Hughesnet Informative - Daily download allowance sucks.

Review by casey.boydston5 on 2011-06-18
I enjoy my internet for about an hour a day usually. The rest of the time it is as bad, if not worse than dial up internet. They have a short window from about 0100 to 0600 where you can download all you want, but that is not good when you need it right them. I am limited to 200mb a day before they cut my speed. There is a download manager, but it doesn't work with many sites I use including downloading stuff from school. If you have anything else available get it first. I just found out today that Verizon has increased its monthly download allowance to ten gigs now so I will probably be going back to them. I enjoy living in a rural area except that I cannot get a good internet provider.

Yes, living in a rural area has its advantages and disadvantages. Internet access is not one of them. I feel fortunate to have low speed DSL, and I had to wait several years after others to get it.

Putting a satellite in space and maintaining it is an expensive operation. Bandwidth is limited, as it always is, but even moreso due to the technology. It's too bad that Hugesnet isn't meeting your needs, but it is what it is. If you have high data needs, Hugesnet isn't for you.

Wow, for what you're paying, you'd think you'd get better service and speed. Have you tried calling and complaining to a csr? If you're out or nearly out of your contract, threaten to leave and try to negotiate for a better rate, etc.

meagain - the terms of Hugesnet's "daily limit without speed reduction" are very clearly spelled out on their website for all to see.

Thus, I do not anticipate them bargaining with a customer disappointed that they have to adgere to these restrictions that the customer knew when they signed up.

Additionally, they provide this tidbit:

"Typically, on the Basic plan, to reach your Download Allowance in a 24-hour period, you would have to download any of the following:

•67 photos (at 3 MB each)
•50 songs (at 4 MB each)
•10 video clips (at 20 MB each)"

Personally, I would never exceed the limit, and thus my speed would never be reduced Hugesnet as a penalty.

Not to butt in, but guess most folks consider that either they have UNLIMITED bandwith or else the RESTRICIONS would be featured in their TV ads. Not much of a provider if there are somewhat "hidden" restrictions.
