Paid Way Too Much for Windows and Doors

ELIZABETH, COLORADO -- Let me state that my failure to have done my homework on replacement windows and doors before we had a salesperson contact us was the reason we overpaid significantly on this project. I also fell for the lure of discounts if we sealed the deal that evening. I still can't believe I committed such a rookie mistake after all these years. My husband was doing the math as we were talking and the price we thought we were agreeing to was not the final price, which was $7500 more than we realized. The salesperson couldn't print out a contract then and there because he had no printer. Why we were deers in the headlights will always be a mystery to us.

The big lesson here is my husband and I—highly educated, critically thinking, take no crap people—fell for the banana in the tail pipe. The windows are very nice. The installation team was great. And I will never do business with Sears again. And they should go out of business, as they deserve to rest on the ash heap of history.

EL PASO, TEXAS -- So I got my windows installed in late 2013 and in 2019 when my wife was cleaning the windows two pieces of the window broke off. I called the warranty department to get it fixed which is now called Transform Home Pro informed me it is not the window but the installation and it would be $100 dollars for them to come out and if the repair is over 1 hour it would be an additional charge of $60 per hour plus mileage. I see that the high cost of these windows meant nothing. With the premium price I would except a premium product or service. I got neither - no wonder Sears is bankrupt.

PRESCOTT, ARIZONA -- Sears company do not stand behind their product. They first told me that a representative would be present at the time of installation and that never happened. I even called the inspector up and left a voice message which he never got back to me until I called the complaint department. During the time of installation they had gaps between my window and the frame that did not seem accurate. I have plenty of photos that I sent in to Sears and it appears they were not too concerned about my "guarantee satisfaction" right. I am so disappointed I did business with these folks. Now I am getting water or condenses in the windows already and it has not been a year since the installation. Please investigate or shop around before getting Sears Windows...

THORNDALE, TEXAS -- We had a salesperson come out on 7-23-18. We signed up for several windows to be replaced. The salesman was arrogant, but the product is what sold us. After many excuses (one being they needed 3 installers because of a large upstairs window) they finally showed up on 10-8-18 with only 2 people. Yes it took almost 3 months to get our windows installed.

The installers did a great job with the window installation, but broke a stained glass that was in the entry and when I asked if Sears would pay for this, I was told that it fell on one of the installers and "I'm" lucky he didn't get hurt. They moved furniture and didn't put it back, and their clean up was substandard. Because of our experience, I would never recommend this company. The product is good, however the rest of our experience was terrible!

EL PASO, TEXAS -- I bought 10 vinyl windows from Sears after expressing the drafts I had from my old metal windows. The Sales Rep presented me the solution to my worries. However, after the installation and $10,000 I still dealing with drafts passing around the new windows. In which I contacted project manager "Mike" to explain my issue and he forward me to a planner "Darren" to schedule a sub-contractor to examined my windows.

The sub-contractor came with some chalk and said they will re-chalk and hope for the best. I am still out $10000 and with drafty windows. I will remove the trim and properly do the installation around my windows. If a window has no cracks in the chalking and drafts remain then it's either cheap chalk or a bad installation job.

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA -- We purchased windows from Sears for the entire house. One window leaks water when it rains and 3 windows have a draft. I have been calling customer service since August. It's now the end of December and nobody has been out to look at the window. They don't tell you that the warranty calls for you to pay 100.00 for them to inspect the windows. Extra charges will come when Sears repairs the windows. Make sure you understand the warranty for the windows. I thought I could trust Sears. Stay away from Sears because they do not back the product. Once it is installed, they are done with you.

ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI -- November 9th 2016 I signed a contract for window installation and was told that somebody would be by in 2 weeks to measure the windows. No show. Got a hold of the project manager finally and was told somebody would be out to measure the windows. This is 2 more weeks. At which time the windows were suppose to be getting put in. Again no show. The project manager comes out and measures the windows the following week. So, 2 more weeks and the windows are finally here. Guess what? They are the wrong size and have to be reordered. Now 2 more weeks have passed and no windows. I start calling the project manager. They won't take or return my calls.

Finally the sales representative steps up and tries to help. Now it's the end of January and the windows are in but the outside wrap is not on. Another 2 weeks has gone and the installer starts calling me about putting a lien on my property because he has not gotten paid yet. The middle of February finally done. Still have to pay the full price even after taking days off work for people to not show up. Now only a week has gone by and I had some personal problem to take care of - already want to send me to collections. I hope this helps some of you to make a decision on not to use Sears. They won't be doing the other half of my duplex when the time comes that much is for sure.

Faulty Window Installation
By -

ATLANTA, GEORGIA -- I purchased in 2001, on the Sears home improvement account, two replacement windows for my den window. Sears handled the sales, the contract, window installation and window inspection. Three years after the installation, the wall began to show serious signs of moisture problems. The house literally became covered in serious mold and mildew. The walls under the windows and below the windows were black, the floor was rotten and the furniture beneath the windows was ruined by mold. Even the clothes and jewelry was green.

At first, the problem looked like a basement leak. So, I consulted a basement waterproofing expert. He told me that I did not have a basement but a lower level and the basement did not have any leakage. The windows on the top floor was not sealed on the outside. After a long fight with Sears, the company agreed to pay me to restore the damages caused by the mold to the house. They however refused to pay for the damages caused to the contents. The fabric and paper contents were deemed too toxic and dangerous to use without specialized cleaning. Most of the items are too destroyed to clean.

In addition there was considerable damages produced by the mold remediation and building project to the lawn and the wood floors. Sears agreed to pay a final settlement of $7500 on the contents replacement and repair. I did not sign a release for this settlement amount. Since 70% of the household was severely damaged, the amount of $7500 does not begin to pay for the repairs. cleaning and replacement. Presently, I am living from about two suitcases of clothes. My once green lawn was reduced to dirt and weed grown yard. The floors are so damaged I can not see the wood grain. Years of family keepsakes are damaged with mold.

Most of the household is in a Public Storage space because the mold makes them too dangerous to touch without protective masks and clothing. Sears knows about the situation but they are standing firm, by refusing to provide sufficient monetary amounts to return me to a whole and usable household. They are also demanding that I pay for the windows that ruined my house and household. I strongly suggest that anyone who reads this story to resist using Sears for any home remodeling projects.

Damage Resulting = House was deemed toxic, due to increased levels molds. I had to immediately leave the house until the house was cleaned of mold. Remained out of my house for 14 months, cost $6,000 (Sears paid living expenses for 12 months).

Daily process of working between Sears, their insurance company Liberty Mutual and other professional interrupted career, cost $35,000. Loss of lawn, cost $1200. Loss of floor, $1300. Loss laundry room that was in lower level, cost to replace, $4,000. Loss of furniture, cost to replace or restore, $23,000. Loss of clothes, cost to clean or replace $12,000. Loss of professional library and art $10,000. Loss of family keepsakes, no replacement cost, restoration possible, no estimate of cost. Additional expenses, paid out of pocket, $8500.

Windows Lifetime Warranty Not Honored

NJ -- We bought windows and installation from Sears over other suppliers because they offered lifetime (owner) on the product. ($33,000 windows and siding work.) Two windows have lost the Argon and misted over. Now Sears cannot locate the warranty, because the transaction was over 7 years ago!! Cannot tell me who the manufacturer was at the time (they switched manufacturers), and don't have anybody in their organization who remembers the previous manufacturer. (I am willing to go to the manufacturer and request replacement materials.) Does anybody know who they used in the Central NJ area?
