Secure Horizons Complaint - Please Beware

Review by dg-pg17 on 2011-10-21
CORONA, CALIFORNIA -- Any Secure Horizons members and those that aren't.....PLEASE BE AWARE:

For those that know or those that don't know, my mother in law had a stroke. She was transferred to a physical therapy unit nearby that is quite good. They have been working with her for LESS than a week. They have done a good job so far but she still is unable to dress, bath, or take care of her personal matters.

Get this.....Secure Horizons is cutting her loose because she was able walk with a walker 100' unassisted. THAT is their criteria for cutting her loose ready or not. The therapist says she is not ready but Secure Horizons is declining to pay for anymore therapy.

Our only recourse is to appeal their decision. Gee I wonder who that appeal goes to. We get an answer to our appeal in 48 hours. Any guesses as to how that will turn out. Secure Horizons SUCK!!!!!!!!!!

Check in your area for an Elder advocacy agency. They might be able to offer your mother free legal assitance in this matter.

Youi didn't state if this was AARP Medicare Complete under Secure Horizons. If it was, United Health Care has been underwriting AARP for some time and just recently dropped the Secure Horizons from the name and logo. They have a Complaint Resolution procedure. Did you go through that? They have to meet Medicare standards per their contract with the Medicare administrators, and a board of providers and other experts decide the amount of payment they make. You can appeal any decision by that board, and they do occasionally reverse themselves. Good luck.

By all means, file an appeal. And just FYI, physical therapy mostly deals with mobility. It's occupational therapy that would handle the other things you mentioned. Was she receiving both at this facility?
