Billing problems
Posted by on
NY, NEW YORK -- I am currently pregnant with my first child. As part of my regular prenatal check up, I have to go through a battery of ultrasounds and blood works and one of which is the Ultra Screen offered by NTD laboratories. It is screening for chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus like Down Syndrome. At the Maternal Fetal Medicine department of Lenox Hill Hospital in NY, I was told that NTD labs did not accept my insurance and I had to pay $160 upfront.

This was in January 2008. In March, I received a bill from NTD Laboratories. So I called the hospital and they told me that the payment was forwarded to the laboratory. So I called the laboratory. I kept asking the operator to connect me to the billing department and since March, I have yet to speak to an actual person because I always end up with voicemail. I left my number many times and not once have they tried to contact me. I called my insurance company and found out that this laboratory is in-network and that they have forwarded payment of ANOTHER $160. So now, NTD LABORATORIES HAVE GOTTEN MONEY FROM ME AND FROM MY INSURANCE. Meanwhile, their billing department is completely out of reach.

IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT A LOT OF THEIR CLIENTS ARE PREGNANT WOMEN WHO HAVE TO DEAL WITH THEIR BS! I hope hospitals get wind of this complaint and stop sending their samples to this laboratory- NTD LABORATORY INC.

I hope you get your money back. As an aside, you don't have to have those tests when you are pregnant. I didn't have the CVS, triple screen or amniocentisis. There was no way anyone was sticking a needle into my pregnant belly!!! Good luck to you and your baby.

Oh my god! I have the same situation. NTD keeps sending me a bill for $160 for the same tests that were done with Maternal Fetal Assocaites. I went online to NTD's website where you can provide your insurance and gave all info but they are still billing me. I bet they got paid by my insurance company and is still trying to bill me to get double paid.

I am amazed that you ladies are fighting this on your own. If the doc wrote the lab orders and sent you off to find a lab on your own, file a complaint at the lab. If the doctor performed the tests and sent off the samples and specimens to NTD because h contracts with them for lab services, force the doctor to help you. In the latter case, the doc will have contact info you won't have access to. Remember, folks, you have a choice as to who provides laboratory, radiographic, or other tests.
