Please help get out of a contract at TERRIBLE Riviera Fitness
Posted by on
So, I joined Riviera Fitness strictly to take MMA Classes. Upon being injured, I was told they could only "freeze" my account. Now, I'm pregnant and since that's not a permanent disability, they won't let me out of my contract.

How were you able to get out of your contract? I don't care if I have to pay a fee, I just want to be DONE WITH THEM. Please help!

Don't let them tell you there's no way out ambermma. They don't make it easy, but there is always a way out.

Calculate how much time has gone by since you signed up at the gym. Most gym franchises and states allow you to get out of a gym contract without penalty within a certain number of days after you enroll. Check with your county's Department of Consumer Affairs for the Civil Code relating to gym contracts. Some stipulate conditions under which you can get out of a gym contract and receive a refund even after the initial cancellation period has passed.

Search for the cancellation clause in your membership contract. Depending on the gym franchise, the cancellation fee might be manageable or waived entirely, particularly if you have a specific reason to get out of the gym contract like a medical disability or if you've moved out of the area.

Speak to a manager or call the gym's headquarters or parent company to discuss the gym membership cancellation if you're not making headway in person. Present the reasons why you need to break the gym membership and mention any Civil Codes you've uncovered to support your case.

Submit a cancellation letter when you do break a health club contract and retain a copy for your records. Indicate the date you joined, the reason you need to get out of the gym contract, your final date and the action you expect the gym franchise to take (such as halting the automatic withdrawals from your checking account or monthly charges on your credit card.) Also include the names of any health club employees that you talked to during the cancellation process. Send it by registered mail.

HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA -- In response to the review on Paramount Acceptance and Riviera Fitness Center, all the information given in the review is false. First, she said she was not ever notified that the gym was closing. The gym posted signs all over the gym saying the closing date one month in advance AND the gym sent letters of notification to every single member. Second, she said that the gym she was transferred to was 40 miles from her house. The gym she was transferred to is only 2 miles from the gym she joined at! Third, she said the gym she transferred to does not offer tanning. Every member with tanning has been allowed the opportunity to cancel the tanning portion of their membership. Riviera did not do anything unethical in the closing of that location when their lease ended.

I think members should have been given the option of canceling their memberships when the gym decided to move. They signed a contract with an address on it, right?

Well said Sarah May

Something here's not adding up.

Two very different stories indeed...however I agree with Sarah May. Many poeple join a particular gym for its location, ambience, people, structure, etc. To be transferred and told you have to go to another facility is not acceptable. Anyone that has stepped foot in various Bally's or chain fitness centers knows that they drastically very on equipment, personnel and how things are ran in general.

#1, we were told by Riviera that the gym was temporarily closing to relocate down the street, not permamently. #2 I never received anything by mail. #3 My rate has not decreased due to tanning, I was told to go to one of the other locations to tan. #4 The old gym was 25 minutes from my house, straight shot down the highway this one is 40 minutes. Your 2 miles is bird's fly distance, not actual road distance.

Paramount Acceptance is a NIGHTMARE: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/347/ripoff0347846.htm

Don't join a Riviera Fitness spa or gym. They are poorly managed and there is no clear avenue for getting problems resolved.

It is company policy to not give customers contact information for their corporate headquarters. Shady. Just shady.
