Enterprise Rent a Car in West Hollywood Complaint - Just Plain Racist - Said I lived in wrong zip code to rent their car
I initially went to the Vroom.com website to book a rental car at the lowest price. Enterprise in W. Hollywood won out so I booked a car for two days. I decided I wanted an entire week instead of two days and modified the booking through Enterprise's personal website. I rode the bus for 3 hours in the rain with my confirmation paper. They asked for my driver's license and credit card. I gave them my driver's license and bank debit card. They then asked for a utility bill and paycheck stub. My utility bill showed I lived in Carson (which is close to Compton and Long Beach). The Black guy who serviced me then said I needed to go to Carson to rent a car because I lived too far away from W. Hollywood. I told him I have rented cars all over the United States so how could that be true. I told him the Carson Enterprise charges $60 a week more to rent the same car. I also told him they could put a hold on more monies if necessary; to put a hold on $1,000 instead of $300. I explained that their confirmation page said nothing about such a zip code restriction. He didn't even want salary information any more because they didn't care how much money I made and told me there was nothing they were going to do. He lied and said the requirement was on their website but I had a two-page printout of my confirmation which stated no such requirement. He looked at it and said it doesn't matter. It appears that the manager in the back decided that since I lived in Carson (where there are many very nice homes), I needed to take my African American self back to Carson where I belonged. Even the enticement of offering them 3 times the customary hold price meant nothing to them, which is why I believe it was just plain old racism. They called the Carson branch who said they would honor the reservation but when I arrived (3 hours later), they completely rescinded that offer. They said they would not honor the previous reservation price and charged me an extra $60 a week. There is nothing on their website about discriminating against a person's point of origin, especially when they put a hold on large amounts of your money.
