Voted Worst Company of the Year Award
Posted by Sherry1009 on 01/16/2006
KENNETT SQUARE, PENNSYLVANIA -- I purchased a silver San Marco bracelet for my stepdaughter for Christmas. Upon opening the bracelet, the clasp that holds the bracelet in place broke. I initiated a return via online under my account on 12/29/2005. I received a rude email stating that I didn't provide them with the return information that was necessary to process my return on 12/31/2005 even though my email had been pasted at the bottom of their email and it clearly stated that the bracelet was broken and I wanted a replacement. I replied as such on 1/1/2006 and received an apology on 1/2/2006 stating that I would receive a return authorization within 2-4 days and a credit on my card, but not a replacement. Keep in mind that their return policy states that all returns must be received at their warehouse by 1/10/2006. I initiated another return but received no reply.

On 1/10/2006 I emailed again asking where my return authorization was and were they waiting for 1/10/2006 to pass so they could claim I didn't return the merchandise to them by the 1/10/2006 deadline. I received the standard autoemail, someone will respond to your email in 24 hours. It's now 1/17/2006, no one has replied or sent me a return authorization since I received the initial apology on 1/2/2006.

I strongly suggest no one buy from this company. Their policies are the worst I have ever seen. The quality initially looks good, but when you put it on is clearly defective. I never would have seen that the clasp was made too small and would snap upon closing unless I tried it on in the store. Then on top of that you have to deal with rude and lying customer service representatives.

Overstock announced just today that they are partnering with a firm to handle their returns. It will be interesting to see if they get any better. I sure wouldnt want to be the guinea pig though.

***DO NOT BUY FROM OVERSTOCK.COM***
Posted by Tufop on 08/14/2004
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS --
My wife entered an order incorrectly and I was not allowed to cancel the order and re-order the correct item 10 minutes later.

Overstock.com mclaims orders are instantly processed so their web site's claim that an order can be cancelled before it has been processed is misleading and allows Overstock.com to charge you restocking fees for something ordered by mistake or if you return damaged goods.

OVERSTOCK.COM sells many items but also makes sure they make money off you if you want to cancel an order or return damaged goods.

Is this a company you want to do business with?

If you have ordered from OVERSTOCK.COM and not had any problems consider yourself lucky. The stories of unfair and misleading business practices are all over the Internet if you time the time to look.

yah they wanted to charge mr for restocking fees when thye sent me the wrong item, i told them i was not responsible for their mistakes and i was not paying for a restocking fee and let me talk to a manager - also i would dispute the charges with my credit card company.
they never pulled your order, so they should not charge you for something they never did.

Do NOT buy from Overstock.com - NEVER use for gifts. I just found out that there is a $5 "restocking" fee on every item. I bought cufflinks for $18.99 as a gift. Person didn't like them. When I went to return, I was told of $5 "restocking" fee. That restocking feel is a joke. So, $18.99, less the $2.95 original shipping, the $4.00 to send back AND the $5.00 restock fee means I get back less than half the cost of the item. What is so WRONG is that lothing, shoes, etc. that don't fit - or gifts that need to be returned are NOT exempt. ONLY if the item is broken is the fee not applied. This is WRONG for an online service - they don't pay for retail space, sales salaries, etc. And we CAN'T try on item - because its an INTERNET service. This is wrong.

Bait and Switch
Posted by Adjiii on 01/13/2013
I ordered five 4 packs of Axe deodorant to put into care packages for Christmas. Overstock sent me 5 individual sticks. Then, they said they will send the right amount out. They sent 5 sticks again, and closed the customer service complaint as "buyer remorse"! They have since changed the description of what I ordered. Even their customer service gave me a link to the exact product I ordered, copy and pasted the description into the body of the e-mail, but manipulated it to make it look like the description was for what they sent me. Bait and switch tactics, and bad customer service. DISHONEST!

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS -- I recently purchased several DVDs from this company. I went to the site after making my purchase just to check the status of my order and could not find my order. Well I had to send several messages to this company after my payment had posted. I was receiving emails that were automated not from a specific person. I also called the phone number to this company, given to me by my credit card company. There were prompts as if someone was actually going to get on the phone. Every prompt turned out to be the same voice mail message from someone who represented the company. I had to leave a message. Well after that I received my merchandise and I began to watch them and they were not what I ordered well to top that off you can't receive a refund according to the invoice statement. I will never ever buy anything from this company again they are not business oriented.

You had to watch them to determine they were the wrong videos? Did you read the labels? You will not be able to successfully dispute the charge on the open packages.

I am not disputing the transaction but I did notice that the movies were not what I ordered when the package arrived. I just know I will never deal with this company again.

Luvlee,

I am reaching out for you again. Email me so we can resolve your issue. I find it hard to believe you ordered from us, we charged your card, you received the wrong stuff and you are ok with it. I would not be ok with that. I would want my money back or at least the right product.

I know there have been several competing sites that have been posted fake reviews like your and hope your review is not one of them. My understanding is the other adult sites are upset that we offer the same DVDs they do for a fraction of the price.

Again, if you are real and have a complaint I WILL refund your money or correct you product. Which ever solution is your choice. Email me to resolve this.

Posted by trmn8r on 2011-02-15:
I use IAFD.com to research movies, and they have links in each title to sellers who list the title. I have never had a problem with any of the sellers I found there. And when you go to the seller's site, you'll be able to search for other titles. IAFD has reviews on many movies, and is really a raincoater's treasure trove of information.

I've never set foot in an adult bookstore, except when we had high school students up in Provincetown. I think they dared the chaperones to go inside. Now that I think about it, I think the students were there with us. It was a quick in and out.

Overstock.com - Did they know all along they sent the wrong item? Bait and Switch!
Posted by Rascal on 11/12/2007
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Bought a $490 torchiere lamp from Overstock & was thrilled when I arrived home to a large box on the porch. Thrilled that is, until I opened the box and found it wasn't what I ordered.

BTW I wouldn't have even opened the box if there was some indication, say a taped on packing slip, a photo on the outside of the box that would have provided a clue to what was inside. According to Overstock I should have refused delivery on an expected item in an unmarked box. Seems Oversuck has psychic powers far beyond mine, they can see into unmarked boxes across the country and know upfront the customer shouldn't have opened the box on delivery. I did find it odd, on a fairly expensive item there was NO packing slip outside or inside the box.

At first I gave O the benefit of doubt, but in re-reading my chat transcripts, several emails, I'm confident they knew that they sent out. Similar to the other stories here, customer orders an expensive item - O sends the wrong item and makes their return process ridiculous leaving the customer to either accept the item or deal with O for months.

Real life & Live chat = 20 minutes for the bot to determine my name and address. The live chat replies seem copy and paste.
me: "when will the correct item be sent?"
them: If we do not receive the original item within 30 days, we will charge your credit card for the full price of the replacement item.
me: hello? (5 minutes pass)
me: hello? so when will the correct item be sent?
(10 minutes pass)
them: "Can you please confirm your zip code?"
me: "Again, my zip is 12345, when will the correct item be sent?" (3 minutes pass)
them: We are aware you didn't receive the correct item, the item you ordered is no longer in stock"
me: The item I ordered is still listed for sale on the site...
(4 minutes pass)
them: The item ordered is out of stock.
me: OK, so if the item I ordered isn't available can you send out the identical table lamp and refund me the difference? (2 minutes pass)
them: "unfortunately, we are only able to exchange items for the exact same size and color if the item is received damaged. We do not allow substitutions."
me: Yet I received a substitute lamp .. this isn't what I ordered and the value of the item sent is $200 less than what I've already paid (8 minutes pass)
At 8 minutes 30 seconds in waiting for a reply, I ended the chat session.

It doesn't end there though.. 2 weeks of back & forth customer is always wrong emails, live chat and phone banter with no resolution. BTW The O bot promised a return label within 2 business days.. On day 8 after 4 emails I received an illegible UPS return label. When I say illegible, it had nothing to do with my printer, the font used ran together like blowhole snot.

From reading the other reviews posted here, bait and switch seems to be the norm.

UPDATE November 23, 2007: Overstock sent me an email to review the product sent (evidently they are that clueless) ... so I put my experience with O on the review. I was polite, no cursing. no bashing - just the facts & lo and behold my review is not published on the O site for the item I purchased. Funny thing is, I clicked on the link to leave a review & the site says my review has already been published. Uh huh. My rating must have fallen off their site just like the item I ordered.

Overstock = 2 words > never again.

Overstock.com slow shipping
Posted by Cjs9473 on 02/14/2006
Thought this is about a small purchase (under $15), it still irks me! First let me state that I purchase many things over the internet, so I know from experience that I have a legitimate gripe because I never waited so long for an item. I purchased the book "Small Steps" by Louis Sachar for my daughter, who was anxiously awaiting it. It supposedly shipped on January 20. Now I know that media mail can sometimes be slow, but I have received and sent things via media mail and never waited more than 7 or 8 days. After waiting for my daughter's book for the requisite 15 business days, I sent Overstock.com 3 emails asking when I can expect a credit since I never received the book. In the meantime, I bought the book at a store because I felt bad that my daughter was disappointed day after day. It took 3 days to get a response from overstock, and they stated that they would have to do a trace, blah, blah, blah. Well, I checked the tracking today, and now my book is in New Jersey and is enroute. I think that it was never really shipped on the 20th, but was shipped after I sent the email after the three weeks were up. I'm not even going to deal with sending it back to them after some of the complaints I've read about people trying to get credit from them, I'll sell it on ebay and lose a couple bucks instead. I will never order anything from them again, I'll stick with buy.com for books!

Do you have any proof that they didnt ship it unitl after you e-mailed them? I doubt it. Sometimes the mail takes awhile. It once took me 4 days to recieve a piece of mail that was sent from an 1.5 hours away! I think perhaps your real complaint should be against the postal service (or lack there of as the case may be).
Posted by retired on 2011-12-08:
then the company selling the item should say their shipping can take longer... right now I am peeved, Ordered 2 tiny stick of memory for a computer, they said they mailed it the same day I ordered it, 7 days ago... at early in the morn... 7 days later nothing,,, it could have been dropped into a frakin envleope and delivered in less time.. and I live in a major city in California,, not out in the sticks...

just frakkin slow usps... slow delivery service they use,, and the tracking number isn't even tracking, thats a lie,, it will only give you delivery confirmation...

shipping should be better for small things that fit in your pocket,, they should not take the time it take ships to cross oceans..

Overstock is a scam
Posted by Shelbygirl on 10/13/2005
NORTH CAROLINA -- I purchased a Futon and Mattress for $359.99 from Overstock at the end of July 2005. I was never able to track the package. After multiple calls to CS and 3 weeks later, I received 2 of the 3 boxes. The boxes were damaged beyond belief. The delivery driver advised this was only half of the futon frame and he didn't know when the other half would be delivered. I inspected the 2 packages and the wooden frame was badly chipped and gouged, and the mattress had a 3" cut in the middle. I refused both boxes per customer service. The 3rd box was delivered 1 week later. I called CS and was advised I would get shipping information by e-mail to return the third package. I tried for a month to return this package and get a refund. I called customer service every week for over a month. Six weeks later I get a e-mail stating they will refund me $20 and I could have store credit because I had not returned the 3rd box!!! I reported them to the BBB. On 9/26/05,Overstock responded to the BBB stating they would give us a full refund and we didn't need to return the 3rd box. It's now 10/13/05, I still have NO REFUND!! I have called CS two more times and now I'm told they can only E-Mail Accounting. They have NO WAY of calling!! What a bunch of BULL!!! I have responded back to the BBB. I hope they will be able to do something. PLEASE warn everyone you know to NOT BUY from this company. I know I have learned my lesson.

Bait and Switch - inferior laptop delivered
Posted by Srg37 on 11/29/2012
Product Details said Lenovo laptop Standard Memory was 4 GB; Maximum Memory of 8 GB. A "Features" box at the bottom of the Product Details listing said "Computer Memory - 8 GB." The listing certainly implied that the version they were selling had been upgraded to 8 GB of memory, in which case it was the best deal I could find on Black Friday. Laptop received only has 4 GB of memory. As far as I'm concerned, they advertised one product and shipped an inferior product. They have offered to refund my money, but since the other Black Friday deals I passed on in favor of Overstock.com are over, I'm screwed.

In a laptop, those extra 4g are pretty much irrelevant. If the deal was good, I wouldn't lose sleep over the extra memory, you'd likely never even use it.
Posted by Old Timer on 2012-11-29:
RAM is not that expensive right now. See if they will give you the extra 4GIG for free or at their cost? I remember Overstock does sell replacement and upgrade RAM. How much and for what? Not sure about their selection. If not, try a 2nd market and used memory dealer. You may be able to upgrade at a minimal expense.

This does not get OS off the hook for a poor job of selling, just an option. If you like the laptop , I would keep it and upgrade the RAM.
Posted by Bill on 2012-11-29:
Tell them to send you a 4gb chip or two 2gb chips if your machine will accept that configuration.
Ram is farely cheap. You should be able to get 4gb for less than $100.00.
If they refuse tell them to refund you $100.00.
Posted by madconsumer on 2012-11-29:
if the laptop is going to be used for video, gaming, or graphic art, the extra 4gb of memory is extremely valuable.

sure sounds like a bait and switch to me.

It does sound like false advertising, or a mistake. How to determine the difference?

One thing it is not, and that is bait and switch. That is a different animal. I can see how you felt you were baited and switched though.

Made in the USA...Not!
Posted by Summerset on 01/09/2011
We attempt to buy products made in America whenever possible. When needing to replace our coffee maker, we did research on the Internet and Overstock.com advertised a Cuisinart coffee maker as being "made in the USA." We ordered it, and upon receipt the box clearly indicated that it was made in China. Just to be certain, we contacted Cuisinart customer service and were told that "all our products are made in China." Disappointed, we wrote a negative review on Overstock's site. This review was never posted. We contacted Overstock customer service and they agreed to accept the return of this product without additional shipping charges to us (hence the 1 star). We asked the very polite and helpful customer service representative from Overstock to have this Cuisinart coffee maker and all other Cuisinart products (and there were a number of them under the coffeemaker section alone) removed from their "made in the USA" designated list. Approximately a month later this coffee maker (Cuisinart DTC-975 ) along with at least another 6 Cuisinart coffee makers are still being touted as "made in the USA." I would doubt if many, if any, of the products they advertise as "made in the USA" actually are. It just seems like an underhanded way of moving some merchandise and taking advantage of the American consumer's desire to bring/keep business in the USA.

According to what I just googled, all Cuisinart products made after 1992 were made in China, except for the occasional glass caraffe or lid that was made in Germany. The food processors made before 1992 were made in Japan or France.

I guess Overstock did not receive the memo.
Posted by trmn8r on 2011-01-09:
How shabby. I read some things about Overstock that turned me off to the idea of ever ordering from them, followed by the "O O O" holiday commercials which just made me angry.

It this company has a "Made in USA" product list, they have to maintain and update it. That's just wrong, but I'm not surprised to hear this company behaves in this manner. Very helpful review.

The Worse Return Policy
Posted by LN0704 on 03/30/2009
Overstock.com has a convoluted and inconvenient return policy. I purchased two items and needed to return both because the items didn't fit. However, their return policy does not allow multiple returns. If you decide to print their prepaid label, you will need to print two separate ones for each return, return them in two separate boxes, and PAY TWICE! Or you can return the items yourself by going to the post office or UPS, BUT will still need to contact them with the return tracking number! I have never experienced anything more inconvenient and absurd. You would think as an online company, they would make the return policy more straightforward.

They have just lost a customer and if I were you I would think twice before ordering more than one item unless you are completely satisfied and have no plans to return them.

I would really think twice about ordering anything from them that there was any possibility of having to return. After a quick look at their return policy, not only do you have to pay for the return postage, but they charge you a $4.95 restocking fee.
