Long Time Customer - LOST!
Posted by Vincenzo on 04/01/2010
PALATINE, ILLINOIS -- I'd been going to Sushi Para Palatine for a several years and used to think it was great. The Sushi is still decent, and the fillets portions are generous - HOWEVER, this restaurant has declined considerably over the past few years as far as service, especially when it comes to children...

There is a height gauge on the wall that is supposed to determine what price your child should pay. But instead of using this as the standard, if they see your child, no matter what age, 18 months - 3-years-old, eating more than they feel is within their widely varying parameters, they actually come to your table and tell you that the child's cost is now $Y instead of $X.

This has happened to me on more than one occasion. My son's cost has been fluctuation sporadically over the past year. They literally charged us $3 during one visit after first stating that there would be no charge; then they charged us $8 the next visit, and $5 the visit after that! There is no standard. It's as if they feel it's acceptable to change their prices during the course of your meal. The same has been the case with our daughter who is only 2.

Also, my wife is allergic to seafood, but enjoys the other options on the All-U-Can-Eat menu (Salad, Yaki Chicken, Edamame, etc.). Because she does not eat the Sushi - which we all know is laid over a pressed bed of rice - we ask if she can get a side bowl of rice. Depending on who are server is or who's managing that day, it's either FREE (as it should be considering that she is not eating any sushi which includes rice), it we are charged anywhere between $1 - $2 for the bowl. And there's no arguing with them because they either don't understand what you're trying to explain, or they stand firm with a "too bad" attitude.

Finally, they now charge for small condiments, which used to be free. The Spicy Mayo used to be free. Then there was a charge if you got a 2nd helping. Now it's $.50 per order - which are pretty much just a few dabs in a dipping dish, hardly worth the expense.

I was in yesterday and it was my last time. I will not go back. I was alone, and the straw that broke the camel's back was the fact that I had to leave for an appointment and asked if I could take the rest of my edamame to go. I had no Sushi left, and they had brought out this appetizer a little late. I was told that if I took it with me there would be an additional charge, but if I ate it in, it was included in my AUCE pricing. What logic does that make? I've paid for it; I'm eating it - whether inside of out of the establishement is irrelevant.

So, the food is decent/ the customer service is atrocious!
Mediocre products and poor customer service is a reason NOT to keep coming back!

A height gauge? That's fairly dumb. What about families that have children that aren't average height for their age? Like me, for instance; I was 5'8" by the time I hit 13 years of age.
Whatever happened to charging a set fee for kids 12 and under?
A height gauge... that just silly. Children grow like weeds... or they have giant growth spurts.
Posted by madconsumer on 2010-04-01:
sounds reasonable. kids that are below average height eat less. kids over average eat more.
Posted by Anonymous on 2010-04-01:
I have always been short, but I have always had a healthy appetite. I have always been able to put a lot of food away, even as a kid. So this rule is stupid. Height has nothing to do with how much someone can eat
Posted by Anonymous on 2010-04-01:
What's stupid is this place advertises one price for children based on height and then half way through the meal arbitrarily change the price. If it were me I would have told them to stick it in two languages.

Is there no end to the ways companies try to hose the customer these days. Yeah, don't go back. Warn others not to as well. Good review!

"kids over average eat more."

Not really. I still didn't eat a whole lot as a child no matter how tall I got. I didn't hit 100 lbs until I was in high school. And I was 20 lbs underweight when I graduated.

Good review. Valid complaints. Charging by height is ridiculous, and then changing the price midway through the meal is absurd. I realize that the price for kids at an all you can eat buffet is a little tricky, but I think it evens out in the end because some kids eat very little. I have never been at a buffet where the price for children didn't go by age. Basing it on a physical characteristic is crazy. Next they'll be charging according to a child's weight!

Rice Charge In My Napkin
Posted by Ktaylo19 on 02/27/2009
PALATINE, ILLINOIS -- My mom and I went here for lunch on her Birthday and we ordered a good sized amount of sushi to share from the all-you-can-eat lunch menu. The sushi had way too much rice on it and even though it was an amount of sushi we could normally eat with no problem. So my mom and I took some of the rice off and spread it around the plate and also stuffed it into the napkins that we had previously used to wipe our hands on. The waitress who we hadn't seen since she brought the sushi an hour prior, came back to pick up the plates, she takes our napkins and opens them up and then proceeds to tell us that we have to pay for the rice.

How disgusting and obnoxious could this place really get!?

Are you being serious or is this a joke?
Posted by old fart on 2009-02-27:
too much rice on your sushi..? what the heck is that!
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-02-27:
you ever sample the sushi OldF?
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-02-27:
LOL OF, I'm picturing them pushing rice around on their plate and hiding it in their napkins to make it look like they ate it......reminds me of when I was a kid and tried to get out of eating eggs.

I say this review is a joke..it was pretty funny I have to admit.
Posted by BokiBean on 2009-02-27:
Why did you hide rice in a napkin? I mean, how much rice are we talking? I would have just left it on the plate and if there were any questions (which I doubt there would be), explained why.

Great Food And Good Service!
Posted by Cjackson1481 on 11/21/2008
PALATINE, ILLINOIS -- Most of these complaints are from people eating in and I've only done takeout. I stop by to pick up dinner a couple times a month and have been for years - back when they first opened and there was never anyone there. I've found the food to be extremely fresh and flavorful. The spider roll (with fried soft shell crab) is wonderful and my old stand by, spicy tuna roll never fails. I've always found the staff to be friendly and if I have a special request they take care of it. Not all of the servers are fluent in English and perhaps that accounts for some of the "shrugs" that others have spoken about.

And yes, several of them are from China - who cares? I can't explain why I have had such great food/service while others complain about these things. All I can say is go and try it, hopefully you'll become a fan too!

Not As Bad As Everyone Makes It Sound
Posted by CrazyQuiltDragon on 07/11/2008

I won't lie. Sushi para makes it difficult not to feel gluttonous. There's a large selection available that includes both maki and nigiri sushi as well as tempura, salads and soups, and I can say at least from my own experience that the maki WASN'T overly 'ricey.' Although not the most amazing sushi I've ever had in my life, I can confidently say it was more than worth the cost for the
availability and quality.

The staff was accommodating to us even though we were unsure of our eventual party size and the dining room was packed. This alone should be an indication that Sushi Para is doing its job well. The service was slow, but we received drinks and appetizers quickly (very good quality edamame served and nicely prepared). The Sake Nigiri was delicious when it arrived. I would say the service could use a little inspiration, but they were not rude, and even served extra masago on the side for my picky coworker.

It gets a solid B in my book. The price is more than worth it as long as you don't try to take advantage. At the very least, finishing a big plate with friends could be a fun challenge. The service is slow, but accommodating and kind. The variety and quality are good. Please don't let a couple of irate customers with expectations that would run any business into to the ground ruin the opportunity of a fun and relatively inexpensive night of all you can eat sushi for you. They even use real crab. :)

Horrible Service
Posted by Sueyyy on 07/17/2007
PALATINE, ILLINOIS -- We had a reservation for 8:00 and the woman did not seat us until 8:55..... Considering that they stop serving at 9:00....She tells me that we can only order once and that we would have to pay for the food we did not finish! What kinda of buffet is that! The people there are so rude ... We didn't even eat dinner there because we didn't want to only order once. When I told her I would never go back there again... She just shrugged it off and said ok.. No apologies or nothing! Seriously, do not go there. The waitresses don't give a damn about you and they talk crap in chinese to each other!... I know this because I am chinese but they obviously thought I was something else...

This is the worst restaurant ive ever been to, I cant believe I was even treated the way I was.

Is the food there so good that it's worth waiting nearly an hour for a table? If I had an 8:00 reservation and knew I had to wait so long for a table I would have gone elsewhere. What good is a reservation if you gotta wait that long?

Isn't sushi Japanese?

I love it when people talk about you in another language, and they have no idea that you speak that language! I am fluent in Spanish and love listening to the wait staff at Mexican restaurants.

Sushi Para
Posted by SushiKing on 05/26/2007
PALATINE, ILLINOIS -- This restaurant is absolutely horrible! The service is really bad, the hostess is completely unprofessional and disorganized. I brought a friend and while we waited patiently, we must have watched the hostess seat two other people who came in after us first! I was absolutely livid that I made it known we were in front of them which just bounced off of deaf ears. The hostess didn't even try to apologize or make things right. In fact I watched in anger as she proceeded to seat another couple who came in after us. I will never come back to this restaurant, the fish was not fresh and you got full on rice because they put so much of it. I realize I am only one review here but the common denominator of this restaurant is the callous staff and so so sushi.

If they treated you so poorly before you got seated, why didn't you go somewhere else?
Posted by Anonymous on 2007-05-27:
kinda bummed you out from the start.I probably would have bailed.
Posted by Anonymous on 2007-05-27:
"you got full on rice because they put so much of it."

Did they force feed it to you?

Posted by Anonymous on 2007-05-27:
I also would have left, you must of been really hungry?
Posted by Anonymous on 2007-05-27:
emt c - They did not force feed him the rice till he was full. His mommy was not there to aid him and tell him to stop eating the rice so he could save room for the Sushi.

Well I wouldnt go back there.

Terrible service and experience
Posted by Sushilover on 05/08/2006
decent food, but terrible service! i walked out very unhappy vowing to never eat at Sushi Para in palatine again.
for $16.99/person sushi buffet, you get ripped-off because the sushi rolls had WAY too much rice in them which get you full fast on cheap carbs! i removed the rice from the sushi so i could finish the rolls i ordered because i knew they charge for leftover food. i tried throwing out the rice in a napkin but they caught me and charged me $10 for that!! for $10, they lost the eternal goodwill of one sushi lover. (i hope that was worth their $10 gain.) if they didn't load their sushi with so much rice in the first place, none of this would have happened and i would have finished my sushi with no problem! the sushi was actually pretty good, after i removed all the excess rice.

they messed up 4 orders at our table (including mine)! from not giving all the ordered rolls to mixing up sushi plates to waiting too long for the food to come out, this was a bad experience from beginning to end!

a restaurant experience is not just about the food, but the entire experience including ambiance, service, and whether or not you walked out happier than when you came in. this restaurant definitely did not do it for me.

Eating at a place like that can be hazardous to your health anyway. They charged you for leftover food and you got caught throwing some away? (LOL) Did they make you eat the rest before you could have dessert or just made you go to bed?
Posted by glc on 2006-05-08:
I must be living in a bubble, as I have never heard of a "buffet" style restaurant, that charges for leftover food. I have noticed certain "buffet" restaurants will charge for a "doggy bag", but that makes sense! What will they think of next?
Posted by DORCAS on 2006-05-09:
That seems absolutely illegal to nearly force you to eat what you've already been charged for or else you pay a fine. Are they charging for having to "really" clean the dishes instead of just wiping them off? This is absurd! No meal could be that good to go through having to hide the evidence of leftovers.

Service Charge
Posted by Dmitry on 03/13/2006
PALATINE, ILLINOIS -- We had a family dinner at Sushi Para, Palatine Illinois. 5 people.
Service was very bad. We had to ask two times, sometimes three times to get attention. Were waiting for one hour to get the order. They made a mistakes with our orders, tried to fixed. Had to wait another 10 minutes. Food was bad and not fresh.
When they brought the bill, 15% of the service charge was included. I tried to refuse the service charge. They told me that they call to police. I was forced to pay service fee for the worst service ever. The restaurant phone number is 847-202-9922.
