TiVo Complaint - Don't Buy TiVo - TiVo HDXL Series
TiVo HDXL Series - Complaint
As background information, we were loyal TiVo customers for several years. We got our first TiVo in October of 2007. Since then we have upgraded to the HDXL series. We paid more than $600 for that unit. We also paid for a yearly subscription at the beginning of this year, in addition to all the yearly subscriptions we have had in the past. We’ve been good customers, and we tried hard to fix our current unit, including buying several attenuators and splitters per our conversation with the TiVo customer support.
Once I called the Customer support line they told me it would be $149 for a replacement. They said I could upgrade to a $99 unit, but that my yearly subscription would not transfer over, and that we would be out that money. I explained how we’ve been great customers for TiVo and we weren’t getting a good deal in this exchange. We paid over $600 for a unit that breaks 5 months after it was out of warranty. With all the expensive options for replacement it would be easier to go with a Comcast DVR. We initially liked TiVo, but we felt we weren’t getting any help in the matter. Because there unit broke 5 months after the 1 year warranty, we had to pay out of pocket. Customer service sucks there. We paid money to try and fix it, and then had to replace it. Don't ever sign up for a yearly or God forbid lifetime subscription. It won't roll over, and you'll be stuck with a useless unit. Go cable with your DVR. TiVo is a dying company that is clinging to life by screwing over there existing customers.

Comcast DVR's are relatively inexpensive. I believe our branch offered it to us for an additional $15 per month, or something in that ballpark. I couldn't imagine shelling out the type of money you did for the TiVo. Best of luck getting your issue resolved!
