Don't Buy Sears Appliances Over The Phone
By -

NATIONAL -- I brought a water heater and installation via Sears's 1-800-877-6420 service. I also (foolishly) brought a three-year service agreement. The local contractor installed a different model than the one I ordered. This created a difference between what I owed and what I paid. That's one reason to need an invoice or statement of charges. I also need it to get reimbursed by the owner of the house and to supply for the record of investments to the house.

I never succeeded over numerous telephone calls to get anyone to send me either a statement or the terms of my service contract. (It's the biggest scam in the world to verbally sell a service contract at the point of purchase and not provide documentation so that when the time comes to exercise the contract the purchaser has forgotten all about what he or she is entitle to under it.) Half the people I talked to were illiterate or incompetent.

Some people could find my purchase record, others, in the same office on the same day, could not. Some were illiterate, some were helpful, some assured me that the statement would come. My credit card company, Citibank, won't consider this an item in dispute because I received the water heater and installation. So Sears can charge whatever they want and if their records are too screwed up to back it up or do it accurately you have no recourse but to pay up.

Defective Water Heaters
By -

I purchased a Sears 50 gallon water heater in 2007 with a 5 year service contract. On 8/28/11 it stopped working and I called for service. When the technician came on 8/30, the part was defective and caused a flashback explosion in my basement that blew off the flue pipe of the water heater. Although the technician claimed a part would be FedEx'd to me overnight, that never happened. I am still waiting for the part that is on back order for the entire Sears in the entire US. I'll be lucky if I get hot water by next week. I would never repeat this experience. Instead I would get a water heater from a reliable local plumber who would have an interest in installing and repairing it properly.

Take your life in your hands!!

I had my hot water heater installed for 2 1/2 months. While taking a shower, I noticed no hot water. It was August, I could deal. I heard a loud piercing sound and running feet. My wife told me the smoke alarm was going off and there were flames coming out of the hot water heater. I turned off the hot water heater (still in a towel) and immediately called the 800 number on the tank. We need someone here right away.

After two disconnected calls, my last one of 51 minutes proved to be the most successful. After being transferred to tech support, parts, lawn and garden, customer service, I was told that it would be NINE days until I could get someone out. I asked for the supervisor, **, and it was confirmed, NINE days. I explained Fire, Smoke and the family outside on the lawn for their safety, and Joshua explained there was nothing he could do. I did have a Wonderful sympathetic representative on the phone with me, **. She even fought with the heater guy on my behalf, and still nothing!!!! It will be a cold day in HELL before I buy a Sears product again!!!

Sears Won't Help Hurricane Ike Victims

ORANGE, TEXAS -- The short and the long of it is that I was told by the Sears water heater warranty dept., that if your water heater gets water in it, the repair is not covered by the warranty. I only found this out after waiting 4 days for the repair person to come out to my house. He estimated that the cost including parts and labor would be $242.00. After numerous called to Sears, I sent him packing. I think the poor guy would have actually fixed the heater for me under warranty, but he told me that they are being watched like hawks by Sears.

So, my family is bathing by boiling a pot of water, which we place in the tub, then dipping the water with a paper cup while standing under the cold shower. Of course, we are also washing work clothes, etc., in cold water. I am a widow on a fixed pension income. I cannot afford to buy a water heater. Oh, by the way, my home owners insurance will not pay either. My county officials are going the same routine of fighting with insurance company's about whether or not the damage to our county was caused by flooding or wind driven rain. This country has gone to hell during the last 8 years. Read what you will into that statement.

Service contract a sham
By -

CALIFORNIA -- I have a Kenmore water heater and was talked into a service contract. This would have been good news because the water heater burst while within the service contract period. I was further comforted by the tag on the water heater which says, "Call before noon... We'll be out the same day." Well, this is day SEVEN and still no water heater. Worse yet, I am told it will be another week before they have the unit I need. Meanwhile, TWO WEEKS without hot water. No one at Sears seems to care and customer service is useless. NEVER AGAIN... Sears has really gone down hill.

Water heater/installation

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE -- Purchased Sears best hot water heater. If it is the best I would hate to see the worst. After very short shower tepid water to shave. Installation was guaranteed next day. (Actually guaranteed that day if purchased before noon.) Installer called & said he would be there between noon & 4:00. Arrived at 7:30 and hooked it up at 9:20 p.m. Had to return the next day to have installation comply with codes. Sears did not give me the courtesy of returning my phone calls. They just don't care & I have 7 major Sears appliances in my house. No more!!

Sears Water Heater Installation Scam
By -

SAN BRUNO, CALIFORNIA -- I recently paid $800 for a new water heater from Sears which included $300 installation fee. As if that wasn't enough, when the delivery man came to install it he charged me an EXTRA $303 to "bring it up to code", so the total price of the water heater is now $1,100! What a scam. The alterations needed were VERY minor.

While the agreement says additional charges might occur to bring things up to code it is still MUCH MUCH cheaper to have a local plumber install it. However SEARS and its sales people make big bucks fleecing customers by having these scam installations where you get nickeled and dimed for using their services. My advice NEVER use a SEARS installer. You will be charged MUCH MUCH more than is reasonable.

Water Heater Repair
By -

HAYWARD, CALIFORNIA -- I have been a customer of Sears for a long time and lately this company has gone down to the pits when it comes to service. About 10 months ago we bought a water heater (gas) and the thing did not work. A Sears repairperson came out to our home and told us that the controls were messed up and he would send out for new ones and we would receive them via mail in two to three days. Well after two weeks they came out and put another water heater in. Now here it is 10 months later and this one is leaking through the emergency valve.

The so-called repairperson gives me the same line that I would receive the part in a couple of days and that he would install it. Guess what? Here it is another week later and no new part and water still leaking. There has to be something that we customers can do about this situation. I guess Sears has forgotten about all the companies that have gone bottom up in these past few years. I for one will not buy another Sears product. This insurance thing is a scam to rob us customers.

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA -- I purchased a water heater. Then contractor called me and said it was the wrong kind for my home. Then I cancelled order because they would not be able to get the right one for me for 4 days. Meanwhile I had to pay before anything was done. Trying to get a cancellation receipt and now they tell me that won't happen for 5-7 days. What a crock. NEVER WILL I EVER BUY ANYTHING FROM SEARS...

Sears Fleeced Me

COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA -- Sears forced me to pay $163, in advance, for the repair of my hot water heater. The repairman never showed up and I was forced to pay a plumber to make the repair, late at night, on a Friday (water was POURING out of the water heater). Sears refuses to refund my money.
