Safeway Informative - Self service ---WHY?

Review by bobina519 on 2011-08-31
Safeway is a great store and since they closed 2 close to me I no longer use them. I use the closest store (was Alberstsons until they closed too) to my house or the store on my way home. What I don't understand about the self service is why it is even there. 90% of the time there is a person standing behind a counter just watching and waiting for problems. Why doesn't that person just do the ring up. I don't see where self service is useful or needed. The customer service person just gets to stand there mostly doing nothing while we do their job.. Just a way to give no customer service...

I don't shop Safeway any more for that reason...

I like the self service at the Ralph's I shop at. It saves me from having to wait in the other lines behind the customers with numerous carts that are overloaded. Self service usually runs quicker too, believe it or not.

My wife has the self checkout down to a science. We're in, out, and on our way in no time at all.

Self service checkout often has 4 checkouts that people can be using. That one employee can only check out one person at a time. If even the 4 self-service lines take half of the time of a normal checkout, then it's twice as effective as a regular checkout line.

Those self-checkout lines are also mainly used for people with a small amount of items. So it will cut down on the other lines, such as the 15 items or less line, which could be used to check out full carts.

I like the self service checkouts, use them all the time. And, like Steve pointed out about, 1 cashier can "run" 4 registers.
