The Hartford Informative - Claims? Get a lawyer
If you have a claim against The Hartford, I strongly recommend you get a lawyer. A Hartford client was ticketed for his actions that resulted in a collision between his truck and my motorcycle. No argument possible about fault.
The Hartford people separate the personal injury claim from the vehicle/property claim--unless it suites them to talk about both at once. But they seem error-prone or dishonest--I can't tell which--on both sides of the process.
The personal injury guy told me I have to eat the first $4000 in medical costs because of my state's laws. I believed him until I asked a lawyer, who told me that exclusion does not apply to motorcycle riders. If that was an honest mistake (from someone who does this all day every day) then it was pretty convenient.
The property claims folks were disorganized and dragged their feet quite a bit. The first time their mailed instructions differed from their phone instructions, I was told, "Oh you have to go with what is in writing." Then they sent me a written offer with an amount for my totaled motorcycle, but told me on the phone when I tried to accept the offer, "we are mistaken--it is cheaper to fix your bike--we take it all back."
I now wish I had called a lawyer as soon as I got done with the first doctor visit. I absolutely do not trust The Hartford.
