Bob Evan's Restaurants Complaint - NO MORE COMPLIMENTARY DINNER ROLLS! - Dinner Rolls

Complaint
Review by Stephanie in WV on 2011-07-24
SOUTH CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA -- On Thursday, July 21, 2011, I visisted Bob Evans for dinner like we do 2 to 3 days per week. There was a total of 6 people in our party, which includes 2 children. Four of us ordered the 2 piece spiced rub chicken. The two children ordered off the kids menu. The waitress brought two rolls out ( 1 on each plate). We asked for a basket of rolls like we always get, but the waitress said the rules had changed. My husband and I shared our roll with the others. I questioned the waitress, she said they had changed the rules. Bob Evans wanted to save money. At the end of my dinner, she replied that she could sell me some rolls for $2.99. I told her that I was finished with my dinner and was very aggravated because I was not getting the service that I normally get. We love Bob Evans, but if they continue on being tight with their food, we wish to no longer eat there. The other children asked for rolls, but was told they weren't allowed to have any. I called and spoke to the General Manager, and he played down that they had not changed their policy, that we could have one roll at a time. The other two wasn't entitled to a roll because they ordered off a kids menu. We still had two adults that didn't get rolls. I asked the manager why the policy had changed and he said they were just trying to save on food cost, yet he said the policy hasn't changed. He didn't act too upset that we were upset. Just wanted me to point out the waitress so he may talk to her. I guess we will just go to Ryans Steakhouse where they give you unlimited rolls whether your young or old. I was very disappointed by the way the General Manager acted towards me on the phone.

you have to remember there is still a recession. alot of resturants are changing their policies about complimentary food. Ryan Steakhouse may end doing the same thing.

It's unfortunate that a lot of restaurants are having to cut back on the free things they give to customers, but you have to remember that these rolls are complimentary. You are not paying for them and they are not normally part of the meal. Sad, but true. Bob Evans is not the only place that is cutting back. :(

I love Ryan's rolls. Just wish I could have gotten the recipe when I worked there, but they guard it like the KFC recipe.

These rolls were never free. You got them when you PAID for a meal. The cost of the rolls was considered when calculating the menu prices. Eliminating the rolls from the meal offerings is done to help keep menu prices down. Kind of like the ever shrinking 'half gallon' ice cream container. Penny wise pound foolish if you ask me.

Good review!

Did you know that Bob Evans is a publicly traded company?

Think about Ford Motors doing things like changing from a 60,000/5 year warranty to a 30,000/3 year warranty to save money. And then you look elsewhere, and find out other auto companies did it also. This is the same thing.

I know it is a shock when you are a regular - I had the same thing happen with bread at Red Robin years ago, and I was very upset that first night. I later had my cherry red behind banned from that establishment on unrelated charges.

Same thing happened at our Champps Sports Bar - used to get a nice bread stick with the Cobb Salad, it kept getting smaller and smaller until it disappeared completely.

Can you buy the rolls?
Posted by Old Timer on 2011-07-25:
Skye, they told Stephanie that she could buy more for $2.99. That's a lot of money for a couple of rolls.

I have noticed at some of our favorite haunts they ask if we want bread or rolls now. They used to just bring them. That by itself probably cuts down waste. I stay away from Gluten so we often never touched the rolls. Money saved in our case.

I understand places doing away with rolls. How many times did we see tables with rolls, that nobody touched, and then they are thrown away when the tables are cleared.

The economy is hitting everyone and every place.

Good point, Skye. Personally, I'm not fond of filling up on bread before or with my meal when I go out to eat.

Yes good points but still the OP is getting less for their money by the elimination of the rolls with the meal. What next eliminate the complimentary water, forks and plates?

You know times are tough when a dinner roll is seen as a deal breaker by both ends.

I love when a restaurant provides u bread before your meal. But it is complimentary as long as they don't take away my free cheddar bay biscuits at RL or my free bread sticks at OG I'm fine.

If it is good quality bread, I will eat as much as they give me. At a fine dining establishment, bread is usually free. I can understand the mid level and chain places not providing it gratis. It kind of depends on how much you are paying overall, and how much profit is baked into the price of your meal.

Restaurants give free bread hoping you fill up on that and don't notice that the meal portions are smaller. If a restaurant is forced to cut something, I'd rather they do away with the bread than downsize the portions. When I eat out, I order something I rarely have at home. I can eat bread anytime.

But OP's group ordered FOUR adult meals. Only TWO rolls were delivered. That is just not right. The price of at least one roll apiece was included in the chicken meals.

I understand that the bread basket is a terrific way for a restaurant to cut down on costs. But at least give one roll for every adult meal! Sheesh!!

After reading olie's comment, I realized I had not read to the end of the letter.

The manager seems to be trying to play both sides of the fence. He claimed the rules *hadn't* changed, and that each adult should have gotten a roll. I think the manager didn't want to tell the OP the truth and the rules really did change. Why else would the server have said so?

He still succeeded in ticking off the OP!
