Food Lion Complaint - No Annocement or warning of Computers Down Cash Only

Complaint
Review by lswann53 on 2011-10-13
LAPLATA, MARYLAND -- Went shopping @ Food Lion in LaPlata, Md. The cashier knows of me, I shopped for about 45mins. My cart was full, got up to the register and the cashier turned off her light so the nice young man @ the Express said he would take me, the cashier that turned off her light took another customer. And before I put my grocieries on the counter, the young man informed, only then was I informed that the system was down and he could only accept cash. I was so upset, all that time walking around the store and I'm disabled so I was in pain only to get to the cashier and have to leave my entire cart full of grocieries. Someone could of announced over the loud speaker but no one did. I was very dissappointed. Loss of gas, driving 25 mins. to shop just to go home (25 more mins.) without grocieries. No manager came out to apologize and the cashier that closed her register as I was walking towards her was still taking customers. How rude that was of her. This was between 7:30am.-8:30am on Thursday Oct. 13th. Some one should have told the customers ahead of time. I did not have cash, as I was going to use my Independance Card. And the reason I went to LaPlata instead of the Indian Head Md. store is because that store is almost always out of items that I need or the stock is very poor. Thank You

This seems like it was handled very poorly. When I was a cashier at Giant, only once did our system go down and we had to get out the knuckle busters. However, this only works if your card works like a credit card. We could not do debit or checks. You're right, there should have been an announcement made and compensation made available.

I'm sorry you went through this. Thanks for the warning.

The manager handeled it wrong. There should have been signs posted on the entrance doors that the system was down and they were only accepting cash. I have seen stores do that before. That way you can leave and get cash or leave and go to another store. But to be told at the register is absurd.

Definitely voice your concern to the manager so that the issue can be corrected.

This happened to me once, but it was announced as I was shopping. I quickly ran to the checkout, and luckily my transaction went through. Ever since then, I carry a blank check in my wallet just in case it ever happens again.

I know how you feel about having to leave the groceries behind. My supermarket is only five minutes away, and I am not disabled, but I was still completely frustrated at the thought of having to abandon my cart and go home empty handed.
