Gold's Gym International, Inc Complaint - Terrible billing system

Complaint
Review by judylin588 on 2011-08-10
ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND -- I had a very bad experience with Gold's Gym. I joined it because of new location closed to my work place. I used direct payment, so they deduct my payment every month from my checking account. I went back to Taiwan and asked them to stop my membership, they won't allow, so I still need to pay $49.00 every month even I did not use the facilities. My bank account was changed from Chevy Chase to Capital one, so they won't be able to use old account. No one bother to call me and ask for my update information. I recevied a collection letter after 4 months, and the payment add up almost $200.00. The collector asked me if I paid $169.00 they will cancel my account, and I agreeded. But after 5 months, I still receiving debt collector's letter asking for my membership payment. What's up with this big company? My worries is their screw up system could also screw up my credit score. I have no interst to go back to this company at all.

If you agreed to a contract term, I am confused as to how it is the Gym's issue that you moved out of country. Most of these agreements have a specific length requirement and possibly a termination fee.

Most gym contracts have a clause that allows early termination if you move a certain distance away. When I had a Gold's membership, that was the only way to cancel the contract without penality.
