Strategic Creations Complaint - Theft of intellectual property

Review by rachelcampbell2001us4 on 2011-07-21
I was hired as a consultant for Strategic Creations and then was asked to design the website (strategiccreations.org). The work was done on time and the website launched. I submitted an invoice on March 29, 2011 and the owner of the company has refused to pay me. This amounts to theft of intellectual property. I sent the bill to a collection agency but so far nothing has happened. I invite you to go to the website and see for yourself. Everything on it was designed by me, from the narrative to the images, to the price list; I even helped the computer technician with the final layout. In addition, because the owner and I are colleagues (and I thought friends) I gave her a steep discount; normally I charge about $40 an hour. In this case I only charged $20 an hour and billed the company for 40 hours instead of 85. Evidently this was not enough of a discount; the owner does not want to pay me anything. I think consumers should think twice about doing business with such an unscrupulous individual.

Consult a lawyer. Since it may go that far, you may be able to get paid your normal rate and for how many hours you worked.

Perhaps the owner just does not have the money.

What does your contract say about payment?

Take them to small claims court.

I hope that there IS a contract. I learned a long time ago not to do any web work, or, any pc work for "friends", or even family.

BTW, the site is offline right now.
