Visa Informative - Pay at the pump - Gasoline Purchase

Gasoline Purchase
Review by leet60 on 2011-06-22
Informative. As I was logging in to my bank there was a notice about Visa - below:

Visa's "Pay At The Pump" pre-authorization hold has increased to $125 and may take up to 72 hours to release from your account."

I called Visa and this information was confirmed. They did indicate that retail locations have the option to request a lower limit, but if not requested the $125.00 hold is now the general policy.

Personally I never pay at the pump with a credit card, but thought this information may be helpful to those that do.

This is good information. I do pay at the pump, ALWAYS, with a credit card. I am nowhere near my limit, so holds have no affect on me personally.

Incidentally, at a station I was at the other day, there was a sign on the pump saying "Maximum Visa purchase $75". I wonder what THAT is about...

Good info. I'll be sure to check the pre-auth online next time I pay at the pump for gas.

Regardless there has to be a better way. This is the year 2011. If the auth can hit in miliseconds then why can't the release. Silly.

I believe you are talking about a Visa Debt card. I never use my debt card for anything other than to get cash from an ATM. I use a credit card fir everything then pay the entire bill off at the end of the month. You have a lot more protection and rights with a credit card and you are not risking your own money.

I never pay at the pump since I usually want something inside, but this is very helpful information.

Just enter credit when using your debit card..end of problem.

I use my vias debit card (issued by my bank, not from a store) when i get gas and it only holds 1 dollar....I guess it depends where you get it, and where you live...or perhaps what bank you use.

I'm confused. I always pay at the pump with my Visa debit card, and I always use the debit option (enter PIN #). My bank does not do a pre-auth hold... what I pump is what is withdrawn, within minutes.

@just_cause. I expect this is in reference to those that do not enter a pin number with a debit card purchase.

See, i never put my pin number in at the gas station. It just swipes and it takes about a day to come out (but the dollar is a hold until they take it out).

Churro, the merchant still has to physically "batch" their card purchases at the end of the day (or longer if they choose to wait)...it's a 2 part process.
