Air New Zealand Complaint - Air NZ Charges 25% MORE (as taxes) if paying for online fares with airpoints - Air Transportation

Air Transportation - Complaint
Review by geoff.hutt33 on 2011-10-26
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- Recently I went online to find a round-trip airfare from LAX to AKL with Air NZ. I couldn't find a way to pay for the fare online (using my Air NZ air points)so I called Air NZ customer service and they were happy to process it for me (at an extra cost of 25% MORE (as taxes))!

Unbelievable, if you are living outside of NZ (like me), you CANNOT pay for online fares with airpoints. You have to go through the Air NZ service center and when I did that, they jacked up the total fare by around $300 USD. When I looked more closely, it was all in the taxes line! So...Be careful!

That sounds like furl surcharges.

you have to look at the tax breakdown. XT could be further broken down but NZ can't.
Without you listing the tax codes I can only offer the following:
You may have been subject to a fuel surcharge - not unheard of on redemption tickets.
Since NZ is a member of the *A you could book through say NH and possibly avoid a surcharge.
The more you learn about Alliances and how they can work for you the more you realize only fools travel on non Alliance carriers such as Southwest or Jetblue. For future bookings search for tips on *A bookings.

There is a lot of that going around. We flew on Lingus from Dublin to London. The ticket was 9Euros, that was just for starters. After taxes, etc, etc.... It was really about $70Euros, same as everyone else.

You might come in with a bare bones fare, points or whatever, but it will always cost you something for that deal.
