Three Brothers Moving and Storage Held My Furniture Hostage
Posted by ScamStopper07 on 08/27/2007
CABIN JOHN, MARYLAND -- Recently we had a very small move to make; roughly 20 miles, less than 20 boxes, and about 8 pieces of furniture. We shopped for the lowest bidder online and found that we were able to get the lowest quote from Rachel, the president of Three Brothers Moving and Storage. We informed Rachel that it was a very small move and we didn't want to spend a whole lot, so she agreed to reduce their minimum hours from 5 to 4 (including travel) and we were also quoted a very competitive hourly rate. Three Brothers appeared to be a good choice at first, but when the day of the move came they didn't show up and they didn't call. After 2.5 hours of waiting in an empty apartment and leaving countless messages with the representative in Three Brothers' office we gave up and went home. Finally, several hours after they were supposed to be there, one of the Three Brothers movers called us back and made arrangements to come out much later that evening. This time they actually did show up and everything seemed to go well. That is, until our last piece of furniture was loaded onto their truck. Once they had all of our furniture, we were informed, that even there they had been no additional time or material costs that the actual cost would be in excess of 50% of what they originally quote us!

They had increased the minimum of hours we would be charged as well as added additional fees which were not disclosed on the estimate and there was nothing we could do about it if we wanted our furniture back. We called Rachel who had little comment about the problem or our written estimate which now seemed to mean nothing and after fumbling around for a bit, had to suddenly get off the phone with us.

We were called back shortly by someone who must have been the office "bulldog" who verbally bullied us into paying the ransom for our furniture. It became very clear quickly that they knew what they were doing... ANYONE WHO IS READING THIS PLEASE DO NOT FALL VICTIM TO THREE BROTHERS MOVING AND STORAGE. THEY ARE EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL, THEY TREAT THEIR CUSTOMERS HORRIBLY AND DO NOT STAND BY THEIR WORD.

...BTW: I think there are other companies in the country with a name similar to Three Brothers, and just so there's no confusion, the company this review is referring to is "Three Brothers Moving and Storage, Inc" which serves the Maryland, DC and Virginia areas.

You should have called the cops, as you had written documentation of the bill the cops would have been able to help you. Not to mention the movers probably didn't want to have to deal with that either, :O.

Cops would have said "Civil Matter." Take all of your documentation to the District Attorney and see if there is a criminal statute somewhere. Then Sue the B-----ds.

I realized after the fact that I could have called the cops. What they were doing is also illegal in MD. Once a mover loads your furniture onto the truck, it must be delivered to the final destination. At the time I would have thought that I would have received the same response that Moneybags was referring to but the MD Attorney General does advise consumers to call the police if they refuse to do this. Go to http://www.oag.state.md.us/consumer/edge102.htm

Agreed. Everyone in MD who has been ripped off by this company needs to take action and complain to the authorities.

Billing Abuse, Hidden Fee's
Posted by SteveFeedback on 11/06/2007
NORTHERN VIRGINIA, VIRGINIA -- Three Brothers Moving company billed in the middle of the day for "expected" time to finish the job. They hold your furniture hostage until you pay.

When the job was finished early, owner Lou would not refund the excess and overcharged.

Subsequent, Lou left a very threatening voicemail saying "We are not going to refund your money, I know where you live and I'm on my way over and in fact, I'm going to charge you for boxes we use on other peoples jobs".

Secondary issue was hidden taxes of 25% and time and a half for overtime that was not disclosed upon intial consultation. They try to hike the bill really high by charging exorbant hidden fees. They were really mad I had some of my own boxes and supplies.

This was the worst moving company ever!

I cut this following segment from another blog, but it fits my experience exactly and is so well written.

ANYONE WHO IS READING THIS PLEASE DO NOT FALL VICTIM TO THREE BROTHERS MOVING AND STORAGE. THEY ARE EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL, THEY TREAT THEIR CUSTOMERS HORRIBLY AND DO NOT STAND BY THEIR WORD.

Check the State of Virginia web pages for the law on moving services. I know that in Maryland a mover cannot hold your belongings hostage for extra money. Could be the same in VA. If you had a signed contract then the law is on your side, but if you let them proceed on just a quote then you've got problems because they can charge whatever they want. Hopefully you have saved that voice mail. It would come in extremely useful in court.
