Extremely poor customer service
By -

CORAL SPRINGS, FLORIDA -- I was ripped off on a cell phone by this Boost Mobile contractor store located in a plaza. Tried to return phone ten minutes later and they refused. Owner lied, mislead me on the product and overcharged me. He cursed me out in front of my son and it was just horrible customer service. I didn't stoop to his level, just wanted my money back. After all, the phone didn't have the features he said it did. Still refused to do anything but yell and cursed constantly. I don't want the same thing to happen to you. Email, for details.

Unethical Company - DISHONEST! kept charging after cancellation
-

Talk America long distance (got it through AOL as a member) is one of the most deceptive companies I have ever witnessed. I had service with them for 3 years, and then about a year ago I stopped receiving my monthly billing statement via email from them – which is when the problems began. Talk America began using deceptive tactics to add extra charges to my account, which was automatically billed to my credit card without any breakdown of the charges. I started to get suspicious once my bills began to be a little higher than usual. Finally, after a half an hour of trying to find my statement online, which used to be sent via email to me and was once easy to find online, I discovered I was being charged a larger monthly fee for service than I used to be charged. They never even notified me that it had increased. And my July statement said that I owed $17 in taxes and fees alone, although the prior month it was $11. I emailed Talk America asking why it was $6 higher one month than the other, and they never returned my email question. So I called them, and all they said was that it was the government, not them. And they wouldn’t do anything more about it. Then the next month the monthly fees were back down to $11!!! Why was it going up then down? Strange, taxes don’t change like that!

Because my monthly fees were changing from one month to the next, I didn’t trust Talk America and cancelled my service for the next billing cycle, which Bell South handled. On my Bell South Statement it said they cancelled service at the end of the billing cycle, like I had asked. But then Talk America charged me on my credit card for the next month even though I had cancelled it and had written proof from Bell South. So I called Talk America again, and the rep said she couldn’t do anything about it. That Bell South notified them 3 days after the next billing cycle started, so they had to go ahead and charge me for the entire next month. Then I spoke to a manager, and she said the same and was extremely unhelpful, as well as difficult to understand. I think she should go back to grammar school. Even after I told her I had proof in writing it was shut off on the appropriate date, she still wouldn’t credit me. They were firm about charging me an entire monthly fee for only 3 days of service (even though I wasn’t supposed to have service those 3 days and never even used it).

So I called BellSouth, BellSouth said they indeed notified Talk America on the appropriate date (last day of the billing cycle), called Talk America AGAIN, to tell them, and I was FINALLY CREDITED – as I should have been all along. Thanks BellSouth for following through on your end. I would not recommend Talk America; it’s a dishonest company. They’re deceptive and their customer service is terrible!

Unable to repair, continued to bill, then tried to overbill
By -

GEORGIA -- Talk America did some upgrades in our area which killed our Caller ID. We were forewarned but they were unable to restore it. After 5 weeks of numerous phone calls, the same "suggestions" for us to try over and over, and sending a worker to our house (where it was determined the trouble was not at location), and continuing to pay for the feature while doing without, we changed providers. Talk America thereafter attempted to collect on service AFTER our account was switched over, and representative who called us about it was extremely rude and actually stupid (failure to understand their own practice of billing ahead for monthly service). Problem with charges we did not owe was ultimately "silently" resolved and we received no apology for any of the trouble.

(Once service provider was switched, caller ID immediately started working again.)

Talk America
2704 Alternate 19
Palm Harbor Florida 34683-2639

To Whom It May Concern,

My mother had signed up numerous friends and family to your telephone long distance company and therefore earned $25.00 in long distance. She called and requested a $25.00 long distance calling card to send to her daughter.

Upon receiving the card she, she sent it on to her daughter who in turned used the card to make about eight long distance calls and assumed the card was about done. She disposed of the card in the trash receptacle at the phone booth.

My mother received her bill and discovered that four different people from the town in which my sister resides had proceeded to use the card to make long distance calls fraudulently.

My mother contacted Talk America immediately and the card was cancelled and the $70.00 in calls for her next months bill were taken off of the billing statement. Talk America is still holding her responsible for the fraudulent calls made for the billing statement of 5/25/02?

All of this began due to an incorrect card being mailed to my Mother, she requested a $25.00 long distance calling card, not an open ended calling card that had an actual PIN written on the card itself? I have personally never heard of any kind of card having an actual PIN printed on the card itself? Consumers are constantly reminded to never put a PIN on any kind of card that they carry so why would a company put the actual PIN on the card itself?

My mother , myself, and my brother contacted Talk America numerous times and were treated very poorly. My mother finally was told to send a copy of the police report to Talk America and it would be taken care of. I traveled to the town in which the police report had been filed and requested a copy. I then faxed the report to Talk America and after approximately a week, my mother was told it was a “family issue” and the calls were not going to be taken off of her bill?

My mother has paid her balance of this bill and is refusing to pay for the calls that were made fraudulently. My mother has the actual letter she sent my sister along with the postmarked envelope, which stipulates that the card is worth $25.00 in long distance. That was what she requested and that is what she thought she had received?

To this day, my mother still has not received any kind of credit for the $25.00 she earned? I don’t understand how a company can get away with something like this and cause so many problems over a $25.00 credit that still ultimately has not yet been received?

Thank You,

Deceptive Business Practices of Talk America

OMAHA, NEBRASKA --
J.D. Power and Associates lists Talk America as number one in customer service. I no longer trust the opinion of J. D. Power and Associates. Talk America intentionally mislead me regarding the services that I would receive if I signed up with their service. When I called to ask them why didn't they honor what I was told by their customer service person, they said they didn't know anything about it and did not keep a tape recording of the matter. I immediately cancelled the service after only 6 DAYS (5-14-2004 until 5-19-2004). Talk America now states that I owe them $20.00 for 6 days of service. Essentially, there are 31 days in a month so, according to Talk America's calculation, a customer is charged $20.00 per every 6 days of service or $100.00 per month. This is not the amount I agreed to pay when I signed up for Talk America's Service. I have learned my lesson. I will never switch to an OFF-BRAND phone service again.

TSR Fees

SOUTH CAROLINA -- Has anyone else seen the "TSR administration fee" increase from zero 2 years ago, to $1.95 one year ago, to $9.95 this month? That is a 500% increase this year! Well, I have and it seems the fee may not be what is implied by the name. All of this fee may not have been those authorized by the state. I believe that TalkAmerica is really increasing the monthly fee and disguising it with this term. BEWARE.

ATHENS, GEORGIA -- I'm sorry a prior reviewer had a bad experience with TALK AMERICA. I have had very good luck with this company. They've always been informative and pleasant. Perhaps, I asked all the right questions before I accepted them as my long distance carrier. Honestly, I prefer almost anyone to BellSouth, let me tell you.

Better luck next time.
