What kind of work do you do? Lifting about 50 lbs. or more and excessive stretching or bending is not advised when you have a hernia.
Most hernias don't cause a problem but it sounds as if yours is. Are you eligible for medicaid or sliding scale medical? If you are on unemployment worksource may train you for a different type of work in a field doing something that would not exacerbate issues your hernia.

Have you tried a visit to your local health department? They should be able to help you with options for your needed hernia operation. They can assit you with doctors, who will work with you on a pay scale. Now I understand you are unemployed, but Kaiser isn't going to help you, you need to look into other options, such as I mentioned.

Good luck!
