Villa Rita Country Cottages La Garita Alajuela Costa Rica Complaint - Don't Stay Here - 1 Bedroom; 1 Bath 10 Month Rental

Review by watsusalome on 2011-06-11
LA GARITA, ALAJUELA COSTA RICA -- I was tested and found to be ill from drinking the water provided by this establishment. The owner switches from well to city water at her discretion and neglects to inform her tenants. She and her family drank only bottled water but neglected to tell me of that fact. I discovered it by accident. I was accused of stealing a teapot when in fact I broke the $3.50 pottery pot, swept it up and placed it in the trash. The recliner was broken when provided and she blamed that on me. She kept my $200.00 security deposit, without explanation, after I sent her a written request for it.

The property is shabby; poorly maintained with poor quality mattresses. The photos are misleading.

Anytime you travel outside of the USA, the thing to do to protect yourself and your family, is to drink only bottled water, and bottle water only.

Dispute the charge with your credit card regarding the security. Tell them she kept it without giving you the reason you are entitled to.

As for the teapot, she does have the right to have it replaced.

I would generally agree to the notion of bottled water however....presumption that US water is the best....many older US cities have ancient infrastructure where residents are warned to let the tap water run in the AM to clear lead.
This advise also discounts water quality in say Western Europe, Canada, Japan, etc.
Bottled water in some countries you are warned to look for particularly high levels of specific chemicals. Some ASEAN countries list govt approval on specific tested brands and you are not recommended to drink bottle water that isn't tested.

I also would like to add, as another precaution, make sure whatever type of beverage you are ordering, order them ice cube free. People take many precautions, but sometimes fail to remember you can get just as sick from using ice cubes, that are not made with purfied, bottled water.
