is how they would reimburse if he is ever owed a refund from the school. In that case they would load the card with money, he is supposed to activate it but has not yet - he owes so not really needed.

A Debit Card Nightmare!!!

Run from this company. Get away quickly and don’t come back. Be afraid..be VERY afraid. I am amazed that Netspend has not been recognized yet as a scam. I have never dealt with a more horrific organization in my life. We received 6 $50 cards from a relative as gifts for our children. Not realizing that they needed to be used within a certain time, (they did not include the T’s and C’s with the cards) we held onto them a while before activating. When we called to activate them, we were told that charges had incurred on the cards amounting to more than HALF the original balance of $300. After 2 or more hours and speaking with no less than 4 agents and 2 managers, they finally reinstated the original balance. Also, they charge you for EVERYTHING they can think of. They charge for using the card. They charge for NOT using the card (within a certain time). They even charge to get the card’s balance over the phone.

Get this…I called the toll free number to get the balance on the cards. The automated person said there would be a .50 charge to get the balance and that if I use the website, there would be no charge.

So I quickly hung up the phone before I received the balance and went immediately (within 5 minutes) to the website. There it was, the .50 cent charge. Just on principal, I called them up and had the .50 removed.

Most gift cards are like this. Comapnies make a fortune on them. Why not give cash? With cash don't pay to get the cash (other than the cash amount), you don't pay to use the cash, you don't have an expiration date on cash, etc... Gift cards are really a stupid idea for consumers but a smart idea for companies.

Someone Stole Over $600 Dollars From Me

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS -- On March 12, 2014 at 7:02am $55.00 was deducted from my Netspend account. 7:36am an additional $55.00 was deducted out of my account. I called Netspend only to find that the call center didn't open till 8am. 7:48am $125 deducted from my account. 8am I call Netspend and inform them of fraudulent activity and that purchases were being made from my card that I have PHYSICALLY in my hand in Miami, Florida and I am PHYSICALLY located in Chicago, IL. Netspend response is that the transactions that were made are currently pending and wait 24 hours to dispute the charges.

8:48am $125.00 deducted from my account.11:08am $87.10. I call Netspend and inform them of an additional charge that has been made. Same previous response was given.

11:25am $55.00 deducted from account. I call Netspend to request they block the card immediately and send a new card. I assumed that I was going to be sent a new card.

Today is 3/14/ 2014
I called in to Netspend to review information about my card because I can't even check my account online. I asked several times to speak with a supervisor because the representative obviously didn't understand that I HAVE NEVER SET FOOT IN MIAMI FLORIDA. Also, she asked did I spend $250 dollars at a gas station? My response," I DON'T OWN A JET."

I sent in a dispute letter as told and then told an investigation will be determined after 10 business days.

I was saving almost 1,000 dollars for one special day. I have been with my husband for over 6 years, married only 2. The first year married he was overseas. This is basically my 1 year anniversary. However, some disgusting dog had easy access to my information and now netspend is making me suffer.

I have heard a lot about this happening with netspend. I do not use that card, i got one in the mail but i would NEVER activate it. I use my bank card. I would never trust a site like this with a big check any ways....They are a scam and i think people who work for them steal peoples info and spend money on their cards. Not the first complaint i have heard about this.

Personally, I am all about using credit cards and paying in full each and every month. I get the 100% free use of other people's money, protection from fraud, and cash rewards.

Using a debit card connected with my bank I don't like to do, because that connects companies directly with my cash.

Just my 0.02 - I swear by credit cards, and can't imagine placing my cash at risk.

Well i cant use a credit card so a debit card is my second option. But i dont use it a lot, i mostly use cash. But its a good way for me to keep track of my money far more than one of those prepaid cards like netspend who charge stupid fees to use them.

CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND -- Did my taxes through TurboTax on 2-23-14 had my refund put on a Netspend card got the card in a timely manner but after trying to activate it there was a problem with my account. So I called customer service and they had my account blocked they told me they needed information to be able to release my tax money they wanted copes of my SS card, utility bill, drivers licenses, birth certificate. Now I have done my tax for yrs through turbo tax and always had my refund applied to there card offers I have NEVER had any problems with getting my money or had to submit my personal info I just don't give that information out so y now with Netspend do they request this. Good piece of advice DO NOT APPLY YOUR TAX REFUND TO NETSPEND CAUSE YOU WONT GET IT BACK!!!!!!! I am now filing a complaint with the FDIC and hope that will get me somewhere. �,�,�,�,�,

I Want To Know Why [You] Are Keeping My Money.

AUSTIN, TEXAS -- Recently I received my tax return on a net spend card I've been using my card then a week ago they [froze] my money. I faxed the proof of id ss # and what I have with my name and address on it . They then still claim the proof of mailing address isn't good enough when its from child support and state tax board . They are keeping my money and I am tired of this . I'm not going to just walk way it's my money . How can I file a complaint on the company net spend

What is from child support? What is from state taxes? If you owe both of those they can freeze your federal tax return and there would be nothing that Netspend could do about it.

Netspend probably gave you a return loan and thought when your return actually came in they would get their money. If you owe (child support, state taxes,student loans etc.) they will come after your federal return and take it from there.

WILLIAMSTON, NORTH CAROLINA -- I'm in on the lawsuit. My card has been blocked since the 14 of February after having it only one day. I sent these people important documents across the web verifying myself and after talking to several people with little English, they still won't unblocked my card. Its very stressful when I have three to kids to feed and I'm currently living with a friend in a two bedroom home. This is the only income I have rite now an I was depending on this money for a lot of reasons and this company just cause me a major set back.

I received the following email from NetSpend the other day:

Thank you for ordering a NetSpend Card. We want to get your card to you as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, your card was returned as undeliverable. To make sure you get your card, we need updated address information.

Hard to call NetSpend a scam just because they sent the card and it was returned as undeliverable. Perhaps you should call the number they gave you and clear this up? Just a thought.

Stay Away From Netspend With Your Tax Refund!!!

AUSTIN, TEXAS -- Too many charges. Used them for my tax refund they charged me 5.95 for the deposit, 1.00 for every transaction, 2.50 for ATM with a minimum of 325.00. at the gas pump they hold 100.00 if you pay at the pump! They charge to file a debit card complaint and a phone inquirer of your balance! Your best bet is to get a secure credit card and build or rebuild your credit!!! Customer service is some over seas agent very hard to understand except how much it will cost you!!

Or, you could do the normal thing and open up a bank account and have the refund direct deposited into your savings or checking account.
