Garmin Complaint - Advertisements while I drive! - nuvi 1490

nuvi 1490 - Complaint
Review by mlsroadtrash2 on 2011-07-01
If I am using your navigation system to find my way, why would you put pop-up avertising on my display? If I need to find a hotel, or a store, I'll look it up on my Garmin! That is why I have it. I don't need to see advertisements while I drive. I already have to sit through 16 commercials if I want to watch a half hour television show. I have to watch a 14 second commercial to watch a youtube video. We get hit with advertising from every direction possible, and now my Garmin?!? The $200 I paid for it isn't enough? You need to sell out your customers to advertising?

Are you really using a Garmin while you drive, or do you pull over?

I drive past cars with illuminated screens all the time, and I wonder if the drivers are watching the road or something else.

trmn8r, I use my Garmin while driving, but only for directions. I do not program it while driving, because it makes my wife very angry and nervous. However, if Garmin is now allowing ads via their devices, that would upset me, also. I was going to update my two year old Garmin with new maps, but am now a little nervous if it includes pop-up ads. I read recently that the federal government is now concerned about all the distractions while driving (GPS, cell phones, entertainment systems, etc.), and may look at establishing some criteria regarding these items.

You receive the ads because of the "free" lifetime traffic reporting on your device. If you do not want to see the ads, disable traffic. I use my Garmin when I drive. I can't think of a better time to use it.

Changing my answer based on Vinnie's response. Having the option to turn off a free bonus service puts this in a bit different light. I guess it would be about whether competitive devices offer the traffic feature and do they include the ads.
