First Choice Power Texas Complaint - Whopping rate increase

Review by s.lodahl94 on 2011-09-21
I have been an aggressive switcher of power providers ever since Texas went to de-regulated power companies. (I don't think de-regulated is the right word. Legalizing theft is better.) I started with First Chioce Power in late August at 4.1 kwh. That's what I paid for the first 2 weeks worth of their service. I expected to be kicked up to a higher rate in Sept, but I just got my bill yesterday It went up a whopping 333% to 12.9 kwh.

When I called to complain they told me that's what I owe and that's how it works with my deal. i. e., tough rocks buddy. That the promo price could be for as little as 1 day if your timing was bad. WOW.

I have already filed a complaint with TPUC and have changed providers.

You say that you *expected* the rate to increase.

Were you aware that the rate you were initially quoted was a promotional rate when you signed up? If so, was there any indication of how long that rate would last and/or what the rate would be once the promotion was over?

Maybe I am misunderstanding, and you mean the rates were just deregulated and that is why you expected an increase.

Out of curiosity, what is the competition charging? My guess is that this would be competitive, and a provider couldn't just charge any old rate.

By the way, a "kwh" is an amount of energy, not money. The numbers you quote are the cost in cents per kwh.
