Anna Marie's Dance Studio Complaint - My Daughter's Terrible Summer at Anna Marie's Dance Studio

Review by BernardD on 2011-08-04
WILMINGTON, DELAWARE -- My daughter had a terrible experience at Anna Marie's Dance Studio summer camp. We were told it was a beginners camp for all ages. The instructor for the camp, Ashley, was extremely mean to our daughter because she was unable to properly execute some of the dance moves. My daughter was NOT misbehaving at any time during the camp. The instructor referred to her as "Elmo", told her she danced "like a baby" and like she "was in la la land", and threatened to remove her from the class - always making these comments in front of the other students. We were unaware of the issue until late in the summer when one of our daughter's friends told us what was happening (my daughter was afraid to tell us). When we discussed the issue with the owner we were met with indifference - we later learned the instructor is related to the owner. Its important to note that the instructor did NOT deny any of the accusations and was not apologetic.

How ridiculous. It seems like some people get off on picking on little kids nowadays. I'm sorry your daughter got such horrible treatment from her instructor.

Name calling of any type by anyone in a position of authority is not acceptable. Its unfortunate that she is related to the owners. In the end though you have the last laugh and word of mouth advertising can either hurt or help a business. Hopefully others will read and learn from your review.

How old is your daughter?

I concur with JIS!

Sorry for the earlier comment. My 3 year old had my phone and must have done that, along with who knows what else.

This is sad. I can understand trying to push a student to do better, but calling the child names or embarassing them in front of their peers is not the way to go. Do you know of any similar complaints about that instructor? Hopefully this won't deter your child from wanting to try a different dance class.

I was picked on in school myself, always underweight, but wore super nice clothes I got from my cousins that had money....$100 to $500 for a school dress was not unusual in my closet...but Mom didn't have to pay for them, being the oldest of six kids, and with generous cousins, I was looked on at school as a snob, I never felt I was better than anyone else, I just wanted to belong to one of the groups at school. Never happened, the kids pretty much laughed me out of school....along with a couple of teachers.
