Washer Smells And Dryer Does Not Dry Properly
Posted by on
When we purchased a LG TROMM Washer(WM2688HNM) High Efficiency and XL Capacity Electric Dryer w 9 drying programs (DLE8377NM) for $2,246.12 from Home Depot we were told this was the top of the line. I wondered how much better could it be, because I had Maytag washer and dryer and never once had any problems over 30 years. The first week I started to smell this weird odor. By the 2nd week it was really noticeable. I contacted Tromm directly and yes I did every thing the book said to do in caring for the washer. I use Tide HE and I was instructed to use only 1 tablespoon of detergent and empty water out each and every time from bottom of machine and use Clorox with hot water. I followed instructions to a tee, but it did not help. In fact the Clorox did not empty properly unbeknownst to me and when I did my load of work clothes the rest of Clorox dumped ruining my clothes. I purchased tablets from the company which did nothing. I would put the washer on hot and put it on drum clean and nothing changed. I have to leave the door open all the time and it is in my beautiful kitchen so the area doors where the washer and dryer are are always open plus the door to the washer with that mildew, musty smell which permeates the house. The washer does not wash well at all. I will put clothes in with stains and treat the stains prior to putting in washer and I can still see faint stains or they don't come out at all. We also had a problem with water not coming into washer and we had the washer and dryer serviced. We were told we need a water softener since we have a well. We never had trouble before. Then the service guy found that the tube where water comes into washer was broken already. The service guy said its so common with these. He came right out and said he would never buy one of these because you can't pull it out to clean drum that it is all attached as one piece and these are lousy. Then I told him that the dryer will dry and you pull clothes out and it is spotty damp on clothes. He said by using dryer sheets with this dryer you have to take something rough and rub across sensor occasionally because it gets coated with substance from fabric sheet. You use your towel one time and you can smell this mildew smell. I feel like I need to take all our clothes and just wash them at the laundermat in the regular washers to get them clean. They have this strange smell. I'm not a germ phobic, but I know that the washer is not washing properly with that small amount of water and its gross! I would do better if I had one of the old fashion scrub boards! TROMM needs to reimburse everyone of us for selling us a product that is poor and high maintenance.

I can't wait to get rid of these. It is the worst washer and dryer I have ever had and used. I really want my money back from TROMM.

Sounds like a true nightmare. I'll stick with my plain Jane, commercial-look old RCA machines. These fancy water and energy savers sound like a nightmare.

do you leave the door open when not in use?

That's an excellent question MC. I always leave my washing machine door open, when not in use, and never have any problems with smells. Hope the op comes back and reads your question.

skye that was something my mother always told me. even top loaders can get smelly if always closed.

From the review:

"I have to leave the door open all the time and it is in my beautiful kitchen so the area doors where the washer and dryer are are always open plus the door to the washer with that mildew, musty smell which permeates the house."

That sounds awful. I can't stand the smell of mold. If the smell was there the first week, it almost sounds like the mold was present before you took possession of the washer. I don't think enough mold would accumulate in only one week to create a weird odor.

Following all the directions does not seem to be solving any of the problems. A scrub board would be easier, faster, cheaper and result in cleaner clothes. Do yourself a favor and go back to basics. I don't think it's possible for clothes to be cleaned in a minimal amount of water and detergent. That's one of the reasons I still don't have a front loader. The other reason is the mold. These washers are more trouble than they are worth.

I would want a refund, too. The least LG should do is let you exchange the machines for ones that work. That's a lot of money to spend on something that is causing you so much grief.

I was told by my repairman that you have to take a dry towel and dry the rubber and door also, along with letting the door open. I was having a problem with a smell starting to build up and after doing that it stopped. Also, he told me that the tide washer cleaner doesn't work, and to try 'Affinity'(I think that's what it's called). It is found where they sell washing machines. Walmart, Target, Kmart, Sam's, I found out, doesn't carry them. I run a load of whites on hot and bleach at least twice a week and my front loader doesn't smell.
