Theft from your customers

PLYMOUTH, MINNESOTA -- My father took our family out for a nice dinner at TGI Fridays this last Thursday Feb 8th 2007. When the bill came and it was a good amount for 9 people they had taken out 18% gratuity my mother gave them a $25.00 gift card and said use this for the tip. We had gotten home and not only did he get gratuity they never took the 25.00 gift card off the bill or off the gratuity so the waiter ended up with a 62.00 tip.

Just be warned that they will not tell you whether or not they take gratuity you have to really look at your bill and then correct them a few times to get it right or to keep them honest.

Didn't the person who signed the credit card receipt look at the amount they were signing off on?? This all could have been avoided if the receipt had been looked over, then you could said, hey wait, what about the gift card? Whatever happened to anyone being responsible for their own actions?? You accuse them of ripping you off, you allowed it.

Skye is right. You get two chances to review your bill at a restaurant...the initial bill then the final bill once they've ran your card and/or gave you change for your cash. The person paying should make sure they amount looks correct, that all goft cards are used and that they don't add amnother tip on top of one automtatically added.
Hugh_Jorgen on 02/09/2007:
You tell 'em Skye! I imagine if you look closely you will also see the 18% gratuity was added automatically to the bill because you had such a large group. When you told them to use the card for the tip they most likely assumed you meant "in addition to" to one already on the bill.
bill on 02/09/2007:
Most restaurants automatically add gratuity for groups of 6 or more. It's clearly marked on the bill you receive (and are supposed to look at before you pay). The waiter didn't take it off the bill because he was told to use it for gratuity. He probably thought it was an extra tip. I doubt he thought it was his only tip because $25.00 for a grouup of 9 people is pretty cheap.

Well you should have checked it over before paying the bill. Also how do you know they did not make a mistake for accusing them of theft. How would you like it if the card was expired and you did not know it and they accused you of trying to cheat them by using an expired card. Also it's use the correct spelling for weather. You are not taking about the climate outside which is spelled weather you should have used whether.

There is no such thing as a nice dinner at T.G.I Fridays!

Anonymous on 02/09/2007:
Boy, that's no good. You really have to look over your bill these days.

Unless you are ordering the #9 at McDonald's, then you know what you are paying for. (a meal AND a cleaning bill)

Did you get chicken wings?

Skye does it again! You go girl!
patti_25 on 02/09/2007:
If you had a substantial meal for 9 people, say $20/person, that would be $180 bucks right there. Add in drinks, another $20 or so for everyone if they're not alcoholic, AND 8% sales tax? You're looking at a tab of over $216!! 18 % Mandatory gratuity would be right around $40 bucks... so what your mom gave them, was not nearly enough. And for the trouble your group probably gave them, they deserved more.
Oh yeah, and always check the receipt before you leave or too bad, so sad.
I've been the waitress, and I've been the customer... rather be the latter cause waiters/waitresses have to suck it up when all they want to do is tell you to shut up.
Nohandle on 02/10/2007:
Allym: the gratuity, if automatically added to your bill, will be stated on every menu...sometimes you have to look for it. Some of us learned of this (at that gratuity policy years ago the hard way when we double tipped, and a generous amount at that. IRS... the tip was left on the table in cash. For a party the size of yours a $25.00 tip is really not reasonable considering the total bill.

When you go to a restaurant expect to tip the waitperson a decent amount. They are working for a living like the rest of us. And yes, check your bill before paying. If you don't want to be bothered, and are concerned about the tip, a simple "has the gratuity been added?" normally will be sufficient. In your case, I don't see as to where there was any theft committed.
DORCAS on 02/12/2007:
patti 25, you really took some time and figured out the tab. Good job on the math skills.
As for the gratuity, I've seen restaurants that actually have a sign displayed somewhere on the window or wall as you enter. I've never given it much thought before now. I'm sure I've double tipped without realizing it. But unless it's really bad service, I would over tip anyway. All I ask is that my drink be kept filled (soda)

Found Band Aid in BBQ Sauce.
Posted by on
SAGINAW, MICHIGAN -- Yes, you read it right. We went to TGI Fridays to celebrate my sisters birthday, not only was the service bad, my husband found a folded up band aid in his dish of barbecue sauce. HOW DISGUSTING. The managers acted shocked and of course we left without paying for our partially eaten food.

They stated that it couldn't have come from their kitchen because their cooks only wear blue bandaids and gloves. They stated that they get their BBQ sauce from a manufacturer.

I'm sure this was just a random incident, and would not claim ALL Tgif's are bad.

Count yourself fortunate you didn't find the accompanying finger as well!

Mmmmmmmmmm....chili. Ha...ha.
Anonymous on 10/18/2007:
Several years ago, I was eating chili at the Border Cafe in Richmond VA, and I found a steel wool pad in my bowl! I did get a free meal. If you could have seen the place, you wouldn't be amazed!

As gross as this is... I agree it could happen at any restaurant, and probably has!

I once had hair cooked into my Shrimp Tempura. I took it back and they offered me some more....No thanks, I'll have the soup!!!
sarahnkrystal on 10/18/2007:
It probably had nothing to do with TGIFridays, but rather the company they order BBQ sauce from instead. I'll believe the manager on this one.
killerklown on 10/18/2007:
Yeah, most restaurant chains use blue bandages so that if it falls into food, it's easily found. I'd side with the manager on this one too. Plus, TGIFridays have some goood food.
Anonymous on 10/18/2007:
I will agree with the Killer Klown, thank you, drive through...

Just imagine all of the stuff we eat that gets in our food that we never even notice!
steve101 on 10/19/2007:
Many, many years ago when working my way through school as a waiter I heard a woman scream and I found a bandaid wrapped around the tip of a finger in her tuna fish salad. I took the finger back into the kitchen and the salad man didn't even realize that he was missing a piece of his finger. Amazingly, his fingers were so calloused that he didn't feel it and there was no blood. He just tossed it in the garbage and continued on making salads.

Lousy food at Friday's
Posted by on
OXNARD, CALIFORNIA -- The first time I ate at TGI Friday's, the food was served lukewarm. This time, the salmon was so overcooked that it was tough and hard. I asked that no scallions be used to garnish my meal, but it arrived covered in scallions.

Service was sporadic and the server didn't really seem to care whether or not our dining experience was a good one. I suspect there weren't enough servers on duty.

Overall, the food was awful and the service was marginal. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Wow, overcooked salmon!!! that is really bad. If the wait staff was properly trained they would have intervened on your behalf. And for pete's sake how could they miss the scallions? You know what's worse than the stinky service and cadaver like hunk of fish is that they took the thanks out of your Friday. That's just wrong. Crud like that really rubs me the wrong way. Thank God it's Friday only if you avoid TGIF for dinner.

This one is simple. NO TIP. Never go back.
Anonymous on 01/06/2007:
Service was marginal is the key statement, I hope you didn’t tip? Never go back there unless you are in Japan or Guam the food and the service are good there.
