Groupon Scam Informative - Fake Groupon E-mail
Just a heads up for you Groupon junkies. I got a fake Groupon email today. Only reason I realized it was fake right off the bat was because I had unsubscribed from Groupon a few weeks ago (tired of all the deals that really were not deals... but that is another story).
I attached a screenshot below. Looks authentic. But if you hover over the links/buttons they all take you to the same page. Some site called whyeefour.com/groupon.
Actually visiting the site get more interesting since it takes you to a replica of Groupon, complete with fake stats on how many folks have taken the deal, etc. But all links take you to a error page saying they are overloaded. My guess is they are either tracking that you clicked it to see if they have a valid email (for spam reason) or the webpage is somehow tracking you or trying to install a virus, etc.
Either way, make sure you double-check where the link in your next Groupon email is actually taking you before you click it. Make sure when you hover over the link your browser status bar (at the bottom of your browser) shows it as a Groupon.com link. And even after clicking it, make sure you end up on a groupon.com site, and not redirected somewhere else.
Hope this helps some of you.
